30 Times Brazen Companies Shrunk Their Products For The Same Or Higher Price And People Exposed Them Online (New Pics)
No, it’s not your mind playing tricks on you or another unexpected growth spurt, dear Pandas—those products you’re buying at your local supermarket or fast food restaurant are genuinely getting smaller. Welcome to the weird world of shrinkflation, where ethics goes out the window, your purchasing power takes a nose-dive, and everyone’s grumpy about corporate decisions once they figure out what's happening behind the scenes.
The r/shrinkflation subreddit collects some of the most egregious examples of product sizes shrinking but the prices staying the same (or, in some cases, rising). Scroll down to check out the very worst offenders that people spotted out in ‘the wild.’
Bored Panda reached out to Matt Johnson, Ph.D., a consumer psychology specialist, host of the human nature blog, and the author of ‘Branding that Means Business,’ to learn about shrinkflation. You'll find our full interview with him, including why it's so important for businesses to be transparent with their customers, as you scroll down below.

Pret A Manger Taking Out The Main Bit
Not just wrong. It's a deliberate effort to mislead the buyer. Legal scamming, this should be against the law.
Load More Replies...I've noticed the same thing at Canadian and US airports with both pre-made sandwiches and wraps. Never again.
I always give them a light squeeze to see what's actually there. Peek under the label too.
Load More Replies...They became famous in the early 2000s for being a healthier choice for lunch break, snagging the niche of people (mostly employees and travelers) who did not want unhealthy fast food, expensive traditional restaurants or low quality company canteens. Part of their selling point was use of seasonal vegetables and recyclable wrappers, while behind the scenes there was debatable working conditions and rampant anti-unionism. Food quality tanked fast after ownership was moved to a German investor fund.
Load More Replies...They have not taken out the main bit! What on earth would they do with the 'middle bits'?They have always packed wraps in this deceptive manner. I bet the weight has been reduced, but not the price though.
Consumer psychology specialist Johnson explained to us why businesses might choose to reduce package size instead of raising the sticker price.
"The temptation for companies to engage in shrinkflation is clear. While customers will generally notice a price increase, and are sensitive to that change, they’re much less likely to notice a reduction in the volume they’re actually consuming," he told Bored Panda via email.
"Consumers will feel as if they’re still receiving the same value, when in reality, they’re paying the same amount for less product."
The Shrink Flation Of Quality Street Over The Years Is Truly Embarrassing
The fact that you keep their package since the 80s should put you in the brand's vip list
Quality Street tins are much like Royal Dansk sewing kits, only they usuaully contain either cakes of biscuits. The new plastic "tins" are rubbish.
Load More Replies...The original one you could use for a whole decorated cake. The modern plastic ones are so skinny that they're only good for brownies. I think they're in cahoots with the plastic ware companies that make cake storage
I have a few of them in the garage for screws ect.
Load More Replies...How disappointing.i like those. Pandas, which is favourite quality street?
Used to be purple but I had one last Christmas and it was horrible. All of them seem sickly sweet, and not in a good way. Don’t know if my tastes have just changed due to age or the quality has plummeted.
Load More Replies...I normally buy the big 1,5 kg tins in Germany. They fit a lot of sewing kit lol
Apparently 15oz Is "Bigger Size, Better Value" Than 18oz
They should rename the company Slime.
Load More Replies...However, Johnson noted that shrinkflation is, in many ways, a high-risk tactic. "If they pull it off and consumers don’t notice it, they’re able to increase their margins while maintaining the same sales, and thus, increasing their profitability," he said.
"But if consumers catch on to it, it can reflect very poorly on the brand, and risks damaging long-term sales. Consumers aren’t fans of higher prices, but at least the transaction is made transparent—they know what they’re paying, and what they’re getting," the consumer psychology specialist said.
"Shrinkflation is more subverted. It intentionally misleads consumers into thinking they’re getting more than they are actually are. Should consumers catch on to this, this dishonesty will be reflected in a much more negative perception of the brand."

By the look of the face of 'Mr Pringle' on the new can even he can't believe the audacity
The new Mr. PRINGLE is wearing headphones. Not just a reduction in the amt of product, but some slick advertising to appeal to the masses
Load More Replies...Size of the can is irrelevant if we don't see the weight. A few posts below we can see the top is empty so this really makes me wonder.
I thought so, but checked and they actually reduced the weight from 200g (long tube) to 165g (short tube). Price is mislabeled.
Load More Replies...Yup! Can no longer reach in with an adult hand either!
Load More Replies...What's the weigh on the two cans? Just because one is shorter does mean it contains less. Chips (and chip like snacks) are sold by the weight, not the size of the packaging.
This was done due to a change in government legislation on pack sizes / portion sizes of pruducts high in salt or sugar. It was forced onto the companies.
Yes, but they kept the same price on the new smaller cans

Went to the airport recently and a sandwich like this they were really selling them for $16!! Just a sandwich. Nothing else! Not even from a deli! From one of those "newsstand" type stores. And a 20 oz soda was $4. That's the REAL reason u can't bring food and drink into the airport anymore. It's so they can charge u whatever they want
This should be top News and exposure to consumers! Boycott this ripoff!!
Load More Replies...thats not shrinkflation thats just a scam. and i would want my money back.
According to the specialist, transparency is almost always the best practice. "To help consumers come to terms with this, they could attempt to be upfront about this downsizing and even to frame 'less' as positive," Johnson pointed out that creativity can help turn these tough situations into opportunities.
"For example, framing a smaller volume product as 'minimalist,' or in the case of perishable goods like milk, to emphasize how it’s less likely to spoil. There are many ways to attempt a more positive framing, but transparency to the consumer is paramount," Johnson told Bored Panda.
It might have been your fave packet of crisps getting slightly smaller (hi!) or a fancy brand of chocolates that seem to have fewer tasty treats that first tipped you off about the existence of shrinkflation.
Or maybe it was the sudden realization that it’s just 10 delicious double-glazed donuts you’re buying, not the usual dozen… or the fact that your top burger place (you know, the one you recommend to everyone) seems to have added a Shrink Ray(™) in the kitchen. Shrinkflation can be subtle. And it's infuriating if it's kept secret.
On The Right The Normal Toblerone And On The Left The New Shrinkflated Toblerone
That's old. They came back to the initial design. Public reaction was kinda sharp. But yeah, they'll be moving production in Slovakia so it won't be called "of Switzerland" anymore. Also no Matterhorn image anymore. Also worse chocolate, in all likelihood. So if you want a memory of what Toblerone was, eat one now.
The announced this was happening and explained why, though. They didn't try to hide it and get caught. They said they can't produce the chocolate at the same price point and maintain the quality, so instead of lowering the quality, they are reduce the amount of chocolate you get.
It wont even taste the same...see how the nougat is spread all through the peak? The best part is the honey nougat followed up with the peak. I am so upset to see this! I hear it is no longer being made in Switzerland now. SAD!
My Allergy Pills I Still Have To Pay The Same Price
I've noticed this kind of packaging with gum for a few years now too. First it was one spot. Then another. And then another.
This makes me furious. We have enough packaging waste in this world.
Load More Replies...Same with my cold meds. At this point, not only are they being wasteful, I feel like they're being jerks, and just rubbing in our faces.
It IS a waste of packaging, but also enables the same packaging to be used for multiple products that may or may not have different quantities per pack, therefore keeping overall costs down and as a result prices in stores stay a bit lower. 99% of the time, its either cut costs OR be environmentally friendly. A s****y choice to have to make, but thats the way it is. The mega rich, and the worlds governments, could do something about it, but they choose not to so they can maximise their or own profits.
And the cost to the companies to replace the automated machinery for product changes is quite steep. I worked at a famous mayonnaise --think southern-bred recipe it has twang--packing plant in maintenance, and the cost of the machinery was through the roof!
Load More Replies...I don't understand why companies think this will b ok with their customers
Is there a different brand you could buy? The best revenge is to stop giving them your money.
The worst is when you have to buy allergy meds at the little convenience stands inside of hotels: slightly inflated price but otherwise same brand, same size, same packaging, but with literally only one pill.
Have any of you determined at what point you will stop buying those products ?
They are going to keep pushing the limits until their consumers say "enough is enough."
Load More Replies...I bought some, and looked over the pkg to see if foil backing was broken. Made me question if I had taken some and had forgotten.
Chocolate Digestives Disappeared Off The Shelves For 2 Months, Then Came Back 27% Smaller
McVities have, in Australia at least. Product made in the UK but packaged in Oz. Used to be 400g but the packaging is now 355g. The Woolies website even has listings for both sizes but of course the 400g one is now "out of stock"
Load More Replies...The one advantage of the smaller digestive is that it fits into my tea cup (yes, I dip my digestives -- and ginger snaps---) into my milky English tea.
Cookies sorta, if you've had an "Animal Cracker" or "Maria" cookie, they're the closest in taste.
Load More Replies...The r/shrinkflation online community is home to nearly 64.2k internet users who discuss the murky practice of corporations reducing the size of their products while still charging customers the previous price.
The photos they share are real-life evidence that this effect is actually happening in stores and isn’t just some theory. And most of you Pandas reading this probably have anecdotal evidence of shrinkflation in action from your own trips to the grocery store.
Investopedia attributes the coining of the term shrinkflation (also known as ‘package downsizing’ in business) to British economist Pippa Malmgren. Shrinkflation is a response to rising production costs or increased market competition, and this subtle tactic is most often used by companies that sell food and beverages. However, there is the risk that consumers will be put off by the brand if they notice this happening.
Nothing Is Sacred
They're making a killing by taking out that piece and charging the same.
Load More Replies...Id pay for the increased price, not all the time, but for goodness sakes, DONT LIE ABOUT IT!!! Or cheat us!!
My cold med capsules look similar. A couple years ago, there was a full sheet of 12 doses. Now it's 10, with 2 empty spots. I feel they keep the empty spots to rub it in my face. Jerks
My bad, saw a post for meds further down, should have put this there. Sorry folks.
Load More Replies...I've seen this in B.C. Canada on double packs of gum with "18 pieces" in total, meaning each of the 2 gum inserts will have 1 piece missing. 2 x 9 = 18. I guess they can't afford to give the extra 2 pieces unless they raise the price. Oh, wait! They did that as well the sneaky buggers!
Bubble gum flavor with a hint of mint. It's weird, but not horrible.
Load More Replies...Just Opened This Pack Of Pringles It's Just Disappointing
Yeah but at least it shows the weight, not amount, so it's not like it changes anything
Sure, but you can't expect me to remember how much a can of Pringles used to weigh. And the packaging is trying to mislead you to think there's more inside than there actually is. I feel like the companies are making an idiot out of me and I don't like it.
Load More Replies...They used to be bigger. They get smaller smalller and....cost more. No thanks.
They think all of us consumers are idiots and can't figure these things out. But, since we do pay and consume anyway, they continue to do these things
I'm calling BS on this one. I put a full sized pringles in my lunch for work every other day. It's never this low when I open it. Also the first few are always broken. This person has eaten half the can before taking this photo.
Why Shrinkflate The Package If You Can Just Put Less Product In The Same Box
They'll blame it on the shortage of materials... like they're doing with everything else!😠
Not only are there fewer sheets, they're smaller too. 😡 This is why middle aged and older folks are grumpy.
No they're not. They literally both say 20.8 x 21.3cm. What would be interesting would be whether the weight is different. It's possible they're using thicker tissues. Something I'd prefer since some brands make tissues that are too thin.
Load More Replies...According to Investopedia, shrinkflation is a form of hidden inflation, and companies rely on the fact that many of their customers won’t spot a decrease in package size, even if they might spot rising sticker prices. All of those reductions in size and quantity quickly add up, resulting in more savings and profit for the business.
The fact of the matter is that most shoppers don’t check the size of a product and, instead, focus mostly on its price. It’s only after a few rounds of shrinkflation (and possibly some of your friends grumbling about how there’s even more air than crisps in the pack) that we might finally grasp what’s going on.

Load More Replies...They print on the outside of the package that even though there are fewer rolls in the pack, they are double in volume, so instead of 4 rolls, . they say it's 8. I don't know how they get away with that legally.
I'm also tired of toilet paper and paper towel math. "4 = 12!" And "12 = 48!" So annoying.
Load More Replies...Yes! TP size changed about 3 years ago. It's a full inch (2.5'ish cm) less wide.
Also, their toilet paper and paper towels have gotten really, really thin. Have to change brands.

They should have just changed the name of it to Crunch....lost the "ie" in smaller size
Based on the findings of the UK’s Office for National Statistics, a jaw-dropping 2,529 products decreased in size between 2012 and June 2017. During that same period of time, merely 614 products became bigger. This shows just how common package downsizing is among food and beverage businesses.
Shiny Stickers Can’t Fool Me
How? How the hell is it "audacity"? It says new size, it IS a new size. Also, it look to me as though the sticker has been peeled off the bigger one and put onto the smaller one by the person taking the pic.
Load More Replies...New size! Because we're not buying enough yachts, and our employees refuse to work for no wages!
Our 500g Coffee Mate has lost 50gs. And the 1 kg tub has lost 200g. They changed the shape of the tub to tall and thin, instead of medium and squat (UK). But when you look around, no product is safe from the Less for more. The only way this will stop is for people to - at least - boycott products we can do without because this isn't going to stop. They try to say less is healthier - then show their colours by constantly ramping up the price as well.
I’m more interested in the Australian roasting ! Is that a thing ? And should we be worried about poisonous parts ?
A quick Google search suggests that it is a thing. Apparently Australian roasted coffee tends to be lighter and more caramel than typical U.S. coffee.

New Cottee’s Jam!
My local supermarket has always had two sizes of these. Not sure the issue here
Not anymore in Aus, use to only be able to buy the large jars, now they're only small with the same price as the large. It's the same with all the canned/jarred/packaged stuff over here.
Load More Replies...I would make my own. Get the fruit a lot of it, pectin etc. and the recipe. Its not hard. My mom made refrigerator strawberry jam when they would come i to season. Store it in our old fridge in the garage. We then had it all year long !
Added A Roll From A New Package Of Toilet Roll
Ok, this one may be tighter rolled up. They do that in gernany. You can see the "price per sheet" on the shelf
Could also be that the "bigger" rolls started that size but have absorbed moisture from the air and expanded over time. Or that they're a different "model" eg: 2ply vs 3ply.
Load More Replies...That's a great example of TP math-1 roll = 75 rolls (lol). You just have to find the right package. 😂😂
It can’t be understated just how tiny some of these changes are. The Guardian reported back in 2021 that Walkers cut two packets of crisps from its 24-bag multipacks while keeping the price stable at £3.50. Meanwhile, KP peanut bags, which cost £2.50 at the time, were reduced in size from 250g to 225g. These are all changes that your regular shopper, who’s rushing about, might not spot in their day-to-day visits to the supermarket.
New 'Xl Pack' Fabric Conditioner
Reminds me of a psychological test, where they show two containers, one short and wide, and the other tall and narrow, which contain the same amount of liquid. They then ask the test subjects which container has more liquid in it. A lot of people are fooled by the taller container, thinking it has more. They need to take consultant psychologists out of advertising and changes in product packaging. I for one am really sick and tired of being psychologically manipulated like this by corporations. Aren't you?
I remember seeing that in a psychology text book. They had a child stand in front of two identical beakers containing the same amount of liquid then pour one into a tall cylinder and have them point to which one has more, and of course they point to the large cylinder. But I never saw them try the reverse (i.e. pouring tall cylinder into short beaker) and see what the child subject says

My Dad Sent Me This, He’s Very Passionate About Shrinkflation
Probably the most obvious way to protest against shrinkflation is to stop buying brands that reduce their product size. You can, instead, buy their competitors’ products (which, hopefully, haven’t been getting smaller either!) or decide to boycott the product entirely. However, it’s far easier for most people to switch to a cheaper brand of crisps or chocolates, or peanuts than it is to give up these guilty pleasures altogether.

What $15usd Buys You At Dominos In Australia Now. This Is A "Large"
They put so much pepperoni on! That's 10 times more pepperoni than domino's gives us here in the states
Use to have a Dominos pizza every Friday when I was a kid and they were big, stopped for a few years, had one on a trip and couldn't believe how small it was, barely any toppings and thin crust. Not worth it, make your own pizza, dough is easy to make and you can freeze it.
Can confirm. The last few thin and crispy ones we bought were fairly burned too.
Should also point out that's not a standard pepperoni from Dominos Australia, it's at least double, maybe even triple or quadruple pepperoni. You're lucky if you get a dozen maybe 15 slices. There's a reason I try to buy from the one remaining non-chain pizza shop. This amount of toppings is standard for them and this size pizza is called "regular" and it's about $10US. They also have large and family sized that are even better value for money.
Not The Oreo Filling! Damn Shrinkflation!!!
It's already been like this for almost 10 years. :( The double-stuffed ones look close to the original amount of creme inside.
Want to make a product called 'double-stuffed', just reduce the original by 50%, et voila!
Load More Replies...It was a while back, when "reducing fat" was all the rage. Friend of mine bought some Oreo's and the package said "1/3 less fat". Had an older package and went to compare, didn't see any difference in the ingredients but, calories, etc. was less....then he looked at the serving size, it went from 3 cookies to 2.
I think they're talking about the size of the dollop, not the thickness (e.g. it probably used to go further to the edge of the cookie).
I actually scrape the filling out and just eat the cookie. Maybe I need to find someone to give my uneaten filling.
I'm the same as you. Never cared much for the creme. Glad to know I'm not alone
Load More Replies...The cookie part sucks too. Used to do the twisting easily & now damn near everyone of them break.
So accurate! Except at one point I got a pack of regular oreos that were double stuffed and I paid regular price so a win win
Though if you feel like most or even all businesses are, at this moment in time, being exceptionally sneaky, it might be best to cut back. At least for a while, until they come to their senses. Vote with your wallet!
With people paying the same (or more) for less, money can feel tight for many families. We’ve covered on Bored Panda before how everyone can cut back and budget better when it comes to their groceries. You could, for instance, cut back on red meat to help balance your spending, and choose to go for other sources of protein.
That Packaging
We did cut back and also have had a container garden for two years now.
Oreo Changed Their Row Direction And Decreased Net Weight. Price Had Been Steadily Increasing As Well
I was grocery shopping yesterday. Oreos are close to $5. All the cookies snacks are so exoensive, even Littke Debbie, which us the lowest of the low. At least they are making it easier to not indulge in junk. Why spend $5 on potatoe chips when i can get a package of blueberry and a package of strawberries for same price?
Their already jacking up all the fruit and veg prices "due to devastating droughts". That's doubling the already doubled prices from 2022's gasoline hikes.

Next, choose to buy items in bulk and at a large discount. Of course, your fridge might not be able to fit all the groceries, but if you cooperate with your family, friends, and neighbors, you can all stand to save some dough. Meanwhile, keep in mind that so long as you freeze food the right way so it doesn’t spoil, you won’t be sacrificing its nutritional value. And remember, just because a fruit or a vegetable might not look ‘presentable’ doesn’t make it less delicious if you plop it in a stew or throw it into your wok.
Does This Count?
WTF it's literally just a shot of sugar syrup into carbonated water. It only costs the company maybe half a cent for each cup of soda. The cup itself is usually 100x more expensive then the actual soda is.
That's the producing companies cost, not the sellers cost.
Load More Replies...this is kind of ironic. the reason "FREE REFILLS" became a thing is because there is a lot of up charge on soda compared to what it actually costs. It gives the illusion of something free to get you in the door but costs them very little. And actually costs them even less since many places are charging you $2.50 or more for the soda so in a sense you already paid for the refills with your first glass.
They charge almost 4 dollars for a soda at most places, I better be getting free refills lol
I don't know how much it costs in places outside of the U.S., but prices for soda in the stores are now sky-high.
Yeah man it's gone from 18 cents a cup they charge 2.49 for to 24 cents they now charge 2.89 a cup they just can't swing the free refills anymore.
Yeah and now they lose the parent vote as to where they eat and drink! Cheaper to buy ready made burgers, easy to cook, and freezer fries, make it fun for the kids, wrap the burgers in wax paper, do a plastic cup for fries or a paper cone, put them on the floor on cushions with a sippy cup of sprite and have a good time!

I witnessed shrinkflation for years in grocery - this is nothing new. How we knew it was happening? Every new package size change came with a change in UPC. As soon as a product we had carried for a long time stopped ringing up at the register, it was bc the new UPC hadn't been added to the point of sale database. Nine times out of ten it was because the manufacturer reduced the package size, and didn't inform anyone at the retail level. There are manufacturers that self-distribute; they manage and stock out their own products (potato chips for example).
That's why meal kits with chicken are complete trash. They're pumped full of so much water that the chicken disintegrates while just adding it to the pan.... Ugh
When ground beef goes on sale, don't buy it. Water is added to the meat in the grinder

When Fast Food Is No Longer Fast Nor Cheap. I Was Shocked To See How Much More Expensive These Food Items (Exactly The Same) Were With A Coupon Then Last Month
In Australia our Dominos have started charging for "upgrades" when you use a coupon. It used to be you could get ANY side with a "1 pizza and 2 sides" coupon for the coupon price, but now the only side you can get is garlic bread or pepsi. Anything else is an extra $2 per side. So that $29 coupon (the price has also gone up) with upgrades is now a $33 coupon which is actually the normal price without the coupon. I just put in an order to test it without checking out, and using the coupon it says "You Saved $0.24"
OMG! The checken sandwiches went from 2 for 6.95 to 2 for $7. JK... some to fthese are massive.
We stopped eating fast food or eating out all the time and do meal planning and strategic grocery shopping - saves about 900/mo. Nine hundred. Eating out is a scam.
It sounds like a ton but it was one daily fast food lunch for one adult, once or twice a week for the other adult, and a few times a month and a sit down dinner at a restaurant for the family once or twice a month. "it's quick and cheap" then we did the math and no it's not.

Why outside of the terrible US do so many countries wrap every fruit or veggie in plastic. Europe especially. Boasting of being progressive in everything and then can't figure out that wrapping every piece of produce in plastic is whole unnecessary and creating waste that doesn't decompose. Er....I mean Europe is perfect in every way.
Don't even. I rarely do my own shopping any more because I'm disabled, but I managed to get out last week and went to the supermarket. This is a poor example. Has more to do with standardization and building code than shrinkflation.
Plus different qualities of timber are available.
Load More Replies..."The true measurement of a 2x4 is actually about 1.5″ x 3.5″. When the board is first rough sawn from the log, it is a true 2x4, but the drying process and planning of the board reduce it to the finished 1.5″ x 3.5″ size. The lumber is then sold as a “2x4” because the cost of the drying and machining are figured in."
Today I learned. I mean, not that I'd ever need it as I live in Metricland, but still, good to know ;)
Load More Replies...ehem, they are called 2x4's as the cross section measures 2 inches by 4 inches. Did they shrink the inch too? What a whole load of mayham that will result in...
2x4 is a trade size, and they haven't measured 2"x4" in a very long time. They were standardized as 1.5x3.5 surfaced on four sides nearly 70 years ago.
Load More Replies...It has nothing to do with building codes. It's all about being able to sell more while taking up less space. Something like 30% less volume. Not to mention they use green wood now.
Isn't 2x4 the actual measurement in inches? Have inches reduced in size? Hmm, perhaps they are getting smaller so they will soon be centimetres. ;)
Not in the US. 2x4 is the nominal dimension. They're actually 3.5"x1.5". Been that way since the 50's or 60's. I know it confuses everyone, but it's not a money grab. All the structural structural calculations built into our building code are based on studs of that size. Our houses would all be falling down if lumber companies just started shrinking structural components.
