People Concerned About Britney Are Sharing This Post Everywhere And It Might Change The Way You See Her
Britney Spears hasn’t legally been in control of her life and fortune for the past twelve years.
After the singer had several public mental breakdowns in 2008, the court put her estate, financial assets, and some personal assets under the control of her father and a lawyer. It’s what’s called a conservatorship — a form of legal guardianship, typically enacted for those incapable of making their own decisions. Earlier this year, it was extended until August 22nd when the court will once again review Britney’s case.
Since its implementation, the conservatorship has generated a lot of speculation among Spears’ fans. Many of them think she’s being controlled and manipulated, which has fueled the #FreeBritney movement. One of its members recently made a Facebook post that has since gone viral, taking debates about Britney’s well-being even further.

The late 2000s were a difficult time for Britney. She was spotted driving her SUV with her son Sean on her lap and not strapped in a car seat. She shaved her head and was seen hitting a photographer’s car with an umbrella. She also went through a divorce and, after refusing to relinquish custody of her children, locked herself in a room with her child only to be taken out on a stretcher and hospitalized for appearing to be under the influence of an unknown substance. In 2008, Britney made several trips to rehab and was committed to a psychiatric hospital at least two times.
Eventually, her father, Jamie Spears was granted oversight of her estate and health, which includes everything from negotiating business opportunities to restricting visitors, while attorney Andrew Wallet was assigned to help manage the singer’s assets.
Britney Spears’ financial documents revealed that as of 2018, she had a net worth of $59 million. That year, she spent $400,000 on living expenses and $66,000 on household supplies. She also spent $1.1 million on her legal and conservator fees that year, and her father reportedly took $128,000 of that.
Britney’s fans thought a sign that not everything was going well was when attorney Andrew Wallet stepped down as the co-conservator. “Conservatorship is engaged in numerous ongoing business activities requiring immediate attention,” he wrote in court filings, adding that it would be in Britney’s best interest if his resignation were accepted swiftly. He didn’t provide a specific reason for his resignation.
According to Wallet, the singer would have suffered “substantial detriment, irreparable harm, and immediate danger” if he didn’t step down.
Law experts, however, point out that while conservatorships can be corrupted, there is probably good reason it still stands. “The fact that she’s been under conservatorship for a dozen years should tell you something about the state of her mental impairment and her vulnerability,” lawyer Adam Streisand, who specializes in high-profile wealth disputes told Los Angeles Times. “The courts will do everything they can to ensure that a person is not conserved unless they really, really need to be.”

Being thick here. If, for example, someone is sectioned under the UK Mental Health Act, they have a legal right to appeal their detention. If they don't, they are automatically referred to a review tribunal after three years. If someone lacks capacity and decisions need to be made in their "best interests" there are criteria and a process enshrined in law. If someone has what we call Power of Attorney over another persons affairs, it's either because the person has handed them control through free will or lacks capacity. And don't get me onto deprivation of liberty safeguards. My point being that there are legal safeguards in the UK to prevent this sort of thing happening. Either US law is fundamentally flawed or... there's something we don't know.

Everytime she went before a judge he forced her to take a needle full of a sedative so she couldn't speak clearly. Then would provide "witnesses" to her so called behavior. This is pure insanity. How is it possible for this man to get away with treating his daughter like this? When Britney had her meltdown, I kept thinking that the press just needed to leave her alone, but the real person that needs to leave her alone is her father. I have mental health issues myself, but my parents don't try to control my every move. They just watch out for me and make sure that I am taking my medication. Jamie Spears should be ashamed of himself.

Not a Britney "fan" but her behavior struck me as the sort of extreme "cry for help" that was, unfortunately, treated as a joke by the media. She wanted someone to ask her what was wrong, and to get her *out*, and did not know what else to do... B/c her parents were *such* gems treating their kid as an ATM since she was a toddler. Seen this in not-rich-not-famous people. It's amazing what removal from toxic situations and people can do to heal someone... And what happens to people who have guardians for "their own good". It sometimes ends up with a homicide charge. (I'm old. I've seen too damn much. Humanity, basically.) And, as I commented elsewhere, that's a Thorazine stare. She wants to scream, and they're making sure she can't, is how it looks. Poor kid. (Yes, she's a kid. Compared ot me, most are.)

Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys had a crazy doctor controlling him too... (Am I the only one old enough to remember this story?). It was a nightmare for him. Really really awful and abusive! He somehow met a wonderful woman who fought like hell to save him from the clutches of that evil doctor and the 2 married and living happily ever after. True story.... Britney needs a new and improved, in her best interest, good for her, and her little boys doctor and team. This all needs to be about her, not her ability to make money for them. Good Luck Britney.

2 WORDS- Frances Farmer. Her biography about her life, and lobotomy at the hands of her Mother, fascinated the world only a few years ago. Jessica Lange got the Academy Award for her performance. Yet, once again...History repeats itself. No sane Judge, would allow this kind of conservatorship with this kind of money. If it was to protect, then no one other than Britney, and her children should profit. A year check-up of mental health should be assigned. Unbelievable.

Yeah, this post sounds horrible, but we really don't know the full story. I don't know what's worse: "That she's extremely mentally ill and needs her Dad to do this," or "That she isn't mentally ill and her Dad is abusing her in a horrible way." I guess the worst case is if she is extremely mentally ill AND her Dad is doing this just to use and abuse her.

No one is saying she should have full and unauthorised contact with her children though. They have their own father looking after them for 70% of the time and Britney is allowed unsupervised contact for 30% of the time. The courts obviously think that is okay and that the children are okay. It’s being monitored and it sounds like she can’t blink without her father taking note. How much effort is being put into getting Britney well rather than keeping her controlled? Her father's motives do seem very worrying when told as above. Her dad is said to have assaulted one of her children so he sounds pefect to have in charge of someone's life. 🙄 Britney clearly has problems but could her father be behind some of those problems? Her mother has tried to help her get back some control which may be telling. It seems to me that Britney seriously needs a few people on her side who have no conflict of interest.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Almost no adult with schizophrenia has a guardian because it's absolutely unnecessary. Even people who don't take their meds as prescribed don't need to have a guardian.
