I saw Fjaðrárgljúfur for the first time during a November landscape photo trip. It made such an impression on me that I decided to visit it again in winter. The place after heavy snowfall turned out to be almost unrecognizable!
To get to the viewpoints I walked for about 20 minutes from the parking area. The sound of the creaking snow, the humming wind and the all-encompassing whiteness all around… Priceless moments in winter wonderland!
A few years ago the canyon was a quiet place. Not many people knew about its existence. Everything changed when Justin Bieber decided to shoot a fragment of his music video “I’ll Show You” there.
The video was extremely popular (now over 445 million views on YouTube) and people from all over the world began to visit this charming place and, in consequence, destroy the delicate Icelandic flora. Because of the so-called “Bieber Fever” Fjaðrárgljúfur was closed for tourists from March to June (2019) so the nature could regenerate itself.
Fjaðrárgljúfur is absolutely stunning but it gave me mixed feelings. Wonderful nature confronted with total commercialism. Specific routes, platforms
and viewpoints telling me where I should stand and what I should look at. All of this to protect Fjaðrárgljúfur from ourselves.
