While European churches may be world-famous for their historical value and architecture, the ones in America are known for their notoriously clever and hilariously funny church signs.
Much like a store might write up a cheeky message on their sidewalk A-frame to entice people walking by to come inside, churches use humorous church welcome signs to try and draw potential faithful in to fill their pews - or, now and then, just to put a smile on someone's face who might need it. The trendier the creative church sayings, the more likely they are to appeal to young audiences.
Speaking of trends, one of the latest ones happens to be posting pictures of sinfully funny church signs. Though we don't necessarily agree with everything they say, we give them major points for creativity. Check out the best of the ridiculously funny church signs, and see which ones deserve the most 'praise.'

What is a Good Saying to Put on a Church Sign?
The church signs that you see in front of every church are also known as pylon signs or lightbox signs. Their primary purpose is to inform the congregation or possible new church-goers of the activities that are offered by the church or to invite people to join it.
Since nowadays you have to stand out from the crowd to be noticed even if you’re a church, those lightbox signs, or rather the church signs sayings have become more entertaining and engaging than ever.
That said, there still are some unspoken rules to church welcome signs, and if you ever wondered what a good church sign should say, here are a couple of ideas:
Inspirational Quote. A good motivating and inspiring quote is always a good saying to put on a church sign!
A Lighthearted Joke. Sharing a smile or a laugh is always a pleasant experience, and it reveals the friendly demeanor of a church.
A Tasteful Pun. Oh yes, even churches aren’t immune to the power wielded by cool puns! A well-chosen one-liners church signs can be a powerful tool to invite people in.
A Bible Quote. A meaningful quote from the Bible reflecting on current events is a sure path to the congregation's hearts.
A Creative Church Sign. Mix all of the above or use none of the above and come up with something unexpected and eye-catching!
Of course, chances are slim that you’ll use these pointers to actually create funny church signs, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be curious about it. And, if you see a church that has a sign reflecting on these pointers, you’ll know they have a good sense of humor and a welcoming touch.
Tables Not Fences
I was at a women's christian conference a few months ago, and the theme of the first talk was 'Towers or Tables' and it was really inspiring. It follows the same concept about how if you confine yourself away from others, you can only build up, and that to make your tower bigger you have to build a whole new floor, but to make a table bigger you add a chair. I loved it.

What Should a Church Sign Say?
Looking at these ridiculously funny church signs, you might be starting to wonder whether it’s really what a lightbox in front of such an institution should be saying. While these creative signs are undoubtedly funny, ideally, they should be informational and send the overall message the church wants to communicate. So, a good church sign might consist of this information:
- Service Information. A sign disclosing the times of services.
- Inspirational messages. An inspirational quote to strengthen your faith.
- Upcoming Events. Every church holds public events, and a pylon sign is the perfect place to communicate about them.
- Community Outreach. A creative church sign inviting people to volunteer for good causes.
- Seasonal Messages. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter!
- Encouragement. An encouraging message might just make someone’s day a bit better.
That said, these pointers aren’t rules governed by law; not at all! And every church has a right to choose the sayings they put on their lightboxes - be it a scripture quote, a warm welcome message, or funny church signs to give you a smile! There was one in my town that said 'If you think life's a party, wait till you die!'
Really wish I snapped a photo of one that I saw that said 'Kneeling gives you good standing.'
Wish I'd gotten a picture of the sign I saw that had the quote "Behold, I come quickly." Yes, I am 8
Near my home, one says "Life is cray cray, Jesus is the way way", and used to say "Jesus is my Prozac". There are some pretty funny ones!
These are hilarious! Just goes to show the creativity of Churches and are really adaptive of the times! I grew up attending services in a lovely church that was actually one of the best churches near me that I was aware of. Now that we've relocated, I sought for a church with similar principles and foundations and discovered https://lhhouston.church/! May God continue to bless this church, and I hope to return sometime soon!
just a cartoon in the New Yorker, but relevant: Devil leading a guy past the fiery pit says "This is too good for you. We are sending you to telemarketing."
Jesus being an undocumented immigrant isn't so. Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem to register for the first census ever.
Jesus wasn't an undocumented immigrant. Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem to register for the first census, ever
A few of them seem to hint how "unchristian" and "gay-hating" it is to oppose gay marriage. But they're not telling us how out of hand nowadays is the Gaystapo. GayScoutOath.jpg
I used to be the sign guy at my church. The sign was to be " THIS SUNDAY " on the top line. The sermon title on the middle line and the preacher's name underneath. One monday I stopped by to change the sign. I stood back to proofread it. Middle line "GOD'S HOLY PROPHET" Bottom line "JOHN DOW". or "This Sunday God's holy prophet, John Dow." I asked Brother Dow if he could check the sign with me, We changed the bottom line to "BY JOHN DOW". (Name changed to protect the innocent, or guilty, Whatever)

Creative confrontative and funny. These break a common taboo. Plenty of example of this sort of rule-breaking. Then, do it and they stomp you.
I love the European church architecture, but I miss the oneliners that make you think or just laugh. Number 7 is my personal favorite.
