“My freedom ends where yours begins” is a simple idea that we should all keep in mind during the coronavirus pandemic. Wearing face masks has become an issue that’s fracturing the United States in half. One side believes that we should all wear face masks to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus. The other side believes that nobody has the right to tell them what to wear and do.

Now, more than ever, each and every person’s actions can have huge effects. To show that we should all be mindful of our communities and that we ought to protect our friends and neighbors, Twitter user Libby Jones posted a great analogy about the Freedom Cafe.

RELATED:

In the last 2 weeks, there has been an 80% increase in the number of new confirmed coronavirus cases in the US. However, some people still refuse to wear masks

This made-up Freedom Cafe lets everyone do as they please. Patrons can come in with or without masks. However, all the employees are allowed to do whatever they like as well, whether it’s touching your food (don’t worry, they washed their hands) or choosing to cook chicken at whatever temperature they choose to. Libby’s post is a great analogy for how completely unbound freedom can lead to chaos. Some limits and rules are good. Especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Libby’s post went viral with over 7.7k likes and 5k retweets on Twitter. After that, it spread to other websites, including the online image sharing community Imgur where it got over 9.6k upvotes in less than a day.

The coronavirus situation in the US is getting worse and worse. In the last 2 weeks, there has been an 80 percent increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases in the US, according to The New York Times.

Meanwhile, the country is raising the bar with its numbers of newly confirmed positive coronavirus cases nearly every day. On Wednesday, July 1, 52,982 people in the US tested positive. It’s a new one-day record.

Because of this, some states are rolling back plans to loosen quarantine regulations. For instance, the BBC reports that New York has paused its plans to allow indoor dining. The situation is so serious that even President Donald Trump has changed his opinion and stated that he’d wear a face mask “in a tight situation.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious diseases expert in the US, said that the consequences could be dire if this surge isn’t controlled. “We got hit very badly, worse than any country, with regard to the number of cases and the number of deaths. The problem we’re facing now is that in an attempt to so-called reopen or open the government and get it back to some form of normality, we’re seeing very disturbing spikes in different individual states in the US,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today program.

This brings us back to Libby’s Twitter thread: freedom is great but rules are necessary for Freedom Cafe to run smoothly.

Too many US residents don't understand the true meaning of liberty. Freedom is not an absolute. Also, they can't distinguish inconvenience from oppression. It's one thing to risk your life for freedom, but another entirely to risk the lives of others for your "freedom."

And trump thinks people wear masks to spite him. I see a bunch of people in my red state not wearing masks. And once again, getting in their trump stickered trucks. Y'all may think I'm over exaggerating but I'm not. Every time I leave the house I see at least 3 or 4 trump stickered trucks with American and confederate flag stickers or actual flags flying off the back. This is one reason I say the American flag now makes me uncomfortable. I'm in the deep south. I think me and my family are the only democrats.

Wearing a mask is just common courtesy. Unfortunately, because of a few people we may have to mandate courtesy. If wearing a mask is the worst thing that ever happened to you or even just the most inconvenient thing that's happened to you, you've led a very pampered life.

Literally had a 60 year old woman throwing an hours long temper tantrum because we took her freedom by not letting her dish her own food. We're operating as a cafeteria instead of a buffet, due to the virus. She called me dumb stupid and idiot. Threw some swear bombs-RUINED the experience for the unfortunate two other tables on that side of the restaurant. This wasn't even about a mask. People are overly obsessed with their freedom. We, as a nation, are incredibly selfish. Masks indoors is the law in my state. I feel safer at work. People take it a lot better when I remind them.

Purple pill Pete no one is saying people don't die everyday. What is being said is it's preventable! Less people will die if you wear a god damn mask! Isn't that enough of a reason for f***s sake!! If something is preventable on a mass scale why wouldn't you just do the right and kind thing for the greater good??! It doesn't hurt you for Christ's sake! Even if one life is saved that should be enough! I can't believe this is even being debated! Omg!!

I do have some doubts about the efficacy of face masks against covid-19. If my government says I should wear them at certain places, I would, though. I wash my hands, keep distance, etc. Non-medical masks don't usually stop the virus, though they do make you touch your face less, and spread less saliva around, so that's a positive. In my country, we're only obligated to wear a (non-medical) mask in public transport and taxis/ubers. One of the downsides: people immediately get closer to one another (which is more dangerous in the end), talking louder, laughing more, going out more... In summary: false safety. Not even talking about many people not wearing the mask (and putting it on and off your face) the right way. So yeah, face masks could maybe help a little, but ONLY if all the other measures are also complied.

We should use the same analogy for healthcare practice: Welcome to our hospital. Please note that in favour of protecting civil liberties, empowering our staff and allowing everyone to do as they bloody well please... our clinical team MAY OR MAY NOT wash their hands, wear PPE, sterilise instruments, adopt single-use devices, clean our hospital bays etc. Medication may have expired, equipment won't be tested or maintained and we don't tend to follow best practice clinical guidelines. Because, I mean, why would you?? It's so dull and restrictive. This may significantly compromise your chances of survival through increase mortality rates, but hey... who cares?!

There are people saying that Covid is a governmental excuse to control us in Italy too. But honestly everybody is following the rules then - like, masks are still compulsory to enter shops and indoor areas, and people wear them. It's never become a political thing here, even though conspirationists exist here too.

"Nobody has the right to tell them what to do or wear" - including themselves. Unbelievable. I suppose it will take them - or, sadly, someone near them - getting sick and dying for them to change their tune. It is slowly changing, and hopefully a mandatory law with teeth will be implemented in January 2021 with the new political scene.

Suppose Citizens have the freedom to not wear masks, then they also have a right to contract the infection, and the right to suffer from it. But do they have the right to spread the infection to others, to risk the doctors and nurses who are honour bound to treat them? Why should the doctors risk their life to treat someone too stupid to take precautions (Hats of to all the Doctors, nurses, paramedics, sanitary workers, and all frontline warriors)

This is brilliant! Perhaps those who wear masks should trail antimaskers in stores (six feet away of course) while yapping loudly on our cell phones, using profanity and burping here and there, so we can show them what disrespect, ignorance and SELFISHNESS feels like. Or maybe I should yap endlessly on my phone in the movie theater? Not wearing a mask isn't about freedom. It comes down to those certain personalities who can only see as far as their own nose. There is selfishness and selflessness. The world has always been full of both. But if more people understood that the ultimate goal is to strive towards losing the ego and becoming more selfless, ALL things would greatly improve. It's undeniable that all living things can be selfish in one way or another. But come on people. We are talking about a highly infectious, deadly disease here. Not who gets to choose what's for dinner. So please, put on your mask (and put the shopping cart back where it belongs) and cut the c**p out. :)

What worries me is articles like this polarise the situation. There are people out there who genuinely can't wear a mask for a variety of medical reasons (myself included). For these people, wearing a mask can land them in hospital but they often struggle to justify it when confronted or refused service. Don't lump us in with the idiots who choose not to die ideological reasons.

I think I understand what you're trying to say. I have asthma and wearing a mask is very uncomfortable because it reduces my already reduced air flow... Guess what? I still wear a mask when I need to go out, because I still breath better than if I was stricken by Coronavirus! Of course, I try my best to keep safe, socially distant, and avoid putting myself in dangerous/crowded situations. I will always choose to wear a mask because it is currently the only known preventative option in existence. Maybe you should carry a doctor's note explaining their exemption for you to skip wearing a mask? I truly hope you and your family stay healthy.

Businesses can also dictate if you wear a mask in their places as well but people want to throw a fit when asked to leave. Their business their rules. So wear a mask when required. Same as no shoes no shirt no service. Not it pertains to masks. Not hard to understand or comply. Don't shop at places that require it and go get sick somewhere else. Just hope you don't kill someone I guess. FFS

"Liberty consists in the freedom to do everything which injures no one else." - France's Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789. People abuse the term of freedom way too often...

Omg!!

I'm only wearing a mask because I don't want to die before November 3rd. (For non-Yanks, that's the day we'll be voting the Tangerine Turd out of office)

I don't think this works as an analogy. You CAN choose not to go to this restaurant and stay safe. I CANNOT choose to stay safe if people are not wearing masks at the grocery store...

I should be able to drive my car with a blindfold. If you don't like it, stay at least 6 feet away. Even if you are in line at the drive thru.

Obviously Libby doesn’t know the difference between telling employees what they must do and the government telling citizens what to do! Private businesses can do as they wish but the US Government can not force anyone to wear a mask!

FFS
