40 Movies Nobody Ever Talks About, But Are Cult Classics According To People In This Online Group
The rule is that if a movie is good, it will become popular because people will be talking about it. Then they will be able to share their opinions on it, what they liked and what they didn’t like, was it like they expected it to be, but there are exceptions to this rule.
There are movies that some individuals consider to be the best they have ever seen, but it seems that others haven’t even heard of them. It’s a shame that good movies with interesting plot lines and good acting work aren’t seen by more people, but Reddit user darkweirdvalley probably changed that by asking “What’s a movie you love that you swear no one ever talks about like the world has forgotten it?”
More than 35k people joined the thread to share what they think are cinematographic masterpieces more people should know of and to find like-minded people. It’s safe to say that the movies they mentioned are not forgotten and they finally found someone to talk to about them.
Upvote the answers that you agree with the most and if you think that there are more movies that deserve more recognition, let us know in the comments!

The Birdcage

The Birdcage is comedy royalty in my mind. I mean, Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Diane Weist, Gene Hackman, Calista Flockhart, Christine Baranski and Hank Azaria!
Everyone played their roles to perfection, either over the top yet endearing, or the straight man role that facilitated the comedy.
Seriously im going to watch it now.
I probably watch this one a few times a year. Worth the price of admission just to see Gene Hackman in drag. gene-hackm...3b0e96.jpg
Death becomes her.
My all time fav movie, amazing cast and plot but I have never found a single soul who would praise it with me :/
A Fish Called Wanda. I don't know anyone irl, under the age of 40, that knows this movie! It's one of the funniest movies ever. My favorite Kevin Kline movie, hand down!
Love this one. Comedy perfection. "To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people! I've known sheep that could outwit you! I've worn dresses with higher IQs!" michael-pa...00e4b6.jpg
Constantine with Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weiss. Love that movie, but no one ever seems to know what I’m talking about
This is one of my top 10 favorite movies. It got a lot of hate because it really didn't do a good job of interpreting the source material but I still love both the movie and the comic book. Brilliant casting with Tilda Swinton as the angel Gabriel.
I searched (this thread) and didn't find it (listed already), so (I decided to add)
Batteries Not Included.
It's a cute little 80s movie about some alien robots who took up residence in this old apartment complex and when the residents are threatened with eviction so the place could be torn down, the robots help the tenants and the tenants help the robot aliens. Anyways, I enjoyed it.
Short Circuit, literally everyone that I talk to has never watched it, or heard of it. It's sad too, because I love that movie so much.
The Pink Panther Strikes Again
"Does your dog bite?"
"No"
(dog snarls and bites him)
"I thought you said your dog doesn't bite?"
"That is not my dog"
Grosse Point Blank. Hitman goes to high school reunion.

A great 1980s sword and sorcery movie.
yes, just be prepared for the cheesiest 80s synth score known to man. however, it is what i really mean when i say i want dark fairy tales. serious subject matter (religion, corruption, lust, greed, guilt, etc.) but with the happily ever after and the true love.

You can practically never go wrong with Neil Gaiman and Robert deNiro in drag.

Funny story with this one. I studied the book at school, so I had read the book a lot. That year for my birthday the movie came out around the same time. I have a fractured family structure so none of them really talk to each other. For some reason nearly every family member decided that they wanted to take me to a screening of the film. So I saw the film nearly 7 times in the matter of two weeks.
My grandma was one of the last, I didn’t have the heart to tell her I had already seen it 6 times already. We were sitting and watching and unintentionally, I was saying the lines word for word. My grandma noticed and she asked “have you seen this already?” I responded “no, it’s just very accurate to the book” to which she replied “wow, you must have read the book many times.
Enemy Mine.
The end scene still gets me.
Drop Dead Fred "That's not how the pigeons do it!!" "Cobwebs" Absolutely fell in love with Rik Myall from the very first time I saw that movie!!
Evolution, by the late Ivan Reitman, with David Duchovny and Julianne Moore.
Aside from one instance on Reddit, I’ve never heard a single person talk about the 2005 movie Robots. It’s got adult jokes that kids won’t catch, a lot of humor, and Robin Williams.
I didn't realise it wasn't that popular, I thoroughly enjoyed it and even have it on DVD.

I like reminding people that All Star is from that movie originally, and not Shrek.
Mouse Hunt
Nathan Lane, Lee Evans, Christopher Walken in one of his best roles
One of my childhood favorites
Fly Away Home. Was obsessed with it and it is never mentioned. Was it a fever dream???
Wonderful movie! Yeah, I remember it, I should watch it again, but mainly I want every human being aged 10-16 to watch it. One of the best coming-of-age movies ever made, and one of the few that tells kids that growing out of childhood isn't just about falling in love.
Balto! Which I could have sworn was massively popular!! When people started talking about The Swan Princess again randomly, I assumed Balto would be next as they were two of my favorites as a kid. Yet when I mentioned it to my friends and such, no one recalled it.
Also please let me mention the 10th Kingdom which is technically a series! Ah suck an elf.
Thank You for Smoking. And the irony of the whole film is nobody actually smokes a cigarette as well. I always loved that small detail.
Although there are deleted scenes of them smoking but thankfully they decided to keep them out of the theatrical release.
“9” directed by Shane Acker, produced by Tim Burton.
I thought it was amazing, but the only time k bring it up, 90% of people have never heard of it, the other 10% hate it.
It sucks, but I’m convinced I’m the only fan of that movie. It was so different and dark. And the cast was amazing, it was a fantastic adult animated tale.
It just sucks no one is ever able to fan boy over it with me.

The Court Jester. I've never met anyone outside of my family who has even heard of it. It's really old so I understand why, but It's a shame more people haven't seen it.
GormenghastCastle responded:
OH MY GOD! Every time I see a movie post like this I open it to check for The Court Jester and you're the first time I've seen anyone mention it! And it's so high too (at least as of commenting this). Finally my persistence pays off!

Think I’m gonna put it on again this weekend.
Zathura 100% If you haven't seen it, it's like Jumanji but in space, it's made by the same creator, if you have seen it, tell me im not alone
Adding onto this, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and it's sequel, The Next Level. I thought it'd be crap because it's a reboot, but dear god was is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Treasure Planet
Humble-Grumble added:
This is my favourite movie of all time and it definitely defined a large part of my childhood. The art kicked off my interest in drawing (usually bad OCs, but it was fun); the aesthetic and story inspired my imagination to run wild; the awesome soundtrack fueled those fantasies (hello, maladaptive daydreaming); it got me to read Treasure Island; and it started an interest in sci-fi, fantasy, and, oddly, naval history...the latter bringing me closer to my dad, who's really into naval history. Treasure Planet meant so freakin' much to me that it's almost embarrassing when I look back on it (I was shamefully obsessed). It also had a Hell of a cult following online.
Yet 90% of the time I mention it to someone, I get a blank look. That whole era of animated films is vastly underappreciated.
This movie and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I watched both for the first time a few years ago and I was shocked with how good they were.

Death to Smoochie
DubiousDrewski responded:
I just can NOT understand why this movie isn't universally loved. Robin Williams and Edward Norton playing completely against-type in such a hilarious way. Catherine Keener is excellent. Danny Davito and Harvey Fierstein are perfectly cast and perfectly hilarious.
I just don't f*****g get it! 42% on Rotten Tomatoes! What the F**k? WHAT THE F**K?
This movie's lack of success proves to me that I do not understand the world. I do not understand art. This movie is brilliant and hilarious, and I do not understand why more people don't see this.
I have never logged in here before, even though I have wanted to many, many times, but this entry... this entry right here is reason enough to log in. Death To Smoochie is comedy gold. Edward Norton is hilarious... I still want to see someone get drunk on alfalfa drops and orange juice! And Robin Williams... oh, gods, to see him playing a villain. I have this gem on DVD, and love watching it when I'm feeling depressed. It is ridiculous, but so, so, so worth it!
Drop Dead Gorgeous. MOAST SMAERTEST.
One of my favorite movies is an old black and white one from the 40s called "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". I never meet anyone who's even heard of it.
Muriels Wedding. Very sweet and funny Australian movie about a girl in a small town, who is always mocked about how unsuccesful and ugly she is, until she takes her life in her own hands while being morally supported by ABBA songs. The Waterloo revenge scene is my favourite.
Another one that should be on this list: What Dreams May Come, with Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding jr. Robin Williams in such a serious, straight laced role really opened my eyes to what an absolute gem and artistic talent he was. I miss him endlessly, and I really should watch that one again in his memory.
Don't know why, but recently I keep trying to find "don't tell mom the babysitter's dead" - loved that as a kid and want to see how badly it's aged
I'd like to add "Sneakers". Robert Redford, River Phoenix, Dan Akroyed, etc etc. Great cast, funny and smart.
Fried green tomatoes at whistle stop cafe. Firm fave and practical magic. Just two I love
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. I laughed so hard El orfanato (The Orphanage)- very good ghost movie. Crna mačka, beli mačor (Black Cat, White Cat)- it was crazy af, but that ending. Love it.
I love the Tremors series. Especially the fourth film which is a prequel set in the old west. Gun slinging cowboys facing giant man eating underground worms? Holy CRAP that's badass. Also Tremors invented the whole "Monster that hunts you by sound so you have to stay really quiet" concept before A Quiet Place did.
The Fisher King a wonderful Terry Gilliam movie with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams. I love that movie. Watch it pple!
I think Pan's Labyrinth should be on this list. Not sure if it was actually really big outside the US, but when I talk about it in the US people get really interested until I tell them it's subtitled. But it was done so well I always end up forgetting that I'm reading subtitles and is hands down one of my favorite movies of all time
I miss "The 'Burbs" in this list. One of my all-time favorite Tom Hanks movies.
Bugsy Malone, by Alan Parker, is my alltime favourite. Miese and men, Gary sinise and John Malkovich... Cat Ballou.... Jane fonda, Lee Marvin, nat king Cole etc. It's so funny and even the horse is drunk
How is Willow not on this list?! High fantasy, camp, and Val Kilmer just chewing away at the scenery. If you know "my old disappearing pig trick", you know.
"The Best Years of Ours Lives" circa 1946-7. If that isn't what home after war is like, then... well, it's always relevant, IMO. And I'll never surrender my love for A Cat In Paris.
Quirky cult movies: "11:14" , "29 palms" "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" "Mama" Don't forget to watch "Jojo Rabbit"
Rabbit Proof Fence - 2002, about the escape of 3 aboriginal girls and their trip across the Outback. The Triplets of Belleville - A most imaginative and creatively illustrated animated story with a great soundtrack.
Krull. Dragon Slayer. The Beastmaster. Flight of the Dragons. Legend.
Top Secret with Val Kilmer. I can sing along with the songs. I love this movie and it seems like no one else has heard of it.
I didnt see Labyrinth with David Bowie! I absolutely love this movie but very very few have ever even heard of it. I also loved Private Eyes with Don Knotts and Tim Conway! It was filmed at the Biltmore House! Hilarious
Unpopular choice: Beverly Hills Chihuahua, our cats watched it from start to finish!
True Romance is my all time favorite Christian Slater movie....also love Welcome to the Dollhouse, Melancholia, Last Stop for Paul, This Boy's Life and pretty much anything Sam Rockwell is in no matter how obscure. I will have to give some of the films mentioned in this conversation a try
Big Fish with Albert Finney - A beautiful, quirky, and memorable story that blurs the line between dreams and reality.
I'd add: Fresh (1994), Swimming with sharks (1994) and Judgement night (1993).
I enjoy watching "Shoot 'em up" . It's not for everybody but maybe they made that movie just for me.
I have watched pretty much every one of these movies, some of them a lot of times. But I’m 50, so I guess it depends on your age
Soo...only movies from English speaking countries? I think you need to broaden your horizons.
Harold and Maud. A weird movie about a young man who falls in love with an 80 year old woman. The rest is so weird that it's hard to explain it.
The Court Jester is one of my favorite old films! I love that it's on this list! Danny Kaye was such a talent and a master of physical comedy. His wife wrote all the songs for the movie and the musical sequences were just so much fun! Plus, you have a young Angela Lansbury and Glynnis Johns who are both fantastic as a spoiled princess and a rebel spy, respectively. This is the film that coined the expression: " Get it? Got it. Good!". Definitely a classic! 🙂
It Happened One Night with Clark Cable and Claudette Colbert. Meet John Doe with Cary Cooper as well as him in Ball of Fire with Barbara Stanwick. I really liked Razors Edge but funnily enough the Bill Murray version. My teenager and I recently watched Wings the first academy award winner for best picture. Silent, but you soon forget you’re reading as well cuz really good. And My Man Godfrey with Carol Lombard is so funny. Oldies but all stand the test of time, still relatable and nothing now inappropriate.
Robert Altman’s live action Popeye starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duval got terrible reviews when it was released but I loved it.
You missed the best comedy and most romantic movie ever made about New York: A Thousand Clowms.
How can you miss Labyrinth and 2 Vincent Price masterpieces: The Abominable Dr Phibes and Dr Phibes Rises From The Grave! Campy. Catchy. Well worth finding.
Also forgot to mention The Man with Two Brains with Steve Martin, The Man Who Knew Too Little, and What About Bob? with Bill Murray.
I love just about every movie on this list. What's missing is "The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert"
Okay, its not a "good" movie, per se, but if you wanna see some crazy s**t, Meet the Feebles. Its muppets on crack. Literally. Same director as Lord of the Rings
I've seen most of these and have them either on DVD or saved on my TV. :) What about the last starfighter? I mention that one and I get confused looks....
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. My #1 favorite movie. Yes I have weird taste.
I totally agree with you on the movie “9.” I own a dvd copy. I recall anticipating for it to come to the local theaters on 9-9-2009.
Did anyone mention "A New Leaf" with Walter Matthau & Elaine May? Great low key comedy that ends on a sweet note
Jock and the bushveld, is another South African classic that not very many ppl n know about. Just a warning there is one very sad scene. (won't spoil) but a must watch.
Hercules Returns, 1993, Australian's scrambling to dub over the movie being played in their cinema when the reel arrives with Italian audio instead of English. Who else has seen it? Tell me it isn't one of the funniest movies ever created?! "On one condition, ya lower yer nipples!". To this day that line has me rolling on the floor.
My vote would be “Brother From Another Planet”. Don’t let the goofy name fool you. This cult favorite from the 80’s is about an enslaved alien who comes to earth to escape oppression. He’s Black and is hunted by evil white-skinned “police”. It’s poignant and thoughtful, well worth the effort to find it.
I feel like everyone here would love Tubi TV. It's free and it's loaded with gems you forgot existed! Just watched a fish called Wanda.
I know a lot of these and I like them. I am not even an american. Is it possible that some of these were actually more popular outside of the US? Like short circuit, the last unicorn, NIMH: oh I loved them as a child and still love then today. Such classics. Death is on her, Mouse hunt - I kind of liked them back then, but not so much these days. Hoodwinked: Am I so old that this is considered a classic already? :-D I remember when I went to the cinema to see it. a genuis film and a wonderful czech dubbing really I wouldnt even watch it in my language I want to hear the immortal czech lines... I found some candles...dynamite...yeah that is probably something in italian :-D
Flight of the Navigator is one of my all time favourite films. I have a 3D printed Puckmaren :D It was my absolute fave as a kid. I loved DARYL as well from the same era. I don't think they're underrated, they're just kids' films of their time. Neither are close to unheard of or unknown by people who were kids in the 80s.
One of my all time favorites is State and Main. Written and directed by David Mamet, (Wag the Dog), it's worth finding.
'I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore'. I don't know anybody who's seen it, but it's one of my favorites. Also, 'The Other Guys'.
Try non English speaking movies, they deserve to be mentioned. I'll add a Dutch movie Antonia's line (1995).One of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen!
If you like the “grungy/gritty” type of movie, The Sultan Sea is one of my absolute favorites!! Connects on so many different levels!
Once Were Warriors amazing movie but hard to watch ... one of those "watch once" movies that stick with you and will make you think about them regularly.
What about any of Mel Brooks movies like Dracula: Dead & Loving It, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Blazing Saddles, & Young Frankenstein. As well Silver Streak with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.
I've been tracking down older kids movies like Second Hand Lions, Flight of the Navigator, Fly Away Home, Holes. I don't like to be a "kids these days" kind of person, but I really haven't found kids movies these days that have the same slow plot and character development. Everything is so bright and noisy and has micro-second shots and it all goes really fast. I feel like it's not great for kid's attention spans. I can only think of a few newer kids movies that are slower like that, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. "We Can Be Heroes" on Netflix was pretty good. (Side note: DO NOT watch Bridge to Tarabithia without first reading through a plot summary and deciding if your kids can handle it. My kids did not. I didn't know. It was a bad night.)
Empire Records - Anthony La Paglia, Rory Cochrane, Renee Zellweger, Liv Tyler, cracking sound track. Remix Fan Edition is the superior version in my opinion. So many fun moments, especially the shoplifter chase!
Two of my favorites that NO ONE even knows about 1) "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" (2001), made to be incredibly bad its funny and some great quotes! 2) "Noises Off" (1992). Its about a stage play being put on and all the shananagans that happens backstage before, during and after the show.
Midnight Special. Basically ET meets Superman as a boy. Very surprised by it. Michael Shannon is just incredible.
Does Magnolia belong here? And Total Eclipse, with Leonardo di Caprio playing the poet Rimbaud, complete with full-frontal nudity.
One Crazy Summer. One of John Cusack's lesser known 80's movies. My brothers and I have been obsessed with it our whole lives. We freak whenever we encounter someone that knows it.
For me a forgotten classic is flight of dragons with james earl jones as the red wizard. It's an 80s animated movie that is as beautiful as the last unicorn. Very similar art styles. 3 that were small news when i first got hooked on them were: 1. Split infinity 2. Behind the waterfall with gary burghoff 3. Rigoletto not the opera
Leningrad Cowboys Go America is one of my favourite movies. I make all of my friends watch it
Life with Father is one of my favs. Rebecca, since it is hardly to never played anywhere because of copyright issues. TCM can't even play it.
Where is Local Hero? Buckaroo Banzai across the 9th Dimension? And Diva.
I think another that can probably be added is: The Outsiders. Just me? Absolutely loved the book and movie!
My girls love Serial Mom with Kathleen Turner, Ricky Lake, Matthew Lillard, and other stars. Their mom ends up killing people in the most hilarious, gruesome, shocking ways, but nobody believes it's her. It's so funny. Everyone they've showed it to has loved it.
Labyrinth -- David Bowie, Jim Henson. What was he on when he designed this? Blow a kiss to M.C. Esher and enjoy!
“The Terminal”, Tom Hanks acting is among the best performances I’ve ever seen and I believe it’s one of his lesser known movies.
If any of these films are not in your library, kick yourself in the ass or face whichever is closer or bigger and go get them. This list is startlingly, astoundingly perfect in its inclusivity and I have probably never seen such a close to perfect list in all my born days. Is this the months long labor of a madman or the momentary inspiration of a saint? Must be both. GET THESE FILMS. If you already have them all, a blessing upon your house, even though I deny that there is anything that provides blessings.
Sorry for everyone I'm about to make feel old but: I'm a 2007 kid, I've only heard of one of these and it was "Robots"
One of my favorites that is not on this list is “Gentleman Broncos”, by the same writer as Napoleon dynamite, great movie but it bombed in theaters. Sam Rockwell is great in it, so many funny parts throughout the movie, highly suggest watching this movie if you liked Napoleon Dynamite.
One of my favorite "forgotten" movies is The Land Before Time. The whole series really. Very cute little dinosaur movies
Oh wow there are so many: - The Princess Bride - This is Spinal Tap - The Rocker - Hot Rod - Napoleon Dynamite - Nacho Libre I could go on
Strike:All I Wanna Do! Kirsten Duntz, Gaby Hoffman, Rachel Leigh Cook, Merrit Weaver, Heather Matarazzo, and Vincent Kartheiser in a comedy about girls at a private school in the sixties starting a revolution when the board tries to merge with a boys school. I found it by accident and it became one of my favorites. Makes me tear up every time. Genuinely bummed that people don't know about it. "Up your ziggy with a wa wa brush!"
Not Another Teen Movie, The Matriarch, Hurricane Bianca, and Booksmart should also be here.
Passion of Mind with Demi Moore. I don't know anyone else who has watched this one but I love it!
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken- love this movie and it's hard to find now
Freddie as F.R.O.7 was mine. Cannot find this anywhere for love nor money!!
One of my favorite movies is an old black and white one from the 40s called "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". I never meet anyone who's even heard of it.
