"I used to draw comics when I was a kid. Action comics, funny comics, and Dungeons and Dragons comics were my favorite to draw and write. Then as I got older, I started really sketching seriously and painting black light posters," the cartoonist shared when asked about the beginning of his comic journey. John also mentioned that he’s self-taught, with no formal artistic education: “I never took classes. I learned from my mistakes. I’m still learning. I read books here and there and picked other artists' brains for tips."
As the title of the series suggests, ‘Fruits Gone Bad’ focuses on fruits; however, veggies and other food products also make appearances in the strips. The artist shared with us more about characters and their personalities: “I love relating these jokes to real life. The personalities of the subjects are based on the everyday feelings and lives of people. It really depends on the comic that I’m working on. Sometimes it can get strange, like a Twilight Zone situation or a scene out of a noir movie. The end goal is to make people laugh and think!"
We wanted to know how John comes up with ideas for his strips. He kindly explained: "Well, I've always believed that the world needs a bit more laughter, especially now. Humor can be found in the most ordinary places. Just observing life, be it a playful fruit or the night sky, can spark an idea. Puns, well, they've been a guilty pleasure of mine. I aim for my comics to be a quick chuckle in someone's day, nothing too heavy."
Lastly, King kindly responded to our question about his personal favorite character in the series: "That's like asking a parent to choose a favorite child! Each fruit brings its own flavor to the canvas. But if I had to choose, I'd say the humble apple. It's so versatile and expressive, and there are so many varieties to play with – from the rosy red to the green granny smith. Each apple character ends up being as unique as the fruit itself!"
I have never tasted, or seen, pumpkin spice anything. I'm guessing it's like Marmite, you either love it or hate it?
