Misogyny, the term used to describe societal inequity, is evidenced by many everyday things, like the gendered wage gap, pink tax, lack of women in positions of power, and the unmistakable influence of patriarchy penetrating every level of our lives, from households to politics. Whether you’re being mansplained to or fall victim to the career-destroying prerogatives of men, it means that sadly, you’re no stranger to the ways misogynistic society operates.

But luckily there are many bright women and men out there who are not willing to put up with the sexist BS they witness or experience firsthand day to day. And out of the frustration, hilarious, spot-on, merciless, and witty comebacks are born to target any misogynistic remark.

Scroll down to read through the most entertaining comebacks below that will remind us we don’t have to stay silent when someone is being a jerk.

    Some Words From Maisie Williams

    CheesyChips Report

Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal or male-dominated societies and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. But thankfully, in present times, it’s not being taken lightly anymore as more and more women and men are willing to step up and challenge this ancient and inherently harmful belief.

But although the term has been all over the media in the past 5 years, its real meaning is still widely confused. Kate Manne, a Cornell philosophy professor and the author of “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny” argues that misogyny is really not about male hostility or hatred towards women, as it’s commonly assumed. Instead, it’s about controlling and punishing women who challenge male dominance.

In an interview with Vox, Kate explained: “There’s a tendency to define misogyny as this deep hatred in the heart, harbored by men toward girls and women. I define misogyny as social systems or environments where women face hostility and hatred because they’re women in a man's world—a historical patriarchy.”

And what’s really alarming about misogyny is that it is something we practice almost unconsciously. The hostility towards women is something that’s a priori embedded in our culture where people internalize it through social norms and customs. In reality, it’s a trap for anyone born in an already misogyny-fueled society.

This happens too much and needs to stop. We are not just wives, parents, children etc. We are individuals and should have our achievements shared as individuals and not because we are related to someone else famous.

According to Kate, such hostile behavior comes from the fact that many people feel attached to the positions they believe are their birthright. “When men think women are taking opportunities and privileges away from them, when they think women are challenging male dominance, you get backlash,” she explained.

The closest I've ever heard is alluding to it - as in "Going to jail? Dont drop the soap in the shower!" Not funny, but it's the only example I can think of (and covers the double standard of male rape, so I'm not sure it counts for this list)

Usually it starts with a man calling a woman 'rape-able' as if that is a) an acceptable thing to say, and b) a compliment. Then someone calls him on it, and he claims "ItS JuST a JokE, FeMinIsTs aRe So OverSeNsiTiVE."

Literally jokes about rape. Like a woman is in a helpless situation, a man takes advantage of it and another man says something witty about how he wished he were in his place. Also there are some about marital rape. I wouldn't quote any of them here because I don't want to perpetuate them.

We have a french "humorist" that told that "joke" in a tv show: "A patient comes to see her doctor for a muscle tear. This one tells her to undress, and "grabs her", "tackles her on the desk", "f*cks her" and "dry in the a**" to show her what a real tear is." That's a rape joke. I hate this guy.

I heard my first Rape Joke in elementary school, and unsurprisingly, didn't understand it. When I did, I was angry. About a lady in the old west who had one bad thing after another happen to her, and she found herself tied naked to a tree. Along came the Lone Ranger, who started undoing his pants, and said to the lady, "Ma'am, this just ain't yore day!" Pardon the horrible retelling, but it's been 40 years since I heard it.

A string walks into a bar, the bartender says “we don’t serve your kind”. The string leaves, ties himself up, returns and when the bartender asks “aren’t you the same guy from before” he replies “I’m a frayed knot”. And then he got raped. I've been subject to this before when people called me roughly hugging a female friend (I'm gay, btw) a "molestation", and when I called them out on it, they said "Your Mom jokes aren't funny". 1: My Your Mom jokes are usually not inappropriate or vulgar, and whenever they are, it's usually on accident, 2: What makes you think a rape joke is even remotely funny, huh? I'd like a good, long, thorough explanation.

I worked at a call center and one of the guys would send rape jokes to our whole team. When I politely asked him to either stop, or exclude me from them because I didn't find the jokes funny, he said I was killing his vibe. The team leader, a woman, did nothing.

In the days after the fall of Berlin at the end of World War 2, it was common for Russian soldiers to rape German women. After raping a German woman, a Russian soldier, zipping up his fly, says "In nine months you will have a baby boy. Name him Boris! God bless Mother Russia"! The German woman replies, "In two weeks, you will have a sexually transmitted disease! Name it Syphilis! Heil Hitler!"

Well, this depends on the context of the joke and who or what they're making fun of. Two comedians started a show called Rape is Real & Everywhere as a way for survivors to share their experiences and to challenge rape culture in a comedic way. They ended up touring across the country with local comedians performing in each city. It was such a powerful show and so emotional. I cried and laughed throughout every single time I was able to go.

Because those are...jokes? Is anybody hurt? No. Do you find jokes about other topics as offensive? No? Why not? They are jokes for a reason. And before anybody starts coming at me for making rape "a funny joke", yes I have been raped and dark humour is one of the ways for me to help cope with the PTSD. If it's not your cup of tea, don't judge others upon it. Everyone has a different sense of humour.

There are a lot of people that enjoy morbid jokes about... dead babies, for example. There are a lot of cases of 17yo girls who had normal, consensual sex, threatening to sue a guy for raping her unless he pays her money. Would jokes about that kind of fake rape be more apropriate if made by a guy? There are people that had serious surgeries or nearly died, or have cancer and can still laugh about it. I personally think that if you're a healthy person you can find rape jokes funny even if you were raped.

Who determines "some topics"? Either we have absolute free speech or we don't. Because your rights and wrongs might not be identical to mine. For example, I am a vegan and have a lot of friends who talk and laugh about killing game. It makes me offended, but I don't act upon it because it's their freedom.

First off. Freedom of speech applies to government. And human decency determines which topics. If you think everything can or should be joked about- you might just lack some of it... And if anyone thinks rape jokes are ok or should be even a joke- you're trash. You're comparing jokes about food chain to an actual rape? Not even close...

As a way of dealing with misogyny in society, Kate believes it all comes down to men in positions of power accepting that women can surpass them without having wronged them. At this point, we are still far from this point, but externalizing our discontent is crucial in making things better, hence every debate, whether IRL or online, is a small step towards an equal, respectful society.

I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

Maybe half the police force in the US and many non developed countries. But not in most of the western world. We don't have a huge gun issue. EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.

To the know it all who made a comment about nurse’s salaries, I use to work in collections for auto loans. A lot of nurses defaulted on their payments. I know this might come as a surprise but people, nurses have other bills to pay, many have children, and many are single mothers. Just because someone is a nurse doesn’t automatically equal wealthy.

How come it's always single mom and that is seen as a bad thing. If ever there is a single dad he's sung like a hero. Unless he goes with his baby girl to the ladies toilet to change the diaper (because the changing tables are if at all only in the ladies toilet), then he's a pervert.

Women being emotional would not be such a problem for men if they had not been bullied into supressing their own emotions from early childhood.

Or we could try using the same terms for males as for females. So a guy who sleeps around is a s**t etc. It's not something I exactly approve of, but I think it wouldn't take long to get the point across to at least some more people

Yep. So many women have been brain washed by the patriarchy and they don't see the irony of getting male support when they stand up against feminism. Honey, you're need for male approval is showing.

Think of it as a standup comedian trying out material on the road. What gets a laugh stays, what doesn’t gets dropped from the comedy routine. I doubt that comedians get all that defensive if they have to abandon a joke.

I think girls are also trained early to like being objectified. If you see girl magazines there's nothing with STEM or brilliance of the mind, always with how does your hair look or if this dress makes me fat. Baby outfits are already with sexual innuendos - watch out boys for this cutie etc.

I find the amount of pro-rape propaganda constantly coming from conservatives to be terrifying. That there's a whole huge segment of society who seems to be doing everything they can to be allowed to rape without consequence.

This. F*****g terrifying. (The book terrified me when I was Handmaid age. As I got older and knew I’d be sent to the colonies, either for being past childbearing age or for being a very outspoken anti-Gilead activist, I was almost relieved. At least the women in the colonies have some freedom to be themselves. However, I never ever want to see us even think of pursuing that kind of path. Ever.)

I love that song, great tune and the lyrics are so hilariously pathetic.
