Father Publicly Disowns His Son With A Powerful Open Letter After He Marches In Charlottesville Protests

The small town of Charlottesville, Virginia, is making international headlines after a right-wing multi-group protest scheduled for August 11th turned shockingly violent. A Fargo, North Dakota man named Pearce Tefft has bravely stepped forward to denounce and disown his son, who identifies as a white nationalist and marched at the fateful Unite the Right rally. “Peter Tefft, my son, is not welcome at our family gatherings any longer,” he writes in a powerful open letter published on August 14th.

The Tefft family announcement comes just 6 months after Peter was labelled by locals in his hometown as a ‘Nazi,’ following the discovery of disturbing Nazi Germany-related content he had shared on social media. Though Tefft has refused the title and prefers to be known as a “pro-White activist,” his father admits in his letter that Peter has made jokes about throwing non-Fascists “into an oven.” Pearce Tefft, a liberal Democrat, maintains that his wayward son did not learn this discriminatory behaviour at home, and that the entire family rejects his actions and beliefs.

The Charlottesville protests, which Peter traveled from North Dakota to attend, escalated into chaos after a man associated with the neo-Nazi movement rammed into a crowd of pedestrians with his car, killing a 32-year-old woman named Heather Heyer. The rallies were triggered by plans to remove Confederate monuments from public spaces in Charlottesville, and have spurred new conversations about interracial conflict in the USA.

Read Pearce Tefft’s poignant letter below, and tell us what you think at the end.

I think it takes a lot for a father to disown his son so strongly. It was necessary to show people that the father et al is not guilty by association so he was right to write this.

The thing with this is that people only go along with these things when they are vulnerable individuals or incredibly ignorant of the world. It is the reason ISIS has managed to recruit so many young people. While I agree with the stand this father has taken, I would like to know how many times they have tried to reach out to him and talk about this, to understand why he thinks like he does. The guy is young, impressionable and an idiot in understanding race. While what he has done is inexcusable, everyone should be looking at why someone from such an accepting family could be so easily swayed to hate the world. I don't see public shaming and isolation can possibly help him. I don't know what the solution is, but I'm not sure this is the right one. I guess it all depends on how much his family means to him and whether he is prepared to lose them over his feeling of superiority.

I seem to remember that there was a little police action called World War II where the Nazis were defeated and denounced by most of the rest of the world. My question is, even in the face of freedom of speech, why in hell do we as Americans that sent our young men and women to fight against the Nazis, allow these animals freedom to roam our streets?

This "pro-white" stuff reminds me of another phenomenon that's prevalent in the U.S. called "Christian persecution". Basically, some Christians (mainly Evangelicals) think that they're being persecuted because, nowadays, people won't like them if they bash gay people or they get pissy about people not putting Jesus first in Christmas (while not knowing or acknowledging that the majority of Christmas stuff is hand-lifted from pagan holidays like Saturnalia, and Jesus was just shoved in afterwards to fit Christianity into already familiar holidays and practices). The reason they feel like this is that they used to be, basically, the only respected group in America, so the introduction of social equality causing them to have to tolerate other people feels like persecution to them.

I don't understand being racist in any capacity. Being racist requires one to be ignorant of reality and accuse people of things based on genetic phenotype. It's like hating black dogs or tabby cats specifically. You have no basis that they're worse or different, but you can group them as visually distinct, so that's "good enough", apparently.

Well apparently, the Jews are conspiring to wipe out the white race, so white nationalist need to preserve their race and make sure it remains the majority. This is genuinely what they believe, I kid you not.

well done to his father! disgusting behaviour from the son. and for anyone still trying to blame this guys parents, once we are grown we are responsible for ourselves! its not right to blame the parents when a lot of the time kids will do the exact opposite of what a parent says just to act out.

Most of my family was killed by the Nazis in the ovens in Poland, Germany and other countries who were members of the Axis and not the Allies. To go back in time over 75 years to a different time in our country's history means we have not grown or changed in all these years. Why have we not learned from the hatred we spread so many years ago?

I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been for the father to write this letter. Such courage is what we all must show to stop the hatred coming from the KKK, Neo-nazis and white supremacists led by that abomination in the White House. Until he is gone the alt-right will keep inciting violence and murder. Charlottesville is only the beginning. With trump's blessing, those anti-American haters will get bolder and cause more violence.

This made me cry a little. It's horrible that the family had to have that happen with a son they raised to be good. The father was very brave to make this letter and it must have broken the hearts of all who loved him in the family. It's so sad that people do this. I hope some day we decide race does not determine who you are. It is your actions that do. 😔

Yes, the father's decision was absolutely right on, as difficult and painful as it must have been for him and the rest of the family. Young people need to understand that their actions have consequences. Unfortunately, the present poor excuse for a US government doesn't understand that, either -- especially the inhabitant of the WH.

Its sad it must come to events like this for people to finally get it. we can't be silent anymore about the evils that lurk in our own homes and in the hearts of family and friends. if they wish to stand in the light we must PUSH them into it. we must confront these people who believe they are "superior" and that their inborn privilege is being tread upon.

I think it was a brave decision by this family. And for those that are saying that what this father/family did was wrong, know one but them know if they made other attempts to get through to him. Why would you want to allow someone to influence others in the family with their hate filled message? The father said that this is not how he was raised, so the son knew that his behavior and beliefs would not be the same as his family and therefore he obviously did not care about any consequence's. The son was in local news stories and why should the family have to be looked down upon by their community over their sons beliefs that they don't share.

The old thinking that " Your Children are a Reflection of You as Parents" no longer applies. When a person reaches the legal age (it varies from country to country, mostly 18 years of age), the person in question is no longer the parent's responsibility. You are then responsible for your own actions be they good or bad.

The very worst thing his father could do. These people spur from abandoment. Can't you finally understand that? They feel abandoned, unwanted, unappreciated, less worthy. And only THEN comes Trump, KKK, and all those right-wing scumbags, as those who "understand", who "appreciate, "value", and "respect". By disowning him, his father basically did two things - backed off of any responsibility for the past, and lost the chance to make a real impact in the future.

Well, I do not know, if white people are murdered in South Africa, but their life there is pretty difficult... There can be only some percentage of white people at university, some percentage of white people at olympic team etc, etc... And I can not see anything violent on video from Peter and he only claims, that he do not want some statue to be removed... Neo-nazis are bad, yes, no doubt about it... But where is the proof of his guilt? Why is his father so overreacting, because he walk with those people? In LGBT march, there are heterosexuals too and they do not become homosexuals, if they share only some opinions...

No. Being gay or LBTQ is what you are, it's part of your genetic make up. You can't change it because it's simply you. Being a vile racist is something you choose to be. A decision you make, and one that you could decide to change because it's just a choice. Disowning someone because they choose to hate and have brought that hate on others is NOT the same as disowning someone because their sexual preference differs from yours.

Hate is wrong. Racism is wrong. But while we're all focused on this, what else is going on that governments don't want our focus on?

I feel very sorry for Mr. Tefft and his family. It is a sorrowful thing to have to renounce a child. He did the right thing, but the sorrow will last forever. I doubt his son will come to his senses any time soon.

Why are so few concerned with the fact that a family is being torn apart here? It is a lot easier to throw something away than to fix it. I personally think this cannot be the best solution to change anything for the better.

I ask you this if you where ill or a member of your family was (dying) and someone offered you a kidney a lung or a hart and you found out they where black would you refuse it? No one not anyone as the right too treat another human being like this no one!! Shame on anyone who dose!! Has for this president Trump he and he alone needs too sort this out!!

I don't see him disowning his son. He speaks out strongly against the path his son has chosen, but he never refers to him as anything but his son, and says he even prays he will come back. That's not disowning.

The old thinking that " Your Children are a Reflection of You as Parents" no longer applies. When a person reaches the legal age (it varies from country to country, mostly 18 years of age), the person in question is no longer the parent's responsibility. You are then responsible for your own actions be they good or bad.

I like the statues. Someone did a very good job sculpting horses. The Neo-Nazis are just plain idiots, and the man they profess to revere was an insane drug addict. Good for Dad. The white supremists are looking for the Rabbit's Hole so they can live in their own little world.

The problem with being a Fascist is that, sure, it's fun sticking people you don't like into an oven, until you become a nuisance or burden to someone else and they denounce you and then you end up in an oven yourself. That's how these kind of organisations work.

i think this is sad , really sad, if this young man didn't grow in a house with those ideals and it was indoctrinated in to nazi ideology as an adult, is just sad, and nazis should be call for what they are domestic terrorism. USA is not a country of white people stop preaching that lie, white people are immigrants in this land where native and Mexicans were here first native because they are the original indigenous people of america and Mexicans because they were living here in states that were taken from mexico.

I as well support the dad. He told it like it is. I as a father would do the same. However, both groups are wrong. Bringing down the statues of history is an ISiS thing. Regardless of what the statues stand for.It is important that the generations that follow know the good and the bad of our past.

Lets see the son makes a joke about "us fascists" and the lib father doesnt take this kid out to the woodshed or how about taking him by the ear to the nearest computer and show him images of Musollinis atrocities and say thats what fascists produce.. or if he is so appalled why didnt he say something when his kid uttered that "joke" This guy and family did what libs do . Which is dont do anything to prevent something nooo say how outraged you are after it happens. i.e. illegal immigration = MS-13

I think that is just what the father has done. Read the father's statement. He offers the son comfort and a return to the family but only after the son renounces his hateful and hurtful ways. I feel sorry for the family and can only hope the son finds his way home.

I suppose unless his son was trying to indoctrinate relatives at gatherings, I think it's weird that his father disowned him and weird that he made this public. I suppose he's tried to talk with him on multiple occasions so what do I know? but alienating him is only going to push him into the arms of the crazies.

In response to Iva. I am a white South African male and you are correct in saying that it is difficult here. I was told once that a job vacancy in one of our leading insurance companies could only be filled by a black, disabled, south african born woman... We call this BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) but really it is just reverse apartheid. All that said, I am not sure what it has to do with “pro-White activist” in the USA...
