Used to work at an ice cream store part time. We made our waffle cones from scratch and at regular intervals. Not just because of the demand. The strong scent could be smelled from outside the building and draw people in. Also, people were more likely to buy waffle cones or increase their serving size when we were cooking up a fresh batch. Good business strategy. And hey, made my clothes smell nice (I had a jacket that smelled like fresh waffle cones for 3 months after I left that place)

A lot of stores with in-store bakeries pipe the scent of baking out into the store and to the entrances.

Who falls for that? Bakeries used to smell of actual bakery goods when I was a kid. Now most of them don't because they don't bake in house anymore but get their baked goods delivered from a distribution center. The fake smell is always the same and noticably artificial. The real smell was different every day.

Did some drywall work at an Otis Spunkmeyer corporate office, every few hours they would bake a batch of cookies. Smelled so good. Gained about 5 pounds that week.

I read book manuscripts as a trainee. And yes, it makes sense to assign this to the lowest rung employee, because the vast majority of what comes in is so bad it wouldn't even pass as a 6th grade essay assignment. The stuff that is well written and at least somewhat engaging, is passed on to higher decision makers. I literally passed on only 2 manuscripts in 3 months. Out of hundreds.

He probably embezzled because he had a gambling problem or something like it that was causing him to burn through money like crazy. Or another common thread in cases like that is they basically do it on something small planning on it being a one time thing and get like addicted to it and their spending gets more and more extravagant causing them to embezzle more making the budget short fall bigger and more noticable.

at least it was only 4 days - bloat and such will have likely kicked in, and some blood/foam may have leaked from the mouth etc, but otherwise I've seen much worse - cases where a persons body hasn't been found for over a month and that's when you start to liquify. You can only imagine the smell, and the mess. I feel for the cleanup crews after bodies being found like that, sometimes whole walls and floors need to be knocked out and replaced because the decomp liquid just seeps in.

And we did get tons of free stuff all the time and great discounts. They rly did take care of their employees. I wouldn’t feel so bad about the cutting up of unsold inventory if a) they recycled the cloth and b) they produced an entire line of items—-maybe from the recycled materials—-specifically to be donated to homeless shelters. Fat chance, I know, but it would be a really good PR move if they actually followed through with it.

Given that they are one of the brands that require the clothing to be offered to employees at a discount before being thrown, that they ignored that part is something that should be reported as it is against company rules. Here they are sometimes sent to outlets, or the tags removed before donation.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore from many years ago when i worked at mcdonald's: the ice cream machine isn't raggedy and always broken. at some point it has to go into cleaning mode, each day i think, and this takes 4-5 hours. so when they tell you its down or broken, the machine is probably just sanitizing itself. i don't know that the stores can program them to do this at a certain time of day. when people in the drive through ask for their fries to be cooked fresh and they don't mind waiting, a lot of times workers will take food that had already been sitting out, and re-drop it into the grease for like 15 seconds so they come out piping hot & shiny again. (this mostly happens on late/overnight shifts)

McDonald's fries are horrible, soft and soggy, even when they are cooked fresh. Al least in my country. It's frozen potatoes and very low quality, re-heated oil, so they can't taste like the real thing. It's true that restaurants fry the potatoes halfway and finish frying them when you order, but good restaurants use quality products, unlike MacDonald's.

I am jinxed. I used to teach a food safety certification to restaurant managers and somehow restaurants know this and like to play “Guess that food borne illness” with me, it’s like they know. For those who say that independent places do better- there really is no reason to think this. There are crappy chains and good chains. There are crappy independents and good independents. Whether or not people get sick depends on training and the lack thereof, proper managerial oversight of procedures and equipment, etc. And oh, me getting salmonella? A friend's cooking. Me getting E. coli? That was one of those independents. Me getting staph? Independent. Me getting Clostridium perfringens? Buffet line at the Tropicana. Another buffet at the Suncoast, Las Vegas, got 80% of our group sick with a mystery bug, maybe campylobacter, and another independent got 3 of us sick with something similar to that. So - yeah- all over the place.

Thank you! Enterics epidemiologist here. People have been sold this idea that mom and pop is always better when in fact food safety varies on the qualities and culture of the particular location or chain. Same goes for grocery stores, produce distributors, farmer’s markets stands, etc, etc, etc.

Twice I got sick after eating at a Pizzeria Uno in Oakland. (Yes, after the second time, I never went back.) Years later was chatting with a chef whose restaurant had just taken over the space and I told him about it. His response was that he was entirely unsurprised, as it it had taken them *three weeks* to clean the kitchen when they moved in. [shudder]

My wife used to work in back at a very popular restaurant chain. She told me about what went on back there. Nearly everyday two of the workers got into a fist fight. Right on top of the food. So it got sweat, spit, blood, & snot on it. If it landed on the floor, it was scooped up, & made nice looking back on the plate. It was then served without anybody knowing any better.

Teachers are not paid enough. They should not spend their own money on school supplies or anything else. That encourages the bureaucracy to skimp even more. If every teacher at a school refused to spend even one penny of their own money on supplies. Things would change fast once kids and parents started complaining. I also don't think children should be going door to door soliciting for donations for anything school-related. Parents have their own school expenses to deal with and non-parents shouldn't have to support other's. That's what school taxes are for.

Our older public schools in NEPA are so badly maintained it's surprising the kids & staff have not had major health issues. The Scranton School District had school board people arrested for not fixing the problems within a certain time period. Mold, asbestos, & lead are still a serious issue.

Yeah we sent out kids to a charter school for a couple years only to find out when one needed help that they didn't have the resources to help him even a little, they used the excuse that schools don't do that until 2nd grade. We switched to the state school less than a mile away and they gave him all kinds of help.

Also public schools the teachers are typically part of a teacher's union while charter schools never have union teachers as a way for anti union politicians to hurt the teachers union because as you know teachers are greedy and way overpaid, jk

Yet another reason why tipping is terrible. Yes I know what they did is illegal but anyone in a job like that isn't in the best position to get people to give a s**t and I did tell her to report it but she was an adult at that point and I think chose to quit instead and never reported it.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore From the bookstore: We tear covers off magazines and paperback books in order to get money for them and then chuck the books in the recycling bin, coverless. Books that don't sell in 90 days are returned and the store will likely never sell it again unless it is special ordered. The system is designed to churn out best sellers and classics and nothing more. Speaking of bestsellers, authors can just buy themselves onto the bestseller list and get their book on a front shelf with prime real estate. This usually costs about $250,000 although you can pay more if you want it to be #1. It is why books that are just printed will have a sticker or designed with a cover that says #1 bestseller. They knew it would be a #1 bestseller because they paid for it. Publishers can also pay to have their books put on the various tables in the store.

Stripped books are recycled - they won't be accepted by recycling companies if they have covers because the binding of mass market paperbacks (the only books that are stripped) cannot be recycled.

    Joe Reaves

That may be true (I work in a second hand books store and we had a recycler who just paid by weight for books) but it's done because the retailer has to send the covers to the publisher to prove they were unsold . It would be far too bulky (and expensive) to send the entire books back and the publisher doesn't want boxes of unsold product. If you see a book stripped of its cover being sold the publisher (and author and everyone else involved) isn't getting any money from that.

Used to be a disclaimer in some books: "If you purchased this book without a cover this book has been reported destroyed and the publisher/author has not received any money for it". A lot of older books have this on the inside cover, and you can still find (coverless) in thrift stores occasionally.

yeah I worked at a department store about 30 years ago and we did this with the books/magazines. The covers were sent back to the publisher, and the books themselves went into the recycling compactor. We rarely ordered books, they were mostly just sent to us in bulk automatically.

They were all sale or return items that had the front page torn off. I would never have known about Mad Comic and other American spooky, weird and wonderful, sci-fi comics. The town I grew up in actually has a small, successful place food shack type place, that is staffed primarily by high school kids, with some young college kids to help when the high school kids are at school and the place is open. However, the workers tend to like working there, even though the only interior is the kitchen, which is a tiny shack-like structure, and bathrooms, with the rest of it being open air. It also always gets A ratings on health code inspections. They have good food too.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore So as someone who works/worked in a tax law firm in the holy grail country of bureaucracy (Germany), I can gladly tell you: Many rich people/companies are just rich bc they can afford us to twist the numbers just the right way (aka. we might be helping certain people to commit tax evasion/fraud). We also had a car dealer, who pulled so many black market deals and other illegal stuff and we still had to fake his numbers/books against our morals (so the Finanzamt wouldn't find out)... The sad thing is many smaller companies had to quit during Covid (or even afterwards and before that) just bc they couldn't afford someone who knew the in-and-outs of our bureaucratic system (aka. how to file for financial aid from the state), while the bigger ones used those aids to do ~~not so necessary~~ renovations (which they could file as "expenses")... It's a really s****y system (the bureaucracy stuff in every aspect of the country) and those on top will always benefit from it or know the loopholes, while the more unfortunate ones aren't able to help themselves...

If it's within the tax code it's legal. If they were operating outside the code and obfuscating it, then it's illegal and unethical. If they were doing it at the behest of the client, it then becomes conspiracy to commit fraud.

Oftentimes even “within the code” isn’t ethical…just think back to Romney (“I got binders full of women”) who, along with a lot of lawmakers, made and tailored many of those laws which help the plutocrats. Not that all democrat lawmakers are immune, but at least they try to be more “gasp—socialist!” Much of what they get away with…yes…used to be illegal until the Fat Cats got together and manipulated the rules enough #whyimaliberal

There's a difference between a legal loophole and straight up fraud. Based on this description "helping certain people to commit tax evasion/fraud" this is illegal. It's not a bureaucratic loophole. Stop helping people break the law. You're just as culpable as they are in this case.

Where I am, teachers are mandated reporters. Means that if we suspect abuse/neglect, we are legally (not just morally) obligated to call Child Protective Services. Had a principal that insisted we report to him and then he would make a judgment call as to whether or not to call CPS. Uh, no. I am not risking my license and a child's well being because you want to buddy up to their a-hole parent

My old boss who we will call Maryellen was only 27 when she started at ACME. She quickly rose in the ranks and by 30 was the HBIC. She had made the company millions, they trusted her implicitly. ACME gave Maryellen a company credit card to pay for various expenses, as well as a stipend to do things for the employees such as a cake for birthday months, company cookouts, employee outings to team build, etc… none of which ever happened. Maryellen would take the stipend and go to a Costco and load up on bread, meat, Mayo, chips, drinks, and make brown bag lunches…..which she would then sell to employees for $5 a bag. You could also buy extra chips or drinks for $2/each. She did this every single week, for almost 15 years. They never caught on, or if they did, they turned the other cheek. She then left the company, moved across the country, retired before 50, and now lives in a mansion, travels the world, and has three luxury vehicles.

Tbf, she put in a lot of work for those lunches. Shopping, preparing and packaging. Corporate probably knew and didn’t care. As long as she was productive and making them money, it was probably a drop in the bucket anyway.

As I understand it, she was given a stipend to buy treats for staff. She bought food items with company money money and then sold them to the staff.

I can almost guarantee it was not SUPPOSED to be like that - in all liklihood, that's simply the level of standard that the one particular store you worked with "rose to." (Meaning: they didnt rise to the proper occasion). After working in US service industries for years, I can confidently say that nothing THAT neglectful would be condoned by anyone officially working at a local and state food-safety level, who's regular examinations are designed to ferret just that sort of problem, out. And, milk is one of the hardest scents to get out if spilled, and even the best run places I've been in were troubled by a lingering scent in their cold areas. Unless one is constantly, every hour, cleaning with hot water and soap (but it's hard to maintain the safe refridgeration levels that way), between maintaining current stock and handling it safely and having employees deep clean during non-buisness hours, sometimes an odor is simply a sign of the regularity of that product being used.

Had a very popular co-worker who complained all the time about his soon to be ex-wife doing things behind his back. He would not shut up about this affair she had when she was still in training elsewhere. He painted a very rotten picture of his wife yet none of us ever met her. Then one day I ran into somebody I knew back in my training days. I was the shoulder she cried on about her husband cheating on her starting from the day they got married. OMG, this is the evil wife this guy is talking about. She was a wonderful Kentucky country girl. We hung out & never did anything. It hit me. I was that other guy the husband hated so much. So one night at work he was on a roll about his wife. I then confronted him & said he was the "slur" not her. I know this b/c we were just friends & he was problem, not her. Nobody would even look at him after that. After that, he was very open about his promiscuity & downright vulgar attitudes towards women in general.

Dropped a poussin from a serving platter, put it in the bin and asked Ian the chef to hold the order whilst I got another from the cold store. He looked at me like I was something nasty stuck to the bottom of his shoe, picked (plucked!) the dropped poussin out of the bin, gave it a wipe, stuck it under the grill to heat it back up, plonked it back on the serving platter and left me to present it to the diner.

When I was young I worked for 2 weeks at a branch of Burger King, franchised, that no longer exists. They redated food at arrival and on a regular shedule so that nothing ever went out of date. They even labeled food that was cooked to make it look within it's non- dangerous to eat' zone. There was one guy guy with a crouch infection who kept scratching his crouch. I saw one of the managers plucking burgers out of the bin, brushing the c**p off them, and putting them back in the meat hopper.(Yeah! In thant kind of sh@thole the problem always starts at the top!) One day I saw a pregnant lady and an old lady turn up at the counter together... and i regret to this day that i just walked out... rather than secretly working with Trading Standards' to shut them down. I got out of the insurance game in 2019; I couldn’t make a living being honest. I am only cash now. It is the insurance companies that are to blame since only catastrophic claims pay the best so every case has to be a ‘near death’ experience or the DC won’t get much compensation.

All of the fancy glamping tents at Terramor Outdoor Resort in Bar Harbor, ME are going to fall apart soon. The timber frame tents don't have foundations or pads to sit on, instead each piling is sitting on top of a foam block buried just under the surface. This means that they could declare them temporary structures and cut a bunch of corners to get around plumbing/electrical codes. The foam blocks compress over time and the pilings will start to shift. Some of the tents were already shifting badly when I left in the summer of 2021, not even one year after the resort had opened. But the owners, KOA, don't really care. They're already planning bigger Terramor resorts in a few other states and will likely just abandon the prototype property when it gets too expensive to maintain. Give me 10 more days to start my next job and I'll come back and spill all the tea about Alyeska Ski Resort.

However - the temps with feet too big for standard issue shoes were all issued protective coverings for their own boots - but some IDIOT manager was trying to save money by RATIONING them instead of stopping the employees from working when they didn't have enough! They were all stomping around with their feet half in torn up blue bags. I did leave this job and did an exit letter to tell them about the problem with the contamination. 30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore I ran a daycare for a church (more like a cult) for a few years. The building’s roof was ripped off in a hurricane and the building was flooded. Behind my back, the church leaders went to a smaller church and arranged our center to be housed there until the building was back up and running. They didn’t tell me that we were uninsured and running outside of state licensing. AND they were insisting parents pay cash to avoid a paper trail. They were also claiming interruption of business on the insurance, and paying the employees cash as well. It ended up being my responsibility to write receipts (and sign them), so if anything did come out, it would all fall on me. To sum it up, these people were committing fraud, insurance fraud, and going against the states child care policies, as well as having other people’s children under our care with no insurance. I cut my losses and quit with no two weeks notice, and I’m waiting to hear about the fall out that will inevitably happen. They just got their new building up and running after 2 years of operating this way.

Ya know how the dealership will discount your trade by like $500-1000 if it’s been smoked in? We had a $200 machine that gets the smoke smell completely out of the car. Takes about an hour, but only 5 minutes or so of labor (then leaving it run in the car for the hour). Other than a small amount of electricity, and the initial $200 cost for the machine, it costs the dealer nothing to make it a nonsmoking car.

Ozone machine I expect - gets rid of nicotine and hydrocarbons absorbed into the fabric. Doesn't do a thing for stains and some surfaces, are toxic as heck, and not approved for enclosed spaces. It could still result in asthma from the surfaces that it couldn't penetrate, so by labelling it as non-smoking (which is misadvertising), the company is at a huge liability/getting the company shut down/getting everyone who knows thrown directly into the slammer risk if they try this very much illegal stunt.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore Passwords are all the same still and I haven't worked there in almost 8years. I can still log into everything. Fidelity title, mrmls, the managing website they still use, the website where all Of their contacts are. All of it. Best part is if they ever change a password, they just put the numbers in front instead of at the back. Fidelity title is f*****g sick to still have access too. I can look up a property, see how many owners it's had, when it sold, who the current owner is now and I can see what other properties they own, if they own multiple. Not good to let people still have access too. Mrmls is nice too. if the mrmls ever found out that the acc is being shared that person would have their brokers license revoked. Then there is the zip forms acc I can still log into. This so the most useful. I have direct access to the actual forms used for real estate. It's f*****g wonderful. I've written up several lease agreements for friends and myself. It's so nice having that direct access. F****n real estate world. Loose as a goose and more money than most other professions. They are just lucky I'm not evil. I could edit their contracts to have my bank info to be used and they wouldn't even know until the money is sent to me lol.

You can get a friend, have them buy a property, alter the contracts the night before they go into sign with terms that are extremely favorable to your friend. Once they get their signed and notarized copy, switch the contract back. Now you and a friend own a property where if you fail to make payments, the title company will cover it for you. /jk

Property records are public unless a law enforcement officer files for an exemption. I’m in the US, not sure where this person is from. You can just Google *insert county* public records and get all of that info. Fidelity just charges a fee to do it for you because it can be time consuming.

real estate IT is one the least secure IT setups. Realtors cannot be expected to handle things like 2 factor auth.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore I worked in tech sales, and everyone was sleazy. We were a big company and a competitor with Google, Facebook, etc. primarily sold to small business owners. It didn’t matter what you did, how you did it, or who you screwed, as long as you got them to put down their cc. People who were successful there took advantage of anyone, and everyone. Once in training I watched somebody sell almost 10k in commissions by convincing an hourly employee to put down his own personal cc, and then tell him that the business owner would praise him for his ambition to help the business grow. I obviously didn’t last, because I couldn’t do it, but nonetheless I saw some pretty nasty behavior. Also everyone was doing drugs in the bathroom between calls, with literally not a care in the world.

When I worked at Holiday Inn Express, our entire reservation database got hacked. Like the whole database for all Holiday Inn Expresses was being held for a ransom. This went on for almost a whole week. We had to revert back to paper logs. They had access to credit card info, guest info, everything. They initially ended up deleting a huge portion of guests info and reservations. That week was hell. The funny part was, the password that was used to secure the database was P@ssword!. Wild.

Actually that's an incredibly secure password. A 12 character password containing at least one uppercase character, one number and one symbol would take 34,000 years to brute force using the highest performing tech of today. Increasing the same standard to 14 characters, would take 200 million years. Up it to 17 characters, it's 380 billion years.

Computer security is often a joke. Even the federal government can't keep hackers out of their systems.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore Used to be an insurance adjuster years ago.. Usually the goal was to settle for 3x the medical bills. So whatever your medical bills are, likely you’re looking at 3x that for pain and suffering unless you’re a woman or child with visible scarring. Those get more. Attorneys never meant much more, they were all very friendly to us and played the game (so never assume just getting that attorney will mean a higher settlement). I didn’t love that job and paid generous settlements on most of my claims until I could get outta there! Lol

Life insurance agent was forging signatures and attempted to reinstate policies on dead people... three times. Those were awkward calls. Couldn't fire him though because he'd racked up so much debt to the company that firing him would tank the entire agency he worked with.

A married coworker was having an affair with our boss at an old warehouse that I used to work at. Every hour during lunch break I'd notice this female coworker go sneaking into our male bosses office. He put black construction paper over the window so that nobody could see in. One day I went in to his office to ask him something and walked in on them having relations. I also once worked as a secretary for a CEO who had issues. I only knew because I had to remind him every day of his appointments. Bob, don't forget you have anger management @2pm and sex addicts anonymous @3:30.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore Used to work for a large corporate company. There was a department supervisor who was in her mid-50s who was married to another department’s manager who was in his late-20s. There were rumors going around that the husband was getting sexual with one of his employees, it was kind of well-known by everyone and I think the wife had suspicions. So on his 30th birthday, the husband thought the wife was still away on a business trip so he invited his girlfriend/employee over. The wife shows up unexpectedly during sexy times and the husband freaks out and makes the other woman hide in a closet. The wife is going batshit crazy looking for the woman in her house shouting things like, “WHERE IS SHE? I KNOW SHE’S HERE!” The husband’s denying everything. The wife finally gets to the bedroom, then goes to open the closet door, and sees the naked woman. The wife asks her, “What the hell are you doing here?” And the other woman responds, “I’m his birthday present, you old b***h!”

This isn't funny at all, it's someone's marriage. And the "you old b****" comment? Young girl, you will grow old too and will maybe then be hoping a 20-something doesn't sleep w your husband just because she can.

30 People Share Crazy Secrets From Their Workplaces Now That They Don't Work There Anymore Apparently one of my former employers didn't pay their taxes one year and it took them about 3 more years to resolve it. We were delisted from public stock exchanges for a time and that. The CEO was replaced. It was not a big secret if you just looked at records. But, a lot of people working there didn't know anything about it. Another employer of mine flat out plagiarized other companies' materials and then resold them. I quit as soon as I figured that one out.

Where I was working the divorced director was hooking up with the married assistant director. The director was being verbally sexually inappropriate with the teachers. One day he put his hands a bit to low on a teacher who finally had enough and reported him. Once she reported him a bunch of other teachers followed. because he had already been warned about his behavior and made to apologize publicly he was fired for it. The assistant director then became principal (was given her own assistant) was then mad at everyone for him not being there and she was a tyrant who treated the teachers so bad she made half of them quit because they just couldn’t do her threats anymore. She ended up falsifying legal documents, embezzling thousands out of the centers credit cards, she stole all the big fancy equipment the place had just bought and blamed it on an office worker who ended up getting fired for it, before it was proved it wasn’t her. She left the center in such a way that legally it shouldn’t have been opened. She was then fired but because the previous director had just been fired less than a year ago they let her get away with everything because they couldn’t do the bad press. Her then assistant became director in a daycare where they didn’t have even half the teachers they needed to keep it open. They tried to force some of the teachers to assume the role of teachers with an assistants pay when they refused those teachers got fired. She was last I heard lashing out at everyone because the director before her neglected to do most of the legal paperwork. Licensing had them under investigation. They had two lawsuits going on. Parents where super unhappy with the care of the place. Last I heard they still had a huge lawsuit in their hands they were trying to pay off. And they were waiting for that to happen to rebrand the place with a new name. From the last coworker I have that still works there I know that they are still short staffed and the last few teachers there are already looking to get out. There was also tons of cheating going on between teachers, parents and therapist when I was there. And that’s just part of the drama I got to witness while working there.

I (in mgmt) accidentally caught my boss stealing from a fast food restaurant. The person was ringing up sales and applying coupons for weeks, except there were no coupons active at the time. I happened to notice it on a report and mentioned it to the district mgr. Woops, sorry thief, it didn't dawn on me what was happening. Thankfully I wasn't working all of the days this was going down so I wasn't suspected.

Banks make most their money on how much they can tell the government they have on hand via fractional reserve lending. Thus many banks will be slow to clear checks out of your account but fast to authorize transfers in to them. They are trying to maintain what they call the "float" or "Floating Balance" on the banks overall books.

'Watering down' whisky means cutting expensive stuff with cheap stuff, not actually cutting it down with water. It is quite hard to detect and prove... and MUCH MUCH EASIER than making your own f'kin distillery and bottling process! What a numpty!!
