I think playing football made me seem more sociable that I am but it was so much easier because technically you don't have to interact with anyone, just pass the ball.

on the plus side folks with high functioning anxiety are great in emergencies. When it hits the fan we're like "right, this is what I was expecting all along, let's do this"

I once had somebody tell me I was the most laid-back grad student they'd ever met! ...They had no idea that I was on anxiety meds at the time, and even I didn't know at that early date that I had undiagnosed PTSD... You really can't tell by looking at person if they're having mental health problems.

Once, a dear friend reminded me that it’s totally okay to start something and not succeed or even finish it. My new favorite hobby is to start things. I love starting things. I’m so happy. And I couldn’t care less if I don’t finish or succeed! So - permission to you all to start something, just give it a try - you don’t have to do it well or even finish it!

Try it with simple Tasks. Tasks where the outcome would not be Bad if failed but good if succeed. If you ask yourself, "what is the worst that could happen.?" and the answer is "nothing" or "nothing i could not handle", you should probably try it. And when the outcome was not good but could be good, try it again, because nothing Bad happened. Maybe involve a friend. If you are stressed with being on time, tell the friend, then make a Date and try to be there on time. If you are not, the friend will still be there - maybe the tea has become cold but nothing Bad happened. of course it needs practise to get used to failures but little steps are Better than none. Keep ging. Congratulate yourself for Victorys and don't underestimate true friends. They will help you. Though, this is my Personal experience. Still failing but became more relaxed if so. It is Part of the way and nobody is or has to be perfect

In my opinion, winning therapy is telling your therapist just enough so that they can help you but never so such all at once that they have you put on an involuntary hold.

Anxiety disorders can affect people of virtually any age group. For school kids in particular, anxiety is often mistaken for something else like upset stomach, acting out, ADHD and even learning disorders, according to Child Mind Institute.

Speaking of school kids, it has to be noted that there are many different kinds of anxiety. That is one of the reasons it can be hard to detect in the classroom. According to neurologist Ken Schuster, PsyD, what they all have in common is that anxiety “tends to lock up the brain” and in turn make school very hard for anxious kids.

I hate how sometimes trauma harden you so much that when people tell things they've gone through you just feel: oh okay... What do you want to eat today? Like you know you should feel with them because its bad and something that effect them but you just can't feel sympathy due to being so used to messed up sh*t that it doesn't even face you. And that makes you feel horrible because you should care and react, right?

That's happened a few times for me. I will tell a 'relatable' story and everyone is just quiet. They don't even comment or ask questions. It's only after I have said it do I realize just how weird and strange some of my experiences actually are. More recently during the quarantine after re-reading my journals from my twenties that I sit there and stare at something I wrote, remembering what caused me to write it and then I am WTF? I mentioned the event to some coworkers because I thought it was interesting, but they said they really didn't want to know anymore. So now I'm trying to find out what happened to me back then. How do you investigate your own backstory?

I reread my dream journals and laugh-- I dreamt once that I was walking down my street, but it was just a museum exhibit about my street, and when I got to my house, it was the museum cafe. Other than that, I think I'm too young to investigate my backstory :)

My granny used to tell childhood stories about my mom that nearly made me cry... she would wrap the vacuum around the two year old because she was desperately afraid of the thing. While my mom did not move my gran could do her housework "in peace" - or when my mom was like five, she went playing outside (German city with lots of back areas) when gran called her for lunch she would not come, and when she finally arrived gran would grab her, push her in the bedroom, lock the door - (because the grandfather would try to intervene) and punish her with a cloth hanger. "She never came back late for lunch" was always her last sentence. And everybody laughed. Except me.

Ridiculous - sleep in whatever form is the bodies and brains way of recharging themselves. When I was a very, very stressed Chef many years ago, I would regularly get by on 5 hours sleep a night, but on my rare days off would quite happily crash for up to 16 hours, get up, eat, go to the pub, meet friends etc, then go back to the mental regime for the next 5 or 6 days. It nearly killed me - 2 heart attacks and a mental breakdown - but not caused through lack of sleep.

Bored Panda reached out to Claire E. Cameron, an associate professor of learning and instruction at University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education, to find out more about young sufferers of anxiety and ways to help it.

According to Cameron, there is still a lot of stigma when it comes to talking about mental health. “Teachers should learn to listen to youth in a non-judgmental way and help them work with a school counselor or other trusted adult, if the need is beyond the teacher’s training level.”

Moreover, “Teachers can also incorporate social-emotional learning into their teaching and need to model healthy self-care such as getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, and practicing mindfulness. Re-focusing students on their strengths and assets is critical,” Cameron added.

I've had a store employee follow me through the entire store and literally grab me near the exit and accuse me of stealing. I panicked and told her that I hadn't found what I was looking for and wanted to leave without buying anything. Apparently that was highly suspicious of me and warranted dragging me around like the "thief" I was. Shopping hasn't been very fun since then

Most importantly, helping youth to identify the ideas they feel good about and making them feel good is key in easing early anxiety in school children. Cameron says it can be anything from activities they enjoy doing, like sports or theater, to volunteering (not going on their phones). “And then spending as much of their time and attention on those things,” the professor noted.

I stress and procrastinate for three days before making one phonecall. I *know* that the "need to do this" period is usually more stressful than actually doing the thing, but procrastinate anyway.

I just did that exact thing! I've needed to call my doctor for a new prescription for weeks now. I finally did it today because I'm about to run out of it completely. I've been stressing about making the call more than running out of my meds. Also, I've needed to complete something at work since last week, but I just couldn't manage to take care of it until today - before I got in trouble for not doing it! Why can't my brain just be normal? ;)

Yes ! I do the exact same thing!! I know I’m going through depression and anxiety, actually taking meds for them. Since the death of my husband, my depression is much worse understandably. I’m learning so much from this forum. Like fighting myself to get out of bed to get somewhere on time. I find it a weird side effect to my ailment.

Our culture tends to value people’s outward appearance and achievements, the professor argues. “Yet where human beings find meaning is in strong healthy relationships and doing work (including academic work) that contributes to the community and to a sense of greater good.”

According to the professor, teachers can involve students in service learning projects to help students connect what they are learning in school to the outside world.

My former therapist talked about this a lot too. We have stone age brains and they do not always like the modern world. A lot of the way they try to keep us alive, like fear/anxiety is counterproductive to modern society.

Natural selection operates on species. The characteristics of the individual are significant only so much as the effect the survival of the species.. There's no reason the process which created us shouldn't create miserable individuals who destroy themselves, provided they reproduce before doing so. ¶ Such survival characteristics are defined by a given environment. It's perfectly possible for the whole process to produce a species that's wildly successful in an environment of eight thousand individuals, but doomed to self-extinction with eight billion. ¶ Inasmuch as it implies advancement, evolution is a misnomer . There is no advancement, only change. Natural selection simply wanders. There is no progress, direction, or goal. It keeps on keeping on. Humans aren’t the pinnacle of some intentional process. To believe otherwise is to have absurd expectations for our variety of sad ape, and to live in continual disappointment.

Your third paragraph is what really underscores the point being made in this one. It's very easy to conflate evolution with progress when, in practicality, it only means change. But it *is* easier to understand the distinction between progress and change, as they are not necessarily the same thing. If it were to be argued that there is a goal of the evolutionary system, it would only be survival. That's all evolution seeks out.

In my mid 20 I did this... went over ever possible out come trying to make a decision ... it was horrible. I realized I could keep doing that. I also realized any decision could have bad consequences. So I decided it did matter, I would deal with anything that happened (good or bad). Never had this type of anxiety again. I feel like I gave myself the power to make mistakes and fix them, or something like that.

Ken Schuster, PsyD, who was a former teacher, told Child Mind Institute that you could see it in a child’s behavior that they were having anxiety issues. “Back when I was teaching, I would notice that when I had to call on someone, or had to figure out whose turn it was to speak, it was like the anxious kid always tended to disappear.”

“The eager child is making eye contact, they’re giving you some kind of physical presence in the room like ‘Call on me, call on me!’”

As I've gotten older, and now that I'm a Librarian, I've actually been reading most of my books on my phone or my kindle. I love physical books, but sometimes the words blur together and I find I can't read as well as I used to. When it's condensed down on a Kindle, where it has a limited amount of space per page, I find it easier for my mind to focus on the written word.

An article on childhood trauma suggested copious reading as a child/teen is a sign of severe trauma. Your brain is trying to protect you from the consequences of the trauma so you read incessantly. My family jokes how I read 4 or 5 books a week. After I started therapy and faced some of the effects of trauma I don’t read nearly as much. My brain doesn’t have to constantly ‘hide’ the pain.

However, when kids are anxious about answering questions in class, they act the opposite. “They’re going to break eye contact, they might look down, they might start writing something even though they’re not really writing something. They’re trying to break the connection with the teacher in order to avoid what’s making them feel anxious,” Schuster explained.

I have different vocal tics and patterns for different types of people. If I'm with my goth friends, it's a deeper, more grungy voice. If I'm around coworkers or new people, it's more of a bubbly approachable voice. If I'm talking to that weird shadow in the corner that keeps me company, it's my normal voice that's a little nasally and kinda pathetic.

My friends told me i was a warrior. My wings were broken, but they'll be here to help me to fight. I cried for hours , and never forgot this. I wish for all of you to get better and find the support you need. I don't know you, but i'm sure you're amazing. Take care😊

I know this isn't what this entry was about but JIC. Make sure your cats (and dogs and Im sure other animals) aren't licking salt lamps. They can become kinda addicted like how our brain works with salt and it CAN lead to salt toxicity. Just sayin, keep an eye out

Nice sentiment. But in real life those salt lamps can be deadly to cats: they lick them and their kidneys can't handle so much salt. Please be careful with your kitties (but keep thinking about the compliments you received, they are good for you).

Depends what state you're in. If you're just generally whining about sth in that mood, no. Life is hard sometimes and we shouldn't base our life solely on our moods. But if you're seriously in a mental health hole, then yes, take time off to heal.

As a machinist in US I would be laughed at if I took a mental health day. I get eye rolls when I call out cuz I’m sick or my daughter is sick. A joke. So if I need mental health day or 2 I just say sick or purely… I won’t be in today. They won’t control me

Just so everyone knows: Americans CAN get intermittent leave for depression and/or anxiety under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or Family Medical Leave Act. I've had this, I was allowed to call off work 3x a month. You'll need to speak to HR and your doctor/therapist, which can seem overwhelming and scary when you're depressed, but it's worth it bc your brain needs to heal sometimes. https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/legal-and-compliance/employment-law/pages/keys-to-fmla-ada-compliance-for-mental-health-are-communication-flexibility.aspx

My old boss called in to get the day off work because he had just found a note from his fiancé, breaking up with him. Our manager, who is usually pretty good at giving time off had to say "we have no one to cover you, you need to go in". This fuelled him to go in and work extra hard, as an F-you.

I never knew so many people had anxiety like I have. If I’m having anxiety about getting something done, and then I finally accomplish that goal, I just move on to the next anxiety filled thought… I keep hoping once I accomplish fixing that issue, I will have a break from my anxiety, but it never really goes away and just moves on to another thought.

Someone rang in to the science program that is on a popular radio station every week, asking why this happens, as he found he was doing this every day for a week or more. The scientist (Dr Karl Kruszelnicki) said he didn't know, but there is evidence to show that some people just seem programed to do that.

Gen X here with boomer parents. Therapy was NOT an option - even when my body totally shut down and doctors advised it, I was less than a day out of over a month in hospital and my mum thinks what I need is a job to take my mind off it. She gets upset in an argument 20 years later and spends a few months with a therapist because, well that's different and is now back to complaining why today's youngsters are always going on about mental health. Otherwise she is nice and rational - but on therapy as crazy as an anti vaxer.

Which is all fine and dandy when the stress is a bear and once you’re out of the situation your brain can slowly decompress, but not so good when stress is your constant state of being… So technically when you’re suffering from the stress of modern life you can blame your ancestors and evolution for it being so excruciating.

The problem is that the bear incident would be an occasional thing, and afterwards your tribe would sit with you, and praise or comfort you, and give you time to wind down... Now, we have about 50 mini stressors just getting to work, and no time for a fireside wind-down (yes, I know I'm romanticising it, but you know what I mean). So we're constantly wound up like the Duracell bunny, with no way to run off steam and relax.

Ex Chef here - 37 years in front of the tops / ovens ; most of my working career was spent managing mental amounts of stress which was mostly dealt with by industrial amounts of drugs - uppers, downers, in betweeners, Dope, Coke and Weed ; happy days, apart from the overdoses, suicides and heart attacks ...... Out of the madness now and would never advise anyone to go into catering.

It's called hedonic adaptation. You always come back down to a stable baseline of happiness. The good(bad) thing about it is that it works for unhappiness too.

As much as anxiety is problematic, it seems that that sensation is shared by most individuals as general state of being. I am thinking that our ancestors had anxiety in order to constantly be aware and ready to be killed by a giant ground sloth. let us try to find the evolutionary cause to anxiety and come to grips with it. Easier said than done but i am trying to be positive.

Yup. Repression is how we cope. Once you open the cupboard, everything goes to smash, and you have to clean up the mess. If you're only just coping with today, it's hard to open up past traumas and deal with that too, even if in the long term you might be better for having done so.

Same here. I’m going to sound really old when I say this, but here I go. Keep pushing through it. Breathe. Pet a puppy. Find one thing. Doesn’t have to be beautiful, or amazing. I have a plant on my windowsill. When I water the plant, I take a drink myself. Eventually you’ll learn that everything need a little love. But you’re not the only one who has to give it to the world.

Same here. If it is one of my few friends , I’ll respond almost immediately (once I ensure that I have the proper response). If it is a emotionally abusive person, I’ll wait a bit , but not too long so they don’t lash out. , but just enough that I can decrease my amount or required interaction with them.

Me: *reveals some of the innermost cringes of my brain Therapist: "Lets go far a walk, I want to show you something" Walk is a hike to edge of volcano. Therapist: "EVERYONE is like the earth, deep under the surface a seething cauldron of turmoil, which will inevitably burst through. It is my job to help folks realise this and help them dissipate the pressures and avoid an eruption that with devastate everyone and everything around them. No one is so depraved or damaged that we cannot help them!" Me: *spills guts on very dark secret and desire. Therapist: * shoves me into volcano, takes out notebook and writes "ALMOST no one"

There's nothing wrong with stepping outside "for some air". We can all get overloaded and we can step away if we want. Nobody cares if you do, they're more concerned with themselves so just remove yourself and reset.

As a cashier I stopped answering the “hey how you doing?” greeting cus I was pregnant and massively depressed and I hate that greeting because they’re not actually asking. But I had some people get legit upset that I didn’t give them an answer and a lot of people gave me weird looks when I wouldn’t respond.

No lie, if I was trying to be friendly and asked a cashier that was checking me out “hello how are you?” and they straight up didn’t respond but kept scanning and bagging my groceries I might act a bit uncomfortable too, I wouldn’t know what to do and as a socially awkward human I would probably feel embarrassed myself 😅 (there’s certainly a time and place for your kind of response but it’s probably not while you’re at work interacting with customers. Sometimes the simple gesture of exchanging a handful of friendly pleasant words with a total stranger means more than the specific words themselves, if I’m making sense - instead of hearing a customer coldly and uncaringly say “how are you?” try to picture it as the customer saying *FRIENDLY NOISES!* You just gotta make some friendly noises right back, thats the point of the interaction between customer and employee, not to genuinely check on each others’ welfare. People/customers just want to buy their stuff and go home, don’t treat them rudely for trying to make the one mandatory interaction positive 🙂) but I understand where you’re coming from, it sucks that we don’t expect a genuine answer when we ask people “how are you?” But on that note - if no one has asked lately, how are you, genuine question/genuine answer? :)

This is my sister! Mum gets fooled by it though and starts suggesting what she should order, when all she ever orders is a schnitzel (from the senior's menu if possible) with extra lemon.

I always order a burger with just ketchup and cheese on top :) my friends keep saying it’s gross and I should stop, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. EDIT: I’m confused as to why I was downvoted, I’m not forcing you to try it. I’m just sharing how I relate to the meme, and it’s not hurting anyone so have a nice day 🙂

Well for years it was overly excessive amounts of alcohol but now it's a handful of chocolate chips. Looking up!

Garlic bread. Oreos. Fries. Fruit juice (flavor doesn’t matter). Huge bowl of salad so I don’t feel like I’m trash. Marshmallows.

Yumyum noodles and an entire bag of chips usually. The fact that I'm not dead from salt and carb overdose yet is astonishing, so I guess I've got that going for me which is nice..

Coffee, although I pretty much live off the caffeine most times.

Because sometimes people with depression (like me) get the munchies. Like how you sit down to watch TV and find yourself snacking endlessly on chips. It’s something that helps in a small way, plus, hey, you’re eating. :)
