Single Dad Stands Up To His Family When They Try To Make His Son’s Birthday A Religious Event

Interview With Author
ADVERTISEMENT

Religion is one of the most powerful beliefs a person can hold, and that’s also what makes it such a terrifying weapon. The problem isn’t with being religious or following a certain belief system; the real issue lies with some believers who take things way too far.

A man on Reddit shared his experience dealing with his family, who all had very strong faith. He kept trying to draw boundaries with them every time they were preachy until, one day, they simply went too far, and he was done with all of it.

More info: Reddit

Guy is tired of religious family overtaking every function to spread their beliefs, forbids them from showing up to his son’s birthday after they ask whether they can preach during it

Single dad said that his family is heavily involved in the Christian church and that he finds it a chore to visit them since they only talk about religion

His mother secretly took his kids to a religious event and even spent his birthday making speeches and testifying about her religion, only when the guy intervened did she stop

The last straw was when they asked if they could preach at his son’s birthday party, he told them not to come if they were going to act like a congregation instead of a family

They did not respect his wishes and started berating him, saying that he should be ashamed of himself for denying the religion

Faith is extremely powerful for many people and can help them through some of life’s toughest moments. That’s why nearly 8 out of 10 people across the world identify as part of some religious group. That adds up to 5.8 billion of the world’s population. Out of all these believers, 32% are Christians. This explains why the poster’s entire family seemed to be so heavily invested in and influenced by the religion.

Roughly 1 in 6 people, or 16% of individuals worldwide, have no religious affiliation. Although the poster didn’t mention whether he was religious or not, he was completely against the idea of his family forcing their faith on him. He told commenters, “I actually went to her church a couple of times and have met very pleasant people that just asked if I liked the sermon and if I would like to hear a good word to attend anytime with no pressure. But, there are some that are so over the top that if you miss one day they believe you are committing [a] sin.”

Religion is important for believers because it helps them satisfy their basic desires of acceptance, curiosity, tranquility, and more. Research found that of all people’s desires, the need for independence might differentiate religious and non-religious people. Those with strong faith expressed more desire for interdependence, whereas non-believers tended to be more self-reliant. This is probably why the guy’s family kept pushing to share their faith with people and get them to join the church.

As the poster mentioned, his family is staunchly religious, and they have often tried to force their agenda onto him. Once, they sneakily took his kids to a religious event without informing him about it. His mother used his birthday party to make a big speech about her faith while her congregation passed around pamphlets. They planned to pull a similar stunt on his son’s birthday, but the dad was having none of it. When he stood up to them, they got angry with him instead.

Bored Panda contacted the author of the post, u/TheWizardry90, to learn more about his family’s religious background. He said: “I would like to start off by saying I’ve always had a very strained relationship with my mother. I was verbally and physically abused by her up until my early teens. My father was in and out of jail/prison because of her false accusations of physical abuse. About 3 years ago my mom was caught with narcotics and had to go through minor jail time and community service. The community service happened to be at a thrift store ran by the church she now attends.”

“As far as cutting my family off. I’m just focused on my immediate family (mom, sister and grandparents). I had surgery last year and was near death. When my mother came to visit, she stated ‘I strayed too far from God and he made me sick to make me look for him.’ My grandmother was also there and she was crying and talking so unintelligible that the nurses thought that I unexpectedly passed away. The only relationship I can salvage is my older sister’s relationship with myself. She is the only one that joined their church but has enough sense of what to do and what to say when it is necessary,” he added.

Image credits: Luis Quintero (not the actual photo)

The poster shared more about his family’s connection with him and his kids. He stated, “my children no longer want to be involved with my mother and any ‘family get-togethers’ she plans. Every time it is part family and part her church family. Last Thanksgiving we had to sit for over 30 minutes as each one of her church family members explained what they were thankful for and how God has blessed them. Before all of this it was a quick 2-3 minute prayer and we got to eat.”

This invasive and pushy behavior can cause problems in a relationship and even ruin family bonds over time. In some cases, people might face a lot of religious trauma due to stressful religious experiences. This could happen if their family is fanatical and goes to extreme lengths to spread their beliefs, not realizing that it can do more harm than good.

“I feel my mom has joined a cult and the few times I have been to her church they sing and praise for over an hour and a half and when the main pastor speaks he is only on stage for 5 minutes and leaves. The collection plate gets passed around plenty and he shows up with his family in 2-3 brand new Escalades,” the man added.

One religious leader mentioned, “sharing one’s faith means proposing it to others, not imposing it.” Unlike the man’s family, believers should understand that they can be strong in their faith while respecting other people’s boundaries. Though their actions may come from a desire to do good, they need to be respectful. Other religious folk state it’s important for people to question their faith and choose what they want to believe in rather than being forced into it.

The poster had learned his lesson from inviting his family to his party. He did not want his son’s party also to get ruined by them. Unfortunately, they did not once question their behavior despite getting banned from a kid’s birthday event. People could not stop discussing the rude behavior of the man’s relatives, and the viral post got 19k upvotes and over 2k comments. Very few people came out in support of the religious family. But let us know whose side you are on. Do you think the guy was right to stop his family from sharing their beliefs?

Netizens compared the guy’s family to a used-car salesman, but for religion, because of their unending persistence

Ugh. This is my extended family! People with whom I have very little contact because they too are religious extremists. I have no problem with anyone practicing their beliefs, as long as they respect my right to believe what I believe and practice. But when they step over the line, insisting that I go to church, pray their prayers, live by their rules...yeah, not going to accept that attitude. This is not about religion as much as it is about respect for the individual. Here the family members show no respect at all for your choices and your beliefs. Goodbye, there's the door....

With nuts like this, I like to point out that Pride is "one of the seven deadly sins" and why would "God" demand people go out and tell everyone how great he is? "Go out and tell everyone how great I am" is Prideful, so they are committing this "sin" on an abhorrent level

As a kid, I remember thinking there was no way I was ever going to be good enough to get in good with Jesus. He even knew the thoughts I had! There were so many mixed messages. I have a fridge magnet that says "Dear Jesus, please protect me from your followers." That's pretty much my attitude now, I just want to be left alone. I didn't need a couple of Mormon boys accosting me in my own driveway not too long ago, asking about my personal beliefs. They were lucky they didn't approach my husband, he tells all the God-mongers that he'll listen to what they have to say if they'll listen to him tell them all about his god, The Mighty Zeus!

This isn't about religion, it's about respect. When you are at someone's home or at their function, you respect their requests and boundaries. The quote Martin Payne from "Martin": "RESPECT MY HOUSE OR GET TO STEPPIN'!"

I'm definitely not comfortable preaching. I was an atheist most of my life, and it wasn't this nonsense that caused the change. In fact, it made me dig my heels in. How is some fool getting in your face going to make you want to hear what they have to say? It's only words until the person lives it. Living it includes respect for others. I (sometimes) try my best to live the way I say I believe. Isn't that testimony enough?

"Zeal of the convert". They got involved in the church just 2 years ago and now they want to make it their whole personality compared to the regulars who just ask if you like the sermon or not. I'm guessing the death of OP's father (he's apparently not involved and would be even more hounded by the family if he was alive) spurred this change.

Nah they’re stepping way over his boundary line and acting like they don’t need his permission because they have GODS. I would consider myself a Christian tho I don’t often get to services, and people like this are ruining the church and the good it does. They manipulate people in need by withholding help unless they will be willing to endure being preached at or attending church. They turn everything into a conversation about their beliefs. They are incredibly selfish and self righteous and are literally contributing to atheism more than the devil himself. If people ask about any religion it’s fine to share your beliefs with them but to literally know they don’t want any part of it and find it draining and STILL pummel them with it every chance you get is so toxic and frustrating.

Pop along to the local Temple or Mosque and gather up a few pamphlets. At the next family gathering greet them with either a cheerful Shalom! or Allah Akbar! as appropriate and as they start to fizzle say "What? Wrong God? Sorrrreeeee!"

Anytime someone has tried to shove their beliefs down my throat, I've told them, "I'll listen, but first, let me tell you about the glory of the Flying Spaghetti Monster!" then start to recite the book of Genesis as though it happened in an Italian restaurant. "In the beginning, there was flour."

Depending on the age of this guys kids, He should invite his family over And then invite as many satanists as possible. Maybe set up some makeshift "sancturary" or something, and play the most outrageous metal songs one can find. AMD THEN talk to them how he found his lord saviour and his faith, with pamphlets of course...

My Aunt and one of our older cousins became born again Christian in the same 2 year period. My cousin would mention church and answer questions if asked but otherwise was quiet about it. When my Aunt became born again, it was a different story. She didn't preach at family functions, people told her off, but her voice carried whenever anyone ask what she had been up to. Years of 'Harry Potter is demonic' and judging people for 'not being a good Christian' or having to hear 'discussions' between her and my 'Mormon' relatives. SMH It was a lot!

NTA, go No Contact. As someone raised in a religious family on my mother's side, I've met folks very much like OP's family. People who have no idea that their method of "outreach" is a huge turn off or red flag to even their own congregation members, let alone strangers. These people are zealots, and best avoided.

In the end, the truth about people is revealed in their behavior. They may claim to be "Christians", but clearly their behavior, entirely lacking any graciousness or fruit of the spirit displays a disturbing lack of consideration and humility. Makes me think their faith is fake and nothing I would admire or want for myself. That's exactly what I would tell them. That their example up to this point makes God look about as attractive as a case of poison ivy. I'd say, "Why would I want to know anything about your "god" or participate in your faith if it make you such an intolerable ah?" If you are an example of what this does to you, I'll take a pass.

NTA. Cut them off. I know this might not be the least controversial opinion, but ... I'd defend addicts, because that doesn't make them bad people, and, likely, would oppose cutting someone off for that reason ALONE. But ... religious extremism takes more out of people, strips more of the actual people from the remaining shell, that is then filled with prethought stuff from their church, and an insufferable need to preach anywhere and everywhere. I'd defend idiots, knuckleheads of various types ... but, I still think drügs are less dangerous than gods. Because, it's just a molecule in one case, a complete system of thinking in the other. While, physically, religion doesn't directly affect or damage brain, and drügs to the latter often, the first always, it, for sure, has less impact on actual personality - it may numb them, but it can't offer an identity, including it can't offer an insufferable one. At least, they don't rebrand humanism as christian, ...

As a Christian myself I can't stand when people do this. it makes me look bad, it makes god look bad and it makes people think all of us are like this

I would invite my guests a half hour early, warn them, then outfit them one and all with Roman collars and fake bibles. Drown the offending family members with "holy water" and watch their reactions. 😂😂

Why do people like this think they're bringing people to god? They're more likely to drive them away from any religious faith at all!

Cuz they have never actually read their holy book, like the majority of any cult/religious followers.

Pop along to the local Temple or Mosque and gather up a few pamphlets. At the next family gathering greet them with either a cheerful Shalom! or Allah Akbar! as appropriate and as they start to fizzle say "What? Wrong God? Sorrrreeeee!"

His family aren't behaving very Christian and definitely not acting in a way Jesus would have approved of. Good on him for putting his foot down, especially for his kids

I'm so glad this didn't happen when you yourself were a child. Their behaviour is very cult like. I'd be off. Those preachers are predators trying to exploit and extract money from their congregation. I'm glad I don't see this stuff where I'm from!

We mean religion. Your personal persecution complex is a “you” issue.
