35 Construction Solutions That Don’t Solve Problems, Only Create Them, As Shared By This Instagram Account (New Pics)
We are surrounded by design every day in everything we see or do. Whether it’s aesthetically arranged furniture, visually pleasing bathroom tiles, or beautiful yet funky rugs, we instinctively know when designs look good. And we also immediately notice when these ideas look bad, questionable, or plain ugly. We always notice.
You see, while some projects might have looked great on paper, they sometimes get executed in the worst possible way. It might be a result of awful handiwork, lack of communication, or certain shortcuts craftsmen believed they have to make. Whatever the reason, such problematic looks leave the end-users with an overwhelming urge to share their confusion with the world.
Enter the Instagram account called Typical Rykozhop, a place where appalling design and construction decisions made by the hands of less-skilled professionals find their home. Bored Panda has collected some of the most shoddy building and repairing "solutions" from the account, so keep on scrolling and judge for yourself! And if you’re in the mood for some more construction madness, take a look at our previous compilations right here and here.

is that to make that room more spacious or to try to contain the evil spirit of the always angry washing machine?
What if it breaks? How do you fix/remove that thing? Jackhammer? If the Maytag guy saw this he'd just quit.
I wondered if they could go in from the other side of the wall, as long as it's not a outside wall.
Load More Replies...Final maintenance done. No more maintenance required.use and keep kind of arrangement.
Exactly. It will last maybe ten years given how things work now (companies make things to break so we have to buy more).
Load More Replies...Yeah, looks funny but actually, it looks like that panel can be removed for maintenance, so it gives you more room in the bathroom.
Yeah, that space looks like a real spider magnet. *shudder*

What if we open both at the same time?
Load More Replies...How much effort would it take to remove that first handle?! Is that a metal door? Would it have been too much work to fill the void after removing the first handle?! Did they put them adjacent to each other so the 2nd handle could use the same door jamb strike plate?! Can't wrap my head around these bizarro world decisions 😆
The front door of my 100-year-old house is a bit like this. I get the feeling the previous owner didn't know how to repair a doorknob, but did know how to install one. The result: two doorknobs. We always laugh when houseguests get confused when they try to leave.
Nearly everyone has that little voice at the back of our heads that tells us when we see something that just doesn’t look right. It's almost like an instinct — if you can’t use something effectively, there is probably something wrong with its design or execution. The Typical Rykozhop account is here to prove that not everyone is born with magic hands when it comes to building or fixing up things.
People spend years studying and practicing to become specialists in their field, from architects and designers to contractors and regular workers. So as you’re scrolling through this compilation of pictures, you’ll notice that some professionals are less skilled than others. Heck, we have spirit levels and measuring squares for a reason, so they seem to have a talent to fail this badly.
But no matter how hard designers and builders may try, no matter how much planning they put into the project, some things are bound to go wrong. According to the Digital Builder construction blog, there are several common causes why professionals make mistakes in construction and why they are so hard to solve.
... this way, you'll keep buying more glass panes. the glass company sure is money-smart
Ya, I see it now. The pipe's cracked. Can't have that. We should get some flex seal tape and fix it.
Load More Replies...This has to be intentional; even before I saw the broken glass pic, I thought, "Well there's a nice way to kick the argument up ten notches with just one door slammed open."
I'm thinking the same thing. The first photo shows the glass door intact, so the person who took the photo saw an issue, but couldn't put a doorstop in place?
Load More Replies...Interesting that they couldn't realise even during fitting the glass door or trying to open and close before fitting it up. Genius.
This has an air of malicious compliance about it. "Just install the piping and don't TOUCH ANYTHING!!!" "Okay fine."
Could the bricks have been put there as a marker for something more permanent? If they were then I can see the issue here
My immediate thought as well, surely something else will go in that spot
Load More Replies...Pretty sure that these bricks serves as placeholder for something...
I iamgine there's something else going on and the bricks are there specifically because those pipes needed to be put this way.
Load More Replies...As a contractor, I can appreciate this. We don't touch or move anything that doesn't belong to us for liability reasons. Customer was told to move anything in the way of the work to be done. I love this.
Your job is also to ask questions to confirm all throughout the pre-build and build process.
Load More Replies...On top of everything else wtf did they use to fasten the pipes down? Those pinches don't look code to me but hey, what do I know.
As a former installer of server boxes, this makes me want to reach in, grab a handful, and start French braiding until everyone screams.
Sounds good to me. You start on the right, I'll start on the left.
Load More Replies...There's someone somewhere that is responsible for maintaining this. And they have it all figured out.
The first one may seem simple but is often overlooked — basic human error. Building or repairing involves a fair share of repetitive tasks, and as one study has revealed, humans aren’t always good at that. Researchers discovered that as people perform monotonous tasks, their brain involuntarily shifts into rest mode whether they like it or not. This could lead them to seriously mess up even the simplest tasks.
During the study, scientists asked participants to repeatedly perform a "flanker task" — an experiment where people had to quickly respond to visual clues. "To our surprise, up to 30 seconds before the mistake, we could detect a distinct shift in activity," Dr. Stefan Debener, of Southampton University, UK, told BBC. "The brain begins to economize, by investing less effort to complete the same task."
However, this is not a sign of the brain going to sleep. "Autopilot would be a better metaphor," Debener added. "We can assume that the tendency to economize task performance leads to an inappropriate reduction of effort, thus causing errors."
Did they build the house around the utility pole? I'm not even sure what I'm looking at. How...?
It’s the “hen or egg” question all over again. No one knows the answer, but it will drive people mad.
Load More Replies...The house was built first, and the pole was built while the house was in mid-build. Both teams followed instructions to the letter. When it was finished it wasn't great, but the roof stopped with the sill of the window and very close to the pole. At some point, the roof was upgraded and extended out, which resulted in what you see now
What was the designing process. Oh yes that pole will look lovely in my home.
And i thought the pole just outside my house seemed unsafe. (It was like 5 feet to the side and it was leaning over quite a bit and wobbling in the wind scarily. I told landlord and she dismissed me cause it has been like that for years now. Seemed worse to me tho. Like 2 weeks later the neighbors had some tree trimmer vehicle thing come through to clear the road (we live in the woods and just have to keep the road clear enough of branches and underbrush and stuff). And the thing on top i guess was a little too tall or raised up or something. And it pulled the whole damn thing down. Thankfully pulled toward the road/away from the house/way it actually leaned. My landlord was not happy by having multiple third party witnesses holding her to account for fixing the damages. Which she couldn't really fight cause I sent her a pic and concerned message less than a month before the negligence caused public safety concerns that the city had to fix immediately.
Alignment doesn't matter considering that even if it did line up, the shut off valves were installed so close to the wall they can't be opened.

Another reason why construction blunders happen is miscommunication. Digital Builder explained that with many stakeholders and moving parts on every project, it isn’t easy to share the messages needed between contractors. "One of the factors contributing to miscommunication is what psychologists call signal amplification bias: as humans, we regularly fail to realize how little we’re actually communicating with others."
Assuming your thoughts and actions are crystal clear to your colleagues or collaborators often leads to mistakes and can cause tremendous issues. And it seems that this is an industry-wide problem because poor project data and miscommunication are responsible for 48% of all rework in the US.

But even when you have great communication skills, your project might still fail if you choose the wrong person for the job. So if you want to avoid hiring bad contractors, experts have a few pieces of advice to share to dodge any future slip-ups. First, consumers often get too excited to see a low bid and quickly jump at the opportunity to save a bit of money.
"Contractors know that homeowners will be fixed on costs and the bottom line, and unethical contractors will leave out some scope of work details just to obtain the job," Jody Costello, home renovation planning and contractor fraud expert at Contractors From Hell, told Architectural Digest. "You need to review bids against your scope of work to ensure it includes everything you expect."
He reached out and turned on the switch, "What does this switch operate?" and then turns it off before repeating. Meanwhile, 2000 miles away, 2 men and a security guard are staring at a flashing light, "I have to stand guard of the mystical light. No one knows why it suddenly comes on during the day and flashes"
AND that's why building codes & responsible inspectors that don't take bribes are GOOD!

Then, be on the lookout for vague contracts. "Be wary of a contract that is devoid of details — or the language is vague at best — regarding the scope of work for the project, responsibilities, payment schedules, and start and stop times," she said and added that the scope of work and every single detail must be included in your written agreements. "This includes materials used, supplies, equipment, vendors, subcontractors — everything that goes into your project."

Looks like a movie bomb. I hope the hero figures out which wire to cut.
Load More Replies...that is revolting. the electrician didn't conduct himself well, should be zero charge for that work.
I have seen this with handymen who claim they can install anything. At least use some wire nuts.
I don't do electricity but am I correct that there may be some times where the copper will stop connecting properly and the connection will fail? At least temporarily?
The first picture probably doesn't even work half the time. Wires with electricity running through them generate electro-magnetic fields, some of them high enough to cause coronal discharge. CD occurs when the field becomes great enough through loss of that power exiting through the air, that the air around the wire will begin to ionize. An arcing wire is essentially doing the same thing, as it's electrical energy that's desperately trying to connect with something else to form a path. Because the wires have a significant gap between them, some of that electrical energy is lost to the surrounding air - the air between the wires, since it's the closest space to pass through to reach the other wire. Arcing will inevitably end up occurring, from the excess energy passing through the air. Arcing is bad, because an electrical arc intrinsically generates heat - as a waste byproduct, all electricity loses some of its energy through heat - and heat means the chances of fire. Arcs get very hot.

Plus, when the contractor asks for cash payments, this is a sign they might be trying to avoid paying taxes, which only shows you’re dealing with a dishonest person. Moreover, "It’s important to have proof of payment using a canceled check, receipts, and lien releases upon payments made to the contractor in the event he or she claims they weren’t paid," Costello noted.

After looking at all the other craziness, this is rather normal...
That was the first generation flush button. As you can see, as evidenced by the second generation model directly below, technology has allowed significant miniaturization of the component pieces which has provided for a much less intrusive and more aesthetically pleasing user interface to be presented for normal operation. It is most probable that the first generation model was left in place as it may have been of the type that served as a structural component in the wall.
However, looking at these pictures can make anyone suspicious of whether the workers were doing their jobs clear-headed. Real estate broker Egypt Sherrod advised that "when it comes to deciding on who you want to work on your home renovation project, a major, waving red flag that says, Don’t hire me, is a contractor who shows up to the job site, and you suspect they are under the influence."

Thats "a macgyver solution" Because from what i see both pipes are also different type one is a drain pipe another is kind of washing machine pipe , so maybe thats why the did that
Grey soil pipe, white flexible connector. Mate what kind of washing machine you have that would need such a large pipe. Oh wait you on about a vent hose for dryer, then yes its sinilar but it still isnt this pipe. I like the fact that your pipe skills overshadowed the fact that the flow direction has to go up. so even though the s**t in that toilet will not raise properly i shall upvote yours.
Load More Replies...Let's hope the toilet is at least elevated above the pipe, or that s**t's going nowhere!
* throws up a little* that's a sewage line handled by a flexible water pipe ... And connected very badly.
Guess no one can have that lavish meal and use this afterwards, the explosion is immanent
In old Soviet apartment buildings, the bathrooms are quite small, so the tub would double as a sink, therefore the long tap (you can reach it to wash your face/teeth without stepping into the tub).
Load More Replies...The metal flexipipe is for the shower head, and the bath is not full fitted yet. They will put up the tiles, then add waterproof coving and the sealant. The square holes will be covered up when the bathe tub has finished being installed
Ok but y do we need a faucet so long that it could b inside u if u slip the wrong way
Thanks. Can you believe I did it with only 1 good eye? he said with a wink
At a loss for words... note the silver tape at the connection to the radiator.
It's important to read the temperature rating people! Especially when working with something that can burn you during normal operation.
I really had no idea that radiators were still used as much as they are seen here.
How else do you heat rooms? I had no idea there were so many ways to badly install radiators as shown here.
Load More Replies...They are overflow pipes going into a drainage pipe. They are mostly used on condensation traps on extractor fans, condensing boilers or old fashioned toilet cisterns without an internal overflow. Not sure why there are so many in one spot.
Load More Replies...While this is clearly a sewer system connection that's small diameter PVC piping--not something that can carry even the flow from a sink. Whatever they go to doesn't produce much water. Furthermore, note the food--some of the packages are not in English and the prices are pretty clearly not in US$. Thus I'm going guess we are looking at a building in south Asia somewhere that was retrofit with AC--but it's a bunch of mini-split systems rather than central air. The building is big enough that the outside parts are mounted on the roof (I have seen dozens on top of a single building before) and the climate is wet enough there's going to be a decent amount of condensate that would be an issue if just dumped over the side. Hence it's going down the drain.
Those look like condensate lines for a mini split wall unit.. (aka, drain)
I don't know, but I'm sure they aren't supposed to be near the food. Hope it isn't anything toilet related.
Have some issues with my thermostat heads, too. Manufacturer of my valves went out of business some 30 years ago. No more spare parts and far from being compatible to any standard. So either stick to a similar solution or change all valves.
it's a low-rent thermostat dial; we have these in my apartment. it just regulates how much heat is pumped into the house, no real thermostat attached to it to keep the house at a steady temperature.
Load More Replies...This is to reduce the water pressure, going from 22 mm pipe to 15 mm pipe. If the water is going from the 15 mm to the 25 mm then it would be to stop back flow by increasing the pressure to the 22 mm pipe
Changing the size/diameter of pipes does not change the water pressure. It changes the volume of the flow (how many liters/gallons per minute).
Load More Replies...Okay why are those pipes pink? Bc it REALLY makes this pic look like alien snakes who puke their penises up before f*****g the ground.
Looks like geothermal transitions. The only real issue I see is that there are no shutoff valves to isolate if a repair is needed. Could be wrong though.
Those are typical stub ups, the plumber probably just ran out of 90 degree elbows. The rigid lines are inverted to meet the flexible ones, otherwise the flex line would kink. Shoddy work in general, but no complex pipe size changing reason. #TheEngineerHasSpoken
Those extra inches that were gained by putting it into wall could have been gained by using a rounder toilet rather than an elongated one.
What's the problem? This looks like a public space, and the fence is probably there to prevent children from kicking the windows or something.
The issue isn't the fence, it's the tiles not being centered because they were too lazy to measure it out and cut it.
Are those windows shattered from a hot radiator next to cold glass? And instead of fixing them, fenced it off? Surely not...
That's a radiator in front of a window, which seems to be fogging the window. That room can't possibly be warm.
If you're going to ruin a beautiful plastered ceiling, you might as well go all the way.
My thoughts exactly. That's just heartbreaking.
Load More Replies...I have seen this before. The drain sits on the floor and not embedded in it. Common when upgrading British bungalows from the 50s and 60s. To fix it properly is quite expensive as the concrete floor will need channeling and the connector into the external sewage pipe lowered. This often needs the area around the sewage pipe to be excavated.
Load More Replies...This is done as the waste pipe and fittings can sometimes be bigger than the space below the floor leading to the mains sewage. Also, the floor could be uneven, as this one looks like it is. It's very common for both to happen
You want bay window? That will be extra 50 ruble. You want balcony 150 ruble.
I hope like hell that this ribbed pipe isn’t coming from a toilet, but the picture suggests it is. Yuck, yuck, yuck.
Yikes! Yeah that looks like a portable air conditioner hose being used for a toilet drain. That would fill up those baffles so quick and it would stink to high heaven all the time. Lol, not a good choice there if that is a toilet.
Load More Replies...Love silver tape. It can do practically anything... not exactly sure what it's doing here, but I'm sure it's indispensable.
I've seen a lot of this. Buyers apparently don't look behind the toilet.
yeah, that single tan tile is really triggering... what were they thinking!
Maybe...the tan tile is mysteriously the only clean one...
Load More Replies...Actually, they work very well for hot water. Much less likely to have any bursts, hot or cold, from PEX piping. Technically, this hook up will work even if it doesn't look pretty.
Load More Replies...This room won't get warm because the hot water will bypass the radiator.
The valve in between the two connections would be always closed when running the rad so it wouldn't bypass it. When you want to shut the rad off, you close off the two valves at the rad and open that middle valve to bypass the rad in the summer.
Load More Replies...So... the PVC hose is carrying HOT water to your radiator? How much has it stretched already?
That's PEX piping and it works great for hot water. It's extremely durable. I re-piped my camper trailer with PEX just for this reason. It survives both hot and cold (freezing) much better than copper does.
Load More Replies...Looks like someone spilled brownie batter and it's slowly running down the wall.
I hope not. As messed up as this sounds I really hope many of these "repairs" are done by clueless homeowners and not professionals. I hope nobody actually paid people to do them.

I think its not done yet. Ussually they put thing called tile grout to cover that section

Load More Replies...When you're playing hide-and-seek with the valve on a pipe that's been encased in concrete for over a decade...
What's wrong here? Manifolds for hot and cold water for multiple apartments. They're probably going to encase the whole thing in concrete and it won't have to be messed with for 50 years.
Agreed. They could've done a better job calculating their 45deg offsets but for what it's doing, there's nothing really wrong with this.
Load More Replies...I think this is PEX. It work better than copper for hot and cold applications. This is what you will find in RVs. Also a lot less work than calculating for elbows and no need for soldering/sweating.
Load More Replies...No one would have known if they had cut away the excess isolation foam.
I've seen far worse. This actually looks pretty good compared to some of the s**t I've seen.
Looks like a ball socket fitting? If not, I have absolutely no idea how that is not leaking.
What the hell? Looks like chlorine testers we have in water stations.
I think it might be a water softening unit. First thought was ro but there's no holding chambers.
Load More Replies...Looks worse than it is, none of them are actually intertwined. Definitely should have used shorter lines to clean it up though.
Ok,what's wrong with this? It's a shut off valve, it looks to turn away from the wall...I'd it the crappy weld/solder job?
I think it might be the fact they used a threaded valve and then welded in place making replacement impossible. Lol. They probably should've stuck a union in there instead of the 2 welds. I'm guessing that's what they are pointing out here.
Load More Replies...I suspect they meant to undercut the door, took the door off and cut the wrong end...
Two valves for LP gas shut off? nothing wrong with a bit of redundancy.
If my eyes are seeing this right, it's probably the PEX elbow and stub on a gas line which is being called out here. I don't think that would pass inspection. Lol. But as for valves, sure, have as many as you like. Better too many than not enough.

Well, at least they have the top valve closed. Might wanna stick a plug in there until they hook something else up to it or whatever the hell they are planning on doing with it.
