Controversial Comic Reveals What You’re Really Saying When You Support Gender Equality, But Not Feminism

Gender equality is the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender. Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. As you can see from this funny cartoon by Nathan Yaffe from CollegeHumor however, even though the two terms share many similarities, some people have very different ideas about what they actually mean.

While feminism is fundamentally about gender equality, some folks think that true equality can only come about by oppressing and persecuting men in the same way that men have done to women throughout history. It makes for a funny cartoon, but in reality it’s important to remember that this is far from what gender equality actually means! Do you think the artist made his point? Let us know in the comments below. (h/t: collegehumor)

This cartoon illustrates the danger in trying to encapsulate a philosophy in a catchy name. No one's beliefs are cookie-cutter enough to fit a label.

The comic has hit the nail on the head. Feminism is fighting for equal treatment and equal rights, not worsening the treatment towards men or going eye for an eye. It's for raising the standard for women, not lowering the standard for men.

I like the way these cartoons show the difference between true feminism which is about gender equality.....raising the standard for women not lowering the standard for men or getting back at them for the sins of their fathers.

Sometimes people get more focused on terms than the concept itself. How are we ever going to really find the answers when we cannot agree on the language used to formulate the question..

There are extremists in everything. But you can't judge the whole movement just for a few! Feminism is about equality for the sexes, gender, sexuality, race, religion! It's more broad than just that :)

Oh wow this comic really backfired. It looks like some people are fighting to oppress men. But in fact this is a comic FOR feminism and AGAINST calling it gender equality. It's an argument about the name of the movement.

Too many women use the term "feminist" to oppress men and put women above men in all situations. That's not what feminism is supposed to be about. It's supposed to be about gender equality. It pisses me off SO MUCH when I hear someone say ,"I'm a feminist" and then go on to say how women should be superior in more than one sense.

Not trying to defend anyone but...but when I was a kid air didn't want to be a Feminist. Why? Because I thought that people who promoted or declared themselves as Feminists were Bossy. I felt this because I studied at an All-Girls School and I was bullied and treated as an Outcast by Girls. I, for some reason have always gotten along better with the Male Sex. But then I realised that I could be a better version of people I met. I can be assertive without being arrogant, I never gossip and never B***h about any man or women. This is just a note to every women out there. We are our BIGGEST enemies. We need to be more accepting and less judgemental about other women and men. If a woman aborts or if she doesn't - support her anyways,it's her life. If a Woman-gains or loses weight, divorces or marries, eat 2 whole pizzas or goes on a diet, is a chauffeur or a doctor, is white or black or red or blue...just accept her. We have a right to our own lives, and how to live them is our decision

Mark: I hate to point this out, but there is at least one movement that DOES call for white people to be enslaved. At one point Louis Farakan had a movement going, and that is exactly what he was proposing.

Tell that to a guy that gets passed up for a job simply based on a female applying as well..seen it (part of the liberal PC effect...check Google's recent story to see what happens when an employee speaks up). Tell that to the father who gets divorced and has his butt handed to him by the court and no chance of custody as it is biased towards the mother (even my mother saw this and took action to make it more fair to them both). I might also add that in today's atmosphere...it's only sexist if it's against a woman. There is no situation I've ever seen where anything anyone can say or do would be considered 'sexist' against a man...nothing. Oh I almost forgot one. All a woman has to do these days is 'claim' a guy did something (over the phone or otherwise) to authorities and they take it as fact. I fell victim to that shortly after my dad died .. and it was later debunked...but not until going through a whole lot of c**p in the process.

They AREN'T funny when reversed, that's the point. It's supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and realise that discriminating men also isn't the right way to go (...obviously) but yes, that is why feminists exist in the first place! To help out all of those people!

This comic is awesome, as a student of history it pretty much nails every aspect of the historical oppression of women and turns it on its head. Its utterly subversive and its exactly what is needed to counter the toxic absurdity of anti feminist bloggers and "activists."

Where does it "hit the nail"? I didn’t see any women going to war, or working in all the s****y and dangerous jobs, becoming 97% of a the job fatalities, neither I saw women being the majority of the homeless people, having almost no shelters available for them while men have way more shelters regardless of being less affected by homelessness. This comic just cherry-picks what the author considers to be the “oppression of women” while pretending men always got the best deal in society. A complete miss in my opinion.

Lol I get this, its funny. But its also confusing for a lot of people, the "real gender equality" person is saying to literally reverse the roles, so both genders have had good times and bad times for equal. But thats not gonna happen and its not what feminists want :P

...That's the thing. People are more extreme about feminism, making it ridiculed. I don't care what we call it. I don't care how we do it. Can't we just love and respect one another?? It's not that hard, especially on an individual level. Don't choose a candidate BECAUSE they're a male or female, choose them for their credentials, for their individual traits - and those traits don't include things like gender, race or height. It's about what they do, what they've experienced and who they are inside. Individualism, not about being different from the crowd, but individualism about seeing people for who they are and not what they look like.

Men bashing is going so far away from equality. Just because I'm a women doesn't mean that anything a man does is offensive. When y husband holds the door for me it's not because he doesn't think I can,it's just because he's nice.

Feminism is about equality - for men and women. Although a lot of so-called feminists think that women are better than men - they are not true feminists. And a subculture of men think that all feminists are like that.

I say that we should just let people do what they want besides rape, theft, murder. basically anyone can do what the hell they want as long it doesn't affect someone else in a negative way and if you affect someone in a negative way then eye for an eye unless rape, then we tie you up and let the victim beat the c**p out of you till they feel at peace.

Sarah White

Eh, but that also gets complicated. Technically, being gay could affect someone in a negative way by making them uncomfortable. But its shouldn't be illegal to be gay, should it? My general rule is "do whatever you want as long as everyone involved is consenting". But even that doesn't work all of the time. No one can set one standard rule to everything, why do you think so many laws have passed? Everyone is different, you'll treat everyone differently, that's just how it works.

I completely disagree. Non of these comics are about gender equality. They are about the disadvantages that women have faces for millennium, turned on it's head to focus on how it would look like if males were in "traditional" female roles - nothing about equality.

In my country, feminists are known to express hate towards males. I've been myself confronted by feminists coming from a march, and questioned why was I dressed with a skirt, that a skirt is surely to please male eyes, that my heels belonged to a phallocentric society... and more of such nonsense. Feminists (in my country) also stand against a father claiming custody of his children, even is the kids express that thay don't want to live with their mother, and a lot of other nonsense that instead of giving more power to females, they mean to achieve "equality" by lowering male' rights. So no, I'm not a feminist. I prefer to be called equalist and give more rights to females, not stripping males from theirs. I repeat, in the context of MY country that is Argentina. Maybe in other countries, feminists have a more logic approach.

Every group has their extreme (i.e. nutcase) element. After all, we still have some men who think the women's right to vote should be repealed, others who think there's nothing wrong with rape, because all women 'secretly want it'. So it's not unusual that some feminists go overboard in the opposite direction. I tend to try avoiding *all* fruitcakes.

Why does it matter what terminology we use? I prefer to be called an equalist, myself. But I don't care if someone calls themselves feminist. I just don't like to be defined as someone who's always fighting for something. But maybe others do. Why these days all the quibbling about what's the "correct" way to call something?

Agreed, the point the comic is stupidly making is that true gender equality would mean that men would have to go through everything women had to be even, dowries and telling men not to go to school etc this is what we are Really Saying When We Support Gender Equality, But Not Feminism. The argument is so bizarre and stupid that it ends up supporting all the bad stereotypes of feminism, telling people what they really mean and think and that feminist being out for revenge rather than equal treatment.

It's a cute attempt to try and kill the very fair statement "I'm not a feminist I'm an egalitarian". It's easy to tear apart the people who are out and out bigots who simply fear all men and call us evil; but the problem with even more general and mainstream feminism is it does harbor similar feelings. The problem is feminism's culture A. Doesn't believe in or want mass debate, convtreversial ideas are often framed as education, disagreement is simply ignorance, and B. It runs off a false victim narrative, whether it be in the form of "women were oppressed for hundreds of years" or even just the idea that to quote from this comment section "Raising the standards for women is a first step, because they are the most disadvantaged - especially when factoring in race and ethnicity, age, religion, etc." This basically all means that even if you can show that men have issues to at best it's simply paid lip service and at worst it's either minimized. Feminism is not about equality.

The word some feminists are working towards is "egalitarian". The belief that all persons should be treated with equal respect and care regardless of any other factor but simply that they are human. Thus I am not a feminist bevause the very word itself MAY be defined as being pro-female OVER men or at the very least only working towards "equality" for one side. But you know... big words and language and all... meanings and definitions. Nobody seems to care because humanity appears to be getting dumber and dumberer every year and stupidity affects both men and women.

LOL, these comments are an analogy of "not all men". Anyway, the point is moot. Gender inequality will be a thing of the past really soon. It's calling out people that say that they don't support feminism they support gender equality because feminist despite claiming to want gender equality is really about revenge and female supremacy. The comic kind of fails in what it's trying to achieve, it's basically saying that real gender equality would mean that men would have to go through the years of suffering and oppression that women had to get to the point they're at now in the west, and that feminist only want to be treated fairly. Well the fact that the feminist that wrote this piece believes that gender equality means men would having to go through what women had too is proving the point that the people that support gender equality but not feminism are making, that feminist believe that gender equality is about getting even not being treated equal. I do not believe that all feminist think like this I'm only pointing out that this comic fails in what it's trying to achieve.

There is a big difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. There was an article today about the difficulties of getting more women to enter and finish a bicycle race across Siberia. People who believe in equality of opportunity might make an effort to recruit women from various women's endurance sports. Equality of outcome people have suggested things like allowing women to compete in teams, each riding a portion of the race while the other rides in a support vehicle. The sad truth is that only a tiny percentage of men could ever complete that race, no matter how much training they had. And the number of women who could ever do it is exponentially smaller. It is very hard for some people to accept that there is not going to be a political solution to that basic biological problem. There are plenty of places where women can be competitive with men. But not every situation. And the converse applies as well.

Ok. I'll take the ball you threw and throw it back at you. I think (and there is NO scientific evidence for this, just as you have nothing on your side) that men evolved to be bigger and stronger because women, having superior intellects, needed someone to do all of the dirty, dangerous jobs that would interfere with planning and running the world. Poor men are so testosterone poisoned that it means they just don't have the brain power to manage things, so they're far better off lifting and carrying and doing all of the dangerous jobs.

HAHAHAHA This comics are s**t. I guess: there was a female doing them..? lesbian? why you just don't stop trying to 'fix the world?' If girls are superior, take the f*****g control! I guess you did! My f*****g grandparents were pro'males, but I know pretty much so I can be a feminist person right now. But there is a thing we will NEVER will be equals. You want power, and men don;t care. And the reason we don't care: because phisycally we are stronger by Nature: Lions, gorillas, Rhinos.. we don;t need your consent. We know the past generations used you. Is not our fault. Is not our debt. Think about that.

Try this, "feminist" don't all believe one thing. It's not a religion. For example, I think abortion is wrong, but I also support a woman's right to choose. I don't have a problem with alimony given the right circumstances. There are grey areas. Your setting up a "straw man" argument

Feminism is about female power not equality which the LGBT community stand for! I'm all for "anyone can do anything"and even though I'm straight it makes me smile and feel proud to see people comfortable with who they are!

Uh, no. Feminism is NOT about 'female power'. Look up the definition. It's about equal rights for all genders. A true feminist will also fight for the rights of men who are oppressed by 'expected standards' (aka: letting men get in touch with their softer side without being branded as 'wusses'), as well as those in the LGBTQA+ community. Human equality. *sigh* I really wish they'd picked another name for the movement. It leads to exactly this kind of misinterpretation.

A complete miss in my opinion.

...That's the thing.

If you profess to be something that ends in "ist", and it's not your vocation, shut the hell up. No one gives a s**t but you.

This cartoon is propaganda. It's the opposite of what people who don't identify as feminist means.

From what I hear many so-called feminists say, the artist has their concepts backwards.

Can feminism answer this:Why shouldn't men get alimony and maintenance? Why men have to pay?Why feminist get angry about Men's rights?

Try this, "feminist" don't all believe one thing. It's not a religion. For example, I think abortion is wrong, but I also support a woman's right to choose. I don't have a problem with alimony given the right circumstances. There are grey areas. Your setting up a "straw man" argument

Funny about other ladies who ask for EQUALITY. They'll hate a guy who doesn't give away their seat for a woman on a public transportation.(except Pregnant, PWD and Old Citizens)

I don't expect anyone to give me their seat. So I suppose that theory is wrong.
