Man’s Family Traumatizes His Wife With A “Break-In” Prank, He Cuts Them Off

At this point, we don’t need to tell you that relationships with people are tricky. Family ones aren’t an exception. There are many ways to improve or ruin these relationships and some of them can be fairly small.

Like a prank. The family we’re talking about today had their boat rocked, just because their son’s wife decided to play a prank on their 10-year-old. The family disliked this move so much that they decided to prank her themselves, but they went too far and made the son cut contact with them.

More info: Reddit

RELATED:

Before pranking someone, you should always think about what this joke might bring, and even then, you can’t always anticipate its consequences

One day, the author’s wife decided to prank his little sister by putting on a Krampus look-alike mask and scaring her

This infuriated the girl’s mom, as she didn’t like that the woman sneaked up on her while she was sleeping

So, she screamed at the woman that she was merely her son’s wife and not a ‘true’ family member

The original poster (OP) has a 10-year-old sister, Liv. She’s a shy, well-behaved kid, who gets sassy and outgoing with her close family members, but is more reserved with others. For example, the OP’s wife Zoe – they have a fine, but not close relationship.

What you should also know about the author’s sister is that she hates the movie “Krampus,” as it terrified her when she was little. It’s a Christmas comedy horror film about a boy unleashing the festive demon upon his family. Liv isn’t the first person to be scared by this movie; here on Reddit, another individual shared a similar experience.

Recently, the OP and his wife were staying over at his family’s place. The wife found a Halloween mask similar to how Krampus looks and decided it would be funny to prank her husband’s sister by waking her up wearing it.

The girl didn’t think it was funny. Her mom didn’t think so either – she barged into the room and threatened the woman that if she ever stepped into her sleeping daughter’s room again, they’d have problems. The woman tried explaining that it was a harmless prank and that she thought she was doing something similar to the girl’s dad.

Image credits: freepik / Freepik (not the actual photo)

This prompted the mom to tell her she wasn’t the girl’s family, and thus the prank wasn’t appropriate. This infuriated Zoe, especially because her husband didn’t jump in to defend her. Apparently, he didn’t because he kind of agreed with what his mom said. While the woman was his family since they were married, she wasn’t his family’s family.

The question of whether a person becomes a member of their spouse’s family is debatable. It all comes down to what the family believes in. For instance, if they’re very thoroughly following the Bible’s word, that means they’re not a family. As this Quora answer pointed out, the Bible says that when a man and a woman get married, they’re creating a new household, meaning they are no longer part of their previous families.

Yet, it’s quite unlikely that many people follow this that straightforwardly, as removing yourself from the rest of your family after marriage seems extreme. Another netizen suggests a completely different point of view.

This one states that by legally getting married, people add themselves to other families and become their in-laws. Even though there are no legal responsibilities involved, it still paints them as a family.

So, as you can see, it depends on what values a family bases their lives on. It also depends on their inner dynamics. That means that no one was either wrong or right in the dispute described in the story.

The husband didn’t jump to his wife’s defense, because he understood where his mom was coming from

Sometime after the argument, the husband came back home and found his wife nearly having a panic attack

Apparently, his family decided to get revenge for her prank and staged a break-in, which terrified her, causing the man to fully cut off his family

Either way, it wasn’t the end of it all. One day, the OP came back home and found his wife on the verge of a panic attack. Apparently, as revenge for her prank on Liv, the family decided to prank Zoe.

The woman was home alone when family members and friends staged a break-in. They had ski masks and ropes, so it really freaked the woman out, as she thought she was going to be hurt. Then, the girl popped out giggling and Zoe understood that it was all a prank. Quite a sadistic one, isn’t it?

Well, that’s exactly what the OP thought. He was so mad about it that he hit his stepdad, told his mom he’d never forgive her, and left to live at a motel while they were between places.

Image credits: MART PRODUCTION / Pexels (not the actual photo)

People online fully understood where he was coming from with such a reaction. Traumatizing someone with a break-in isn’t a fun prank. Some shared just how much they despise pranks overall, as they abuse relationship balance, and this situation proved just how messed up they can be.

Well, as someone in the comments said, pranks should confuse, not abuse, and it’s clear here that this prank didn’t do that. Yes, maybe the woman shouldn’t have pranked the girl in the first place, as they’re not that close, but she didn’t deserve the way they repaid her.

If you’re now wondering if you’ve ever crossed a line with your prank, FindLaw has provided a checklist for that. First, you should check whether your prank was appropriate for your target — startling a 25-year-old and an 80-year-old is a very different thing. Then, damaging property or trespassing shouldn’t occur during harmless pranks either. Similarly, causing emotional or physical harm to the victim — scarring someone for a joke isn’t funny at all.

Looking at these tips, it seems the OP’s family managed to fail at least 3 out of 4. This makes their revenge prank neither harmless nor justified. But perhaps it was never meant to be?

Sadly, now the relationship between the family members is ruined so badly that it doesn’t matter what kind of values they have. Their view on who is and who isn’t a family member is changed forever. Well, unless something else happens.

“That escalated quickly”: people online were flabbergasted by the sudden turn of events but understood why the man got so mad at his family

Pranks are bullying. Don't do them. They say don't get mad, get even...well I get mad. No-one pranks me a second time - I make sure they get the message after the first attempt. I'm not violent by nature; so far I've been successful with a line such as "I'm going out; I'll be back in 10 minutes; this will be fixed by then or there will be a problem." Fortunately it's always worked. Sometimes the threat of violence puts an end to things.

Talk about a disproportionate response. I'm not happy with either "prank", but one was a temporary scare while the other made someone fear for their life. They're lucky she didn't have a different response and go on the offensive. That's how serious injuries or worse happen. I would have called the police to report what happened in case these idiots did something even more stupid next time and there were serious consequences. Depending on local laws they may have broken the law. Where I live they could be charged with menacing.

Jesus. My husband and I prank each other all the time... but our pranks are absolutely harmless. Like I once taped a butter knife to our milk and drew googly eyes on it, and then told him to check our milk because I thought it had "gone bad". Or he once snuck our daughter's Slinky Dog (like from Toy Story) into the hallway, posed it to make it look like it was going potty, and scattered pieces of Hershey kisses behind it. This article was just horrifying. Those are not pranks.

MINOR pranks with someone you know very well I think are ok. For example! TODAY My partner crept up on me in the shower, oddly enough I freaking KNEW he was going to do it and thus didn’t respond as much. He also has a habit of peeping his head around the corner (just his head) with a creepy grin when I’m in the middle of cooking or watching something and I think he is still asleep. I don’t mind these… targeting a kid is dangerous territory never mind staging a god damn break in. I’ve experienced a home invasion, at this point I’d probably attack. That is an insane step up from a mask while someone is sleeping.

I personally think "Zoe" got what she deserved. She was living rent free with her inlaws and decided to break into the bedroom of a sleepin, socially awkward/ maybe autistic 10 year old who is already shy around her and terrify her with a monster mask of a creature she knows she is afraid of. I noticed they minimized Liz's reaction , just saying she wouldn't talk to Zoe after and kept saying it was just a prank and not a big deal. It was a adult woman bullying and tormenting a kid and doubling down on being the offended party when mom told her off. Now Zoe knows how it feels to be on the receiving end of such pranks. And for those saying "well Zoe thought she would die" I'm fairly sure the little girl probably felt the same way when she woke up to a monster in her bedroom.

As someone who was once home alone while someone was trying to break in, no one deserves to feel that way. Pranking Liv was wrong, but two wrongs don't make a right.

My son is 9 and easily frightened. I myself am afraid of the dark, so I understand his fears. If anyone, even my husband, my sons father, „pranked“ him by scaring him like that, I would be LIVID! Having said that, I must say, I don‘t like the retaliation either and I have to agree with the commenter who said something like „if that is the standart of pranks the father is setting, I am no longer surprized Zoe thought her prank was ok“

Why didn't the OP tell his wife, before any of this got traction, she is frightened by the Krampus thing and you two don't have much of a relationship now so it's probably not recommended. The OP and his wife opened the door for abuse by pulling the Krampus prank. OP's family, however, took to a whole new level. It's very good that they are no contact because it could easily escalate since the "adults" seem to be the most immature and the youngest...

It's only funny if Everyone is laughing. The Krampus prank was just immature and stupid, but pretending to break in? That's how pranksters get shot where I come from. We believe in protecting ourselves and our property from criminals. And breaking in is actually criminal even though they called it a "joke'. Local cops won't see it that way as you lie in the morgue.

She was an absolute idiot for scaring a shy child Asleep in her bedroom, where she should have been safe. The others were Insane absolutely Malicious in their prank. A lone female, faced by Men in ski masks and ropes breaking into her home... She didn't just fear hurt, she Feared and Likely fully expected to be violently raped, gang raped or murdered as well as well as the inevitable sexual assault. 1 in 4 women has experienced sexual assault. These people Knew Exactly what they were doing. Police should have been called.

I *kind of* understand why Zoe pulled the prank. I think she was trying to fit in with the family and be part of things. But it was a bad idea, it distressed Liv, and Zoe came off as a bully. OP should have pulled Zoe aside, explained that pranking was off-limits, and Zoe should have then humbly apologized and promised to never do something like that again. Then gone and gotten Liv a very nice apology gift. That should have been a condition of them being allowed to remain in the house. But the response prank was over-the-top cruel and sadistic, and it did NOT fix the situation. It taught Liv that the answer to someone hurting you (even inadvertently) is to hurt them back far worse. I admit that as a bullied child, I'd have loved to see my bullies suffer, so I can see Liv enjoying that, but it was not an adult way of solving the problem, and now it's led to total family estrangement. But maybe that's best.

Zoe is a grown adult who KNEW that a CHILD - a CHILD, not another adult - had a hatred/fear of a particular character/thing, and she SNUCK INTO the child's room, WOKE the child from a sound sleep, wearing a mask of the character that the child hates/fears. Yeah, no, that is NOT just "scaring a kid with a Halloween mask". And Zoe didn't get tied up at all - OP didn't say she got tied up. I'm not saying what OP's family did to Zoe is correct or right - it's not - but don't downplay what happened to Liv as "just" being frightened with a mask.

OP’s account was suspended and his post removed so I doubt this story is true.

A suspicious amount of BP-Reddit co-productions end up with suspended accounts.

Bro what? I would...damage people severely if they staged a break in. Like who thinks this is a good idea? Are they in the US? Because...concealed carry is a thing. Nothing about this is a good idea.

Everyone but the OP is a bunch of human sewage. The fact they think this prank s*it is okay is beyond me. NC is the best for everyone.

The mask thing was stupid, and kid didn’t seem upset by it in her brother’s telling the story, but the break-in thing? That’s complete INSANITY. If I knew who those people were, I’d be no-contact with ‘em, too. They thought THAT was a good idea? Holy c**p! They’re lucky they weren’t shot. IT WAS A HOME INVASION! That’s sick!

Weirdly enough, I'm okay with what these men did to the wife. B***h was a f*****g bully to someone vulnerable and innocent. The cow deserved the same treatment; to be pranked when vulnerable. This whole family are f****d up and deserve each other.

Scaring a kid with a Halloween mask is waaaay different than staging a house break-in, tying up the victim, and pretending they were going to freaking murder her
