Mistakes and accidents are unavoidable. They're part of our lives. But don't worry, this isn't an insurance ad. It's a piece on the subreddit That Looked Expensive.’

It's an online community, where people share photos, gifs, and videos of mistakes, accidents, catastrophes, and disasters that cost a small fortune.

We're talking a supercar storage catching fire, children knocking over a $70K sculpture, and many more hilarious, er, I mean, costly mishaps. Continue scrolling to check them out and take a look at Bored Panda's earlier article on the subreddit after you're done, too!

This kind of reminds me of an old joke, with the number on the grill being upside down. Bear with me, I’m terrible at telling jokes! The local lake has a new guy on the boat rental stand. He’s got his little megaphone and he’s making sure the boats come back on time. “Number 91, bring your boat back, your time is up” “Number 91, please come in your time is up” Manager “we’ve only got 20 boats!” Trainee “Number 16 are you in trouble?” I did warn you! If you made it this far please groan and remember that’s a minute of your life you won’t get back. No refunds!

Reminds me of another one: Two military pilots left base in a helicopter. Later, one radios in and says, "We need you to send another helicopter. This one won't fly." Base replies, "What's wrong with it? Why won't it fly?" "Well, we have a disagreement on that. My co-pilot says it won't fly because it's under water. I say it won't fly because it's upside down."

I get the irony, but there is a difference between grounding a plane to work on it and it being able to continue flying after such an event - it has 4 engines and would be able to fly on just two.

Especially since it is a military aircraft, not subject to the safety practices of the airline industry. In an operational capacity, they'd have continued with their mission after striking the bird.

Yes, little ole wind did all that. I work for an insurance company and I can confirm that wind damage is one of most expensive risks to cover and causes more damage each year than any other type of peril. I would need to look it up, but I believe wind damage causes something like 34% of all homeowner claims.

The salvage company did it with chains, basically large saws. They pull them under and around the hull, lifting as they cut deeper. There is a Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifMT70bM1G0

What are you gonna do if you just lose $150,000 one day because you are bit by a snake or because your kidneys decide they don't like that medicine? I've noticed that insurance companies tend not to understand what to do with antique automobiles, even though such cars have special antique-car insurance. They tend to 'total' things with would not be difficult repairs, given the difficulty already gone-through in restoring such an automobile.

The steel Model T snapped a couple tie rods but the engine compartment looks good. The modern vehicle looks like it took way more damage and will end up totaled. Although it'll no longer be as original or special, I think the model T is at least repairable.

Easy repair on the Ford. The Model T was designed to be repairable by the local blacksmith and the local carpenter - there was nobody else around. A guy I used to go shooting with bought a T chassis, engine and radiator and built himself a "Doctor's Town Car" - he even made the wooden artillery wheel. Local Ford dealer had it on display in his showroom for 6 months, people kept asking "How much?"

I read about this a while ago. The platform was in the process of being tugged to where it's needed when a storm got so bad that the tugboats had to cut the ropes to not endanger their crews. So no, no uncapped well (also they have safety valves that *should* cap the well if due to some reason the pipe gets damaged/torn off).

This is a deliberate re-staging of an actual accident, used to create a crew training film. The "real" incident happened the year before when a deck hand re-spotted a Royal Navy Buccaneer jet on an aircraft carrier deck but to save time he didn't brake it or chain it down before he disconnected the towing vehicle. One unexpected Atlantic swell later... splash!

I saw this picture before, and it's actually deliberate. Part of the making of a safety film. Found some info after image search : "Deliberately dropped into the English Channel off HMS Ark Royal during the making of a Royal Navy safety film about the accidental loss of XT269 (031/R) from Ark Royal 15/2/1972 (which see). The safety training film re-staged the accident, and showed what to do to prevent it happening again"

This Buccaneer had already been used at a ground training establishment before being SOC (struck off charge). The incident being recreated happened in 1972. Now I'm not saying the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm were careless that year but between them they wrote off 58 aircraft. My favourite story was the RAF Harrier that took a bird strike over West Germany. The pilot ejected but the plane flew on for 40 minutes before crashing near the town of Hutten.

We currently have massive floods around the area I live in (luckily I live in downtown of a big city and am not affected at all - kinda surreal to know people dying in floods just outside the city and not seeing anything out of the ordinary looking out the window) with whole towns washed off the map. Friend works as a fire fighter and showed some pictures and videos, in the end they basically had to watch people get flushed away and abandon towns that still had residents around and couldn't do anything because they couldn't reach them - military and helicopters were dispatched, then nightfall came in. I can easily imagine something like this happening to some of the fire fighters.

I'm so sorry this sort of calamity is happening in your area. It's both a good and bad thing about human nature that we joke about even the most traumatic events in order to cope. Please know that since we don't know the story behind the photo, it's best to hope that the crew and those they were called out to assist escaped unharmed.

Need some context with this. Wonder what the cause of the accident was? Negligence, drunk driving, cellphone inattention, heart attack, mechanical issue, run off the road? The cause will dictate liability. Maybe totaling a dozen new cars was the less catastrophic choice.

They were pouring the concrete floor when the supports collapsed in the center. If you look at the bottom front you can see some of the wet concrete. It looks like it fell hard enough to take out a couple floors below it as well. Wet concrete is very, very heavy and this is not an uncommon failure (although seldom on such a large scale.)

True story: my grandfather was a lovely man but a terrible driver, eventually his family convinced him to stop driving he got into so many accidents. Anyway one day he was driving through the east end of London and somehow managed to crash his car into a house, went through the wall and into the front room. He got out, miraculously unharmed to see the owner calmly sitting in an armchair. My grandfather apologised profusely and said he would pay for the damage, only to have the elderly lady in the armchair say "That's alright darling, we're moving out tomorrow, they're knocking the whole place down. Do you want a cup of tea?"

It really hurts when Mother Nature does this kind of thing. Last year, knowing a windstorm was coming, I had a choice to park outside underneath a number of giant, old trees or in my carport (closed in on one side). I chose the latter. Fast forward to the next morning, laying in bed slowly waking up when my grandson and I hear the loudest of pop/cracks and boom/crash!! I fly out of bed, slam open the front door, and find.... A giant tree fallen ACROSS and easily collapsed the entire carport ON TOP of my 11 month-old, much-loved car. Totaled. Next time I will just park without forethought.

I did this, but broke the tank with my shoulder, so while the bathroom was flooded, the base of the toilet stayed in place. Concussed, but otherwise just wet. About CA$500 to repair, mostly for the drywall.

Or the pallet was overloaded or not properly stretch-wrapped, or they noticed those problems yet didn't want to take the time to get a john lift and unload it manually from the rack.

Um, no. The pallet collapsed. You can see the bottom part of it hanging down from the forks. (And the load probably wasn't correctly shrink wrapped to the pallet.) You can tell by the position of the reach truck (no, it's not a fork lift) that the driver had only just raised the load. It's not even pulled all the way out of the racking. It's not operator error. And size has nothing to do with it. The small things you can get to with a ladder are in the intermediate overheads (lower shelves). The things that are big and heavy and require lift equipment to move are always on the top (16 or 20 ft).

This happened in Denver, CO last year. No one was injured and the plane landed successfully but there were several $100K worth of damage. An engine malfunctioned, damaged the fuselage, and dropped parts across multiple homes and vehicles. The closest call was a couple walking their dog that had ~ 20lb part miss them by 5 feet.

The pieces landed in Broomfield (a north Denver suburb) where I live, and this house is a few blocks from mine. The picture above isn't very helpful to you though. Check out the one I've attached so you can see the 250-pound outer ring of the engine more clearly (also in the original post) that totalled the cab of the truck behind it. And if you're interested, here are two local articles on the event: https://www.broomfieldenterprise.com/2021/02/20/broomfield-police-receive-reports-of-debris-dropped-by-plane-with-engine-trouble/ & https://www.broomfieldenterprise.com/2021/02/24/then-craziness-ensued-broomfield-couple-recounts-plane-debris-falling/ ring-60f49...adc386.jpg ring-60f4923adc386.jpg

Yea. Super valid question. When they say that they mean it's more than one city/firehouse attending the fire. So a 3 alarm fire would mean 3 different cities. In this case it was Murray Fire, Taylorsville Fire and West Valley Fire and fighting it at the same time.

There once was a man driving too quick. And didn't realize the road might be slick. A sign came through the front. And his head took the brunt. So now he'll never make it to Limerick.

Best part is, that's the Irish countryside, where the only things you really CAN hit are the occasional road signs (and low stone walls encompassing sheep fields, I suppose).

    Robert Buxwin

If it is the US or Canada, the condo association is responsible unless the attic is part of their unit. You own everything "from the paint in" so anything in a ceiling or between units is their problem, including damage to anything in your unit resulting from it. And in most placed you are required to have insurance to close unless you paid in cash.

The Porsche driver doesn't have anything to do with this, it's a Ferrari and everywhere in the world you're almost always at fault when your rear ending another vehicle.

This was caused by a failure of the mechanism which keeps the jetway aligned with the aircraft. The auto-leveler moves the jetway up and down because the plane moves as fuel is loaded, passengers disembark, etc.

Babylon, N.Y. (AP) -- A military transport plane with seven men aboard crash-landed on a busy highway Wednesday night, smashing into three cars during a wild skid and fatally injuring a motorist. The twin-engine C123 ran out of gas and swooped down on the four-lane Southern State Parkway on Long Island. Skidding hundreds of feet, it ripped through an underpass and struck three cars before stopping in flames.

Turns out BP was using an unapproved fuel source in the engine so it failed when the ship got too close to shallow water. The contents of the ship were a fuel mixture banned in much of the world from sea transport because of the way it reacts to water. This accident is considered the worse environmental incident in the South Indian Ocean.

The difference is: young drivers have accidents because they are stupid or drunk. You cannot really prevent that with a test. Older drivers have a ton of experience and most often do not drive fast. Their accidents are due to bad sight or bad reaction time. That's preventable by testing elderly people if they are still able to drive. You would not give a 20 year old a drivers licence if they could barely see the road, would you now?

    Marlowe Fitzpatrik
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I was all for that a few years back. Then I realized: if we were to take everyone's license away at a certain age after they failed a reaction-test, we would need a LOT more and better bus-and-train-network. Many people live in villages and can't just walk to a shopping-place or to visit their friends. I'm still not convinced that we should let everyone just keep driving until they die, but maybe offer less dangerous/powerful vehicles to them? 50 km/h max would do fine for most things. Even if they were to mix up the pedals.

Guessing the car is outside of the picture. That's a tractor pulling some expensive farming equipment. Some kind of sprayer tank? (I'm not super familiar with farm equipment)

has anyone else noticed all these supercars have incredible crumble zones? none of the cabins have been affected by these horrid crashes (but when fires is involved that is another story altogether)

Asiana flight 214, horrible accident. It was the first fatal crash of a Boeing 777 since the aircraft type entered service in 1995.

At least there were only 3 fatalities that day.

Isn't this the crash where a firetruck ran over a girl they didn't see because of the foam ?

Mike Bloomberg’s “campaign” was intended to do nothing more than take Bernie Sanders out of the running. It worked like a charm. America now has a status quo president and Bloomberg’s money is safe... Americans are still paying too much for health care and wealth inequality will continue to get worse. Thanks Mike.

Those are crystals. They can definitely survive that.
