Sure, we can turn a blind eye to the dark side of the world. But that won't make it any brighter. I would even argue that we should, on the contrary, venture into the shadows. Into the unknown. I believe we'd come out with a better understanding of ourselves. Or at the very least, of our surroundings.
Luckily, there are two Reddit posts we can use as starting points for our journey. One by u/Literal-Pile-of-Poo and the other by u/Yoloextreme345. They're phrased differently but essentially ask the same thing and invite other users to share some of the most disturbing facts they know. And many have. Here are some of the most popular submissions.

When X-ray technology first became widely available to pediatricians, they noticed a startling high number of broken bones. Befuddled doctors assumed there was a previously unknown pediatric bone disease being observed for the first time. Turns out we had no idea how common child abuse is.
Still today X-Rays are showing how "good" parents are exposed!
Load More Replies...This is heartbreaking; and it's the same with incest and sexual abuse. The rate of this abuse against the innocents is horrific. I taught for 20 years & had an increase in reported cases of abuse. But it wasn't that there was more abuse. It was that teachers were finally receiving training on what to look for.
Also discovered that osteogenesis imperfecta, which I have, is more common than was thought, and sometimes people were blamed as child abusers, who simply had children with brittle bones. I was x-rayed after a car accident at seven. My foreams showed multiple healed fractures. Yes it had hurt. But I was used to it. They were going to arrest my parents. This was in 1972!!! But a doctor, and an old Dr at that, had seen it before! Because, X-rays!
Actually, this is one of the reason that we were asking "why now?" with regards to the widespread child abuse since about the 1990s. By the 90s, mandatory reporting became part of the school bus driver job, any job really that saw children as part of the daily routine. Doctors started having to keep parents out of the patient's earshot to ask "are you okay at home".
I'm looked down on because I won't hit my kids.. they have autism ....I was hit and it destroyed me I don't hit my kids.
I can't imagine who would look down on you for such a thing. I was beat with a belt as a child and it had a similar effect on me, as it did you. I've found children who are hit like this grow up in one of two ways: they either become angry and violent adults, or become very compassionate adults. It sounds like you are the latter - you have turned your pain into strength and kindness. If anything, people should be congratulating you.
Load More Replies...Just ask your grandparents and great grandparents, if they are still around, how children were treated and you will realise how bad it was.
Humans, being mostly Carbon, can be made into diamonds. I plan to go the cheaper route and have my ashes be rolled into a glass paperweight. Some day I might even end up on the shelf of a Goodwill for $2.99
Have your ashes turned into an hourglass to remind people how quickly time goes by.
Yeah, you be turned into a diamond, freeze dried like coffee, be buried in a pod that will grow you into a tree, or, coming soon to the northwest, composted!
Oooh I wanna be a tree. But an endangered one so it can’t be cut down
Load More Replies...My 4 month old daughter who died of SIDS is now a diamond set in a bracelet charm. There are companies who specialise in turning a loved ones ashes into manufactured diamonds. Cost 3 k but worth it
Oh Cecily, I am very, truly sorry. I cannot imagine such a loss.

I think that I would end up as that weird Christmas gift that no one wants and is regifted amongst the same group of people, year after bloody year. That would be a s**t way to spend eternity.
I want to be in a pretty vase on a warm shelf but knowing my son I’d end up in recycling in a heart beat. 🤣
We managed to get in touch with one of the people who started this discussion, u/Literal-Pile-of-Poo, and they were kind enough to have a little chat with us about their now-viral post.
"I think I [came up with the idea for it when I] was just watching TV and [since] I liked reading those kinds of threads in r/AskReddit where people tell stories or something that was just interesting like [random] facts, I thought I would just make a post that I would find interesting to read as well," the Redditor told Bored Panda.
Giving birth has higher mortality rate than having an abortion.
The single biggest cause of death of pregnant people in the USA is homicide.
Globally. This fact needs to be understood more widely. And the murderer is the man/spouse (I recall a discussion between clueless people, who thought that pregnant women would somehow attract random attackers...).
Load More Replies...Abortions are very safe, especially early abortions carried out with medication.
@Billy Bitchface The fetus isn't a f*cking person, is it?
Load More Replies...Look at demographics, a black woman in the USA is 4x more likely to die in child birth after variables such as access to health insurance, socio-economic status are accounted for. Medical racism is rampant and results in maternal mortality.
I don't know the ratios exactly here but we have similar issues in the UK

Whales don't die from old age they just lose the strength to pull them selves up for air and slowly sink and drown
Damn. I got stage 4 copd so I can relate. Depressing. At least they could just *blink* be dead instead of that crap!
Dolphins can will themselves not to breathe and die
Load More Replies...Well, in essence, isnt this still dying of old age? They "lose the strength to pull them selves up for air"...WHY? Because of their old age....young whales do not have this issue, so it IS a roundabout way of old age causing death....
It isn’t a true fact. Sick or disabled whales can drown. But old whales don’t just drown please don’t believe everything you read.
Load More Replies...Heard it said a few times it's the worst way to die as it's so painful and terrifying.
Load More Replies..."From the responses, I learned a lot about how nature is much more brutal than it seems. Many of the facts were about weird things animals do," the Redditor added.
But with that being said, they think people should not seek messed up info if they're not into that kind of thing. "The less disturbing things you come across the better in my opinion. But, I feel this post was more geared towards changing your perspective on how things work."
Right now, your Government is doing things YOU think only OTHER Governments do.
Don't know where you live, but the Biden administration just passed the most expansive infrastructure package in at least 50 years. Some of them are working.
Load More Replies...I WISH our government did SOME of the things I think OTHER governments do.
Quite sure that's not true. At this moment my government is doing absolutely nothing.
My government is trying to create a Hindu Rashtra. What about you guys?
Three of the air packs that were found on the wreckage of the Challenger disaster were activated, meaning at least one of the astronauts was alive all the way to the ocean.
I actually worked on that mission and one of the lead investigators had told me that other than the pilot, copilot and last person in the seating arrangement, all o2 aux systems had been activated. I believe he said the person behind had to do the activation, which implied 5 people were conscious. That investigator also worked Apollo One right out of college and told me that sad story. How did I come by this info, I had worked on the TDRSS fuel and engine systems and when I was watching the launch, I realized immediately it was a pressure-based explosion. So for 3 days I thought I may have caused the problem and was quite distraught. A VP at the company called his good friend, the investigator I mentioned, and they called me to ket me know i had not contributed to the disaster. But I will never forget the impact of that day and how it forever changed how I dealt with setbacks.
Wow. Must have been the worst days of your life feeling that guilty.
Load More Replies...It's likely they were unconscious by then but yeah....the explosion didn't kill them.
They had to be conscious after the explosion to trigger the air packs.
Load More Replies...It was Astronaut Judy Resnik that manually switched the auxiliary O2 system, proving she was alive and conscious after the explosion. She also had to be aware of what was happening to her and her crew mates. So sad.
When I first started in mil intel in the early 90s one of my first bosses had just finished working on the analysis of the Lockerbie bombing and told me there were quite a few of the victims that were alive up until they hit the ground, most unconscious but some not. Knowing that back then gave me a fear of flying that no matter how many flights I've had to take for both work in the that career and others has never left me. Poor f*****s.
what hurts the most about the crash is that it was 100% avoidable. The engineer who designed the gasket rings placed between the rocket stages warned everyone all the way up to Prez Reagan that a gasket failure during launch was possible in the cold weather. They all discounted his advice and went ahead anyway. The Nasa manager who made the final "green light, go ahead" decision said they had to keep up with the production schedule. This is highly risky experimental space exploration with lives at stake, not churning out hot dogs in a sausage factory according to someone in marketing's production schedule. He did not understand this. If he could not understand this, he never should have held that job. As far as I know, he never had any real accountability.
That's right. The engineer who told them I heard quit before it happened because they went ahead with the launch
Load More Replies...Its worse to think about what the crash scene investigators encountered when they eventually opened the pod :(
Not any different then seeing bodies of an aircraft accident.
Load More Replies...That was a sad day. I was in school watching it in class when that happened.
However, there's something intrinsically human about seeking out gloom. Experts call it negativity bias.
In short, it's our tendency not only to register negative stimuli more readily but also to dwell on these events. Also known as positive-negative asymmetry, this negativity bias means that we feel the sting of a rebuke more powerfully than we feel the joy of praise.
As humans, we tend to:
- Remember traumatic experiences better than positive ones;
- Recall insults better than praise;
- React more strongly to negative stimuli;
- Think about negative things more frequently than positive ones;
- Respond more strongly to negative events than to equally positive ones;
So chances are, we'll see similar posts in the future as well.
I was told by a very senior police officer (a parent of a kid I taught) that it is estimated that 30% of all missing persons reported to police who are never located have been murdered and more often than not they have been murdered by the person reporting them missing in the first place. The police know this, but lack evidence to proceed with prosecutions.
What you want to believe doesn:t really affect how it is. I want to believe I'm a wealthy supermodel/ particle physicist.
Load More Replies...As the mother of a missing daughter the past 3 years sadly much of this is true. Sadly still no leads and barely any real search even knowing my daughter reached out saying who she was with and that she felt she was in danger. #FindKassandraRamirez
Oh, I am so very sorry. I just looked her story up. You must be devastated.
Load More Replies...I guess this is the reason for the fact that police often investigate the relatives of the missing person as potential suspects.
The critical part of that is the "never located". Over 99% of children reported missing in the US are found and are safe
The recovery rate for the estimated 115 children abducted by strangers in the US each year, a very small but alarming segment of children reported missing annually, is less heartening. An average of 57 percent of them come home alive and 40 percent are killed. The rest remain open cases. Many of the children reported missing are lost, runaways, injured or taken by a parent in a custody case.
Load More Replies...As the mother of a missing daughter it’s upsetting. Sadly the police can’t seem to help nor find my daughter. #FindKassndraRamirez
I just went and read about what happened. I’m sorry about your daughter. I hope her son’s doing okay and I hope you’re okay too. I wish you and the police good luck in your search.
Load More Replies...This kind of thought TERRIFIES me to NO END!!! SO SAD for all of you!!! :'(
Load More Replies...Honestly, that number seems really low. I'd think it would be closer to 70-75% but maybe it's just because I listen to many true crime podcasts
Estimates made by the authorities are always on the lower side. We all know of the government projects that were estimated at $ 5 million, but due to some minor setbacks set us back $ 125 million.
Out of all people who are reported missing each year, 87-90% are found safe. Of the 10-13% who aren't, 30% of THAT percentage are estimated to have been killed. Not that anyone being killed is acceptable, but I think there's some people who are reading that 30% of all missing people are assumed to have been killed.
Doctors used to perform heart surgery on infants without anesthesia. Thankfully this practice was ended.
In the 1980s.
In the 80's? Whose idea was it to not use anaesthesia? Whoever decided that deserves a pineapple up the ass without anaesthesia. Daily.
It was believed babies didn't feel pain and drugging them was a greater risk
Load More Replies...A recent post addressed this in depth, and the overall consensus appeared to be that publicly the medical profession took the stance that babies did not feel pain, while privately they feared the infants were at greater risk from the anesthesia itself.
My son was 2 years old when his lip was lacerated up into his nostrils. The ER doctor sewed him up without anesthesia and without any numbing of the skin with lidocaine. When I protested I was escorted out of the ER room And they proceeded with sewing him up. I was a young mother, inexperienced with the ways of the medical establishment and unaware I could file a protest etc. Also, when 3 of my infant sons were circumcised in the 1980's, it was also done without numbing the penis. I was told "the nerves aren't developed enough for it to hurt" and "they are too young to remember the pain". My eyes still fill with tears when I think about that now.
Load More Replies...This blows my mind. How could a baby survive this? You'd think the shock their bodies would go through would kill them. There has to be an explanation to this - any Bored doctors out there? Someone explain, please.
It's really hard to dose anesthesia, it could be fatal when you give people the wrong dose, and medical science didn't work out how to dose infants correctly until relatively recently.
Load More Replies...That was because of the dangers of anesthesia, and they did not know how to give it to an infant without killing them (with adults it has a high error rate and issues, considered the toughest specialty in medicine). Once they figured out how to do it safely, they then did so.
Ok. I respect that argument. But to turn around and say 'oh they don't feel pain' when that is NOT the reason they aren't using anesthesia is just sick and wrong.
Load More Replies...And today is circumcision done in newborns without anesthesia as well. And it permanently Alters the Brain.
I'm not aware of studies proving brain alteration, but I absolutely believe it.
Load More Replies...For too long the idea was that infants and children did not feel pain 'in the way adults do'. Bill sh*t. This is the only reason I refused to have my sons circumcised. If the doctor wouldn't to it to himself without anesthesia, they weren't doing it to my children. And this was when it was highly frowned upon to say NO to doctors and not do what 'everyone else was doing'.
So how did the doctors ensure the baby didn't wriggle about if it wasn't anaesthetised?
I believe I read that babies going into surgery were given a paralytic drug so they would be still.
Load More Replies...Infants don't tolerate lots of things very well and a small dose of anesthetic is probably fatal.
A lot of gyn-procedures call for anesthesia - but it's to expensive to waste on women or whatever 🙄
A Jewish doctor treated Hitler’s Mother(The only person Adolf ever truly loved) while she was dying of cancer. He promised his eternal gratitude to the doctor and even after becoming a pathological anti-Semite and later the Fuhrer, he was true to his word and was adamant the doctor and his family be placed under protection from the purge. While some may think this an act of genuine kindness, I just think about all the lives lost because Hitler never stopped to think that all Jews were capable of good and not just the one who happened to have been good to him because of immediate proximity..
Hitler probably didn't have Jews killed because he genuinely feared or hated them - he did it to give the German people a "common enemy" and basically to manipulate the public. Which is kind of worse.
Sadly the same thing is happening today and people just don't see it.
Load More Replies...That is how many racists think. The people I have personally screened are okay. This is why the excuse, "I can't be racist I have friends of that race", falls apart.
I will remember this observation. Useful for arguing with racists and self-reflection
Load More Replies...It was not the actions or inactions of Jews that doomed them. It was the insanity that one race or culture is better than another.
Just like the racists today who say "Not all ____ people are ____, I happen to have a good friend who is _____". (Fill in race of your choice). See it all the time.
All Jews were capable of good? Who the he'll wrote that!? You mean because they are human beings. Period. Saying they were capable of good is like saying some of my best friends are black. You're one of the good ones. Etc.
I think about this a lot when someone claims they aren't hateful because they are married to have a best friend or know someone who is...
To be honest most of Europe did horrible things just like Hitler (Not saying they were as bad). They basically raped Africa, the Brits beat and bullied whoever they wanted. There were major differences in wealth all over Europe. Constant wars occurred as well.
Hitler killed as many in 5 years as the brits or french did in 100

I've told my kids I have no idea what the heck I'm doing. I'm a gen X'er. We didn't have to deal with this crap when I was a kid.
Adulthood is a scam. Nobody's ever really an adult in their own head. We;re all just a bunch of kids in bigger bodies, who, generally speaking have no idea what we're doing.

Urine used to be an ingredient in stained glass.
So now whenever I see old churches with stained glass, I think of piss-stained rainbow windows.
All colors were "fixed" with urine. There used to be "piss pots" out front of dyers. Men would stop, piss in the pot and the dyer would collect the urine to soak dyed cloths in. That would "fix" the color.
Some smaller companies still do this the traditional way. Also "being blue" means being drunk in German for the same reason - because people working with color needed to drink a lot to be able to piss enough. From the same source also comes "making blue" in German, which means to skip work or school - because dyers had big gaps in their work schedule, where they just had to wait.
Load More Replies...Urine was used for lots of things, including preserving, pickling, tanning of leather and skins. It's a useful commodity.
It's also a very useful cleaning agent. If you leave it to sit, it effectively becomes ammonia, and can be used as a cleaning/bleaching agent in laundry.
Load More Replies...Urine used to be a commodity. You'd save it and sell it. The very poor couldn't do this because they literally were so poor, "they didn't have a pot to piss in".
Urine has been a valuable commodity all thru history. It was used in laundering clothing, setting dyes, tanning leather and making gunpowder, among other things. During the Civil War, it was considered your patriotic duty to collect urine for munitions manufacture.
There is micro plastic in everything you eat and drink. Even the air you breathe contains plastic

Load More Replies..."If you cannot afford an attorney one will be provided for you" doesnt mean the attorney is free
True, and it also doesn't mean they're any good. Most of them put zero effort into actually defending you and instead just encourage you to plead guilty and take the prosecutor's offer. Interesting that the judge, the prosecutor, and your court-appointed lawyer are all on the same payroll.
I worked with PDs at a local courthouse once. Most of them are genuinely well meaning, hard working and trying their best (some are just padding a resume, they suck). The problem is that they can have 20 clients to represent in the same day, and sometimes don't even get the reports till the day of the hearing. The system is just lip service to fair justice, but it's too expensive to do properly, so they just "United States it" and do a half assed job.
Load More Replies...no idea why you were downvoted. It's correct. This is obviously a usa-only issue.
Load More Replies...Not true in the UK. If you're poor, you get your lawyer for free. Any civilised country would do the same thing.
In America, public defenders are free as well.
Load More Replies...Highlighting one of the reasons why the American judicial system needs to be overhauled simply because it favors the wealthy. I think the public defender system should be eradicated completely and attorneys out to be made to take a couple of public defender cases every year as part of their practice. There has just got to be a better way
Where I live there's a sliding fee scale. You have to pay what they deem you can afford.
A court appointed attorney works for the Court....NOT YOU and is paid by the Court....not you...so you get some pretty lousy representation....been there done that.
The average polar bear liver contains enough Vitamin A to kill 52 adults.

Load More Replies...This means at one time a scientist studying polar bears though wow there is a lot of vitamin A in the liver. How many people could it kill and did the math. Seems suspicious.
I think it's from when people were trapped in expeditions and starving, eating a polar bear and dying mysteriously.
Load More Replies...Or the fact that Polar Bears will disappear from this planet sooner rather than later.
Their numbers are increasing according to a biologist who has bern stufying and tracking them in the Canadian northwest but media only ever show you pics of a post hibernation skinny guy to scare you. Also, they're mating with black bears.
Load More Replies...For a short period of time in the mid-1980's, carrot chips were marketed as a healthy alternative snack to potato chips. Turns out the process to make them concentrated the amount of vitamin A to the point that if someone ate too many (one bag by themselves) the result would be a bit toxic. They were around for only about 9 months.
One of the most toxic chemicals on Earth is an organic mercury compound. The material safety sheet notes that it has a slightly sweet odor, but at a concentration where the smell is detectable, it is already lethal. That observation came from someone who would inevitably die from accidental exposure.
That reminds me of that Far Side Cartoon....anyone with me?
Load More Replies...I remember reading an article in a popular science magazine about that. Karen Wetterhahn died from it. She got a tiny little droplet on her glove and that killed her - even though she immediately noticed it and took decontamination measures. She died some months later.
Watched a video about Karen Wetterhahn on youtube. I recommend looking her up if you want to see how horrifying a single drop can be
That's probably also a reason the "don't smell anything in the lab" rule exists...

So it's true, vending machine kills more human than shark in a year
We must start a vending machine hunt to kill all the vending machines.

I remember being told eggs have a protein structure so similar to our blood that you could use blood as an egg substitute in cakes etc.
Really wish I wasn't told that
Or you could just use bananas. For blood transfusions, of course. And muffins.
You know what works as an egg white substitute (especially in cocktails like the wkisky sour and gin fizz)? Aquafaba, which is the liquid when you drain a can of chickpeas. Two tablespoons aquafaba equals one egg white.
Good to know! I'll do anything to avoid a raw egg.

Dolphins are clearly way too smart to be completely innocent, as we are.
Once a species becomes clever it learns the capacity for evil

People dying often smell sweet. Not in a sugary way, but much more in flowery way. It's the decompositions of the body already starting. It can also smell vaguely like alcohol, especially their breath
i know this! not just people, but animals too. sometimes weeks in advance. if u smell this, u can predict death with almost 100% accuracy. :(
Me and my husband are farmers (him lifelong, me since I married him *mumble* years ago) - he can smell when an animal is going to die within the next day or so. It's a blessing really because it makes it so much easier to decide on the most compassionate course of action.
Load More Replies...I believe this to be something only certain people can smell though. I have been a continuous care hospice nurse for about 15 years, meaning I sit at the bedside of patients to help maintain their comfort during their final moments (12 hour shifts). There is definitely a smell that many patients will have while dying a natural death. However to me it is never floral or pleasantly sweet, but while in the same room another person may comment of this beautiful fragrance. I have no deficient in my sense of smell in general. I don’t like the version I smell.
This is probably ketones building up in the blood from kidney failure
Load More Replies...during my dear Mama's last hours before death (June 2013), she exuded a strong vinegar odor; breath, skin everywhere. By the way, she also had visitation from my brother, who had passed in 1999. My sweet senior pup is in her last days, and we have noticed our crazy puppy being exceedingly gentle with her and sniffing her constantly. 😢

Load More Replies...My darling, darling old cat smelled like fallen autumn leaves in the end. One morning I knew for sure that she was going to go that day, partly because that sweet, peaceful scent was even stronger. I held her all day and later I kept the top I was wearing in a sealed bag. I could smell her on it for months and it helped a bit with the pain. That sad but oddly comforting smell will never be gone from my memory.
Nurses can go into a room with a dying patient and immediately smell death on them. It comes with practice....lots and lots of practice.
Some nursing homes & hospices use pet cats as comfort animals. Their job is to go around to the residents & give them hugs & love. Sometimes these cats park themselves overnight in bed with a resident, who dies the next day. No, they are not murder cats. They can predict when someone will die within 24 hours. This explains it.
I could smell this from my grandma when she was dying of cancer. I was the only one in a room of 12 people who could smell it. I thought I was going crazy.
I completely agree and believe you. My husband fought pancreatic cancer for nearly six years. His last few months, he has this sickly sweet smell to him. Cancer really does have a smell when it takes over the body and It changed to a more pungent, sharp smell a few days before he passed away. I knew by that change that it was his time at age 39.
Load More Replies...I'll agree to disagree here. My neighbor, years ago, was ailing and had a fall a bunch of years back. I heard it through the wall and helped his wife get him to bed. I went home and smelled what can only be likened to actual death on my skin and clothes, so I bathed and washed them. The smell remained, seeping through the walls it seemed. He died a day later in that same bed and the smell didn't leave the house until about a week afterward. It was most certainly not sweet, but rather the most putrid, noxious smell I think I have ever had the displeasure of imprinting on my brain.
It might smell differently to different people but still be the same smell.

The fungus that can take over a bug's brain and turn them into basically a real life zombie ant
The last of us fungus was based on these real life fungi. Another fun one is that parasite that manipulates brains and makes mice and rats fall in love with cats with of course fatal consequences. Humans can get them too and it is essentially a source of crazy cat ladies.

The worse parasite IMHO (rarely humble) is called Chagas Disease, a beetle called an assassin bug will bite you near your mouth while you are sleeping, this is why it is commonly called a “kissing bug” if the assassin bug carries a parasite, you are doomed. The parasite can take decades to do enough damage for you to produce symptoms, by then, it’s too late. The parasite prefers making its reproduction nest out of your heart and lungs. The only way to test is to get bit by the beetle raised in a sterile lab, then have the beetles poop tested, which basically only tells you that your days are numbered.

You can grow teeth on your ovaries.
I have one of those, a terratoma. I could have it removed, but it's not bothering me and I like the looks I get when I tell people I have teeth on my ovaries.
Since I've had two of them, have them at least controlled because they can become malign and can grow. They can also have effects on your hormone levels.
Load More Replies...This is what causes cramps, it's really just your ovaries grinding their teeth!
Teratoma. You can grow hair or teeth on your ovaries or testicles, and also in your brain. You're welcome !
They grow in the ovary, in dermoid cysts. Basically they are stem cells that started to develop into specific tissue. It can happen in testicles too, but then they are usually malign. In ovaries they are typically harmless. I had one in my left and one in my right ovary and were removed. Both contained bone, fat, and hair tissue.
Just genuinely asking here - how does one detect this? Is it painful or picked up on scans?
Load More Replies...It's called a teratoma. Interestingly, I was diagnosed with having one about a week ago. It's a kind of non-cancerous tumour made of cells that randomly specialise to be bone or hair. I have teeth in my right ovary! :D
Decomposing bodies:
Generally, it could take about a year for the body to decompose into a skeleton in ordinary soil and eight to twelve years to decompose a skeleton.
And if a dead body is inside a coffin and buried deep underground, it could even take 50 years to decompose all tissues on the body.
Yet if you leave it in the tub of a non air conditioned apartment you get soup in like what, eight days?
I know a lot of people will disagree but burying our dead is a waste money and land.
I plan to be composted. Here's hoping I become fertilizer for a sequoia.
Load More Replies...Depends on the soil. It's fascinating to see the bodies that have been recovered from peat soil, still largely intact after 2,000 years or more. Apparently sandy soil is more acidic and reduces a body to bones quickly, which is why ancient human remains are rarely found in desert countries.
I have questions. Then why we use coffins? And what’s about hundreds of years old skeletons, digged out by archeologists?
And if the ground is to moist it can lead to a "wax"-like state of the decomposing corpse instead of completly rotting away.
It takes 8 pounds of pressure to tear off a human ear; a force approximately equivalent to crushing a soda can.
To itch my earlobe when I have earrings on I pull on my earring a little bit... yeah that's not gonna happen anymore
I met a girl once, whose ear had been sliced off when a man had picked her up in a pub (just messing about drunk) and dropped against a juke box
Mine was almost sliced at the age of six when a classmate pulled my earring! (We were piercing ears very young in the 90's) thankfully the earring wasn't good quality and broke

the surgery with the highest mortality rate was 300%. how did this happen? well, there was a surgeon called Robert Liston who was famous for his fast amputations, and when I say fast I'm talking 30 seconds to 1 minute surgeries, 180x faster than amputations now (this happened in the 1800's). one day he was performing an amputation but accidentally amputated much more than he should have, due to the fact that the patient was thrashing about in pain while assistants held them down as there was no anasthetic at the time. he was amputating so fast that he cut through his assistant's finger. the surgical tools were probably dirty as both the patient an the assistant died of infections. as for the third guy, people enjoyed watching Liston preform surgeries and he was at the front of the crowd. Liston slashed the spectator's coat, which supposedly caused the spectator to die of shock (likely a heart attack).
TL:DR doctor amputated guy, cuts assistant and slashed spectator's coat, causing all 3 to die.
Btw to anyone who might be wondering, they would usually hack it off. So there you go
Total concentration, docter breathing, 3rd form, triple death
Why would you bother with an amputation when most patients died anyway?

A person split in half by the stomach doesn't die instantly. It has some lastly moments of suffering. Source: a person was hit by a train and split in half in front of me. He took some time to die.
Surprisingly common at subway and train stations, when people fall into the gap between the platform and a moving car. The friction of the moving car twists the torso around and around, essentially separating the upper and lower halves but leaving them connected. With a ruined spinal cord, the victim feels little pain and remains alert. First responders hate these incidents because they know that the only way to get the victim out--which has to be done--is by moving the train. The instant the pressure is released, the victim dies, even though they FEEL okay up to the last instant. It's a horrible scene for everyone involved.

Those bitter, sour, or otherwise nasty tasting pistachios had a worm, larva, or some other pest in them. I always assumed that I just needed to deal with a couple spoiled pistachios per bag and it’s no big deal. Nope. Larvae. I’ve never had pistachios since learning this.
I bit into a pear as as very small child (one of my earliest memories), and showed my mom that there was half a worm where I'd bitten. She told me it was just protein and was full of the pear it had just been eating, and just shrugged like "it's fine". Even so, it took me decades before I could eat a fresh pear again without slicing it up and inspecting it first. So it made quite an impression on me anyway - maybe because it was such a rare occurrance, in that it only happened once, so other fruits seemed "safe" and only that one seemed not?

I love it when some ex military dude on a podcast gets quoted as if his claims are fact.
For all the people saying this isn't true because a military guy said this - yes, the powergrid is indeed that vulnerable. It doesn't take much for grids to overcharge, and due to them being linked and covering a wide area they are the weakest link in any country's infrastructure. (There was an incident here in Europe in November 2006 - one line was shut down here in Germany and the overcharge caused a 2 hour blackout all through middle Europe)
While I do not know how true this is, apparently, our power grids are very weak as many are past upgrades of 20 years or more. They are hard to access and cross state lines that makes fixing them difficult.

Being a cannibal isn't/wasn't unacceptable everytime, everywhere. Various cultures practiced endo-cannibalisme either to absorb the strenght/energy of their lost ones, either because of the lack of protein supplies. Kuru was identified among the Fore on an Island where antropophagia was part of the funeral rite. That's very inaccurate. Kuru was only ever observed in one population on earth. They practiced funary cannibalism. One of the theories is that they had one sufferer of Creutzfeldt-Jabcob's among them at one point and the prions just spread through their cannibalistic rituals.
During the Black Death, people would be so infected with the plague that the buboes (those lumps) that you could hear them gurgling with bacteria

This explanation is wrong. It takes longer for the tissue to burn fully so it has to be at its highest temperature for a longer time, risking overheating the equipment. They have to keep an eye out for this and a lower temperature overall might be the way to keep the equipment safe. The temperature of fat burning is not high enough to combust the material fully, there's also a lot of water and other material within the fatty tissue layers. The smoking point of lard, for comparison is 190 degrees celsius, a cremation oven reaches about 900-1000 degrees celsius. So it's not the fat burning, it's controling the temperature because of the time it takes for the extra tissue.
Do basically if you create crematorium that burns only obese people, you will have more profitable business.
Also, you cannot cremate someone with a pacemaker or the crematorium goes Boom!
Yes it does. It was definitely unnecessary and a morbidly gross joke, but made sense for sure.

The problem with these hybrid orangutans is while they are fertile, they suffer numerous health issues and allowing them to continue to breed will result in the orangutan population to diminish even more
Most zoos that have Orangutans have done genetic testing and health workups and those are checked and rechecked and then checked against the other Orangutans eligible for breeding. It's how the Species Survival Plan works. Breeding of any endangered animal is done very carefully

4% of people on Death Row are innocent.
4% are proven to be innocent and have their convictions overturned. There's no way of knowing how many are innocent but unable to prove it.
I think the percentage is much, much higher than that. The preponderance of people on death row in the USA, are men, those of colour, and those whose educational level stops around elementary/primary school. The more organizations like the Innocence Project that exist, the more we see that too many of these people were tried, convicted and sentenced without proper evidence, because they didn't have the means to fight back against the system.
And I'll bet that there is even a higher percentage among long-term prisoners who are NOT on death row, especially those who had court appointed attorneys.

But FBI and Police at the time were happy with having caught someone and just withheld witness-statements (one of them being an alibi for one of the men) and other evidence that could have proven their innocence (would have, more likely) and it turns out that those two men had to spend 20 YEARS in prison until they were released and NOW someone actually said "Oh... whoops?" One of them men died a few years ago, and the other is 83. A life stolen because police was not just sloppy but criminally incompetent and too eager to just get anyone convicted. And I bet you they would have executed them if there had been the death penalty for murder.
Load More Replies...Indeed, death penalty is wrong on all levels but this might be the top one.
There's an interesting tech in japan (google Kamitani labs) which does mind reading. Apparently they can tell if you recognise something. So: take the accused. Show them the victim's face. See if they recognise it.
Assuming that they didn't see the victim's face a thousand times at trial.

Which is of course still too much. That's the reason I'm against death penalty - I'm not arguing that there are crimes deserving death - only that I don't want government to have a power to kill people.

There is faecal matter eeeeeeeeverywhere
That people who drown in confined spaces will claw the skin off the bone of their fingers trying to get out. They sometimes claw their own throats open.
This pertains to any method to dying in a confined space. At Auschwitz (not sure I spelt that right) you can see nail marks in the walls in the gas chambers.
Takes 3hrs for a 180lb human to completely dissolve in a bathtub of potassium hydroxide.
Fun fact: You can buy potassium hydroxide online right now! I can buy a 1 kg tub of the stuff for R59 [$3.76] and get free shipping.
Looks like wrong chemicals are under surveilance. If you want to buy 1litre of H2O2 you have to show your ID and get written into a special book. :-( I love it for cleaning our bathroom.
Load More Replies...It causes an exothermic reaction so no need for outside heat.

If you sniff any odor, it means a tiny amount of the sniffed matter entered your nose.
Therefore if you sniff vomit ...
Technically, when you smell vomit, you smell butyric acid. It's also in Parmigiano cheese, which is why it also has a vomit like smell. It's best to be smelled when you open a bag of grated Parmigiano. How do I know that? Chemistry teacher. Sometimes I let my students smell the acid. ;)
Some American chocolate makers use butyric acid as a preservative, so it's no wonder Europeans think Hershey's tastes like barf.

During the cold war British tornado pilots where told not to worry about having enough fuel to return to base as there wouldnt be a base to return to after the first 2 hours of war
do you mean take their plane and park it at home? The homes would be destroyed by the nuclear war they were anticipating back then.
Load More Replies...Tornadoes are able to carry nuclear weapons - when they where on long range missions it would have meant that the base already got hit by one
Load More Replies...Not really. It shows how the military brass was aware of the reality of a nuclear war...
Load More Replies...I believe this is in the event actual hostilities broke out. As in a nuclear exchange. Air fields would most likely be priority one targets.
Load More Replies...When you are cremated the ovens do not melt your bones. The fragments are put in to a blender and pulverised in to the ash that we think of with cremation
Firstly, bones don't melt. Secondly, most of the bones are cremated to ash, but some fragments are left that are indeed finely ground up in a blender-type machine. It's not like your flesh is cremated and then your entire skeleton is put in a blender.
Some of these 'facts' here must come from second graders whispering nonsense to each other at recess.
Load More Replies...wanna put my skeleton in a blender watch it it spin around into a beautiful Obilivion. Rendeveau and I'm through with you.
The ash absorbs moisture from the air and solidifies over time. Waiting too long to sprinkle Uncle John's ashes will mean having to use a hammer or returning the urn to have them ground again. Let's all take a hammer to mama's remains so she can rest in pieces
they can creamate the bone to ash, that is not allowed by law because they require the ashes to be able to be DNA tested, but the Nazis had ovens hot enough the destroyed the bone to ash and eliminated any DNA evidence.
Where did you get this from? The cremation furnaces used by the Nazis only reached about 1000°C and most bodies were just burned in "cremation pits".
Load More Replies...That if you think or imagine licking anything it doesn’t matter what it is, you just know what it feels like, your tongue just knows.
Yeah it’s written really stupidly, but I think it’s saying like, if you see a metal pole, you can imagine what the texture of it would feel like on your tongue even if you’ve never licked a pole before, and you can imagine the metallic taste because your brain knows what metal tastes like, approximately.

Poster says that although you've never licked a tree you can probably imagine very well how that experience would be. Gritty, strangely "not cold", earthy. You KNOW it but you've never done it. That is some weird skill to have

Load More Replies...So tell me; what would it feel like licking the edge of a serrated knife dripping with rubbing alcohol? Because I actually don't know
I have the unbridled curse of knowing exactly what something will both taste and feel like just by looking at it, so I will answer. The alcohol hurts more than the knife does, since licking alcohol tastes EXTREMELY unpleasant. But licking a serrated knife, while being a bad idea, won't hurt you as long as you don't press too hard and it's a relatively old knife.
Load More Replies...After the Tienemann Square Massacre. To get rid of the bodies, Chinese tanks drove over them and "pancaked" them so troops could easily just use hoses to wash them into the gutters
This seems like an urban legend. I've seen enough "pancaked" roadkill to know it is still pretty chunky and not really able to be washed off. Even with a high pressure hose it would be stringy and get stuck in drains.
Not to mention it'd clog up the tank's wheels after a while, it's far easier to just haul a body away than it is to reduce it to washable mush.
Load More Replies...I've seen things pancaked by other heavy machinery. Not much difference between a combine or a backhoe and a tank weight wise. And my brother had a coworker get run over by a bulldozer. He was not that squished and certainly not able to just be hosed off the side walk.

Don't look at them as facts. Look at (some of) them as either the alternative view or even the lateral version of something. For instance, instead of worrying about microplastics in the air, consider that you are actually inhaling it from your own clothing. Either way, feel free to disregard 90% of these. It's not like we can actually do anything about them anyway.
