More Art in the Ordinary.

Still Falling

I was walking along a small, manmade stream here in Takasaki, Japan and came across this interesting pattern that the leaves had formed as they were flowing down it. I was struck by the fact that after having fallen from the trees, the leaves were still, in a sense, “falling” as they flowed down the stream and over its gentle falls. But here, the leaves were so tightly packed that they held each other together even as they hung over some of the falls. The blue comes from the sky being reflected in the shallow water.

Green Tower Behind Autumn Leaves

Autumn here in Takasaki, Japan is quite lovely and I wanted to use this green parking tower as a background for the autumn leaves. I was lucky to find this particular tree at a stage where its black truck and branches were visible through its few, but beautiful red leaves. I slightly over-exposed the image to soften the green of the tower and whiten the sky.

Basket Fall

I really liked the way this trash basket was surrounded and outnumbered by the autumn leaves. At least it was doing its part!

A Web of Tears

Autumn in Takasaki, Japan presents itself in many forms. Here, a horizontal spider web is transformed into a shimmering lattice of rain droplets. The rain was so light, almost like a mist, that it could slowly collect and form the these delicate circles. If the rain had been heavier, the drops would most likely have passed right through the web.

I am an English teacher and photo enthusiast living in Japan. The theme of my work is, "The Art in the Ordinary": The unseen art in the things we see everyday.  All the photos I present were taken within 7 miles from my home in the quiet little city of Takasaki, Japan.  My hope is that after seeing the work and where it was found, people will be inspired to look more deeply within their everyday surroundings and discover what art may be there.

These are all beautiful, kudos on finding a great POV! I must say the tree with the tower is just stunning. Looked like a painting at first glance.

Thank you so much Jen. And you're right about it looking like a painting; many people say the same thing. I'd love to be able to be a painter, but I guess this is about as close as I'm going to get!
