Do you know what, for example, Macaulay Culkin, Britney Spears, Galileo Galilei and maybe Antonio Salieri have in common? There is one unobvious detail that unites them all. At different times, tons of public condemnation fell upon these people, literally reaching hatred - although in reality, none of them, of course, deserved such feelings at all.

Nevertheless, it is obvious that society needs not only role models, but also targets for negativity, and it does not matter where this negativity is poured out - in the marketplaces of the Middle Ages, in the aristocratic salons of the 19th century, or in Reddit threads. And, unfortunately, history knows a lot of such people who completely undeservedly received mass hatred.

30 Famous People Who Received Public Condemnation Even Though They Did Not Deserve It, As Pointed Out In This Online Thread Brendan Fraser, after the trailer for The Whale was released the fat acceptance movement had a go at him. Fat activists went on and on about how fatphobic it supposedly was that he was wearing a fat suit instead of gaining the weight for the role. They tried to "cancel" the movie and said that as he was a "small fat" he shouldn't have played a role that was made for a "super fat" actor. The way I see it, Brendan Fraser is one of the few unproblematic celebrities who got the opportunity to make a come back after years of not acting, he made this comeback after being open about being a victim of abuse, and he doesn't deserve to be welcome with more hate and more abuse, especially from people who could make the choice to change themselves instead of moaning a out everyone who happens to be slimmer than them.

As someone who would certainly qualify as super fat, I wouldn't want anyone to gain that kind of weight to play a part. It is literally hazardous to our health. Brendan Fraser would have a great deal to draw on for the character in regards to size, being a larger person in Hollywood and with his own health issues.

I am fat myself and I have never understood these fat acceptance activists. No one deserves to be made fun of for their weight, but being overweight is something that can be fixed. Unless, you have some sort of medical condition that stops you from losing weight. Either way, shaming an actor that has already been through so much sounds absolutely ridiculous.

Yes. This. I am fat, am struggling currently (without success) and would NEVER say that the answer is to just love the fat you and accept it and expect everyone else to get on board.

Definitely backhanded. Down vote me. Idgaf. Pandas are extremely judgemental. It isn't anything new to me to expect this reaction on this topic. "This is getting ridiculous" has me believe fat obese ppl. shouldn't be able to find peace with themselves because you deem it unhealthy, regardless what you actually know of the person. Idk how y'all can be so sure there's no way to be healthy and big. We seriously all have such personal experiences and different bodily reactions. There are constant accounts of the longest living person doing this and that all their life. Yea, it can happen.

Brendan Fraser is such a great person and he deserves everything good that's happening. I'm fat and I see nothing wrong with it. Where was the uproar for Thor? He didn't really put on weight. Colin Farrell was the penguin too, not a fat guy.

Believe it or not, there was an uproar similar to the one for The Whale, for both Thor and Penguin. They were just drowned out by more sensible people, plus those movies weren't awards darlings, with the attention on it that comes with.

So, they’d rather he either put his heart at risk or give the role to a person who is genuinely/seriously obese (& possibly put THEIR health at risk too, due to the workload being a potential strain on an unhealthy heart & body in general)?? That makes NO sense! 😑🤦‍♀️

That is Exactly what they want; for movie makers to hire those that already live like the character they're hired to act out. I have not read a single complaint that doesn't describe that very mentality. It wouldn't be "acting" then. Baffles the daylights out of me.

The story that I had heard and believed for years was that some woman burnt her tongue a little and sued McDonald's for not marking clearly that their coffee was hot. When the reality was that McDonald's raised the temperature of their coffee way higher than normal, it spilled on her when getting it in the drive through, and her burns were horrifically severe and she needed skin grafts. She was suing for so much because it literally how much her medical bills cost. But so many people ridiculed her and the case for years. Edit: people calling me out for saying "higher than boiling point". I just meant that it was really REALLY hot.

We actually studied this case in my business law class. If I remember correctly, her burns were basically to the bone. And most of the money she was awarded was due to 'punitive damages'. Simply put, the cost of her medical bills (which is all she wanted covered) was negligible to a company like McDonalds. Punitive damages are awarded specifically to make it so costly being sued that the company would rather change their practices (even if it costs profits) than risk being sued. Much of that money was later revoked, though, due to her being found partially responsible.

Just a bit more info. The jury awarded her so much in punitive damages because McDonald's had hundreds of other lawsuits for the same problem which they ignored. Her award was 3 days of coffee profits from all of the McDonald's stores. Although she did deserve this amount, it was appealed and I don't believe she even got a million dollars. There was a documentary on it.

For redditors old enough to remember, the young *Home Alone* star got a bunch of hate for being a spoiled brat when he sued to divorce his parents. On the whole, perhaps, in human history, there is not a single more or less well-known personality who was always, absolutely, one hundred percent received positively. Even, for example, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa or Pope John Paul II - all of them, at certain stages of their lives, sometimes faced massive disapproval from certain social groups.

But there are people about whom the public steadily formed an attitude - and this attitude just as steadily turned negative. For example, the famous composer Antonio Salieri was innocently harmed by a completely false and far-fetched accusation that he had poisoned his longtime friend Mozart. Well, or at least weaved vile intrigues against a brilliant colleague.

In reality, of course, it wasn't like that. As a twist of fate, during his lifetime, Salieri was much more successful than Mozart. And the talent of the Italian composer was also more than outstanding. And, by the way, it was Salieri who helped Mozart more than once in arranging his concerts and finding customers for musical works.

30 Famous People Who Received Public Condemnation Even Though They Did Not Deserve It, As Pointed Out In This Online Thread Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis He was a Hungarian physician and scientist, described as the "saviour of mothers". He proposed the practice of washing hands with chlorinated lime solutions in 1847 while working in Vienna General Hospital's First Obstetrical Clinic, where doctors' wards had three times the mortality of midwives' wards. Some doctors were offended at the suggestion that they should wash their hands and mocked him for it. In 1865 he allegedly suffered a nervous breakdown and was committed to an asylum by his colleagues. In the asylum he was beaten by the guards. He died 14 days later from a gangrenous wound on his right hand that may have been caused by the beating. His findings earned widespread acceptance only years after his death, when Louis Pasteur confirmed the germ theory.

Why is this happening? In fact, discrediting someone's good name is quite simple - both in the old days and today. Fact-checking has never been the forte of most people, and we readily believe in various gossip, no matter how dirty it may seem. In addition, we often do not know all aspects of celebs' life, as well as the reasons that encourage them to commit one act or another, which seems completely unsightly to us from the outside.

Keanu Reeves is a great example of an AH changing for the better. He was a nasty condescending idiot, but he turned it around and became a very likeable person. Back then he deserved every bit of nasty backlash. He was condescending about his friends, going back on promises, making negative comments about the fans of earlier movies and ruined several roles by unreasonable demands. I still don't forgive him for what he did to Constantine. But that's past. He's great now and such a huge personal development deserves recognition.

Hasn't she converted to Islam now? I do find that kind of ironic considering her image with the shaved head etc was an assertion against traditional views of women... not saying that Islam is bad of course (hijab is beautiful too!), but traditionally and on the whole they do expect more modesty and such from their women, so it seems a bit like a huge step from her initial image xP ... Fantastic voice though. x3

Wow you re painting Islam with a broad brush based on stereotypes. Plenty of Islamic women do not wear any head covering and wear modern European style clothes. And Sinead shaved her head to make herself less feminine and head off the sexual harassment in the music industry.

30 Famous People Who Received Public Condemnation Even Though They Did Not Deserve It, As Pointed Out In This Online Thread Honestly: Britney Spears. The way we treated her after the breakdown is downright sad. The fact that more people don't crack under the pressure she was going through baffles me; imagine your life is televised almost 24/7 and you couldn't even feel sure that you had privacy in your own home. Not even gonna get into the conservatorship. We really did her dirty. Regardless of what you think about the music, she deserved and deserves to be treated with more respect than she got.

I 100% believe that the way she was treated when she was going through a mental crisis exacerbated her condition, causing the conservatorship, which caused her mental state to decline, and so on. It was a horrific snowball effect, and I hate that she was cheated of the normal life that she deserved.

I'm embarrassed to say, I had little sympathy for her back in the day. Until one day (before the conservatorship) I saw footage of her crying, sat on a curb of a pavement. Clearly very distraught, surrounded by Paps snapping shots of her. That's the moment that changed my attitude. I thought 'she's a person that needs a hug and some support' and instead they just took photos of her distress to sell papers. It made me sick.

It's a pretty well believed theory that she got pregnant because Dan Schneider, writer for Zoey 101, creator of ICarly, and many other Nick shows back in the day, Sexually assaulted her, along with many many other teen actresses. Dude also had a huge love for feet and if you look at all the shows he wrote for or created its disturbing how much he had young actresses do suggestive things with their feet in episodes

Look, unpopular opinion coming in, but I firmly believe that if her father hadn't stepped up, Britney would have been dead years ago. The conservatorship, however, went on too long & wasn't properly enforced. But what people don't remember is that Britney's former manager & her own cousin were keeping Britney's prescription medication away & feeding her all sorts of drugs to keep her quiet & compliant while they spent her money.

"In the old days, of course, it was much easier to discredit the image of any person - after all, information, already incredibly scarce, was almost always transmitted verbally, and at the same time inevitably distorted," says Valery Bolgan, historian and editor-in-chief of the Ukraine-based Intent news agency. "People's rumors spread very quickly, and people had neither the opportunity nor the desire to verify the accuracy of the information."

"Today we are, however, at the other extreme - there is a huge amount of information around us, and we are faced with a lot of fakes and partial fakes, created both by someone's order and out of ignorance. In addition, the authority of leaders of both the mass media and public opinion is gradually falling. It is enough to convict some source of lying at least once for its information to be regularly called into question. In such a situation, it is not surprising that many people are prone to self-deception," Valery Bolgan concludes.

There was no "coercion". Monica Lewinsky was a consenting adult. There was wrong on both sides - no victims, no innocents. The people who really suffered were the American people who almost lost a good president because this was used as a political ploy by Republicans who wasted 40 million taxpayer dollars, on an "investigation", despite never ever, having themselves produced a comparable - or better president than President Bill Clinton. Donald Trump is far, far worse and a criminal.

It is sad that young celebrities often become targets for public censure, although their actions are de facto controlled either by their parents or other members of their environment. From Shirley Temple to Macaulay Culkin, from Mickey Rooney to Rebecca Black, just about everyone who achieved big fame at an early age went through it, and not everyone managed to cope with such pressure. Perhaps Shirley Temple did it best of all - but she had to completely change her occupation, leaving Hollywood for big politics.

In some situations, doing nothing is exactly the right policy, and it can take great skill to pull off. For instance, when the Soviet Union was collapsing, George H. W. Bush had to make sure that the US did nothing to interfere because that would have given powerful ammunition to the hardliners in the Kremlin. After decades of trying to undermine its global opponent, it took great skill to pull back and go into freeze mode.

She is the perfect actress for the role. Most importantly, she's really good at her job. Second, she looks perfect for the role. Ellie was voice acted and motion captured by Ashley Johnson in the video game. Ashley was Mel Gibson's daughter in "What Women Want". If you put a photo of Ashley from that movie when she was the same age as Ellie and Bella, they are doppelgangers.

People didn't see that she was just a teenager who wanted to make the Earth a better place and had the courage to take some action. She's not the only kid who's spoken publicly on environmental matters. What really grossed me out was the way she was treated in Canada. She came to speak. A local news vulture found the hotel she was staying in and harassed her as she was trying to get to her room. He kept accusing her of creating some sort of conflict of interest, or conspiracy, just because Canada was in the middle of elections with talks about environmental issues, and he kept asking her why she was in Canada in the middle of elections.

Agreed. And some of the ill-informed complaints about her were upsettingly sexual. There's one t-shirt design I saw that would make any sensible person vomit. It was misogyinistic, ad hominem, and -- considering her age -- downright gross and criminal.

If read read the comments critical notes are not welcomed. However I'm going to risk a down vote by saying yes she raised awareness which is good but I still think her behavior is produced and maketed by her parents stimulating her unstead of her own opinions. Plus the, 1%, parents' behavior and possessions aren't in-line with the ideals she is preaching.

Greta earned her voice, because she simply chose to use it. Most people, myself included, wouldn't even dream of doing something like this at the age she started. Clearly had fantastic and honest parents who gave her access to a very good education and she got hold of resources to back up every single thing she has ever said. Knowledge, really is, power.

Galileo was forced by the Catholic church at the time to deny his theories because they were against the doctrine that God put the man as the center of the universe, hence the Heart, being the planet of human kind had to be the center of universe, and all the planets and the sun had to rotate around it (geocentric model, tolemaic system). Galilei (according to Copernicus discover ) said instead that the centre was the sun with all the planet rotating around (heliocentric model, Copernican System). The church then basically bullied him to deny his theories or he would have been killed as heretic. An anecdote said that after he denied his theories in front of the church council he said under his breath "eppur si muove" (nevertheless it moves), to highlighting the fact that he still believed in his theories and the abjuration was forced in order to survive. (Edit: incorrect translation)

I was just reading about his case. Part of the reason behind his condemnation was because he LOVED proving himself the smartest person in the room. He was fairly vicious with his criticism of theories that did not align with his...theories that had become part of the Christian faith. He made enemies and even made enemies of former supporters such as the Jesuits. He was friends with Pope Urban (#?) who felt Galileo had betrayed him and gave him a lifetime house arrest sentence.

Most history claims Galileo was punished by the church for contradicting Earth Centric theories. Actually, he was punished for angering people in power for other reasons, and the church was used as a tool to punish him. The church had in fact accepted that the Earth revolved around the Sun long before this happened. They just had not yet changed their 'official' laws. As has happened many times before and since people in power used arcane legal processes to punish those they do not like.

He was bullied severely in high school for being skinny. He was also sexually abused as a child, so he wrote about his feelings. He was addicted to several drugs before he even turned 17. He did so much for his fans like even with a broken hand he continued to perform, but then the band changed genres went a little less heavy more softer instruments, but the lyrics were just as deep. The loudest fans didn't care they hated it. They bullied the band intensely. In 2006, Chester had a cyberstalker who wouldn't leave him or his family alone, the reasoning she gave when she got caught? The day he killed himself, I just felt so incredibly sorry for his children. My dad did the same thing as it has always been a heavy burden on my heart. Like if your parent dies from a cause not under their control, that's one thing. But to commit suicide... man... look, I am heading on 40 and my dad did this when I was 9. I STILL will find myself shedding a tear for missing my dad. No amount of counselling will ever heal that wound.

I remember watching an episode of never mind the buzzcocks with her on a panel. At first, she came across as very intelligent and funny but as the show went on it was clear she was drinking on set. All the other panelists found this hilarious, and pushed her to drink more and do more crazy things. They were all men (some of which I usually like) who were a lot older than her - some old enough to be her father. It was before the big public addiction thing came out. I didn't see the end, because I had to stop watching. The whole thing seemed abusive and not remotely funny. I wanted to cry for her. I hope they felt ashamed.

She was a scapegoat. Whatever she did was criticized and slandered. If she bought jewellery and new clothes she was accused of wasting money, when she posed for a portrait in simple clothing she was accused of not caring for french craftsmanship and denying the royal tailors a wage. She was the symbol of royal depravity and everything she did was used to fire the rebellion despite her having next to none influence. When she didn't get kids because her husband didn't know how to duck her, she was blamed. Having girls, blamed for that too, having a boy, still not enough. And she was so young! Her husband too. They were almost still children.

Empress Maria Theresia brought up all her children to be humble and kind, including her baby daughter Toni (aka Marie Antoinette), and would never have tolerated the arrogance in her that was ascribed to her by history. BTW her son and successor Joseph II, and older brother to Marie Antoinette, the most enlightened monarch in European history, was equally mis-represented by history and again in the movie Amadeus.

The list of bullied Star Wars actors is miles long. From the top of my head: Ahmed Best, Kelly Marie Tran, John Boyega, Moses Ingram, Daisy Ridley. It's also not a coincidence most of them are women and/or people of color. Star Wars fandom is awful and I say that as a MASSIVE Star Wars fan.

Surely people can separate the actor from the character? After all, they’re prisoners to the script. I hate the Jar Jar Binks character but that doesn’t extend to the actor playing him because that would just be stupid and more than a little weird.

The dark side of Kpop and Korea that many fans/koreaboo's ignore. A good chunk of Koreans are OBSESSED with their beauty standards (often hypocritically so to be brutally honest). Bullying is rife in their media and in their schools. Things are slowly getting better, but it's very slow progress, and you still see a lot of bullying, and a lot of sexism in some areas. :(

yes-the bullying especially. I watched a documentary about several cases of bullying in Korea-for example, one boy was lit on fire on his birthday by people he thought were his friends. he survived, with extensive injuries. one girl was beaten within an inch of her life because she picked up the phone and the caller was another girl's boyfriend. kids are monsters sometimes.

Korean beauty standards... oh.. my gawd... I remember berating myself internally as a high school teen for being so bitter about the 'pretty korean girls' (because yeah... all the ones I saw were freakin' so. uber-perfect... and I took Tae Kwon Do... so... I saw more than a few...)... and then in University a friend (international student, from Korea) told me the **INSANITY** and how much WORSE it is in Korea... like... they're all perfect, but in the **SAME WAY**... like the same damn surgeon worked on all of them... they all ensure to wake up HOURS before everyone in the household so they can 'prep' to be observed by others... uuuuuugh.... okay, not jealous anymore.

More sympathy to his estranged wife, who ended up murdered for supporting him. In light of what we know about Arbuckle, is it impossible to believe a couple of people lied for him? Or paid people off to change their stories? A nurse who testified that her bruising proved she had been raped later retracted by saying her bruises may have been caused by wearing heavy jewelry. WTF? Witnesses at the party claimed she was found in wild convulsions, ripping her own clothing to shreds. Really? Arbuckle's defense singled out the woman on the jury as being a woman, so therefore prone to hysteria. Jurors were "bullied" and "threatened" into voting not guilty. The victim was accused of being promiscuous. A maid said Arbuckle's fingerprints showing his hand pressing the victim's to the door (suggesting he prevented her from escaping) couldn't be real because she cleaned the room; she appeared to have somehow gotten the investigator to believe her over his own eyes.

He was arrested and spent 3 weeks in jail. Arbuckle took the stand in his own defense, and the jurors voted 10-2 for acquittal. When the prosecution tried him a second time, the jury deadlocked again. It wasn’t until the third trial, in March of 1922, that Arbuckle allowed his attorneys to call the witnesses who had known Rappe to the stand (he'd refused before out of "respect for the dead") He had little choice; his funds were depleted—he would spend more than $700,000 on his defense—and his career was presumed to be dead. They testified that Rappe had suffered previous abdominal attacks; drank heavily and often disrobed at parties after doing so; was promiscuous, and had an illegitimate daughter. One of them also attacked Maude Delmont as “the complaining witness that never witnessed.”

On April 12, 1922, the jury acquitted Arbuckle of manslaughter after deliberating for just five minutes—four of which were used to prepare a statement: Acquittal is not enough for Roscoe Arbuckle. We feel that a great injustice has been done to him … there was not the slightest proof adduced to connect him in any way with the commission of a crime. He was manly throughout the case and told a straightforward story which we all believe. We wish him success and hope that the American people will take the judgment of fourteen men and women that Roscoe Arbuckle is entirely innocent and free from all blame.

But the "producer" posted it as many other videos on his youtube. That video became a meme, and she was bullied hard for literally playing.

Are you kidding me? Shame on the person who put Phelps on this list. This guy is a repeat offender of drunk driving and was once arrested in a town where I used to live. He damn near ran over a good friend of mine who was about to cross the street when she saw his vehicle coming down the road, somwhat erratically, and at a high rate of speed. Because of this, she chose to wait until he passed and this decision almost certainly saved her life as he ran right through the stop sign. Thankfully, police pulled him over soon after before he could kill himself or someone else. And he didn't learn a thing from this incident because he's gone on to do it again while hypocritically lecturing kids on the dangers of DUI. But, because he is who he is, he regularly gets away with a slap on the wrist. Phelps should not be on this list. He should not be celebrated. He should be in jail. *Edited for clarity

I'm not sure he was treated differently than the average American would have been for a 2nd DUI arrest 10 years after the first, but I'm not an expert on state DUI laws from 2014. I don't mean to minimize the dangers of drunk driving, but some of the comments make it sound even more egregious than twice in 10 years, once as a teenager. It doesn't seem hypocritical to me to lecture kids on the dangers, but a good thing to do if it even one kid listens? Again, I don't mean to diminish what he did either and I'm glad your friend is ok.

Hate Joffrey Baratheon, not Jack Gleeson. He really got hate for his character? That's dumb. Like someone throws a drink at him and they're like "That's for the King of the North!"

Yeah. A lot of soap opera actors get hate like this too.

He's absolutely amazing actor. So sad that some people can't tell the difference between the character he's playing and the actor himself

Heard that he took a hiatus due to the hate, but that he has returned doing some theater and a BBC series.

I absolutely loathed Joffrey Baratheon which is why Jack Gleeson was a phenomenal actor. If an actor can embody a character so well that you wish the most horrible death upon him, then that actor is boss level. Must respect and admiration for his craft.

They weren't told until after they had already signed the contracts and spent an advance from the record label on new clothes and hair extensions for their promo shoots that they wouldn't be singing on the album. They couldn't afford to pay back the advance so they said they would stick with the label until they made enough money to pay them back. When the lipsync scandal went down they got all the blame for it.

The rest of the story is they weren't rejected because they were caught lipsyncing. Many artists lipsync. It's the fact they were credited as the performers of the song and won the new artist Grammy in 1990. If anyone would've rejected the nomination, they would have been fine. But yes, the last sentence is true. They got all the blame for it.

Is he the chap who taught himself to read and write, then taught himself politics and the law? Pretty funny that the NRA lobbied FOR gun control when they realised that Hampton and his friends were exercising their legal right to carry guns. Reagan and the white gun people put a pretty quick stop to that...
