Mistakes and accidents are unavoidable. They're part of our lives. But don't worry, this isn't an insurance ad. It's a piece on the subreddit ‘That Looked Expensive.’
It's an online community, where people share photos, gifs, and videos of mistakes, accidents, catastrophes, and disasters that cost a small fortune.
We're talking a supercar storage catching fire, children knocking over a $70K sculpture, and many more hilarious, er, I mean, costly mishaps. Continue scrolling to check them out and take a look at Bored Panda's earlier article on the subreddit after you're done, too!

Rattlesnake Bite In The US
EVERYTHING about our(the American) healthcare system is ridiculous.
Load More Replies...I wonder what the 'special' services are... maybe a bandaid? F**k I hate American health care and the desperation it breeds. I can't get over the comparison of if 'breaking bad' had been a Canadian show it would have been a 10 minute episode that ended with covered cancer treatment
Yeah "Mr White-you have cancer-take this to the hospital on Monday" show over folks...
Load More Replies...I'm so, SO glad I live in Australia. Okay, we have more venomous snakes, but if you get bitten the hospital won't charge you a cent for saving your life.
I thought you would say that in Australia the snake will definitely kill you and you won't have to pay a thing😅😅
Load More Replies...I could do 5 surgeries in Europe in a private clinic with these money seriously! So if i ever see a snake in USA it better kill me immediately right?
Probably lots and lots of anti-venom!
Load More Replies...If you think you're well-off because you work hard and all those homeless people are just jerk-offs, take another look at this. What are you gonna do if you just lose $150,000 one day because you are bit by a snake or because your kidneys decide they don't like that medicine? There is ONE unlucky day between you and bankruptcy and the sooner you absorb that fact, the better we'll all be.
Because this is all a scam. They have astronomical prices, give insurance companies discount rates so if you have health insurance you pay a small copay (or nothing), and if you have no insurance and no money some tax payer funded program ends up paying the astronomical price to the hospital -- or worst case scenario, they can claim those massive amounts as operating losses so they don't pay taxes. Meanwhile if you have money and no insurance, like happened to a friend of mine who was in between jobs when he had appendicitis, you're on the hook for the whole thing. He was charged over $60k... 25 years ago. I can't imagine how much it would be today. The system is beyond broken, and they're using our own money to pay lobbyists and bribe politicians to maintain the status quo. Of course they've also convinced the idiots who listen to fox news and trump that we have the best healthcare in the word and "socialized medicine" means "death panels". We are stupid.
Load More Replies...My wife got a bill yesterday for $1768.00 for a blood test. Our insurance will pay it, but honestly, it's just ridiculous.
But "socialized medicine" is such a dirty phrase here. It's as sickening as it is embarrassing. HOORAY CAPITALISM!
Pharmacy was how much? THe hell did they give this patient? Meth? But then again seeing Radiology fee this looks overpriced as hell. This should be around $20-30 tops.
Lab services $22K, yup, looks like a bite to me! Immediate Care Room, waiting several hours to be seen by doctor while waiting for lab results. ICU, finally getting treatment. Pharmacy, special made serum that's made in small quantities; probably cost $50 to actually make each dose. Emergency care service, ambulance charge. Physical Therapy, wear this sling.
This is crazy. In the US, there are different pay structures for self pay, insurance, etc. The price should be the price, but it isn't. You really can't afford NOT to have insurance in the US. And if this snake bite happened on someone else's property or on the job, then there would be a lengthy lawsuit too.
In Spain this would have costed 0$, the healthcare system covers anything necessary as long as it's not a whim (i.e. beauty treatments like liposuction, chest implants...). Since every citizen can use it the waiting list can be very long, there are also private companies if you are willing to pay to be treated sooner, but the quality of the free one is equally good.
You have diabetic people here who can't afford insulin they need to live, because we've allowed a private company to become the sole supplier of this generic drug through mergers and acquisitions, and then use his monopoly situation to inflate the price. So yes the system is literally killing people.
Load More Replies...And in Britain and many other countries around the world this have been FREE!!!!!
now I get it why you love to climb Velebit when you come to Croatia - if you get lost or snake bites you - rescue is FREE + you get FREE helicopter ride with amazing view of our beautiful islands
We in Slovenia pay €35/month for health insurance and everything is free.
I have seen reported cases where thee patient requested an itemized bill. In those cases, the bill was drastically lowered or eliminated. But I am now a Medicare For All guy. The NPR report was spot-on. We *really* need a serious change in healthcare. One of the *fundamental* issues is most hospitals are for-profit. Roughly half of the money goes to "profit".
Now I wonder how many actually choose to die rather than spend their life in debt :(
Did they need to go to the moon for the anti-venom? Probably $20.00 in Cuba.
Any Republicans want to tell me again about how universal healthcare will cost too much?
That's the same amount my parents paid for their house a 4 bedroom bungalow set on 2/3 of an acre of land in 1987.
I'm glad I live in the UK, with the (free) National Health Service. I certainly couldn't have afforded all the medical treatment I've had lately. And more to come. Hospital next week for a mastectomy.
Husband bitten by one of the most venomous snakes in Australia a few years ago. Cost? $000,000
This is sick! Since when is it so expensive to survive such a dangerous animal?
We're going to negotiation and then to court. $83,341.25 for the pharmacy bill?
Holy crap!!! I'll have to make sure I never get bitten by a rattlesnake!
And that was 2015!! I would love to see a comparison bill from another country. Just pure curiosity.
In 5 days !!!!! If you don't pay, you loose your house, cars, everything, your underwear included.
If you have no insurance, you can literally send in a small amount a month and they can't send it to collections. Basically, they're going to have to write it off. The ER HAS to treat you, even if you don't have any insurance or money. They just send you rediculous bills afterwards in the hopes you'll pay it.
Do you ever thing the bill is padded? I've heard that they do Treatments that are completely unnecessary. Radiology for a snake bite? Wooooo special services (wonder what that means? Son, you got bit twice.
This is just unbelievable, to have to choose if to go to the hospital or not for fear of a huge bill in this day and age is awful, nobody should have to pay for healthcare, especially when it’s life or death
the person is unfortunate enough already to be bitten by a rattlesnake. why add to their misfortunes with such a hefty bill? what will they do now? sue the snake?
That seems crazy, even for the US with our f***ed up for profit health care system
So the US has this kind of thing and ranks low in a lot of categories but you have freedom so that solves it.
If the cost of your funeral is cheaper than the cost of your medical care, then something is seriously wrong.
Omg seriously. How can anyone except the super rich even afford to live in America? If the snake bite doesn't kill you the medical bills will.
in Australia (where rattlesnake venom would be considered "Mild") this would have cost you nothing . Mational healthcare system you see . All anti venom that goes out of date in hospitals is used by Veninarians . Costs about $1000 a dose .
For one hospital vial, the price is around $2,300. A typical treatment dose? That requires four to six vials. So for a single, smaller rattlesnake bite that would need four vials of antivenom, the cost is $9,200
I still can't believe it when I see these US hospital bills, awful stuff, that would cost me a few quid for the medication and I would get as many paid days off work as I needed, not that we have rattlesnakes here but you get what I mean.
U.S people, ALWAYS ask for a fully itemised bill. You'll find they are trying to charge you ridiculous amounts for things (ie, $10 per individual glove used) and hiding it in the summery charges. By getting them to itemise everything and justify the charges they often reduce them.
This is sickening. People complain about the healthcare system in NZ letting people fall through the cracks, but heck I'm grateful for what we have compared to this!
“What a perfectly reasonable amount to charge for our services!” -American health care
I'd tell that hospital to kiss the crack of my a**. Then I'd send them 5$ a month.
My sister and I both had to have surgery this year. She lives in the USA, I do not. She has to pay $500 (the rest is covered by her insurance) after a 2 day hospital stay. I was in the hospital for 4 days and have to pay around 40€ (you have to pay 10€ per day you are staying in the hospital up to a certain amount).
The bill for this in the U.K. would be £0. A. We have the NHS and B. We don’t have rattlesnakes 😆
Little tip when getting hospital bills in US, always ask them to provide an itemized bill. Most likely they will reduce the prices plus you might have a possibility to dispute some charges if you can find other places prices cheaper (aka match it). Worked a couple of times for me
Correction. 20k. Still ridiculous. Did one had to pay this bill in full?
Load More Replies...The real fail is the government thinking it's cool to charge for healthcare.
I see this a lot and honestly find it normal from how long I've been in the US paying medical bills my whole life
But sure... Continue to complain because you're not being called the pronoun you made up...
Yet, one more reason not to, “play,” with venomous snakes.
I would have probably just let the snake finish me off at this point...
Sometimes, I wish I didn't live in America (this is one of the few reasons)
I don't really believe this. 83 grand for the pharmacy isn't going to be more costly than radiology and definitely not more than ICU
I had a very short job with an health insurance company. It's amazing what insurance companies refuse to pay and almost always was a very necessary service. I had people begging and crying on the phone after an old man was crying and saying he'll die without my approval I stopped working there I never had any power to change policy and I wanted too
this is what happens when you have a government created for and catering to wealth. it's pert near f*****g impossible to change anything
I think that i understand now that some people in the South of US wear them on boots. It's revenge. lol
We all know the system is f****d, but for god's sake, have insurance. The ACA is there. people would rather pay the fine then buy subsidized insurance. I broke my hip in 3 places, had 4 surgeries, months of rehab and i paid maybe $150.
Good Lord! It would be much cheaper to just die. I bet the Radiology and Special Services bill was just for going past their doors.
If the Left gets their way, it won't be long!
Load More Replies...Here we go again. Someone puts another opportunity up to trash our healthcare system. We KNOW. Here’s what many DON’T know: just tell the hospital you can’t pay it. You’ll be amazed at what they’ll negotiate down to.
How is it ok for healthcare costs to be negotionable?! Doesn't that mean they're ripping you off in the first place?
Load More Replies...Does it say anywhere on there rattlesnake bite? This bill could be for anything.
THis was debunked years ago, this was altered, the person only paid $500, this is what the insurance paid out and told him, as per legal requirement.
Note the payment is due in full in 14 days. $153, 161 due in 14 days.
I've always wondered what they do if you don't or can't pay, put the poison back in? I'll die thanks, it won't bankrupt my grandchildren
No they don't put the poison back in. If you're poor at the time of the injury they apply for a government grant to pay it. If you have too much money to qualify as poor (which isn't very much) they sue you and garnish your wages. If you have money, than you have good insurance which pays it. This is one of the main reasons the middle class is disappearing.
Load More Replies...They've got a bargain. I've seen US hospital bills for a snakebite to the amount of $250 000.
Thank God for those guys who figured out anti-venom!! I think that’s why the pharmacy part of this bill is so high because they have to buy the venom from the people who milk the snakes for it. Yikes!! *For those of you who don’t know it’s not like milking a cow they actually have to get the snake to stick its fangs in a container to release the venom, they called that milking a snake. I would prefer milking a cow

The lesson is that you don't buy a McLaren because even when you know ow to handle it, someone else will crash into it. Or when you store it safe the whole place will burn down. So you see the McLaren, you don't buy and just walk away and buy yourself a bloody Kia for 1% of the price of a McLaren

None of this even comes close to the most expensive accident in history, the Chernobyl reactor meltdown. Nor the most expensive conflict in history, World War II. World Wars aren't small failures with relatively big impacts. Their dynamics are immense and hardly start at one specific point in time. They are huge mistakes with huge impacts. Chernobyl was enormous and also not just one person making one mistake. There were structural problems in understanding what the huck they were doing. This list is mostly about stupid small mistakes that end up with a big price tag.
