If you enjoy terrible pictures shared by real estate agents or social media pages like 'Ugly Belgian Houses', you're going to love this Twitter account too.
It's called 'Cheapo Architecture' and it has all the home ideas you love to hate. Like a very sad front lawn. Or a living room that looks like a corporate office reception room.
(Sure, taste is subjective and you might actually stumble upon something you actually like, but take this account's content as a whole and I think you'll agree with its main message).
So continue scrolling and who knows, maybe these interior and exterior, let's call them, solutions will actually make you feel better about your own place.

Why are these big @ss houses always decorated by some blind 80s maffia boss?
Because they're the ones with $$ I guess
Load More Replies...Just because you're rich doesn't mean you have taste. The interior looks like it was decorated by some mob boss.
Yes, but why? Why would you want to do that? It looks like a freaking pair of chopsticks!
Someone did the math on that overhang. Once an engineer was brought onto the project waaay to late, the achitect was finaly told that his ambition of a floating roof would fall, after half of the roof was build. After a major panic attack, those columns was all that could be sourced in the right dimentions. Classic symptom of a quickfix, it ain't pretty, but at least it works.
Load More Replies...The house looks, over all, like it was assembled out of leftover parts from a variety of different developments.
They built it one piece at a time, and it didn't cost them a dime (with apologies to Johnny Cash)
Load More Replies...Why would you not put one column on each front corner? Plus the two aren't even centered.
My first thought exactly. Also, that would provide much better support.
Load More Replies..."I need something to make my house look more like castle," "Just use columns, it always work"
To figure out how to choose the right person for decorating your home so it wouldn't end on 'Cheapo Architecture', we contacted interior architect and lecturer of interior design at Vilnius College of Design, Judita Striukienė.
"Architects and interior designers keep up with industry trends by reading special periodicals, following their colleagues' works, taking part in various competitions as well as attending seminars and exhibitions (new technologies often spill into creative fields, so the arts can be a good ground for discoveries). Also, manufacturers often organize product introduction events that also touch on the newest tendencies," she told Bored Panda.
I've seen urban exploration videos of this place. Definitely weird. Not sure who was supposed to be their target buyer
Not an accountant, but I like it as well. I find the shape soothing (until I get to the janky fence, at least).
Load More Replies...I disagree, an accountant would have had the windows the same size and aligned.... what's up with that upstairs window, 3rd from the left!
Now I'm also annoyed about the lack of a little window above the door to match rest of the bottom row of windows.
Load More Replies...looks like my first ever 'fancy' minecraft house when I was 7.
I used motherlode to buy my Sim the most expensive house and he hated it and was depressed looking at the rooms, he'd love this box
Load More Replies...I don't have a clue, but it makes me think of Dante's inferno
Load More Replies...Do we want to go halvies, with some contingencies as far as inclusions in the purchase agreement. Otherwise, perhaps it is run like a hotel, with beautifully designed sheets of cardboard art on your pillow instead of a mint...
Load More Replies..."When choosing an architect or interior designer, people should first consider their experience and professionalism," Striukienė said. "They should also have a similar set of values and aesthetics to you—something that can be seen in their portfolios."
"And, of course, a very important aspect of these relationships is psychological character compatibility. Without it, working together can become really challenging."
I think that some people are just trash. I don't think that it's the money's fault.
Load More Replies...How TF much does it cost to heat or air condition, I wonder. After that, how TF long would it take to clean the whole place? I mean, if you live there, you’re going to have furniture, if you can afford it after paying the hearing bill in January. (See, THIS is where the mind of someone from the 99% goes when we see OTT wasteful s**t like this place.)
Exactly. You want cheap, clean beds inside a room of your own so you can crash.
Load More Replies...Wouldn't the pic above this one (Heathrow Airport Hotel) be more of an example of Gaol Architecture?
Load More Replies...I don't mind it except why block the windows with the silo?
Thank you. That explains why my eyes & brain hurt.
Load More Replies...Steinway Tower. Built on the site of the former auditorium of the Steinway piano maker company, partially incorporated in the new building. A 100 square meters studio starts at 7,75 millions, while the average apartments are 350 m^2 at 25 millions and up. The building had a lot of problems in the construction (lawsuits, lack of permits, incidents etc) and had several safety issues after delivery with ice, tiles and glass panes detaching and falling on the street.
They'd have been better off renovating the original company building. Better for the environment, too. And I'm shocked - shocked! - that a developer who builds such a "look at me" building would have problems with permits, neighbors, materials, etc.
Load More Replies...That's why they call them "finger buildings." Because they're giving the finger to everyone with good taste.
I love the way it blends into its surroundings, almost like a Frank Lloyd Wright house! /s
All of this should then translate into a well-wishing and respectful cooperation, where everything goes smoothly. "To me, it's very important that the client allows creativity," Striukienė said.
"You often have to educate them on essential architectural and interior design factors, help them navigate their own wants and preferences, understand. These things cost energy. However, if we've established a good relationship and there's room for creative exploration, the effort is worth it."
"What you want the least is to also work as a psychologist."
Every time I see new homes being built these days, I am left gobsmacked at just how little space people are okay with between their home and others. Myself? I don't think there is any possible luxury or accoutrement that a builder might offer to make me live so close to strangers. Residents should just get an apartment if privacy isn't a concern.
See the house on the left & at the back: this house is on a steep slope. The front entrance is clearly on the other side, where the street level is close to the level of the top floor. The car garage is at the back, where the street level is much lower. The door is just a backdoor leading to a mezzanine, and usually there is an internal staircase leading to an internal mezzanine and then to the top floor. It's not an unusual layout for houses built on hillsides.
But why the 20 foot ceiling in the windowless garage?
Load More Replies...It's probably about how prominent and huge the garage is. The living space with windows and door seems like an afterthought.
Load More Replies...I kinda like these! Life is stressful. You might as well find ways to enjoy it, or else embrace the void.
And they added the statues to the “balcony” … please tell me they have a piddling cherub too.
Poor house. The architect was the one drunk and high, the house is the one hungover with the munchies. Like Corsican twins, only one’s made of concrete or wood or whatever the f**k this monstrosity is made of.
Ooh I wonder what'll happen to that overhang balcony when it starts raining buckets >:)
Class today: how to incorporate everyday objects into architecture. Student: I will go with toilet brush. I will add two for effect
When you're settling in, oftentimes the final version of your home looks different from the initial vision. Which, according to the interior architect, isn't necessarily bad.
"That can happen due to many reasons. For example, as I already mentioned, since the client deepens their understanding of architecture and interior design, they might decide to take the project to a new direction themselves."
It's a novelty shop and restaurant in Lahijan, in the iranian Gilan Province, called Pizza Tower. Coordinates are 37.19984016362511, 50.01520654044357. The road is not mapped on google, but trust me, it's there. The photo is cropped, in the full photo the name of the restaurant is visible
I knew they wanted to make sure that tower in Pisa would be safe from falling over, but I think they overdid it...
It looks like a time travel accident where buildings from different centuries merged.
what is the purpose of those lawns anyway? do kids play there or are they just meant for aesthetical reasons? seems like such a waste of space
Lawns started to show off your wealth.
Load More Replies...That is not representative of the majority of suburban America. Just considering that half your pics are are condo/apts shows that.
Exactly!! Very inaccurate representation. Most towns have a combination of several types of dwellings. LOTS of people have their own veggie gardens, flower gardens, several varieties of trees... people have beehives, raise a few chickens where allowed, some people have acres of lawn, some have smaller yards fully replaced with native plants. Remember that the US is huge and diverse and we vary SOO much not just from state to state, but also within our states, and even within our cities and towns.
Load More Replies...It's better than having rocks or gravel. I live in a neighborhood where majority has green lawn and then there are houses where they just put rocks or gravel for landscaping. I'll take green anyway!
Any pathetic attempt at lowering CO2 is still an attempt, especially given what little areas they have to work with.
All but one of these are actually multi-family units. Which is definitely a thing in England, and they all have dumb, tiny "gardens" too. Except I've seen enough pressure washing videos on YouTube to know they just lay weird red and yellow pavers over them anyways and give up on having anything green in the "garden"
It's like they desined it to be a story taller, and then got told that it was only allowed to be the same height as the original.
They could have at least made the Mansard roof the same pitch as the original! Or used a brick exterior, or kept the same high aspect-ratio windows...
Load More Replies...Looks like SOMEONE forgot their measuring tape! And they’re colorblind to boot!
It's possible that building regulations changed after the initial building was constructed and prior to the addition. But the least they could have done is matched the bricks.
Build in 1969 and was sold earlier this year. Original askin price was only 68 000 euros. This house made it's way all up to newspaper https://www.iltalehti.fi/asumisartikkelit/a/cea3e2d0-b5e4-4baf-8698-c8082de22bf9
It's legitimately incredible when you see the rest of it as well. Wish I lived in Finland to get this house for only 68000 euros. Thanks for the link 🙂
Load More Replies...I believe this is the house that’s a modest ranch style on top, but an entire lavish bunker underneath, in case they actually launched the rockets from Cuba in ‘62. The views in the windows are fakes.
Another common reason for a change in plans, according to Striukienė, comes from decor materials. When you have a limited budget, you might need to swap what you want with what you can actually get and that, naturally, has an impact on the end result too.

Load More Replies...Many of those windows beside a bathtub have a switch on the wall that activates something in the glass to make it opaque.
Well, with the material shortage still ongoing... ya gotta use what you can get.
A house I used to live in was built during WWII. There's some really interesting design choices and materials. Made repairs hard since a lot of it was fabricated from whatever they could find in whatever size they could make it
Load More Replies...Builder: And what finishing materials would you like on the exterior? Owner: All of them.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately this happens often in areas where there are requirements on percentages of materials going on the outside of new homes.
Yep. My Dad & Grandpa used to buy everything when local mom & pop hardware stores went out of business. My Grandma got a jam-jarring cellar out of that. And my brother & I got a tire swing on the walnut tree. My uncle got his first woodshop. He now makes grandfather clocks... for fun. Alhambra, CA. Good times. LOL
Toronto has a lot of realllly dated, ugly buildings.
Load More Replies...You can live just a few floors up from your work! Spares traffic and if you bike to the store it saves ALOT on fossil fuels!
A good layer of paint in a few lovely colors and it could be a wonderful building. Forest theme on one side, ocean on a 2nd side, fields and meadows on a 3rd, and mountains on the 4th. And on each balcony you can paint animals that live in the environment the side is themed as.
Actively seeking a tyrannosaurus rib and a large cat.
Load More Replies...It actually looks like it could BE a Bass Pro Shop. I could deal with the kitchen. But those huge rocks surrounding the wood burning stove... Horrible
Load More Replies...I would rather have a nice yard with those rocks and stuff than it being inside the house.
looks like a place where you need a maid (or more likely several) if the cleaning is not to kill you. Just imagine having to keep every nook and crany of those stones and antelers free from dust.
..."live in a Montana's..." Huh? Live in a Montana's WHAT? Title has me so confused. And yes, that stone fireplace is horribly ugly, IMO.
Me too! I was thinking Montana's was a restaurant or an outdoor/camping store. Are they referring to the state of Montana in the US?
Load More Replies...I can't quite make out what's in the middle of the pile of stones. Is it an oven? A TV?
Eh, this one's not the worst... Some people get REALLY into the rustic cabin look.
Up in MA this design is called "20th century architectural masterpieces by Gropius". But the MA ones don't have as much of a bunker feel as these do.
This is a cheapened version of adobe houses found all over the southwest. I say cheapened, because the real ones have style, color, character, and cool indigenous landscaping that complements them. These. Just. Don’t.
No. I think it's proof that the buildings are a disaster actually.
Load More Replies...Fire proof and tornado proof? maybe thats not the worse idea
The roofline on that turret looks like mortarboard chic. It just needs a tassel.
What I never understand is how you can have such a big house but choose to design it in a way that lets in very little natural light.
Every design makes a statement, I just can't figure out what this one is supposed to be.
Put the jewelry counter over there, racks of designer dresses and suits over there, some top line shoes and bags over there, and the cashier in the middle.
What furniture could you possibly buy that would make that house feel comfortable and well-scaled?
Perhaps spelled "G-u-c-h-i" (snarky but i couldn't resist)
Load More Replies...Tell me you're a pro athlete or a drug lord without telling me you're a pro athlete or a drug lord. There are a couple like this in Houston. With the money that was spent they could have had some really beautiful interiors, but nooooooooo.
While they probably cost more than most people make in a year, those drapes are hideous.
What is even happening with that black and white interior with single amber light?! Ugh!
So (un)stylish. So (im)personal. Imagine your kids running around inside on rainy days (until they slip and fall and crack their little skulls open, of course, and you know you’ll never get all the blood out of the tile)! What a (horrible) place to raise a family (don’t, just don’t, promise me you won’t)!
There is NOTHING chic about offices! Colourless and dull. Waste of good materials.
this looks like that one house i built in minecraft a couple years ago
Lay off the curtains, the statue and any odd color furniture and you have a nice house.
It’s the curtains. Without them it would be quite nice. And I kinda love the room on the bottom right. Maybe it reminds me of Austen movies or something.
agree about the cage, but otherwise i've seen worse:) Also, i think i would turn that setting-sun-shape into a window:)
Good call on the window. It would be much better!
Load More Replies...Those trees may mature into beauty. I'd die for that wrap around balcony. The gate is ugly, but when you have money, maybe that's something you need for safety.....Abortion Dr. in Texas, maybe?
Ehhh... I think it's going for a Tuscany look with Victorian trim and ghetto door cage.
Load More Replies...Actually loving the cage over the door thing - more safety and fewer sales people!
something about this house gives me creepy vibes. idk why (besides the hugggeee cage)
You taught me something new and I will use it whenever possible! Never heard "noped out" before 😂 ! Thank you!
Load More Replies...If you mean some sort of ivy that covers the entire wall as well as huge trees to ensure none of that horror show hits a passerby's eyes, than yes, I agree
Load More Replies...State housing in New Zealand looked like this in the 1960's. Landscaping was the same too.
Let's just agree that we have seen this typa house atleast once in our lifetime in our neighborhood too
No, it's really not awful. I'm not a fan of the whole "turret on a house" thing, but I'm not hating this either.
Load More Replies...Plush chairs in the bathroom…mmm mildew. Not to mention front row seats for the literal s*#t show. 💩
Every bath, and toilet comes with it's own "viewing chair"! That's a thing, right?...Right?...
Gauche? No, that’s French. Gaudy? No, that’s Catalonian. You know…you may be right?
Usually, it's because the exterior of the house has been renovated, but they kept the statue, which probably was a part of more elaborated decoration prior damages. In Rome, it might be caused by war.
There haven’t been any wars in Italy since that building was built. Probably 1960s, maybe 70s.
Load More Replies...In Belgium this is very common. Quite a few buildings and houses have a niche in the outside wall with a statue of mostly some biblical figure - Mary (with or without baby Jesus in her arms) - or a saint.
We have similar things in Germany. Little alcoves in exterior walls of normal houses with statues of Maria and such in them.
Why tf you get a downvote? I kinda like it too. Have an upvote.
Load More Replies...At least it's not a glass and concrete box. How many unusable spaces has it got?
Fill that with tasteful furniture with accents of color, beautiful art, and lots of books and plants and it will be wonderful.
But get rid of the hot pink and dusty rose (e.g. dirty pink) carpet, please! Paint the walls some soothing colors, put up lovely paintings, install bookcases and fill them with books you actually read—-NO f*****g idiotic color-coding of the bindings either!—-instead. You know, make the place look like a family actually LIVES there!
Load More Replies...I'm so sick over everything being whitewashed and greywashed. It's cold, sterile and depressing
Load More Replies...💖 all the space and the colors - you could put in a trapeze or trampoline and/or ride bikes in there...
Have you ever wanted to live in the hallway? We have the house for you.
This is actually really nice. Author is dead wrong and just doesn't like the style but it is pretty well executed. We live in New England and there is a shortage of decent contemporary homes around here.
It's not minimalism, it's just unfurnished, as in pre-sale. In Central Europe this is called "full-finished" house, as in the floors, walls, and ceilings are decorated and painted, sometimes even the kitchen is placed, but the new owners will bring in their furniture themselves.
I mean, it's not terrible, but I never much liked modern styles of architecture. Too much glass and clinical looking white walls and edges. :P
I don't get the too much glass thing. If the house is in a beautiful setting, I want about as much glass as I can get.
Load More Replies...I don‘t understand how this is poorly executed. What‘s wrong with this one?
Clearly the architect and the owners wanted different things - one wanted the sleek glass box, the other pitched roofs. Resulted in a characterless look.
If this was on the National Trust, it would almost be appropriate for the late 19th century. Almost.
What, now? It looks like it was co-designed by an entire class of first-years.
Yeah at least it is successful camoflaging the massive scale of the thing!
Load More Replies...Hmmm. Neo-classical-psuedo-European-canal-side-multi-use-reclaimed-mock-warehouse with a nod to retro-revival and a brother-in-law who sells exterior surface materials. Ho hum. See it every day, everywhere.
This looks almost exactly like the "mixed use" developments that have been going up where I live! Shops, restaurants & small offices on the ground floor, with residential units above, and parking garages at the end or in back. The architects have tried to make them look like some kind of village, with a mix of styles.
I wonder if the different occupying tenants got to choose their own exteriors? Or someone was trying to disguise an ugly office or apartment block as "old part of city with many different architectural styles"?
It kind of looks like the window ledges are designed as a climbing wall to make it easy to go window to window.
imagine shopping for curtains for that: I need on that is 1.5x0.3, on one that is 1.2x0.4, one that is 0.75x1.6, one that is 0.5x2.1 one that is 0.25x2.3, one that is 0.3x0.4.....
If the owner would only maintain the "gardens" surrounding this heap of bricks with a bit more fashion, color and care, it might have some potential, now it's just meh...
It has identity confusion - it doesn't know whether it's French chateau, American blah or Amish barn.
All that money for a giant custom house and not one custom window that works with the shape of the building?
No art or grace in the window placements. One can only wonder what the interior looks like.
What is up with hotels having one end done in different materials? It always looks like an afterthought.
They think it breaks up the line and is "interesting".
Load More Replies...Hope it's never built - looks very institutional, very prison like or at best, an industrial workshop.
What would they be parking in the garage with the super high door?
For some reason, this house looks abandoned to me. Even the poor bushes out front look like they're dying.
I kinda thought we might get through one of these without having a Trump hate. I'm as tired of the haters as I am of the man.
Interior bis kind of ok but what the fudge is wrong with the Exterior... Like Surrrr
Have you ever seen a gipsy castle in Romania? I guess those are worse..
oh those houses with like 3 layers of roofing?....eh they're not too terrible but a bit tacky... it's a shame because Romania has some absolutely beautiful actual castles and palace/manor houses.
Load More Replies...Those glass blocks aren't cheap! Someone paid a lot of money to have things look this way.
Load More Replies...It took my eyes a little too long to realize this was one picture. The left and right sides just didn't want to stitch together.
Built an extension to the front? Ruined what profile it might have had.

so basically me trying to build a house in the sims for my legacy challenge. xP

At least they can stay and enjoy themselves when a zombie apocolyps happens ;)
Ha! I thought those were stripes. The fact that they're shutters is silly.

I bet that this was once a much smaller late Victorian house, that had an extension added onto it, and again, and again.
Southern mansion wannabe at the front, no style at all around the side.
I mean it's neat, but that sapphire blue color doesn't mesh well with warm tan
It's like they stick their hand in a box of architectural blocks and just plonk down whatever they come up with.
More power to them! I gotta confess I kinda liked some of them. ( I've never been accused of good taste.) I gotta say though if built/ designed something with my money I'd do it how I wanted it. Other people's opinions wouldn't even be a factor.
On (I think) almost every post, there was a comment that's a scam. I found myself downvoting that because I've been scammed before and it's not fun
