Was Mary Austin Freddie Mercury’s wife? The legendary Queen singer’s relationships were always in the media spotlight. However, the one that truly mattered probably received the least attention of them all.
“The only friend I’ve got is Mary, and I don’t want anybody else,” Freddie Mercury once said about the ‘love of his life,’ Mary Austin. But was Freddie Mercury married to Mary? Mary was 19 when she first met Freddie in the early 1970s. She was working as a PR at a hip and trendy fashion shop in Kensington, West London, when she first laid eyes on the “wild-looking artistic musician.” In an interview with the Daily Mail in 2013, she recalled: “He was like no one I had met before. He was very confident – something I have never been. We grew together. I liked him, and it went on from there.”
The pair began dating and formed a bond that would stay with Freddie throughout his life. While their romantic relationship ended as Freddie came to terms with his sexuality, their friendship went from strength to strength. Mary never became Freddie Mercury’s wife, but their bond remained strong.
Mary, in fact, went on to get married and had two children. However, she was there for Freddie when his health began to decline. He left her with much of his fortune after his passing. “If things had been different, you would have been my wife, and this would have been yours anyway,” he wrote in his will.

Why did Freddie Mercury’s wife leave him?
Freddie Mercury and Mary were never married. They did, however, date briefly. Their relationship ended as Freddie came to terms with his sexuality and his need for self-discovery.
Mary Austin and Freddie Mercury’s relationship was unique; he often called her his “common-law wife.”
Despite the end of their romantic involvement, Mercury and Austin continued to share a deep emotional bond and friendship that lasted throughout Mercury’s life. In his will, Freddie Mercury left Mary Austin the majority of his estate, including his home.
Why Did Freddie Love Mary so Much?
Mary was Freddie’s rock and the only source of stability in his tumultuous life.
Freddie, whose real name was Farrokh Bulsara, had a meteoric rise to fame with his music band, Queen. While his life was filled with the chaos and excesses of the rock ‘n’ roll world, Mary Austin’s presence gave him a sense of normalcy amid the whirlwind of fame and fortune.
He dedicated the song “Love of My Life” to her and even proposed to her with a ring in 1973.
Their story is a unique and touching example of how love and friendship can evolve and adapt over time. While their romantic relationship transformed, the profound connection between Freddie Mercury and Mary Austin remained constant.
Was Freddie Mercury Gay?
Freddie’s sexuality was a subject of public speculation due to his flamboyant stage persona and private nature. People often asked the question – was Freddie Mercury gay? He never publically identified as gay. However, in 1991, after his passing, Mercury’s close friend, Jim Hutton, confirmed that he had privately indeed identified as gay.
In his lifetime, Mercury chose not to disclose his sexuality publicly, as there was less societal acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ+ individuals back then. He produced some of the best songs ever and didn’t want any bad press spoiling Queen’s image.
He would always deflect questions about his sexuality. Once, Freddie was asked point blank if he was gay. He replied, “As a daffodil, dear!”
He did, however, confirm publicly that he was battling HIV and helped raise awareness about the issue.
Where’s Mary Austin now?
The Mary Austin-Freddie Mercury love saga came to an end in 1991 after the singer’s passing. Mary is believed to have been at Freddie’s bedside holding his hand when he passed away at the age of 45. She even carried out his dying wish to secretly scatter his ashes. There have been several rumors about where she scattered the ashes. However, she has never revealed the location.
She chose not to marry painter Piers Cameron, with whom she had two children. She married businessman Nick Holford in 1998 but split up in 2002.
So, where’s Mary Austin now? The 72-year-old lives a private life in London. Freddie bequeathed half of his staggering £75 million estate to her. This includes the £25 million mansion in Kensington, where she currently stays.
She recently made the emotional decision to remove tributes to Freddie from the mansion. She also decided to auction Freddie’s 1,400 personal items. Items that went under the hammer included his grand piano, a silver mustache comb, his iconic sunglasses, and hand-written lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody. The auction fetched a whopping $50.4 million.

I think they portrayed him pretty well. Queen was pretty before my time, but I have grown up on their music. I used to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody every night for a year when I was little. I love Freddie, and I love Queen. They were so amazing, and so unafraid to be themselves. I wish everyone else (myself included) had that confidence and that acceptance for all of humanity. Rami embodied all of this. He deserves all the praise in the world <3

It's quite obvious to me, that Mary was meant to always be in his life. She was his heart and soul. It's a rare thing, to find your soul mate on your journey through life. She didnt honour his will the way he wanted her 2, he gave her his house but wanted jim to stay living in it but his grave wasnt even cold before she kicked him out. From documentaries and such the band was quite close to jim also so were appaled at how she spat on his memory, he loved her and she screwed him over after he was dead

Mary seems like she was his real love. ((Love of his life) The song was his own words. I think he gave up on women when that did not work out. The media painted the picture of him one way but when you see their relationship it calls into question if people are really born one way ? Or do they choose an alternative lifestyle because of emotional scars? Very interesting. Just to be clear no judgements. It’s just the circumstance vs genetic makeup is interesting stuff.

This is nice and all. But to say she was his only true love when he had Jim Hutton is a bit mean. Plus I thought Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't entirely honest, thought the same about 'straight out of compton'; if the producers are the people in the film it will not be fair.

Yes I did enjoy Bohemian Rhapsody very much. And Rami Malek did a fantastic job or bring Freddie Mercury back to life. He did an outstanding performance. I am 64 and still love Queen now as I always have.

There are so many problems with this article. He was bisexual if anything, and the title is so much click bait b******t. He was in a long term relationship with a man when he died, and the only reason you aren't seeing quotes to that effect is because a lot of his life was private. It's easy for a man to profess love, even platonic love, for a woman when he's not straight. Not so easy to express any love for men that he very likely had. This man belongs to the queer community and don't you all forget it.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody only recently, Rami was great, but I allow myself as a person who "loved" Freddie and Queen, to say that ONLY Mary was Freddie's "love of life" together with ONLY the music that was part I think Jim Hutton was ONLY a "presence" about him. Freddie was already suffering from AIDS, I didn't and I didn't like him, even he "sold" him in the end... Freddie was NOT gay but bisexual, but then admit it it would have created more problems than anything else... I have NEVER cared (so important for jackal journalists!!) about his sexuality; he was immense, I'm just sorry that he lost him too soon with Queen, he would have enchanted us for a long time to come.

Freddie was gay and he even said that he was never with a woman after Mary. The only supposed relationship he had after Mary was with Barbara Valentin. Barbara was widely known to have wildly exaggerated her relationship with Freddie (he was in a relationship with a man named Winnie Kirchberger ). It's sad how many people are willing to believe complete lies to prop up their fantasies. The other members of Queen knew that Freddie was gay and his roadie Ratty (Peter Hince) knew he was gay. I loved the movie and thought the actors who played the band members were excellent. They really captured the synergy of the Queen creative process. Rami Malek was brilliant. Hey just saying that this article is extremley biased. Mary was not his only true love. Jim, David, etc etc. You left out the part wheremary kicked Jim out of her home when he went to live with her. There are a lot of negative review about the movie because some part of the story are not in accordance with the facts and something about how this movie doesn't really pictured Freddie's sexuality and emotion. But you know critics, they don't seem happy about anything. In the end Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't made for them but for the fan to celebrate his musicand many fans are satisfied.

I will mourn Freddie forever. Rami did a bang-up job playing him, and the band - well, you just didn't stop and think "wow, they're doing a great job!" during the movie. You just experienced QUEEN. Watched the movie again Saturday and again wanted to immediately stream the real LiveAid performance. And can we mention Rami's shoutout to the actress who played Mary in the film? Seems Freddie almost inhabited him for a while. <3

He did an amazing job as Freddie! I loved it! And Mary, needs to never worry about others jealousy from what Freddie left her. Other band members, if one of them had died, would do the same thing, give the majority of worldly possessions, to the most I,portmanteaus person in their lives. For Freddie, it was Mary. Freddie didn’t have to leave them anything at all. So their feelings are misplaced, and it’s very sad they reacted how they did. It’s a strong possibility, if it had been one of them that died, they wouldn’t have left anyone but their family, anything ! For them to expect that, is just wrong and very petty, and greedy. So, if mAry reads this, Mary, don’t worry. You loved and knew Freddie better than anyone in his life. You were part of his soul. Don’t let others petty feeling ruin that for you. The film was brilliant and I think it showed so sensitively how Freddie's sexuality was hard for him to live with and come to terms with....he loved a woman deeply and enduringly but was attracted to men. She didnt honour his will the way he wanted her 2, he gave her his house but wanted jim to stay living in it but his grave wasnt even cold before she kicked him out. From documentaries and such the band was quite close to jim also so were appaled at how she spat on his memory, he loved her and she screwed him over after he was dead

Mary seems like she was his real love. ((Love of his life) The song was his own words. I think he gave up on women when that did not work out. The media painted the picture of him one way but when you see their relationship it calls into question if people are really born one way ? Or do they choose an alternative lifestyle because of emotional scars? Very interesting. Just to be clear no judgements. It’s just the circumstance vs genetic makeup is interesting stuff.

This is nice and all. But to say she was his only true love when he had Jim Hutton is a bit mean. Plus I thought Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't entirely honest, thought the same about 'straight out of compton'; if the producers are the people in the film it will not be fair.

Yes I did enjoy Bohemian Rhapsody very much. And Rami Malek did a fantastic job or bring Freddie Mercury back to life. He did an outstanding performance. I am 64 and still love Queen now as I always have.

I loved the movie and got goosebumps! It made such an impression on me. Freddie Mercury seemed like such a kind and generous person. I thought Rami captured Freddie perfectly!

There are so many problems with this article. He was bisexual if anything, and the title is so much click bait b******t. He was in a long term relationship with a man when he died, and the only reason you aren't seeing quotes to that effect is because a lot of his life was private. It's easy for a man to profess love, even platonic love, for a woman when he's not straight. Not so easy to express any love for men that he very likely had. This man belongs to the queer community and don't you all forget it.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody only recently, Rami was great, but I allow myself as a person who "loved" Freddie and Queen, to say that ONLY Mary was Freddie's "love of life" together with ONLY the music that was part I think Jim Hutton was ONLY a "presence" about him. Freddie was already suffering from AIDS, I didn't and I didn't like him, even he "sold" him in the end... Freddie was NOT gay but bisexual, but then admit it it would have created more problems than anything else... I have NEVER cared (so important for jackal journalists!!) about his sexuality; he was immense, I'm just sorry that he lost him too soon with Queen, he would have enchanted us for a long time to come.

Freddie was not gay he was bisexual Mary was not beard , they were tougher 7 years. For all people who think about hutton(bastardhutton) was love of Freddie's life, is a huge mistake . Even hutton recognized in The Sun Redaction after he wrote that shitybook that he wrote lies and Freddie tolerated him because he blackmailed Freddie. Also he recognized that Freddie didn't have any relationship with him since 1986 when Freddie wanted to change his life ( Reinhold Mack said in interview and wrote article, Freddie told in interview with David Wigg...) Freddie was in love with a girl but in 1986 he found out something about his health.. Sorry for all of you but Freddie wasn't gay. I saw someone wrote that Mary was beard, or she didn't live with him....stop with this

Freddie was gay and he even said that he was never with a woman after Mary. The only supposed relationship he had after Mary was with Barbara Valentin. Barbara was widely known to have wildly exaggerated her relationship with Freddie (he was in a relationship with a man named Winnie Kirchberger ). It's sad how many people are willing to believe complete lies to prop up their fantasies. The other members of Queen knew that Freddie was gay and his roadie Ratty (Peter Hince) knew he was gay. I will never understand how people refuse to believe Freddie was gay even when those who actually knew him when he was alive say he was gay.

I finally saw the movie and I was riveted. Rami did an excellent job portraying Freddie Mercury. Freddie Mercury was a master songwriter and performer. It's heartbreaking that such talent is gone so soon.

I loved the movie and thought the actors who played the band members were excellent. They really captured the synergy of the Queen creative process. Rami Malek was brilliant. I don't understand why the film was panned by critics. Thank you for the article about the love story of Freddie and Mary. You can tell from the photos that they truly were a couple who loved each other very much.

Hey just saying that this article is extremley biased. Mary was not his only true love. Jim, David, etc etc. You left out the part wheremary kicked Jim out of her home when he went to live with her. As for Mary, it’s ridiculous that she thinks that the members of queen just continued with their lives. This is why I hate her. She acts as though she’s the only person who cared about Freddie. She’s rude to fans of Freddie and ignores them. It’s absolute bs that people still like her. It’s ok to have an opinion, but know your facts first.

So tragic...I had no idea. I missed an opportunity TWICE to see QUEEN back in the day, and really regret it. I did not know the story behind the story. They truly were meant to be together...maybe they were in a past life...or in a future one. May his spirit rest in peace.

There are a lot of negative review about the movie because some part of the story are not in accordance with the facts and something about how this movie doesn't really pictured Freddie's sexuality and emotion. But you know critics, they don't seem happy about anything. In the end Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't made for them but for the fan to celebrate his musicand many fans are satisfied.

I will mourn Freddie forever. Rami did a bang-up job playing him, and the band - well, you just didn't stop and think "wow, they're doing a great job!" during the movie. You just experienced QUEEN. Watched the movie again Saturday and again wanted to immediately stream the real LiveAid performance. And can we mention Rami's shoutout to the actress who played Mary in the film? Seems Freddie almost inhabited him for a while. <3

He did an amazing job as Freddie! I loved it! And Mary, needs to never worry about others jealousy from what Freddie left her. Other band members, if one of them had died, would do the same thing, give the majority of worldly possessions, to the most I,portmanteaus person in their lives. For Freddie, it was Mary. Freddie didn’t have to leave them anything at all. So their feelings are misplaced, and it’s very sad they reacted how they did. It’s a strong possibility, if it had been one of them that died, they wouldn’t have left anyone but their family, anything ! For them to expect that, is just wrong and very petty, and greedy. So, if mAry reads this, Mary, don’t worry. You loved and knew Freddie better than anyone in his life. You were part of his soul. Don’t let others petty feeling ruin that for you. I hope Freddie gives them all a good knock on the head for acting like this. Even after all this time !

The comment about if things had been different you would have been my wife is so moving. The film was brilliant and I think it showed so sensitively how Freddie's sexuality was hard for him to live with and come to terms with....he loved a woman deeply and enduringly but was attracted to men. It shows how torn it made him emotionally. I loved the film and Freddie was played incredibly i think

when did it ever state that Freddie thought he was handsome .. he definitely was .. inside and out ... but he would shy back due to his teeth as a young boy and even in the beginning of his career .. then he took on the attitude of just being himself and giving his all ... no matter what ... he loved being dramatic and it made him and his music even more enlightening ... and most everyone that has posted here ... or other places have said he was handsome ... maybe you just lack taste ..
