People Are Joining This Thread Ranting About Overhyped Foods They Don’t Understand And Here Are 34 Of Them
It is probably impossible to find a food that everyone loves, there will always be someone who hates it with all their heart. Even the most common things that a lot of recipes may contain. It is interesting how different people can eat the same thing, but have a different reaction to the taste or even perceive it differently.
Even though the Latin maxim says that there is no point in disputing tastes, people love to give their opinions on food. Reddit user jamboamericano wanted to know people’s opinions on foods that are hyped up but “quite simply suck.” They received 3k responses so take a look at the most popular ones that quite a lot of people agreed on.

I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why?
That, and tofu.
Instagram food (so foods with so much added nonsense just for the sake of a photo, not for taste)
Caviar
I feel like whoever buys that s**t doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money
This is just silly. There are types of caviar that aren't expensive, particularly because you're not meant to shovel it in with a fork. I absolutely love caviar, and it has nothing to do with showing off or being rich (I'm not).
Vegan cheese
I like all kinds of cheeses, I have tried vegan cheese out of curiosity. They have not got it yet. Close, but in a disgusting way.
Close?! It tastes like coconut soap and the ghost of a Victorian child
Load More Replies...Am I the only person here who's ever had a decent vegan cheese? I'm not vegan, but I like to try different foods and I'm not going to let one bad brand deter me from trying something new. I think a lot of you are also bashing something because you think it's just for vegans, when people like my sister have legitimate dairy allergies.
I tried around 20 different vegan cheeses. I really want to like them, but they all taste like the cheapest mass-produced factory cheese from the discounter you can get... (The cream cheese version is okay though.)
Load More Replies...I'm sorry. If it's vegan it's not cheese. Cheese-ish maybe but not cheese.
I don’t get people who trash vegan cheese as edible plastic but have no qualms about eating American singles, Kraft Mac and cheese, Cheese Whiz, Velveeta and other highly processed “cheese” products, just because they’re used to them. That stuff makes me gag harder than vegan cheese.
You are allergic to dairy, you just aren’t a baby cow!🤷🏻♀️
Load More Replies...Vegan here. It depends on the brand. Some brands available in supermarkets are edible plastic. Some are acceptable. If you want heaven on a plate, cough up and buy cashew nut-based cheeses from specialised shops/websites. For instance the Bree from the Greenbay website is worth putting on weight for...!
For my kid, who can't have dairy but would very much want to, it is a good option that he likes, although not all of the brands.
They must be trying to wrong brands, vegan cheese is gorgeous nowadays. And doesn't make you feel yucky afterwards!
Vegan meat, too. I dont hate vegans you eat whatever you want but I just dont understand meat that isnt meat. People say it tastes the same but I'm a little scared to try
Most of them use palm oil and on top of being hella unhealthy and destroying the environment, it leaves this nasty tasting greasy film on the top of your palate. That being said, I've tasted some great vegan cheese sauces, because with more liquid form canola and (g)rape seed oil actually can be used. So if you're vegan - go for squeezable cheese
Seriously. I also have a kid who’s allergic to cashews and pistachios, so I wish they’d just call this stuff “nut mush”, cause that’s what it is
Vegan cheese is not made from actual nuts. Coconut maybe but mostly soybean curd.
Load More Replies...I haven't got a choice, allergic to dairy, I miss real cheese so much, and yoghurt...one day they will get it right. But for now it's really not that great
I don'r understand vegans, if you want a cheese product eat cheese.Same goes for meat.
Animal rights activist here. Have only had one vegan cheese I liked (a camembert-style cheese made from cashews). The rest: yuck. Often just the texture on my tongue is enough to make me gag. So now I just skip the cheese in recipes or sub in a suitable alternative. It's fine.
As a vegan, some are gross but some are really really good!! Regardless no cruelty involved!❤️
People hate in vegan cheese, and some if it isn't great... but when you have serious allergies it's a better choice than not having cheese at all!
My wife has a allergy to dairy. Not lactose intolerant. But full blown EpiPen allergy. We use vegan cheese when we make dishes that require or are better with cheese. It's enough to make my wife happy and I am happy to cook with it for her.
I don't understand vegan fake anything. If you're opposed to eating meat, eggs, fish or dairy, then why do you have to have fake versions of those foods?
Cause we do like the taste, just not the animal exploitation that comes with it. (I know this will get downvoted, but you asked, so I thought I'd answer your question)
Load More Replies...I've tried a LOT of vegan cheeses and every single one tastes like the package they come in.
I'm a vegan and I agree wholeheartedly. They just haven't managed to get it right yet.
This stuff WILL NOT melt!!!! I had to change my diet under doctors orders due to severe GI issues and vegan cheese was on the list.
Some melt beautifully. Especially vegan mozzarella.
Load More Replies...Vegan cheese saved my daughters meal times. She has so many food allergies and her "reactions Vertogo. Wheat, gluten, corn, soy, sesame, dairy, strawberry and under ripe fruit. To see her enjoy dairy again is immeasurable
I feel like cheese is specifically a milk based product, therefore making it a vegan product doesn't really work, it's just something that doesn't seem like it will ever turn out with the same quality as cheese if it isn't. I like a lot of plant based foods but so far the cheeses I've had just don't taste quite the same
im aware this option exists, however, real cheese is delicious and some cheeses are worth paying the price
I tried a blue cheese made of cashews the other day. It was actually surprisingly good!
I've had some that aren't bad but definitely didn't taste like cheese. Daisy shredded cheese is waaaaay better melted but I've acquired a taste for it as is in my salads
I tried so many, sometimes I like some. But its not a substitute, more like a indefine bonus food.
I'll take vegan cheese over American "cheese" any day of the week and I've never had vegan cheese.
My niece loves cheese - well, many years ago. She would die if she had ANY milk products. When they started with the fake stuff, it was terrible, but she ate it. The newer stuff is great - to her...and it fills a void. I'm sure it works well for others who are lactose intolerant or with allergies. We don't eat the stuff
I love meat and dairy. But we must stop eating them to save the world. The more effort they put into making fake cheese and dairy, the better they will get.
Humans are omnivores. Stopping humans from eating meat won't "save the world". We have to work on actively undoing the damage we do to the world to save it. We won't save the world just by stopping a few behaviors.
Load More Replies...I have a friend who is lactose intolerant on top of having a number of allergies to different foods. They eat a lot of vegan products, however, they swear that mass-produced vegan cheese is one of the nastiest things due to the odd texture and taste. I am sure that there are likely some lovely artisan vegan cheeses that taste really good.
If you are vegan why would you want food to emulate the food you choose not to eat. Why not be inventive, recipes that actually suit the ingredients you want to eat. That stuff in the picture looks processed and plastic.
I'm allergic to cow's milk protein and have tried SO MANY vegan cheeses, all disgusting!
I could never understand why vegans and vegetarians needed "fake" omnivore food anyway. Tofurky? Plant dogs? Soysage? Meat or meat not, why pretend with all of the fake flavoring and coloring involved?
Just because vegans don’t want to eat animal products doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy the flavor.
Load More Replies...Vegan anything, but just my opinion. I'm a vegetarian- no fish, meat, etc. I've never had a lack of delicious things to eat.
Soooo... vegetables, fruits and legumes are now not vegan anymore?
Load More Replies...Thank god. Do some research on the dairy industry why don't you.
Load More Replies...Vegan anything that pretends to be the real thing. Like Vegan sausage that says it tastes like chicken. F**k them
I'm not in the habit of eating either grass or plastic but my vegan cheeses are quite tasty, especially the feta.
Load More Replies...Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.
Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.
Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still
Liver. Just......no.
As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well
Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.
If it's prepared and cooked properly, Kale is delicious. Especially Scottish black kale. My family loves it and it's full of nutrients like iron and vitamins.
Lobster. I uh, I don't get it. It always tastes a bit flavorless and just alright to me. Then I see people dip it in butter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the f**k is the point of this $30 dish exactly?
Like a lot of shellfish, it has to be fresh from the ocean. If you have it in a tank at the supermarket where they just sit there it's not worth it. Back on PEI, Canada; 70% of houses are having fresh lobster on Mother's Day right off the boat. Can't beat it.
This will not be popular…Taco Bell.
Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.
Or if you’re drunk, the bar closed, and there’s no other place open.
Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.
Pop tarts
Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleeda**. whatever that means
Hot Flamin' Cheetos is my guilty pleasure. My butt does not thank me the next day, though
Truffle oil
The majority of truffle oil isn't actually made with truffles. The main ingredient is a chemical designed in a laboratory to mimic the aroma of truffles (synthetic 2,4-dithiapentane).
Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.
Ranch dressing. It’s vile. People put it on EVERYTHING. gross. Just stop it.
When it was first introduced, it was a packet mix that you combined with mayonnaise and real buttermilk. It was delicious then. You can still buy the mix and that's the only way to prepare it IMHO.
Olives
Kimchi, it just doesn't taste as interesting as people say it does
Shrimp, and any other sea-roaches
Shrimp is pretty cool if it's cooked well. Not overcooked and not drenched in seasoning. With most of these you just got to cook it lightly with minimal additions to keep the true taste.
Seafood. It stinks, it looks gross, and every time I've been convinced to try it it's been rank. My husband and I have agreed many times that we'd have to be starving to death before we ever considered seafood as a meal. I do not understand how anybody can enjoy it. It creates a visceral negative reaction in me.
I love seafood, but I'm careful where I source it. No dodgy diner seafood, please.
Food: Sweet potato
Drink: Kombucha
I can't understand the enjoyment of either, as both taste like dirt
I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished.
I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the f*****g kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers.
But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.
Reading these posts makes me think these are a lot of pizza, burgers, and fries fans. It is interesting to branch out and try other foods. I don't know why some of these foods are considered to be "hyped". Who hypes tofu????
I think some are conflating over hyped with simply being well known. To me, over hyped is akin to saying it's the best and nothing will compare to it.
Load More Replies...Seems like people love hating on some of the healthiest foods you can eat. They might not all taste great, but your body will certainly thank you in the long run.
I think a lot of healthy foods can taste great if you learn how to prepare them well and the way you like best!
Load More Replies...This thread makes no sense! Someone likes some type of food, some don't.
I would say the most overhyped things I've tasted were some of the major food chain meals, didn't live up to the hype. There were some others but those are local to the region and might not be so common elsewhere....but none lived up to the hype.
Are people f*****g serious? They are downvoting the people who say they hate pickles or mushrooms just because they do? People seem to forget that too many downvotes gets a person BANNED and shouldn’t be used to express dislike for someone’s opinion. Unless the person is going out of their damn way to be frigging rude, trolling, or spamming don’t downvote someone! SMH
PLEASE DO NOT DOWN VOTE an opinion you disagree with, it can and will get the poster banned. BP FIX YOUR SYSTEM
I will downvote a post or opinion I don't like or disagree with, if there is something bugging me. But I barely downvote stuff, mostly upvote or ignore. I did downvote this comment I am replying to for example.
Load More Replies...This one is genetic. If you don't have the gene, cilantro tastes like soap. If you do have it, it's lovely and herbaceous.
Load More Replies...Kombucha tastes like toes dropped in battery acid yet it's all the rage.
Why isn't foie gras on the list? Apart from the vile treatment of geese it also tastes really bad. I tried it once many years ago and had to discreetly spit it out in my napkin.
What, steatitis on toast just doesn't do it for you?
Load More Replies...This just in: Food preferences are highly individual and everyone has different likes and dislikes. Shocking.
I think people just like to share their opinions, and then other people like to jump in to express how strongly they agree or disagree haha
Load More Replies...Mine would be hot dogs, but I have a good reason. When I was little I loved them, but one time I got the flu and spent all night puking them up. Now (25+ years later) my brain has those cross-linked so badly even the smell of hot dogs cooking makes me nauseous. Most types of sausage are also guilty by association for me.
For me, the same happened with mashed potatoes. I slowly get to be able to eat (or even enjoy) it, but only if it's made in a bery specific way and from scratch. I think I'll never be able to eat the powdered one from the box (that I used to eat as I child before the flu) again.
Load More Replies...Blackberries can kill. I’m trying to be lighthearted about this but my dad fell whilst picking blackberries today. We didn’t find him until it was too late. Bye dad. 14.03.37 - 05.08.22
Omg, are you saying you lost your dad, today, just like that? I'm so sorry to read this, conincidentally this was my father's death anniversary too. My heartfelt condolences to you.
Load More Replies...Hmmm, it's not a difficult thought to grasp - people like different foods. Not everyone likes the same thing. What's 'great' for one person is 'taste like soap' to another. This doesn't mean the item has been overhyped, it just means you don't like it much. That's fine. Move on and eat the foods you love.
For me it’s mustard, I literally cannot stand the taste. And I don’t get how people can enjoy banana and avocado, so slimy and mushy, ugh. but, to each their own 🤷♀️
I get why people are hating on the overly processed foods, like Nutella, poptarts, etc... but sometimes the sh!tty food is what hits the spot
Oh. And nut milk. How did this one get left off? I'm not saying that it's all bad. I rather enjoy some of it.... BUT. But, but, but.... IT'S NOT MILK. It's nut juice. You're drinking nut juice. Who's with me?
What's the problem with drinking nut juice? Hardly a new development.
Load More Replies...How did mayo not make this list? I know folks love it but those of us that don't, REALLY DON'T.
Noooooooooooooo 😫. Maybe it's my national bias but chips are just sad potato sticks without mayo
Load More Replies...For me, alcohol. People don't believe me when I say I don't like it. I don't dislike it because it's bad for you. I dislike it because they all taste terrible to me.
Most of them aren't even hyped, but discarding a food as being overrated without even trying it seems like an irrelevant opinion, I get not wanting to try something because you're repelled by the way it looks/feels but you can't call it overrated. Most of these are foods enjoyed by certain groups or are an acquired taste.
So many of these are foods I love but can't eat anymore because of allergies :( I should really stop reading posts like this because it makes me miss them even more!
I developed a shrimp allergy seemingly overnight. Now that I can't eat them and won't make them because I can't eat them, my husband has them every chance he gets when we go out to eat. F*****g bastard.

I had him try mine, and now, its one of his vegetables I make and he can't get enough of them. So, just know what your doing can go a long way!
Broccoli. The taste is awful, but the texture! Makes me want to vomit!
I agree with all those items except sweet potato. However I hate the orange one, that overseas seems to be the only one. The red variety (kumara) only.
