Cats spend an average of 16 hours per day dozing off, and this is fine—it’s their choice. What’s a bit dodgier is that they do this in the most bizarre places ever. Like, terrariums, vases, laundry racks, trees, your bed, your dog’s mat, the list is never-ending. We documented this phenomenon in our previous articles here, here, and here.
At this point, it’s fair to say that cats would sleep anywhere except their perfectly fine, brand-new, super comfy, and very stylish cat beds. Does that mean you wasted your money on a cat tree? Well, kinda. And that vegan hipster mat you got your feline last Christmas? You could have splashed the money elsewhere.
But it's better to understand cat logic late than never, so please get ready for Bored Panda’s new list of cats who nap anywhere but where they should.

My bunny sometimes faces his butt at me and side-eyes me from over his bunny shoulder. That's how you know a rabbit is PRETTY annoyed. They also do a thing called foot-flicking, which is basically your bunny trying to flick dirt at you and using bunny body laungauage to curse.

To find out more about feline sleep peculiarities, Bored Panda reached out to Mikel Delgado, a postdoctoral fellow in animal behavior at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Mikel told us that as predators, cats tend to “work hard, sleep hard.”
But their sleeping patterns are quite different than ours. “Cats tend to sleep for short periods throughout the day and night, unlike humans, who tend to sleep in one long (hopefully!) bout.” In total, felines sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, and all that sleep helps them to “conserve energy for when they need it most—to hunt.”

Mikel also explained that most cats sleep a lot during the day since their humans aren’t at home and their environment isn’t active enough to keep them stimulated. “Providing your cat with a window perch, food puzzles, enrichment like cat grass, and safe solo play toys can help keep them more active when you are gone.”
It turns out, cats may be sleeping in all these weird places due to the fact that they fall asleep much more easily than we do. Plus, “they are also more flexible so they can fit into spaces that do not look comfortable to us.”

My cats have 2 full sized, 6' cat trees with heated pads on them in the living room plus 3 heated beds in the bedroom plus 2 additional non-heated ones. I accidentally left the top off my craft feathers that I painstakingly sorted by color and size and came back to this. He saw his opportunity and took it. Took me 45 minutes to re-sort everything. Mikel explained that some of those spaces may “provide cats with a sense of safety, or the ability to see what is going on in their environment.” Because even though we focus on cats as predators, they are also prey animals, so they need to be aware of what's going on around them.

The cat bed doesn’t smell like mom or dad. Animals who love us are comforted by our scent. Rub a clean towel on your face and head, then put it in the cat bed (and do it your own damn self this time, ya frickin’ Neanderthal!). Then watch the cat start sleeping in their bed a lot more.

We have mama cat and 3 six month old kittens of hers. They sleep on top, next to and between us. We ha e a small bookcase by the bed that u put our folded pants on the shelves for some reason. One kitty climbs up on a stack of folded pants and kicks off pants one by one until she finds a comfy one and sleeps there sometimes. So when I get up we have partially clean, now unfolded pants on the floor.

We did this with our dog when we banished him from the bed (he was getting overly territorial and snapping at us whenever we would move at night). He refused to sleep in it and was keeping us awake pacing around and moaning about it all night, so I decided to take an old towel, rub it on my face and head, and have my husband do the same. We put the towel in his bed and he jumped right in, whirled around to make his nest just right, and immediately fell asleep. The key was our combined scents, which made him feel secure and comfortable in the new bed.

I get my husband to sit on the cat bed when it's new or it's just been washed. It used to work, and they still fight to sit in his chair, but they no longer use the cat bed, no matter who's been sat on it

At least your cat just lays down on your bottled water. We have a 6 month old kitten who likes to attack full bottles of water. When I say attack, I mean using claws and teeth. Any idea what it’s like to grab a sealed bottle of water and have water spurt out of it from a small claw- or tooth-sized hole, either in the side or the cap? I had a cat that had a peculiar habit: she would curl up in a grocery bag like that one, my job was to gently pick it up by the handles and hang it from a doorknob. I did it first to tease her; she quickly learned to enjoy it and would curl up for an hour or so to nap. When done, she would slice out the bottom of the bag and drop down.

We have old-fashioned steam heat coil radiators in our older house. Our 18 year old cat has always gone to sleep on the radiators all winter (we put old towels or fleeces on them to make them softer). We rescued a 5 week old kitten (dumped by herself in our yard—-what kind of asshole does something like that?) in May, so cold weather and radiators are both brand new experiences for her. The other—-cold—-day, the older cat jumped up on one of the warm radiators and fell asleep. Maybe 10 minutes later, I saw the kitten jump up and do the same thing on another radiator, just like the 18 year old!

That's because your cat is cold. You should get the pet warming pads that you can put in their beds. Sometimes you can't understand cat logic, but in this case it's very clear what your cat is trying to tell you. I have the warming pads all over the house for my two, they love them.

We lived in an old house for several years that had the old-fashioned iron radiators, and these were flat on top. So my mother folded up a couple of towels into a nice thick pad, and our cat would sleep on that radiator in front of the kitchen window until she was so toasty she was in bliss. Silly creature -- but cats love heat. You might figure out a way to make a comfy bed right near a heater (that's won't catch fire!) and see if your kitty will use it, since they like the heat so much already.

My cat would lay on top of the cage so she could attack my rabbits through the top, as it was made from those customizable metal shelf squares and her paw could reach through. However, she would also enjoy sleeping in the cage, I had repurposed an old cat bed for the rabbit, and she loved it.

It just doesn’t have the same”feel” to it. — Nearly all these cats seem to prefer something hard, flat, and/or square to the super cushy, over stuffed, or hammock like beds and cat trees their people buy for them. — Cat bed makers need to get a clue. It isn’t what appeals to the owner, but what appeals to the cat that counts. Do they test these beds on actual cats?

I have two Sherpa carriers that are top and front loading. My tortoiseshell always decides that she wants to be a star and extends all her limbs, all to avoid getting into the carrier. So, yes, I know exactly what you mean.

You better pay house visiting the cat when you go on a trip or ask neighbors to come by a few times a day. A kennel is a horrible place for them and cause a lot of stress. Cats don’t like changes and don’t feel safe when they are not in their own home, this is so heartbreaking

My dad built a cat tree for me 18 years ago. The house portion looks just like this one. The cat tree has been well-loved by my cats, my parents' cats, and kittens. And they have actually napped on it.

TL;DR: People don't understand cats and think they're small clawed dogs or kids you can bend to your will. Cats will think outside the box, but mostly sit inside the box.

My cat was worst than a dog, i have a dog that is worst than a cat now. My cat was always with me, at university, air bnb, any room. The pic where my cat is using a tiny place before his hommock? It's because his hooman found this thing on the streets, thought it was the good size, but it was not. He was happy and didn't want to hurt my feelings. I adopted him and he was just happy and using anything i will give him. He had a great life with me for less than one year, the shelter made money on him with a pulmonary cancer. I spent more than 4000 euros for him, he was a treasure, i will never ever trust a shelter. dscn2718-5...635198.jpg

Seems like cats enjoy the feeling of small enclosed spaces and being high up. Smooth solid walls (like cardboard boxes) may appeal to them more than a soft cushion open to the room. Think of defensibility, comforting smells, familiarity. Plan around your cat's needs and desires.

true, a lot of cat bed companys are like "a soft, cushy, cat bed your cat will love" and its like no, no they will not love that. they will love a stiff soft bed. they are not humans. (my theory is that they feel like their sinking into it and avoid it for that reason)

Never bought my cats a bed. Waste of money. Take a cardboard box, maybe an old sweatshirt which smells like the owner (in my case the sweatshirt I used to wear horseback riding) and put it in a shelf so it's not that much of an open space and a little bit higher up and done. Happy cat :)

I think that when you crochet something for them they like it because it has your smell all over it. My cats always prefer things I crochet over brand new things

Cats are the most interesting animal in the world! Their logic is beyond understanding. I have 3 and they drive my husband insane because he's logical. He's also a dog person! I don't think we wil ever understand them.

This reminds me of a poem I learned as a child. Cats Sleep Anywhere by Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965) Cats sleep anywhere, any table, any chair. Top of piano, window-ledge, in the middle, on the edge. Open drawer, empty shoe, anybody's lap will do. Fitted in a cardboard box, in the cupboard with your frocks. Anywhere! They don't care! Cats sleep anywhere.
