50 Times Product Packaging Was So Wrong, People Couldn’t Stay Silent (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertIn this day and age, finally, more and more people are realizing that all that plastic, paper, and everything else that encases the items we buy, ends up in a landfill somewhere. Let’s face it, this amount of plastic waste is not good for the environment or anyone else. Many businesses are coming around to this idea. But a few seem stuck in the past.
The “Egregious Packaging” online community exists to name and shame companies that insist on massive paper and plastic waste. We got in touch with Kathryn Kellogg from Goingzerowaste.com to learn more. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote your favorites, and be sure to comment your thoughts below.

Ordered 5 Nail Polishes From Amazon
Always choose same day shipping and 9/10 arrive in different boxes.
Well you can choose delayed shipping option and then it comes in one box. Did this myself multiple times recently.
I haven't gotten anything from Amazon in a box in a while. Lately, everything has been shipped in those plastic envelopes.
We (Germany) can choose if we want our things as soon as possible or in less packaging…..
Amazon Put Air Pillows In With My Shipment Of Bubble Wrap
It is to prevent them rolls bouncing around in the box. Automatic mail sorting machines punch the boxes frequently in the direction of the correct chute, it is a sort of fast paced rollercoaster. Any object has the potention of bursting the packaging, if is isn't stabilized properly. The suggested wad of brown paper flattens during the process.
Yet they mail my cat food in plastic envelopes and every can gets dented.
Load More Replies...They are worried about the box, not your bubble wrap. The extra padding keeps the box from collapsing when it's on the bottom of a pallet headed from distribution center A to B. A collapsed box causes those on top of it to tip.
Take it positively. Amazon is giving you an extra packaging material as a bonus.
Yeah but the air pillows are way better than plain ole bubble wrap!
Amazon places two boxes marked "fragile" in a larger box with no packing material or relabeling the outer box. One item was a large ceramic water dispenser and the other the 5 gallon bottle that sits on top. As a result of them sliding back and forth in the box the dispenser had broken. The box almost fell out of my hands when I picked it up off of the porch and the box the dispenser was in shifted to the other end.
I had this happen when I ordered bubble wrap, too. It makes slightly more sense when you consider that the air pillows are there not just to prevent damage, but to keep items from shifting in the boxes and changing weight distribution in shipping, but a wad of the brown paper would work just as well.
Wasteful Packaging Should Be A Crime
With over the counter medications, it's not usually theft, it's fear of tampering. The Tylenol poisonings cast a long shadow.
Load More Replies...Unless this is a country where there are rules about how much of a medication you can sell at a time

Buy generic Loratadine on Amazon. Tiny fraction of the cost.
Load More Replies...Who the h*ll wants just one hayfever tablet? I've only ever seen them in boxes of 10 or 30 here in Oz
And how much do they cost? Here in Poland there are 7 Claritine pills packs sold for 12 PLN (3 USD), or generic loratadine 10 pills packs for ~10 PLN (2,50 USD). That is OTC, prescription packs are both larger (up to 90 pills) and cheaper.
Load More Replies...Bored Panda got in touch with Kathryn Kellogg, founder of Goingzerowaste.com and she was kind enough to answer some of our questions. Firstly, we wanted to know what exactly is the harm in waste from packaging.
“The materials used to package our items all have an environmental impact. For example, to make plastic, the raw material crude oil must be extracted from the earth in an unsustainable manner, usually through fracking. Then it must undergo processing in a fossil fuel-powered factory where it is transformed into moldable plastic. Next, it must be shipped to warehouses or stores, which typically requires gas-powered trucks to transport.”
Since Oranges Don't Have A Natural Packaging
One, it will not roll away. Two, you have a place to keep the slices you don't eat. Three, the last time that orange got out it attacked a daycare worker.
If only the orange came in some kind of natural, bio-degradable wrapper 🤔
Pure Absurdity
Whilst the plastic tray is a waste, they are often wrapped to prolong their shelf life. They release a chemical called ethylene which can also cause other fruit to ripen quicker so this is often done to prevent this.
Came here to offer that explanation, too. Not that I think it is smart to do so in the supermarket.,
Load More Replies...The only reason I could think of is to ensure every customer gets exactly the same number per buch, what with some people breaking bunches apart. But since people buy whatever number they want and they are generally sold by weight measured at the cashier, that seems stupid to do.
If only that came in a natural wrapper. At least we have banana for scale
I Was Worried When I Noticed I Had A Damaged Package Outside. Turns Out It Wasn't An Issue
Was it really necessary to buy two batteries online? If we're talking environmental woes, the shipping involved for one pack of batteries?
But why the F**K would you have e couple of AA-batteries delivered?!
Might have been part of a larger order that was split.
Load More Replies...If this is Amazon it is supposedly an algorithm problem. The Box Size is calculated to fill the space in the van to stack and stop things falling around so sometimes small items go in large boxes.
I also suspect that with the way Amazon slave drives its employees some workers may grab the closest available box to keep on time and meet their quota.
Load More Replies...That looks like an Amazon worker getting a bit of revenge on the slave driver company.
WHO pack this stuff!!!? On the whole list. It’s either a huge amount of unnecessary plastic or huge boxes for tiny things…. Why ffs???
Amazon always find the biggest box/ package to put the smallest of things in
“All these factors have a high carbon footprint. Not to mention the end of life of our packaging, especially plastic, is another thing to consider. Only 5-6% of plastic is recycled while the rest ends up in our environment or in landfills. So when we can reduce packaging waste, I think it's important to do so,” she shared.
For F**k's Sake
You don't find those in France. The usual packaging here is a 250g ( about 9 ounces) net bag. But mostly I buy them loose, by the weight. I guess this monstrosity is imported from France in bulk, THEN packaged.
Load More Replies...These "Biosmart" Straws That Come In A Plastic Bag, With Smaller Plastic Bags Inside For Each Individual Color
Honestly, paper straws are absolute nonsense anyway. I'm 100% sure that the only reason why there were outcries about plastic straws it that DuPOnt lost their patent for plastic straws. Then there were those awful paper straws (we all remember then, absolutely useless things that fell apart in any drink) and now we have paper straws with with PFAS to make them waterproof. PFAS is made by DuPont and it may be little bit toxic. Oh, and PFAS is not biodegradable.
PFAS is not degradable at all. It is a "forever chemical", contaminating the Schelde and ruining the fishing industry in parts of Zeeland (Netherlands), because 3M in Antwerp had a secret pipe loosing the stuff in the river.
Load More Replies...And this is why I argued against the plastic straw ban. It's the prime example why regulations aimed at the consumer doesn't work. The consumer is only responsible for less than 10% waste. The industry uses most plastic for wrapping, fillers etc. Until we get regulations for the industry and their indirect use of plastic, forbidding plastic in the end products only results in plastic being used for more packaging or fillers. I'm not saying you shouldn't use less plastic. But I am saying don't think that'll save the planet unless we finally regulate the industry.
Exactly. It is always put on the measly little consumer, when the actual industries are waaaay worse. They tell us little folks to do what we can (straws!) but their manufacturing is the real reason for health and environmental problems. The big behemoths shift the blame to the little folks to "do what you can do for the environmental issues" but we are less than a mere drop in the bucket. (on another note, the rich as hell CEOs tell us to cut back on your expensive coffee drinks, but those folks again blame the little guy while seeing the disconnect in the "wage gap")
Load More Replies...I just use the big noodles with the hole in it. Works perfectly, and it takes a while until they get wobbly. And then... why even use straws? Mostly its not even necessary...
And when it is necessary - for a lot of disabled and elderly people - none of the other solutions are suitable due to their lack of flexibility. My friend gets issues where her jaw suddenly clamps and locks, if she is using one of these replacement straws (which she needs due to mobility issues) ad this happens, she'll break her teeth. As it is, she bought loads of the flexible straws while she could and she reuses them until they break, like she already did before.

I wish I could have posted this earlier- tried to find a similar one but lemons it is. Why are y'all buying orange juice in plastic bottles? It tastes nasty and is so bad for the environment. Please start buying the frozen concentrate. It comes in a small much less hazardous package and tastes SO much better. It's harder to find in the grocery stores now - I need a whole lot of you to go buy some and try it so they won't phase it out. Reconstituted OJ is my coffee!
Awww come on that just takes away the joy of getting lemon juice squirted in your eye while trying to cut one!
Way too much packaging, but pre-cut fruits and veggies are pretty beneficial to people with severe arthritis in their hands
Load More Replies...Given the downsides, we were curious to hear her opinion on why companies still insisted on acting this way. “Some of it has to do with cost: It’s cheaper to buy virgin plastic than recycled, for example. But another factor for brands is keeping up with trends and marketing. Brands want to be unique and catch your eye, and one way they can do that is through packaging.”
Two Sleeves Of Pills Came In The Box Of 10
It actually can be more environmentally friendly to use an often used packaging and underpack for smaller charges. Imagine you use 1 mio of these per week with 12 blisters and have a whole assembly line built around that and have to package 1 k per week of 2 different things with 2 and 5 pills. Better than using the space of 2 other assembly lines you underpack. Not effective but efficient.

That is the smallest pallet I've ever seen! I'm just picturing the tiny little forklift that picked that thing off the shelf.
The open box with flaps is not the same box as in the first picture which shows a lid that lifts off. Seems someone is trying to set us up?
It's the same box. Those are corner protectors, not a lid, that prevent the straps from crushing the sides of the box.

Depends on the warehouse. It might have been cheaper to ship it than dispose of it.

“Sometimes, this leads to excessive, over-the-top choices. Also, if they are selling their products through a third party, like Amazon, sometimes they don’t have control over how their products are shipped and packaged,” she shared with Bored Panda. One reason to keep shaming companies is the simple fact that they tend to just not keep their own word. Despite pledges to reduce plastic waste, every single big company that has made these promises has also failed to actually implement them. The Coca-Cola Company, Nestle SA, and PepsiCo are some of the largest plastic polluters in the world.
Literally W H Y
I've seen this in previous BP posts and people have said it is because they are microwavable, and the plastic helps with the steaming or something, but you don't need the plastic wrap to microwave a potato, sweet or otherwise. They microwave just fine on their own without any kind of covering.
Naw, it's because the branding requires labeling which "requires" plastic packaging.

More Single Use Plastic Please
This is for the restaurant industry, to give free to customers after a meal.
This one I could understand a little, since pandemic panic would have people not wanting to touch a bowl of toothpicks where everyone else has touched the same area.
To advertise wooden toothpicks as a novelty ecomaterial is strange ... they have always been made from wood. Individually packed makes sense if offered outsude of a private home
Many of these same companies actually obstruct attempts by governmental and NGO efforts to limit plastic waste. So the excessive plastic seen here is just one symptom of a larger issue, where large companies are willing to flood the planet with disposable plastic just to get a slightly better bottom line. Naming and shaming is the least any of us can do.

So we wanted to know what else people could do at home. “A simple swap everyone can do to cut down on plastic waste is just ordering less takeout. Takeout containers often come in plastic, and with smaller plastic packets (think ketchup pouches, soy sauce holders, etc.) and can be hard to recycle. Always check with your local guidelines first of course before wishcycling these items. Going to a restaurant or eating at home more is a simple way to reduce plastic waste and use up what’s in your fridge. Try incorporating one or two more home-cooked meals into your week than you already do: It’s okay to prep it ahead of time too, if that’s easier.”

I keep thinking the same thing too. Although they do go overboard with the size of the box, etc. Could be much smaller.

“You can reach out to companies and brands about their packaging. Write them an email expressing what you love about their product, then go into their packaging and explain why it’s a problem. Maybe they’re using excessive packaging, or it’s hard to recycle plastic packaging. Whatever it is, be honest. You may inspire them to change their packaging for the better!”

Load More Replies...So I looked it up. Have an article on why pomelos are wrapped in plastic - https://shuncy.com/article/why-are-pomelos-wrapped-in-plastic
The purpose of wrapping pomelos in plastic is to protect the fruit from pests and diseases, to extend shelf life, and to promote uniform ripening. Wrapping pomelos in plastic helps to reduce losses in fruit production and can also help to improve their quality. Pest and Disease Control Wrapping pomelos in plastic can help to control pests and diseases. Many insects, such as whiteflies, mealybugs, and scale, feed on the fruit and spread diseases, such as powdery mildew and citrus greening. By wrapping the fruit in plastic, it can prevent these insects from getting to the fruit and spreading diseases. Extending Shelf Life Wrapping pomelos in plastic can help to extend their shelf life. The plastic helps to reduce water loss from the fruit, keeping it fresher for longer. The plastic also helps to keep out bacteria and fungi, which can cause the fruit to spoil. Promoting Uniform Ripening Wrapping pomelos in plastic can help to promote uniform ripening.

While paper waste is downright annoying, plastic waste is considerably worse. After all, paper can and will break down over time, as anyone who has left a cardboard box in the rain can attest to. Plastic, on the other hand, generally refuses to cooperate and will be around for a long, long time.
Interestingly, even though it does appear that the combination of shopping and excessive packaging would be the main culprit in terms of plastic waste, this is not actually the case. Packaging only accounts for 5% of municipal solid waste in the United States. While the examples here are extreme, it’s worth noting that many companies have adopted more eco-friendly packaging.

Why don't people keep their criticism to themselves when they know nothing about the situation? This order might have happened during pandemic lockdown, it might be from someone not capable of shopping in physical stores, it might have been far and away the best price around but the local Sam's Club didn't have it in stock, itmight be someone who is still a Sam's member but moved to a location far from a store, etc. You don't know the situation, so don't judge them from your perch.

I wish I could tell my pet sit clients who own cats to buy these. The cheap flimsy plastic ones are so horrible. A couple of them do have metal litter scoops but most of them don't. If your cat lives 15 plus years, wouldn't you want a litter scoop that will last that whole time instead of having to buy another plastic one that will break and wear down much faster than a metal one? It seems illogical but so common in my 12.5 years as a pet sitter.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, a lot of plastic waste is generated by the sorts of things that we don’t see. It’s a lot easier to shame a business for wrapping bananas in plastic bags than it is to call out agricultural companies for the sorts of irrigation pipes they use. Of course, this doesn't mean that companies should be let off the hook just because someone else is polluting more.

A better question is if you're going to pack it "safely" why is it jammed in a corner with packing on two sides? If the packing is for protection it's not working. Anyway, I'd guess this is as case of the shop doesn't have smaller boxes available. That's not an excuse for a company like amazon, but it's not surprising if it's bought from a smaller electronics shop. I worked as a storeman for a year or so. We would get our stock in bigger boxes (like 50 items in them). Then of course people would order just a couple items. So we had a room with dozens of the original big boxes and we'd try to re-use the ones that are the closest size. Sometimes a box like the example above was the closest option.
That packaging is more about the contents not shifting during transit than it is for directly protecting it. My understanding is that without this packaging it would be way more common for items to receive damage from internal impacts (a.k.a it shifting around) that it would from external impacts. I don't blame Amazon or similar that much for reducing the number of package sizes they do have since it can incur an opportunity cost in their storage, though it should be adjusted at fairly regular intervals to accommodate the more common order sizes. One thing I will blame them on though is using several packages where one (same size or larger) would have been enough. This is most likely an artifact of their one-click buy system where every buy-click through it generates a separate order thus them being packaged separately.

Some might argue that, due to recycling, plastic waste isn’t, ultimately, that bad. In a perfect world, they would be right. However, in reality, roughly 9% of all the plastic we produce is recycled, the rest is incinerated or just waiting around to biodegrade, a process that will take way too long to even consider.
The good news is that biodegradable plastics do exist. However, they aren’t the silver bullet many of us would prefer. For one, they may produce methane gas when decomposing, which is sort of counterproductive on the face of things. Still, they at least can be gotten rid of, while traditional plastic might outlive the pyramids.

Probably to prevent degredation by light. Any sparkling wine not in an opaque bottle is wrapped in cellophane to absorb uv, likely the same here.
It's to keep the un-wrapped corks in place and, failing that, to contain the mess.
Load More Replies...I think you're right that's the idea, but it's not attractive at all; it looks like a grocery store produce bag with a twist tie. A nice ribbon would be better, or shiny paper like the one next to it.
Load More Replies...Why Individually Package Them In Plastic 2 Packs When They're Already Wrapped??
But as they said they are already wrapped in wax paper so won't stick together and are cover for share bowls so why put them in plastic wrapper as well.
Load More Replies...They are wrapped in paper. You can see if you zoom in. In UK they only have the paper wrapper but this place put individual plastic wrappers over the paper wrappers.
Load More Replies...This is just how starbursts are made? They create the treat, wrap them in their paper and then put them in their packaging. This is "mini" packaging, used for Halloween type things and they're wrapped in paper to prevent them melting and merging together. You're the one that apparently picked out the mini two-packs?
This is how I always find Starburst packaged. I t could be because they are soft and if they were not individually wrapped they would stick together.
Everyone is saying that it is practical for Halloween and such, but they aren’t realizing that the candies are already wrapped in paper.
That paper doesn't do much to protect the candy; any heat or prolonged pressure (like in a backpack) and it will smush right out through the folds. All it really does is prevent the individual candies from sticking to each other; it's the outer plastic packaging that protects it.

These are standardised bakery display boxes available in bulk. What they should be doing is putting more cookies in them
And it's probably made from recycled plastic and then goes to live forever in a garbage landfill; recycled plastic like this can not be re-recycled 😳🤔🙃😶😕
For this sort of box, they are most likely polypropylene, and most likely not recycled plastic. Likely fully recyclable.
Load More Replies...Somehow Both Too Much And Not Enough
No. Seeing the size of the bowl and the box, this is in no way "too much" packaging. This box is too small, full stop. It needs to have enough space around it to cushion the sides, and the whole box needs to be filled to prevent movement and jostling of contents. This box is not big enough and the wrapping wholly inadequate.
Needs one of those gigantic boxes and bubble wrap like the other pictures.

Please go see a doctor as soon as you can. Your fingers look slightly clubbed and bluish. This could be a symptom of low oxygen in your blood due to heart/lung issues. Also could be celiac. Seriously.

You want a lot of packing for a CPU since it's fragile. But that box is awful. If it's jammed against that corner there is no protection from impact.
Ordered Two Lightbulbs. One Came In This Box. The Other Came In A Normal Sized Box
Reminds me of something funny I heard once. Think about how batteries are packaged—thick plastic with cardboard around and you can hardly cut through the plastic it’s so heavy duty. To protect those batteries. Compared to so-fragile lightbulbs, which are packaged in barely-there corrugated thin cardboard, and not even closed- open at the top and bottom! It’s so true! Had to laugh and now wonder how light bulbs make it anywhere unbroken.

This is an anti theft measure. Much harder to stuff that in your bag or pocket than an appropriate sized package.
It's also for advertising. Imagine trying to find a tiny memory chip on a shelf if it didn't have a decent amount of packaging.

Way Too Much Packaging For Some Batteries 🤦♂️
There's a reason for this. These are lithium batteries that require a hazmat sticker(s). The lables at amazon are decent size and by law these lables cannot be folded over edges, the box has to be thick enough to accommodate this.
The Tomato Aisle In My Local Grocery Store Made Me Sad
I reuse these kind of containers for picking berries or storing my own grown produce.
My Dad does the same, along side toilet paper rolls and egg cartons, if I didn't know they all got used for garden purposes, I'd be worried.

I usually buy loose tomatos and they are, suprisingly, neither pureed nor ketchuped. Should I submit a complaint to the shop? :P

No, he's complaining that this is way too big of a box to get a battery for, and that they don't even have any protective material as an excuse.

oh yeah that actually makes sense. also, better than all the bags being plastic too!

Individually Plastic Wrapped Chocolates In A Plastic Bag
To be fair, they would stick together if just tossed in a bag. And it is meant like you eat just one at a time...
The real lesson is here is to stop shopping online! Who are these people who either a) can't go to the grocery store or pharmacy to pick up a single battery or bottle of nail polish, or b) can't wait a few weeks with it sitting in thier virtual cart to ship with other stuff? Everyone wants everything now now now in the perfect color immediately and they can't wait four days or go to the store. Just stop buying stuff online. These are the same people who then complain about stores closing or downtown areas being ghost towns. Whose fault is that?
Batteries can easily be bought in a store but buying them in person won’t save malls from closing down. Nail polish doesn’t have the variety of brands and colors in a grocery store that you get online and it’s not realistic to wait for a nail polish emporium to open up in town to buy your favorite shade.
Load More Replies...Alot of this is package size availability. You think they have a box tailored for every size item being sold?
Indeed. I mentioned on one of the posts that we used to re-use boxes we received the wholesale stuff in when we mailed it out to customers. We'd always use whatever the closest size box was. You'd think Amazon would have more sizes, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did a cost analysis and realised it was cheaper to have half a dozen different size boxes than two dozen different sizes.
Load More Replies...I can also take some big box, put something small in it while not showing the original content, snap a photo and have an internet story.
I know that there are some really problematic packaging/product discrepancies, but I think there are also a lot of people who do what you suggest for the ragebait.
Load More Replies...The most of the online ordered stuff begs the question: Why? These were common goods one could and can find easily at local shops and be picked up by everybody doing the shopping rub
Beg the question is supposed to be a type of circular reasoning where the premise of the question preassumes the answer. People have used “beg the question” wrong so much that Oxford updated their definition to include “raise the question.”
Load More Replies...I can beat every one if these. About ten years ago, I used to support servers and storage. HP shipped license keys on a printed piece of paper. HP also has a minimum box size they used from the storage side of the house. I received a 12"x 30"x 30" box stuffed full of packaging, and inside of that was a bubble wrap envelope, and inside of that was a plastic envelope, inside of that was a paper envelope. Inside of that was a single piece of paper. The best part, we ordered 8 licenses, we received 8 of these boxes, ON A PALLET, SHIPPED AS FREIGHT. The most facepalm part, the inner plastic envelopes were shipping envelopes for UPS. All they had to do what slap a label on them
I learned the best way to ship fragile/delicate items from working in an auto repair shop of all places. We would repair MFDs for Prius vehicles (the fancy touch pad that controls the air/radio/gps/etc). When we mailed them back, we wrapped in two layers of basic bubble wrap and put into a box that just BARELY fit around the entire unit. Make sure the MFD does NOT move around inside the box when shaken. Then we put that box in a slightly larger box, filling all sides with bubble wrap until nothing moved inside the larger box when shaken. Although it used 2 boxes, the bubble wrap was minimal and we had success in all but some very extreme cases on shipper negligence.
Lol, my country is very much the opposite, they will fit giant stuff in a small box.
