French Journalist Parodies High Fashion By Showing How Average Women Would Look As Models

How does it feel like to be in a high fashion photo shoot? French fashion stylist Nathalie Croquet decided to find out by putting herself in front of the camera. Along with Photographer Daniel Schweizer, she recreated photos that had previously featured the likes of Kate Moss, Edie Campbell, and others.

As for the meaning behind Croquet’s work? “Women, consumption, retouching, cosmetics, aging, beauty, those all come to mind, but truly those issues are up for debate,” she told Buzzfeed. “I feel people need a more spiritual approach to life, and good fun,” she said. “I’m happy to give them that, even if I’m just making fun of myself.”

On the other hand I think she did a really good job. In some ways I think she exuded more sensuality than the models - whatever one might think about her age/looks. Brava!

Her shots are still pretty good I think! The main difference between the shots are simply: - she is a bit bigger - make up is less good - way less airbrushing / photoshop I'm not sure it proves any point, but fun to see!

i think it would have been neat for there to be a third photo, where she is photoshopped a bit more like the models, to sort of shine light on the fact that even the models are not as flawless as their images.

hilarious! it makes you rethink these ads and how ridiculous they look, even with the models. and some "high fashion" ads look like you're homeless (ie. Lanvin, Sonia Rykiel).

I've often pondered whether designers actually think their clothes are wearable fashion instead of just an art form. This article is a parody because it shows us that despite the beauty of the professional canvas, the rest of us, whether inherently beautiful or not, can not pull these looks off outside of a studio. It is not about reassuring Nathalie of her own beauty, or disparaging it.

What is the point of stuff like this? It's rampant and also silly. It feels like an attempt to fish for compliments or validation. No, your photos aren't as attractive as those of a super model with a professional production team. Move on.

I think this emphasizes the point that a lot of "high fashion" doesn't look good on anybody! In fact it can look downright silly! I'm sure there are far more ordinary women reading these magazines than model-types, who would rather see "average" women wearing beautiful clothing, makeup, etc., that is actually, well.....wearable!

This is B.S. . This is not a "average women vs model" staged shoot, it's a "older women vs younger women" staged shoot. I hate misrepresentation in anything. I could pick "average women" in the same age group as the models and they wouldn't look so different. Also...not everyone looks good in the same outfits. They may as well have dressed the women on the left in men's work clothes.

Average try ugly... Some women aren't attractive that's a fact and I'm tired of people trying to say everyone is beautiful. Heck I'm not but I make it up by being nice, smart and fun. Do what works for you but don't try to convince the world everyone is beautiful because it's a simple fact that some people are better looking than others.

Would you buy the items if they were sold and modeled by "normal" people with no airbrushing or touch-ups what so ever. I think i would it's gives a more realistic impression of what the items will/would look like on "normal" people i'm a size 38" uk male size and when you look at the clothes in the stores and adds they are on men that are super fit with 6packs not very realistic when i look around they is not many people looking like that it's the same as the women's the average size in the UK is a size 16 and the adds and things show women at a size 8 and under totally unrealistic. so i say good on her for showing that what you see in the ads is not necessarily what things look like on "normal" people. Now if you are wondering why i was using the " " every time i put normal is because what is normal we are all different in our own unique way and we should love ourselves no matter what you look like

i think the "average woman" nails pretty much all of the shots. she's showing she can be as intense and versatile as a "real" model - whatever this is supposed to mean. there's just one look i don't quite like but still, i don't like the original one with the model either.

Reading most of the comments here, I am saying the same thoughts, the woman on the left actually looks better, and to me, as a 49 year old, sells the clothes better, than the other photos and model. She has not only just as much beauty, but also exudes the grace and wisdom and real sex appeal that comes from real living, the good and the bad in life. She seriously does all of the clothes a world of good. Brava.

Don't see the journalist as silly in the photos, so not sure that a point is being made. Most of them would fit right into a photography collection. Reading some of the comments, I don't think people really get fashion. These shoots aren't literal representations of life. They are meant to be artistic. They are meant to tell a story and transport the viewer in a fantasy. I actually think they are inspiring. I don't cry, envying body parts; instead I think about things I could do with my personal style. Slender models are often chosen because they want you to notice the clothes first, not the curves. Kate Moss can get away with low cut/braless because she has a small chest (and that doesn't make her any less of a woman btw). Models with nice skin are often chosen because airbrushing takes time & money. I'm not denying photo editing exists, but let's get real, there are women who are naturally slender/have nice skin. Let's stop crucifying Kate Moss already and start accepting ourselves.

The difference is that the young, beautiful women look better because they are better looking. That doesn't mean the other woman is worthless or utterly without appeal, but young, beautiful women are young beautiful women. I really don't get this kind of thing.

Do you really think all of those models are that beautiful? Airbrushing aside some of them are very gaunt and strong featured--the camera may like them but often they are not the 'prettiest'. (Worked in a model agency years ago.)

People who follow fashion aspire to certain 'looks' that advertisers project, be it clothing, make-up, furnishings, etc. The results are not always exact but pretty near spot-on. In this case this exercise was almost perfect - almost everyone out there dos not have the physique of a model.

same woman used for most of the pictures. For me the 'average' woman looked better in most of the pictures. This also reminds us of what happens to high fashion when it tries to reach the common woman. I am more impressed with people who can show others their strong points, as well as how to bring them center stage.

What this highlights, to me, is how incredibly stupid, artificial and unrealistic (and therefore utterly pointless) the vast majority of "poses" and situations models are put in to sell commodities are. We don't see men in the same ridiculous objectified set ups. No normal woman is ever likely to be in these situations and this is what Mme Croquet is highlighting to such great effect. Even the makeup P.Cruz is wearing is over the top and only appropriate for a photo shoot. And what the heck is Acne Studios trying to sell? She looks like she has a toilet seat over her head!

She did an amazing job matching the two. However I don't really agree with the title.. an 'average women.' Models are just as normal or average as the rest of us, they simply fit a brief given by a company/photographer. I have many friends who work as models, and they would agree they're nothing extraordinary that sets them part from the rest of society. Either way, this post is an interesting concept, Beth Find me on Bloglovin'

um, 35 plus women form a large segment of the population. They wear clothes too just like younger women do. Most 20 year old girls are still bland and spotty and very much identikit, like a school of fish. Character comes later

Move on.

I love this so much! She was in no way mocking the models, she was simply showing what it would look like with a real woman..... and honestly, she looks great herself! I enjoy the fact that they didn't over airbrush her images in photoshop, because they could have easily made her look like the model, which wasn't the point. Well done!!

She really sells the looks! One might say she's doing fashion a favor by showing that it does make people look interesting and unique when they try to adopt a certain style. She makes it less intimidating

this proves just how much confidence can influence one's visage, in some photos she looks better than the models by showing more substance than just being merely pretty :) cheers for such a fantastic job!

I think for some of them the regular women still look comparable stellar. The LancΓ΄me, Paula Ka and Isabel Myrant actually seem really wearable.

it was really so very "not that interesting", but I hope she had a good time dressing up :)

Just as fab and sending the same "cool", "casual"/"elegant" vibe as the originals. She actually did a stand up job. If she think her pics are parody she's silly. She looks just as good. It's a matter of self esteem I guess. It's not improbable to feel just as good and be just as pretty as the model, no matter age, make up quality or size

Hilarious! Clearly being a model means looking as bored as you can and Doug something weird with your hands. Loved it!

I think she looks really awesome in all these photos, and the pink hair really suited her! :)

Average women? 'Nice' way to put it. Last time I checked, models weren't wonder women.

How is she truly considered 'average'? Not all 'average' people look like her. LOL I know I dont. but I suppose I'm 'average' clearly not a model either but even models are 'average'. what gives?

Some a photographs actually do look really cool... If her aim was to show how average these women look, she has failed... I think they look much better than average. Very cool project

She looks wonderful; way more attractive than the women she is parodying...

It's an awesome idea, and a great job done by this lady, though articles like these are getting really, really, boring and mainstream.

Everything goes . In this session. between caricature and publisexism . To be able to have some impact. There's the need of caricature. But it shows the essence noneles

Besides the pink one, I think all her pictures came out way cooler than the professional models.

I think she did a great job in catching the essence of every picture! Must say a few of them are more interesting, with her in the picture. Like the Paule Ka one!

Everybody can be a model, it will depend on what you as photographer, or whatever, want to show.

I think the only thing you truly understand after seeing this stuff is why some women are models, and why other women, like this, can never be.

I think this should be renamed as "French Journalist Parodies High Fashion By Showing How "OLD" Women Would Look As Models"

Some ads gets more believable with the other model, because how can some of the young girls afford some of the stuff ;)

But she doesn't look average. She looks 35+ and the models are 20. Put an average 20 year old alot of girls are good looking and not models. They chosed an ugly girl with ugly features

um, 35 plus women form a large segment of the population. They wear clothes too just like younger women do. Most 20 year old girls are still bland and spotty and very much identikit, like a school of fish. Character comes later

She is not an "average woman", she is not attractive, and models are models because they are attractive. and I hate all this pretentious French sh*t

Why couldn't they have done this with a woman that is at least a little attractive? Blech.
