This Street Artist Is Painting Fake Shadows To Confuse People, And The Result Looks Too Real
If you take a stroll around Redwood City, California, you might get the sense that something isn't quite right. Pay particular attention to the shadows. Notice how they seem to misbehave? Flowers sprout from the dark shadows of bike racks, mailboxes turn into shadow monsters, and shady monkeys hang around atop parking meters. What's going on?
Well, before you go running for the hills, don't worry, because they're actually the shadow art of Damon Belanger, a graphic artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was commissioned to install 20 fake shadows in the downtown area of Redwood City in order to bring more creativity to the area, and as you can see, his street art certainly succeeded in doing just that. “The shadows give regular mundane objects a lively spirit so people can have a little fun in their everyday life,” says the artist, who makes these unique artworks by chalking stencils onto the sidewalk before painting them dark grey. Amazing how even with the real shadows clearly visible, the painted ones still look very convincing!
It's great to see something fun and someone creating something happy for a change! I love this persons artwork. :)
Is it normal to put the bench there? Not too close to the parking space?
Ah, sorry, misread your comment, ignore the "people need a rest" part. Still, it's pretty normal.

So adorable! I wish someone would do something like this locally.
You... don't... understand... the... purpose... of... ellipses... do... you...?

Load More Replies...By doing that it makes the image stand out better from the lighter concrete. :D
Load More Replies...The attempt to edit out the actual shadow that was under the bench is unnecessary, and looks bad.
OH you've gotten so big must cut back on the dog food I am feeding you
this all looks like it is done by the same person... but it is still good! 👍👍
There would have been a bike parked at that pole.

Invest in knee pads. Your knees may feel O.K. now, but ... Good work, I'd like to see more through the years. Knee pads.
Yeah, I don't know how he does it, I'm in my 30s and kneeling on concrete KILLS.

So fun, great and ludic! Loved it! Congratulations to the artist Damon Belanger.
You just have to love the originality of the whole thing. And on top of that, the city of Redwood has given him the go-ahead to do these things, by actually commissioning him. This is wonderful. :D 👍👍
They're awesome! It must be very confusing to see bizarre shadows coming from something, especially if the sun is at the wrong angle! Well done art, and a fun way to incorporate art into everyday life.
You can see the real shadows in some of the pictures. Just gotta open your eyes. Nothing changes.
