Sure, we can turn a blind eye to the dark side of the world. But that won't make it any brighter. I would even argue that we should, on the contrary, venture into the shadows. Into the unknown. I believe we'd come out with a better understanding of ourselves. Or at the very least, of our surroundings.

Luckily, there are two Reddit posts we can use as starting points for our journey. One by u/Literal-Pile-of-Poo and the other by u/Yoloextreme345. They're phrased differently but essentially ask the same thing and invite other users to share some of the most disturbing facts they know. And many have. Here are some of the most popular submissions.

30 Disturbing Facts That People Probably Shouldn’t Have Shared But Did Anyway When X-ray technology first became widely available to pediatricians, they noticed a startling high number of broken bones. Befuddled doctors assumed there was a previously unknown pediatric bone disease being observed for the first time. Turns out we had no idea how common child abuse is.

This is heartbreaking; and it's the same with incest and sexual abuse. The rate of this abuse against the innocents is horrific. I taught for 20 years & had an increase in reported cases of abuse. But it wasn't that there was more abuse. It was that teachers were finally receiving training on what to look for.

Also discovered that osteogenesis imperfecta, which I have, is more common than was thought, and sometimes people were blamed as child abusers, who simply had children with brittle bones. I was x-rayed after a car accident at seven. My foreams showed multiple healed fractures. Yes it had hurt. But I was used to it. They were going to arrest my parents. This was in 1972!!! But a doctor, and an old Dr at that, had seen it before! Because, X-rays!

Actually, this is one of the reason that we were asking "why now?" with regards to the widespread child abuse since about the 1990s. By the 90s, mandatory reporting became part of the school bus driver job, any job really that saw children as part of the daily routine. Doctors started having to keep parents out of the patient's earshot to ask "are you okay at home".

I can't imagine who would look down on you for such a thing. I was beat with a belt as a child and it had a similar effect on me, as it did you. I've found children who are hit like this grow up in one of two ways: they either become angry and violent adults, or become very compassionate adults. It sounds like you are the latter - you have turned your pain into strength and kindness. If anything, people should be congratulating you.

Just ask your grandparents and great grandparents, if they are still around, how children were treated and you will realise how bad it was.

    Look at demographics, a black woman in the USA is 4x more likely to die in child birth after variables such as access to health insurance, socio-economic status are accounted for. Medical racism is rampant and results in maternal mortality.

    I actually worked on that mission and one of the lead investigators had told me that other than the pilot, copilot and last person in the seating arrangement, all o2 aux systems had been activated. I believe he said the person behind had to do the activation, which implied 5 people were conscious. That investigator also worked Apollo One right out of college and told me that sad story. How did I come by this info, I had worked on the TDRSS fuel and engine systems and when I was watching the launch, I realized immediately it was a pressure-based explosion. So for 3 days I thought I may have caused the problem and was quite distraught. A VP at the company called his good friend, the investigator I mentioned, and they called me to ket me know i had not contributed to the disaster. But I will never forget the impact of that day and how it forever changed how I dealt with setbacks.

    what hurts the most about the crash is that it was 100% avoidable. The engineer who designed the gasket rings placed between the rocket stages warned everyone all the way up to Prez Reagan that a gasket failure during launch was possible in the cold weather. They all discounted his advice and went ahead anyway. The Nasa manager who made the final "green light, go ahead" decision said they had to keep up with the production schedule. This is highly risky experimental space exploration with lives at stake, not churning out hot dogs in a sausage factory according to someone in marketing's production schedule. He did not understand this. If he could not understand this, he never should have held that job. As far as I know, he never had any real accountability.

    However, there's something intrinsically human about seeking out gloom. Experts call it negativity bias.

    In short, it's our tendency not only to register negative stimuli more readily but also to dwell on these events. Also known as positive-negative asymmetry, this negativity bias means that we feel the sting of a rebuke more powerfully than we feel the joy of praise.

    As humans, we tend to:

    • Remember traumatic experiences better than positive ones;
    • Recall insults better than praise;
    • React more strongly to negative stimuli;
    • Think about negative things more frequently than positive ones;
    • Respond more strongly to negative events than to equally positive ones;

    So chances are, we'll see similar posts in the future as well.

    The recovery rate for the estimated 115 children abducted by strangers in the US each year, a very small but alarming segment of children reported missing annually, is less heartening. An average of 57 percent of them come home alive and 40 percent are killed. The rest remain open cases. Many of the children reported missing are lost, runaways, injured or taken by a parent in a custody case.

    Out of all people who are reported missing each year, 87-90% are found safe. Of the 10-13% who aren't, 30% of THAT percentage are estimated to have been killed. Not that anyone being killed is acceptable, but I think there's some people who are reading that 30% of all missing people are assumed to have been killed.

    30 Disturbing Facts That People Probably Shouldn’t Have Shared But Did Anyway Doctors used to perform heart surgery on infants without anesthesia. Thankfully this practice was ended. In the 1980s.

    In the 80's? Whose idea was it to not use anaesthesia? Whoever decided that deserves a pineapple up the ass without anaesthesia. Daily.

    It was believed babies didn't feel pain and drugging them was a greater risk

    A recent post addressed this in depth, and the overall consensus appeared to be that publicly the medical profession took the stance that babies did not feel pain, while privately they feared the infants were at greater risk from the anesthesia itself.

    My son was 2 years old when his lip was lacerated up into his nostrils. The ER doctor sewed him up without anesthesia and without any numbing of the skin with lidocaine. When I protested I was escorted out of the ER room And they proceeded with sewing him up. I was a young mother, inexperienced with the ways of the medical establishment and unaware I could file a protest etc. Also, when 3 of my infant sons were circumcised in the 1980's, it was also done without numbing the penis. I was told "the nerves aren't developed enough for it to hurt" and "they are too young to remember the pain". My eyes still fill with tears when I think about that now.

    This blows my mind. How could a baby survive this? You'd think the shock their bodies would go through would kill them. There has to be an explanation to this - any Bored doctors out there? Someone explain, please.

    It's really hard to dose anesthesia, it could be fatal when you give people the wrong dose, and medical science didn't work out how to dose infants correctly until relatively recently.

    That was because of the dangers of anesthesia, and they did not know how to give it to an infant without killing them (with adults it has a high error rate and issues, considered the toughest specialty in medicine). Once they figured out how to do it safely, they then did so.

    Ok. I respect that argument. But to turn around and say 'oh they don't feel pain' when that is NOT the reason they aren't using anesthesia is just sick and wrong.

    For too long the idea was that infants and children did not feel pain 'in the way adults do'. Bill sh*t. This is the only reason I refused to have my sons circumcised. If the doctor wouldn't to it to himself without anesthesia, they weren't doing it to my children. And this was when it was highly frowned upon to say NO to doctors and not do what 'everyone else was doing'.

    A Jewish doctor treated Hitler’s Mother(The only person Adolf ever truly loved) while she was dying of cancer. He promised his eternal gratitude to the doctor and even after becoming a pathological anti-Semite and later the Fuhrer, he was true to his word and was adamant the doctor and his family be placed under protection from the purge. While some may think this an act of genuine kindness, I just think about all the lives lost because Hitler never stopped to think that all Jews were capable of good and not just the one who happened to have been good to him because of immediate proximity..

    Hitler probably didn't have Jews killed because he genuinely feared or hated them - he did it to give the German people a "common enemy" and basically to manipulate the public. Which is kind of worse.

    All colors were "fixed" with urine. There used to be "piss pots" out front of dyers. Men would stop, piss in the pot and the dyer would collect the urine to soak dyed cloths in. That would "fix" the color.

    Some smaller companies still do this the traditional way. Also "being blue" means being drunk in German for the same reason - because people working with color needed to drink a lot to be able to piss enough. From the same source also comes "making blue" in German, which means to skip work or school - because dyers had big gaps in their work schedule, where they just had to wait.

    Urine has been a valuable commodity all thru history. It was used in laundering clothing, setting dyes, tanning leather and making gunpowder, among other things. During the Civil War, it was considered your patriotic duty to collect urine for munitions manufacture.

    True, and it also doesn't mean they're any good. Most of them put zero effort into actually defending you and instead just encourage you to plead guilty and take the prosecutor's offer. Interesting that the judge, the prosecutor, and your court-appointed lawyer are all on the same payroll.

    I worked with PDs at a local courthouse once. Most of them are genuinely well meaning, hard working and trying their best (some are just padding a resume, they suck). The problem is that they can have 20 clients to represent in the same day, and sometimes don't even get the reports till the day of the hearing. The system is just lip service to fair justice, but it's too expensive to do properly, so they just "United States it" and do a half assed job.

    For a short period of time in the mid-1980's, carrot chips were marketed as a healthy alternative snack to potato chips. Turns out the process to make them concentrated the amount of vitamin A to the point that if someone ate too many (one bag by themselves) the result would be a bit toxic. They were around for only about 9 months.

    30 Disturbing Facts That People Probably Shouldn’t Have Shared But Did Anyway One of the most toxic chemicals on Earth is an organic mercury compound. The material safety sheet notes that it has a slightly sweet odor, but at a concentration where the smell is detectable, it is already lethal. That observation came from someone who would inevitably die from accidental exposure.

    I believe this to be something only certain people can smell though. I have been a continuous care hospice nurse for about 15 years, meaning I sit at the bedside of patients to help maintain their comfort during their final moments (12 hour shifts). There is definitely a smell that many patients will have while dying a natural death. However to me it is never floral or pleasantly sweet, but while in the same room another person may comment of this beautiful fragrance. I have no deficient in my sense of smell in general. I don’t like the version I smell.

    during my dear Mama's last hours before death (June 2013), she exuded a strong vinegar odor; breath, skin everywhere. By the way, she also had visitation from my brother, who had passed in 1999. She opened her eyes and spoke very clearly to him, obviously answering questions...then she reached up to take his hand I guess. Pretty emotional for us all....

    My darling, darling old cat smelled like fallen autumn leaves in the end. One morning I knew for sure that she was going to go that day, partly because that sweet, peaceful scent was even stronger. I held her all day and later I kept the top I was wearing in a sealed bag. I could smell her on it for months and it helped a bit with the pain. That sad but oddly comforting smell will never be gone from my memory.

    Some nursing homes & hospices use pet cats as comfort animals. Their job is to go around to the residents & give them hugs & love. Sometimes these cats park themselves overnight in bed with a resident, who dies the next day. No, they are not murder cats. They can predict when someone will die within 24 hours. This explains it.

    I completely agree and believe you. My husband fought pancreatic cancer for nearly six years. His last few months, he has this sickly sweet smell to him. Cancer really does have a smell when it takes over the body and It changed to a more pungent, sharp smell a few days before he passed away. I knew by that change that it was his time at age 39.

    I'll agree to disagree here. My neighbor, years ago, was ailing and had a fall a bunch of years back. I heard it through the wall and helped his wife get him to bed. I went home and smelled what can only be likened to actual death on my skin and clothes, so I bathed and washed them. The smell remained, seeping through the walls it seemed. He died a day later in that same bed and the smell didn't leave the house until about a week afterward. It was most certainly not sweet, but rather the most putrid, noxious smell I think I have ever had the displeasure of imprinting on my brain.

    There is a super weird one that infects snails, causing the eye stalks to pulse, birds eat the snail, bird poops, snail eats poop, cycle continues. The worse parasite IMHO (rarely humble) is called Chagas Disease, a beetle called an assassin bug will bite you near your mouth while you are sleeping, this is why it is commonly called a “kissing bug” if the assassin bug carries a parasite, you are doomed. The parasite can take decades to do enough damage for you to produce symptoms, by then, it’s too late. The parasite prefers making its reproduction nest out of your heart and lungs. The only way to test is to get bit by the beetle raised in a sterile lab, then have the beetles poop tested, which basically only tells you that your days are numbered.

    Since I've had two of them, have them at least controlled because they can become malign and can grow. They can also have effects on your hormone levels.

    They grow in the ovary, in dermoid cysts. Basically they are stem cells that started to develop into specific tissue. It can happen in testicles too, but then they are usually malign. In ovaries they are typically harmless. I had one in my left and one in my right ovary and were removed. Both contained bone, fat, and hair tissue.

    It's called a teratoma. Interestingly, I was diagnosed with having one about a week ago. It's a kind of non-cancerous tumour made of cells that randomly specialise to be bone or hair. I have teeth in my right ovary! :D

    Depends on the soil. It's fascinating to see the bodies that have been recovered from peat soil, still largely intact after 2,000 years or more. Apparently sandy soil is more acidic and reduces a body to bones quickly, which is why ancient human remains are rarely found in desert countries.

    Fish was a pure savage. He ate a few of his victims & when he wasn't practicing cannibalism, he would eat his own feces. Fish also enjoyed burning himself with hot irons & fire pokers & he inserted sewing needles into his groin area (30 needles were found in his groin after he reported it to a psychiatrist).

    30 Disturbing Facts That People Probably Shouldn’t Have Shared But Did Anyway the surgery with the highest mortality rate was 300%. how did this happen? well, there was a surgeon called Robert Liston who was famous for his fast amputations, and when I say fast I'm talking 30 seconds to 1 minute surgeries, 180x faster than amputations now (this happened in the 1800's). one day he was performing an amputation but accidentally amputated much more than he should have, due to the fact that the patient was thrashing about in pain while assistants held them down as there was no anasthetic at the time. he was amputating so fast that he cut through his assistant's finger. the surgical tools were probably dirty as both the patient an the assistant died of infections. as for the third guy, people enjoyed watching Liston preform surgeries and he was at the front of the crowd. Liston slashed the spectator's coat, which supposedly caused the spectator to die of shock (likely a heart attack). TL:DR doctor amputated guy, cuts assistant and slashed spectator's coat, causing all 3 to die.

    When I have to travel and leave my dog she often get sick and has diarrhea after a couple of days. I travel a lot for work so I have a regular lady who also has a dog that looks after her. The dog stays at my house and the lady takes here for walks and with the other dogs. She often sends me videos of my dog playing or being cuddly with her. When I'm back she ignores the lady, wont even look at her.

    Surprisingly common at subway and train stations, when people fall into the gap between the platform and a moving car. The friction of the moving car twists the torso around and around, essentially separating the upper and lower halves but leaving them connected. With a ruined spinal cord, the victim feels little pain and remains alert. First responders hate these incidents because they know that the only way to get the victim out--which has to be done--is by moving the train. The instant the pressure is released, the victim dies, even though they FEEL okay up to the last instant. It's a horrible scene for everyone involved.

    30 Disturbing Facts That People Probably Shouldn’t Have Shared But Did Anyway Those bitter, sour, or otherwise nasty tasting pistachios had a worm, larva, or some other pest in them. I bit into a pear as as very small child (one of my earliest memories), and showed my mom that there was half a worm where I'd bitten. She told me it was just protein and was full of the pear it had just been eating, and just shrugged like "it's fine". Even so, it took me decades before I could eat a fresh pear again without slicing it up and inspecting it first. So it made quite an impression on me anyway - maybe because it was such a rare occurrance, in that it only happened once, so other fruits seemed "safe" and only that one seemed not?

    In the US, most foods (especially cereals) are allowed to have insect parts in them, as it is impossible to filter them out. I forget the actual ratio of food to bug bits, but it goes by weight of the food.

    For all the people saying this isn't true because a military guy said this - yes, the powergrid is indeed that vulnerable. It doesn't take much for grids to overcharge, and due to them being linked and covering a wide area they are the weakest link in any country's infrastructure. (There was an incident here in Europe in November 2006 - one line was shut down here in Germany and the overcharge caused a 2 hour blackout all through middle Europe)

    While I do not know how true this is, apparently, our power grids are very weak as many are past upgrades of 20 years or more. They are hard to access and cross state lines that makes fixing them difficult.

    I've done home support for almost 30 years. I assure you that people who suffer from dementia have periods of clarity and are devastated by the loss of their ability to remember aspects of their previous life. It's heartbreaking for them, for their family, and for me as a care giver.

For those who have been aware and let it continue or continued turning a blind eye, for shame. At least investigators, like CBC's Marketplace, has brought some of it to light. Unfortunately people are still buying these products.

    That figs contains wasps. They pollenate by the wasp crawling inside the male plant and then the female one however the female plant has a smaller hole and the wasp dies inside. The wasp decomposes in the fruit. So if you eat a ripe fig you eat at least one wasp. Used to be my favorite. So sad.

    Well by the time it's ripe, the wasp (body) is (supposed to be) completely dissolved. So technically your not eating the wasp, since the was had effectively been "digested", for lack of a better word.

    Being a cannibal isn't/wasn't unacceptable everytime, everywhere. Various cultures practiced endo-cannibalisme either to absorb the strenght/energy of their lost ones, either because of the lack of protein supplies. Kuru was identified among the Fore on an Island where antropophagia was part of the funeral rite. There is a difference betwenn eating your deads to honor them or not to starve and to kill people/eat someone else deads to appropriate their energy (stealing it from their people)

    Kuru is a very rare disease. It is caused by an infectious protein (prion) found in contaminated human brain tissue. Kuru is found among people from New Guinea who practiced a form of cannibalism in which they ate the brains of dead people as part of a funeral ritual.

(I read a rather graphic book about the Middle Ages for a research report. That's the reason why those strains of the plague always died out. They were evolutionary dead ends. They killed every host they could get and that very fast. That also meant even primitive quarantine measures were often effective.

    When someone is beaten and suffers blunt force trauma to the back of the head, it isn’t brain damage that kills them. Most of the time it damages the bones in the roof of your mouth and nose and the bleeding from these highly vascular areas make the person drown in their own blood.

    They thought the very last image that the person sees (hopefully the killers face, they thought) would be burned into the eyes/pupils, and they would be able to see it, almost like an image burn. But sadly that's not true. If it was, way more murders would be solved. Or just tons of eye-less victims.

    Rissie

    This explanation is wrong. It takes longer for the tissue to burn fully so it has to be at its highest temperature for a longer time, risking overheating the equipment. They have to keep an eye out for this and a lower temperature overall might be the way to keep the equipment safe. The temperature of fat burning is not high enough to combust the material fully, there's also a lot of water and other material within the fatty tissue layers. The smoking point of lard, for comparison is 190 degrees celsius, a cremation oven reaches about 900-1000 degrees celsius. So it's not the fat burning, it's controling the temperature because of the time it takes for the extra tissue.

    Oddly phrased... What is the average human? Or, is it, on average, humans will speak to 16 murderers? One is a non specific subset of the population, the other is everyone on average. If you get what I mean? If it was the latter, then that means between 7-8Billion of us.. over the course of 70 odd years.. there are 100-120 Billion interactions with murderers? Assuming all interactions aren't unique, and there's some heavy duplication of murderers in these interactions.... My mind is melting! Like some murderers kill once, others several times. I just have a feeling if this was true, all of humanity would need to be dead! This is just such a meaningless statement

I moved and the new mailman eventually bought the house next to me. He's actually a really good guy, but he was new to the postal service and had gotten a really difficult route, since he had no seniority yet. The first guy had murdered his wife. So yeah, Scary.

    A cremation oven will still leave bones intact and it takes quite some time to burn the whole body. The remains you receive after the fact? Ground up bones! Not ashes. They put it in a special blender and go grrrrlrllllrwrar, et voila!

    And pottery is fired at about 2100°f. Although there are variations. The insulating tiles on the outside of the space shuttles were ceramic. You can pit fire clay as well. So ceramics quite literally can be extremely primitive to rocket science.

    Until the 1980’s, people had no idea that Orangutans had two different sub-species and ended up cross breeding the two. And the end result was known as the “cocktail orangutan”. The problem with these hybrid orangutans is while they are fertile, they suffer numerous health issues and allowing them to continue to breed will result in the orangutan population to diminish even more

    Most zoos that have Orangutans have done genetic testing and health workups and those are checked and rechecked and then checked against the other Orangutans eligible for breeding. It's how the Species Survival Plan works. Breeding of any endangered animal is done very carefully

    Three. There are three orang-utan species. The cross-breeding problem occurred in many species; one of the most damaging was the inadvertent crossing of African lions with Asiatic lions.

    I think the percentage is much, much higher than that. The preponderance of people on death row in the USA, are men, those of colour, and those whose educational level stops around elementary/primary school. The more organizations like the Innocence Project that exist, the more we see that too many of these people were tried, convicted and sentenced without proper evidence, because they didn't have the means to fight back against the system.

    No, they *were* exonerated. Because they were innocent, just as the one actually guilty murder had always said, just as THEY always said. But FBI and Police at the time were happy with having caught someone and just withheld witness-statements (one of them being an alibi for one of the men) and other evidence that could have proven their innocence (would have, more likely) and it turns out that those two men had to spend 20 YEARS in prison until they were released and NOW someone actually said "Oh... whoops?" One of them men died a few years ago, and the other is 83. A life stolen because police was not just sloppy but criminally incompetent and too eager to just get anyone convicted. And I bet you they would have executed them if there had been the death penalty for murder.

    When you are cremated the ovens do not melt your bones. The fragments are put in to a blender and pulverised in to the ash that we think of with cremation

    nope, just be kind and have a bit of imagination. Poster says that although you've never licked a tree you can probably imagine very well how that experience would be. Gritty, strangely "not cold", earthy. You KNOW it but you've never done it. That is some weird skill to have.

    So tell me; what would it feel like licking the edge of a serrated knife dripping with rubbing alcohol? Because I actually don't know

    I have the unbridled curse of knowing exactly what something will both taste and feel like just by looking at it, so I will answer. The alcohol hurts more than the knife does, since licking alcohol tastes EXTREMELY unpleasant. But licking a serrated knife, while being a bad idea, won't hurt you as long as you don't press too hard and it's a relatively old knife.

    Think 9 volt batteries, still feel the buzz. It has been years.

    After the Tienemann Square Massacre. To get rid of the bodies, Chinese tanks drove over them and "pancaked" them so troops could easily just use hoses to wash them into the gutters

    This seems like an urban legend. I've seen enough "pancaked" roadkill to know it is still pretty chunky and not really able to be washed off. Even with a high pressure hose it would be stringy and get stuck in drains.

    Not to mention it'd clog up the tank's wheels after a while, it's far easier to just haul a body away than it is to reduce it to washable mush.

    Not very believable if you can't even spell Tiananmen right.

    I think this urbann legend comes from "Tank Man" who stood in front of the tanks which were brought in. 5 people were run over by the tanks. They didn't pancake the bodies and wash them away.

    You haven't seen it pancaked by a tank, though.

    I've seen things pancaked by other heavy machinery. Not much difference between a combine or a backhoe and a tank weight wise. And my brother had a coworker get run over by a bulldozer. He was not that squished and certainly not able to just be hosed off the side walk.

    Or you could just post an alleged citation in the time it took you to write that rant
