“You Wore This To My Wedding”: Karma Shows Up To Wedding, Leaving Bride Red With Embarrassment

Interview With Expert

The median age for marriage in the US is approximately 30.5 years for men and 28.6 years for women. So it’s no surprise that when Reddit user Kimberlyn008 and her friends were finishing up their twenties, the group found themselves in the midst of wedding season, a time filled with joy, love, and—of course—a bit of drama. In a post on r/CharlotteDobreYouTube, the woman revealed that everything culminated after one of the brides arrived at another one’s ceremony wearing a white dress—a major no-no in wedding etiquette.

Generally, it’s inappropriate for guests to wear white to a wedding

We can say that the modern tradition of the white wedding dress began when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840. Back then, she selected a white satin gown lavishly embellished with lace that was handcrafted in England. After the photographs of the wedding spread across the general public, brides began copying Victoria’s style by wearing white gowns to their own nuptials. Now, it’s the norm.

“White is traditionally saved for the bride so as to not upstage or draw attention to anyone else on her special day,” Diane Gottsman, a well-respected etiquette expert and founder of the Protocol School of Texas, a company specializing in adult corporate and social etiquette training, told Bored Panda.

“It’s better to stay completely away from the color white,” Gottsman added. “It’s not worth taking the risk of offending the bride, and there will be plenty of opportunities for you to wear white on other occasions. Just not the wedding.”

When you’re a guest, the most important thing to keep in mind is not to upset the couple, so be careful about wearing cream or ivory outfits as well.

Furthermore, this rule isn’t exclusive to women. “Men should also refrain, simply because it’s the bride and groom’s day and wearing white takes attention away from them,” Gottsman, who also wrote the book Modern Etiquette for a Better Life, said.

But if we’re only talking about a white button-up shirt underneath your suit or tuxedo jacket, that can be acceptable. Generally, think of it this way: if you’re questioning whether an outfit looks a little too white, it probably is. Many popular brands (like Anthropologie, Reformation, and Lulus) take the guessing game out of shopping by offering curated wedding guest collections. By using these lists, you can discover wedding-worthy outfits that don’t conflict with traditional etiquette. Or, if you don’t want to purchase the outfit, rental sites like Nuuly, Rent the Runway, and The Black Tux offer a wide selection you can get for a few days. Before you choose a new wedding outfit, it’s a good idea to poll a few friends to see what they think of the look (and the color).

Women might get away with a knee-length gown that includes white elements as part of a larger pattern. “If there is a tiny hint of white in the background of the pattern, it’s fine but nothing that is overly apparent,” Gottsman said.

But from what we can gather, it sounds like Taylor wasn’t interested in any of that and didn’t care about making a scene. And when the author of the post uploaded a picture of the dress in question, at least to my untrained eye, it did look very white. Plus, the fact that Taylor was very angry at Sarah when she showed up to her wedding in the same dress kind of proves that it was a malicious choice.

If the dress is white (and you wore it to my wedding), then it's all right (that I wear it to yours!) TWINSIES!

Reminds me of another story. The bride goes shopping with mother, and they choose a gorgeous MOB dress. A couple of weeks later bride is visiting father and step-mother, and step-mother shows off her outfit for the wedding - the exact same dress. Bride begs her to wear something else, but "No, this is perfect for me, and I'm wearing it, make your mum get a different outfit." Mother of bride, when hearing about it, chooses a new outfit, and tells her daughter "Don't worry, love, I know the perfect occasion for the first dress; I'll wear it to the rehearsal dinner."

Woman: Can I wear a white dress to the wedding? "No! You're evil for even thinking that!" Man: Can I wear the same colour as the groom to the wedding? "You could wear the exact same suit and nobody would even blink an eye"

Unpopular opinion here... it never entered my head that people shouldn't wear white to my wedding. It was pretty obvious I was the bride (flowers, veil, one at the front saying vows). No way I was so insecure that I thought only the colour of my dress defined me that day.

What I don't get is why people continue to be friends with a !@#$ like Taylor? The petty revenge is great, but why is OP continuing hanging out a clearly toxic person? Just drop the friend already!

I have four kids, the youngest (15f) has opened my eyes to the horrible s**t that girls say and do to girls. Not cute “mean girls” s**t, actual emotional and physical harm for reasons that are so small and petty. Meanwhile, her three older brothers (24m, 20m, and 18m) all have long friendships where they support each other. They call or come by when they’re not feeling well. They give rides when someone doesn’t have a car, they buy food when someone doesn’t have money, and they celebrate each other’s “wins”. A couple of their friends even stopped at the hospital to drop off flowers when my wife had a weeklong stay (better now). My daughter’s “friends”, would never. I pray she finds her people some day. BTW, her guy friends, are all salt of the earth and friendly. My wife says that women do this to women all the time and age doesn’t make a difference. I’ve had the same best friend since I was 12. The first rule to having a friend is to be a friend.

I really don't get this fuss over white clothes on guests. Focus on your day, not what other people might wear or do. White for a wedding dress is pretty old school anyway, loads of my friends didn't even wear white. Doesn't suit a lot of people either.

What ever happened to “I want you to share in my special day”. What the hell is it with bride who dictate what you wear, wear your hair, or exclude you because your pregnant. What a backstabbing circus weddings have become. I personally think, based on experience, that the huge wedding extravaganza shouldn’t happen till after they’re married for at least five years. Hell, many of them won’t be together that long. And spending what amounts to a down payment on a house for a few fleeting hours nobody will remember is just nonsense.

I do not get the blanket “women shall not wear white (that doesn’t look like a wedding gown) at a wedding because it upstages the bride” edict. Are men restricted in the same way? I say let your guests be comfortable.

I agree; it's stupid and tells me that the bride is some combination of insecure and demanding. And so many of them take it to the extreme that you can't wear anything that has the slightest bit of white on it (like a few white flowers on a floral print dress)

This is so childish. If you feel like hurting someone (back) on her wedding day, than you're no friend and you don't belong there. Weddings are to celebrate and enjoy the happiness and love of the bride and groom. If you can't do that, just stay home.
