Life is full of tiny details you might never have noticed… and they’re right under your nose. Go to any one of our homes and you’ll find hundreds of items, big and small. Of course, we all know how to use each and every one of them. There’s no question about that. Right? Well, not quite.
As it turns out, you might have been using some of these common items completely wrong or you might not have known about their alternative uses. Meanwhile, even things that you use every single day have some features that might have sparked your curiosity to ask your parents about when you were just a kid, but now you just gloss over and ignore them completely.
Bored Panda invites you to enjoy this list, going from learning how to peel bananas “the right way” and how to get Tic Tacs out of their container to learning all about the hidden functions of the various weird parts of pens, backpacks, pants, and much, much more. Upvote your fave pics and, when you’re done, check out our earlier post about the hidden side of even more common everyday things right here.
Warning: you might accidentally become a Ravenclaw and want to bombard your friends with all of this new knowledge.

Eating An Orange
Peeling an orange doesn’t have to be hard and messy. If you cut the top and bottom off and then make a cut on its side, it will unroll in a nice line of orange segments.
I am one of those people who can bite into the peel to get it going. From the reactions I get, this is not a wide spread ability.
I'm pretty sure we all have the ability - most of us chose not to, though.
Load More Replies...That's no orange. So the hack is: When eating an orange, peel a tangerine.
Heating A Meal In A Microwave
When heating up food in the microwave, make sure to create a small hole in the middle. This way the heat will distribute evenly and your meal will all be the same temperature.
In my family we always broke it in half before cooking it...cutting it would be way harder.
Load More Replies...No. Heat up, mix, then heat up again. For things like pizza, brownies and breads, wrap in a damp paper towel or sprinkle some water on it.
A drip coffee filter, moistened and draped over the bowl or plate, prevents spatter inside the microwave while still allowing steam to escape.
Codes On Your Makeup
On the back of your makeup products, you can often find numbers like: "6M", "12M" or "24M". They represent the life of the product on your shelf after opening. So in the above example, you have about 12 months to use this face cream before you should think about throwing it out and replacing it.
I Just learnt this recently. Should really be more widely advertised
Load More Replies...I'm kinda surprised about the fact that not everyone knew about it
Load More Replies...Thing is, stuff like this doesn’t really go bad, it just dries up and/or loses some of its efficacy. Same goes for OTC and prescription medications. If I buy something like this that I might keep long term, I use a marker to write my purchase date on it. I mean, it’s no good having the label say it’s good for 12 months if you can’t remember how long ago you bought it.
I do that with food too - no more wondering when that pack of ham was opened, or how long that jar of chutney has been lurking at the back of the fridge! Some cosmetic products can go bad, however, particularly wet formulas. The preservatives help prevent bacterial growth but after the time shown will not be as effective so are at risk of becoming contaminated. This can lead to skin or eye infections, so it's a good idea to be cautious! Pots that you dip your fingers in are a bigger risk than a pump dispenser, for example, and anything that comes into contact with your mucus membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) should be treated with extra care.
Load More Replies...People are gullible. Most things don't go bad anywhere close the the date. Manufacturers and even many food producers put a shorter date that may represent worst case scenario if that. I eat yogurts there are 4 months past expiry and taste the same. Goes for meds too. All they want to do is sell more and have a technicality if sued. Make sure you have a fridge thermometer in warmest place (top shelf on door) and keep within safe zone for very perishable food, usually fruit, veg, animal proteins.
Canned food can last for decades, just sniff before you eat!
Load More Replies...In Brazil, everything must be labeled with manufacturing and expiration dates. I thought it were common practice!
According to Dieter Rams, one of the most influential industrial designers in the world, what sets good design apart from bad design is that the former is innovative, makes the product useful, aesthetic, and understandable. That's why form, not just function is important; while over-design products tend to fail because they might make customers and users confused as to what exactly they're supposed to do.
It’s fascinating how many seemingly simple items have hidden features because they're integrated into the product so seamlessly. The design decisions behind many of these probably took dozens (if not hundreds) of hours to get just right as RnD employees sketched everything out, built prototypes, and then went back to the drawing board.
What you see in front of your eyes is the condensed labor of countless minds polishing, honing, and improving details to their limits.
Cleaning Blenders
After you’ve made your smoothie you have to wash that blender. It can be difficult and, no matter how hard you try, the smell of the ingredients can stay for a long time. But there is a very simple way to get your blender perfectly clean. After making your smoothie, just pour some water in it, add a splash of dishwashing liquid, blend it, and it will wash itself. All you need to do now is just rinse it off.
That's fine as long as you add a little bit of vinegar in the rinsing water.
I do something similar when washing jars for recycling. I half fill the jar with water put the lid on tight and give a really good shake. Cleans each jar out perfectly.
Bonus, your next smoothie will get all that grease and bits of food off your teeth.
And if it's an immersion (stick) blender just put it in a glass or tall container with water and soap. So easy.
Our blender is 20 years old, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the owner’s manual. But the bottom screws off, you just... clean it.
Load More Replies...Little Metal Plate On A Stapler
Nearly every stapler has two functions! The more common setting bends the staple back onto itself, ensuring that your papers will be held together tight. But if you rotate the base plate, the staple will bend outward, which is meant to be used for a looser hold that you can more easily remove later.
I just forcibly pull the backs back when I want to remove the staple lol
Load More Replies...I don't use a stapler now, but when I worked in an office, used to do this regularly.
Drink Cartons
If you pour milk from the other side of the carton there’s less milk sloshing around and it’s easier to hold it steady. It may seem weird, but give it a try and see how it works.
Nothing to do with milk sloshing around. You do it this way to allow air in to displace the liquid, resulting in smoother pouring.
Uh...yeah. The air means it's smoother because...wait for it....the milk isn't sloshing around when the carton "gasps" for air.
Load More Replies...That’s the first thing I thought of! Important for not spilling it all over the place and having to smell it burn off.
Load More Replies...If you are going to keep the carton in the fridge or use it quickly then stab a hole the other side of the top from the spout with a knife. That makes the flow a lot smoother and quicker.
Quart and gallon motor oil containers are built the same way for the same reason.
and you are less likely to squeeze it meaning the liquid goes everywhere
In Chile that used to be the norm like 30 years ago, but too many of them got punctured so it's tetra pak now.
Load More Replies...Some of these design decisions are quite literally life-saving. Like the holes in pen caps and popsicle sticks being hollow to prevent choking if swallowed. Other design details are a matter of functionality. Like the lash tabs on backpacks used to attach rope and tools.
Meanwhile, parts of products that look like they were made solely for aesthetic reasons sometimes have actual functions. For instance, the raised ‘57’ mark on Heinz condiment bottles is actually the sweet spot that makes ketchup pour out faster if you tap it.
The holes near the bottoms of some trainers aren’t just for show, either: they’re used for ventilation and give you the ability to tie your laces in a different way to better support your ankles. Do you know of any other things with hidden purposes that we might all have been using wrong all this time? Let us know in the comment section, dear Readers!
Extra Little Piece Of Fabric
Sure, you can use the button to replace a missing one and you can use the piece of fabric to patch up a hole. But they're actually there so you can test how the fabric reacts to different detergents.
I agree, and even after you test you can still use them to patch up holes! :)
Load More Replies...Yup, that’s what it says, although I feel like by the time I need it, that thing is long gone :)
Load More Replies...The extra square comes with nice garments, it’s not a regional thing
Load More Replies...The button is for when you lose a button to buy a replacement button by matching it up with the sample
My Mom knew that, had a drawer full of those! I forget where I put them so most of my clothes are tie dyed.
Now I feel guilty for all of these considerate little packets that I've just thrown away immediately.
with all the cost cutting that companies love to do, I'm surprised this is still standard practice for anything less than a high-end shirt
You're Probably Using Too Much Toothpaste
Toothpaste ads usually show a gorgeous dollop of toothpaste that runs along the entire length of the brush, but the truth is that you only need a pea-sized amount to get your teeth clean. The ads feature larger amounts for the sake of aesthetics and to encourage you to use up more product.
There's a technical name for the right amount of toothpaste: it's called a nerdle. Same root as nerd, meaning a small piece.
Actually, all you need to get your teeth clean is a toothbrush. Toothpaste was invented before plastic made it easy to make toothbrushes that weren’t too abrasive for your gums. Children who live in places without fluoridated water need toothpaste for fluoride, but once you have your adult teeth, fluoride doesn’t make any difference. Rotting food stuck in your teeth is the main cause of bad breath, so flossing your teeth before you brush is a good plan. If you floss and brush daily and still have bad breath, you may have an underlying health issue that should be looked into.
No no no. Wrong again. The recommended amount of toothpaste by professionals is 1,5 — 2 cm to coat the entire toothbrush. Children under the age of 6 should be using a pea sized amount, but for adults it’s not enough. Your teeth won’t get clean, and you will not get enough fluoride. //Swedish citizen, where modern dentistry was founded.
Does anyone else find it weird that a swoop of toothpaste was described as GORGEOUS?
Toothpaste kills the beneficial bacteria, which stave off cavity-, bad breath-, and infection-causing bacteria, in your mouth, and it's the bad bacteria that grow back first. So unless you're brushing your teeth in the morning and at night and after each meal, you're going to have a higher incidence of cavities and bad breath than if you didn't brush your teeth at all. I know just about everyone is going to call B.S. on this, but then explain to me why dental study skulls have to be imported from countries where toothpaste use is uncommon, and most people die of old age with a full set of intact teeth.
"Unless you're brushing your teeth in the morning and at night" That is what you're supposed to do, toothpaste is made to be used twice per day. Countries with low toothpaste use tend to be poorer as well, meaning their food isn't as sweet.
Load More Replies...If using too much toothpaste is my biggest problem, I think I'll be ok.
Non Wire Hangers
Wooden hangers were created with a specific purpose in mind. The specific type of wood used in most hangers is hand-selected to repel moths and other unwanted insects and pests that can harm clothing. The wood in the hanger helps make sure that clothes are not only unwrinkled, but that they stay undamaged while they are hanging out in closets.
How funny ( I mean not funny ha ha) that someones alleged abuse has become part of our worldwide pop culture. I’m not hating, I’m just thinking about it. I’ve said that same line. Like we ALL know exactly what you meant. I don’t know, it’s just weird when you think about it.
Load More Replies...Only hangers made of cedar would repel moths. This isn't the case with most wooden hangers. Wooden hangers are just more durable than wire and don't crease the clothing as much.
Non-biodegradable waste. Too thin like wire, always make a crease at the shoulders.
Load More Replies...Wire and plastic hangers are vile...LOL...but I don't think all wooden hangers today, not the cheap ones anyway, are made from cedar
"A WIRE HANGER!!!!!!!!!!" - "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman" and "Mommie Dearest"
Wooden hangers have not enough of any of the natural wood repellants to really stop moths. Ask a person who moved from the UK with a considerable wool collex to the US and lost a lot of great stuff.
They have to be cedar. It also works to buy cedar wood and just have it in your closet. It’s also possible to buy cedar oil in a spritzing bottle and spray it on plywood and have that in your closet—but don’t forget to reapply regularly.

The arrow points to the side of the car your gas cap can be found on. If your car is older, or doesn't have an arrow, the direction of the fuel hose sometimes indicates where the gas cap can be found.
Everybody who learns about this gets super smug about it right away, ha ha. I did too!
Load More Replies...Not 100%, especially on old or vintage cars. My gas tank is filled in the back
Or you can just see which side your exhaust pipe is on. The gas cap will be on the other side.
Not quite as easy to see from the driver's seat though... 😉
Load More Replies...on one of my cars, this arrow was on the temperature gauge, not the gas gauge; I have no idea why
most cars don't even have temperature gauges anymore
Load More Replies...i found this out yesterday bc my bf and his mom ( he has learners )were driving me and my cousin to school as well as himself and he needed gas.
Note the use of the word "sometimes". I've had a car - can't remember the make or model now, but the arrow pointed to the opposite side of the gas cap.
So where do you look for the fuel hose?? I know where my gas cap is, 17 yrs Kia Sorrento! I love my car!
Wow. When the family has more than one car, you forget which side the tank is on. TY
This I found out late in life. Darn good idea, but there are still people who go to the gas pump on the wrong side...
Just so you know: the hose isn't always a good indicator. Dunno about the arrow, probably works, just never had it around here.
Shopping Cart Loops
There are loops on shopping carts that can be used to hold your grocery bags, keep them upright if they have fragile items, or store extra if you’ve got a lot of groceries.
But where would I dangle naughty children then? Those loops fit their belts perfectly.
plastic bags are going to be forbidden soon in germany, and are replaced by paper/recycle
Or someone doesnt look and crashes into ya cart (or kids usually pushing the other cart and not looking)
Load More Replies...oh, first one I never knew about... because there are no such shopping carts in my country. We use simple ones without hidden secrets
Good point, now when I do notice them I'll remember to help more.
Load More Replies...Maybe the cart is full of dog food and cement mix, so the toothpaste and cheese snacks could be hung on these loops.
Load More Replies...In North America the plague isn't under control so we in Canada have gone back to one use bags.
Load More Replies...Using A Microwave More Efficiently
The limited space inside a microwave has always been inconvenient when you want to have a meal together with your friend or partner. It would be easier and more convenient if you could prepare both meals at the same time. Most of us don’t realize that the whole space in the microwave is good for heating, even above the spinning plate. To heat 2 plates at once, simply put the first plate on the microwave platter pushed to one side, then place an upside-down coffee mug next to it and place the second plate on top of the mug.
MORE IMPORTANTLY... NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER... Put a cold wet spoon into hot soup in/from your microwave. It can actually EXPLODE the food. And its burns like the Dickenson, sticking and boiling your skin. Been There Done That 🙄😭
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, most microwave warming plates can only accommodate the width of the average dinner plate, with zero extra space to add a mug to elevate a second plate. Because most of us don’t have the room for an industrial sized micro in our kitchens, or the money to buy one.
In the photo it seems like the plates are small, the microwave seems only slightly above-average.
Load More Replies...But for most food, for hygenic reasons (hygiene of the microwave at least) you put a plastic-lid over the food. That wouldn't work with this idea, so - naw, I'll stick to the classic way rather than cleanign the mw every day.
Works, but 2x the material being heated means 2x the time needed to do so,
There are 4 intelligent people in my family- 3 tertiary educated, all with higher than average IQs and yet we have never considered this.
Obviously a lid to cover your food so you don’t dirty the inside of the microwave is out of the question. Good luck trying to clean all the tiny lil holes in ur microwave with all the splash back and spillage if it falls over.
To Chill A Drink Bottle Faster
Wet a paper towel, wrap it around any warm drink, and put it in the freezer. It’ll be cold in literally 5-10 minutes!
Better idea.....get a large bowl. Fill with ice and a liberal amount of salt and a little water. Place the drink in the middle, and swirl the ice/saltwater around it. It supercools it in under a minute.
Aaaah, like an old-fashioned ice-cream maker! Brilliant!
Load More Replies...I do this all the time.....works great! (I give it 15-25 minutes though)
I think most Auusies know this one, men always want their beer cold right now!
Confirmed via at least one decent experiment: https://physics.stackexchange.com/a/121329
I have an ice maker in my freezer. I just stick my bottle in the ice bin for about 15-20 minutes.
Getting Tic Tacs Out Of The Container
There is a thing inside the lid that's designed to get just one piece out. Flip the box, then turn it on its side, and open, there should be one Tik Tac sitting in its place.
Eating Tic Tacs one at a time is the only correct way to eat a whole box without eating any calories.
Load More Replies...No! You must 1) pull the white plastic part, 2) throw it away, 3) open your mouth, 4) tilt your head back and 5) GO!
That "thing" inside the lid fits the hole of the box, so that the box gets shut tightly when you close it. It's not meant to give you one tic tac xD
Right? Plus it seems a lot of bother when you can simply just tip it upside down into your hand!
Load More Replies...Useful to know this if you want to offer them to someone else and be hygienic. (I did know but haven't bought them for years.)
I assume you can use this slow and inefficient method of getting tic tacs while your laboriously peeling your orange as per the earlier post.
Prevent A Locked-Down Work PC From Sleeping
If you need to step away from your computer, place your laser mouse over the top of your analog watch. The mouse will read the ticking of the second or minute hand and will keep your computer active, so you don’t have to retype your password.
that's what I thought too, but I think it is wear-marks.
Load More Replies...that way someone can steal your computer, optical mouse, and watch. and since you left it unlocked, they can also steal all your files. 9/10 thieves appreciate this! (the hold-out doesn't like analog watches. strictly an apple watch kind of thief.)
They could do the same at night, the thing with both cases is, they would need to get into the building.
Load More Replies...I don't know which is more hassle, removing and reattaching your watch or just entering the password again..
Nooo! Your work computer may contain confidential data not ment for other employees. Also, if you work in a public setting, this is a good way to get data stolen. This is such bad advise and if IT sees you doing this they will not be happy.
It would be easier and less time consuming to type in the password ... with this plan you have to take off your watch, balance the mouse on the watch, put your watch back on ... it's a futile attempt to save a second when you actually spend more time doing this.
It's a stupid tip and it can get you fired if your company has a policy that you need to lock your PC whenever you have to leave I have disabled people's accounts because of this. Some of them got fired after they got in touch with HR complaining about a disabled account. It just isn't worth it.
I thought it was for people at home, where they wouldn't necessarily have their watch on their wrist. I can't imagine doing this at work in a company office.
Load More Replies...The function is to prevent others to use your account/log-in. Why surpass it?
The person is working from home, so nobody else is around. They want to bypass the security, but can't because of company IT settings.
Load More Replies...There is an app called Caffeine that will keep your computer awake for as long as the app is active.
Key Rings
Use a staple remover to remove keys from key rings instead of abusing your nails.
Plus it will gouge up your keyring making it uncomfortable to hold and the keys won't slide around on it as easily. This is just a bad idea. And it's not an example of "not using an item properly " because it's a staple remover, not a key-ring opener.
Load More Replies...I don't. I'm a programmer, things I definitely don't have are paper, stapler, staple remover, pen, pencil, and all of this category of office tools
Load More Replies...IF there is already a key or ring on it, you can slide the key to the end and use it as leverage to open the ring
Some of us have thick and healthy nails and never have this problem.
I can just imagine the remover puncturing my fingers with its points as I fumble to get the keys on. This seems bad
Using Foil
Isn't it annoying when you need to use foil, often the whole roll comes out. There’s a simple solution right there on the box, it even says: “Press Ends To Lock Roll” and that’s exactly what it does. If you look on the sides of the box, you will see the little grips, you just push them in and they hold the roll in place.
So I had an adulting fail the other day... Picked up a box of tin foil. Box was broken and I didn't notice. Foil slipped out and unspooled all over the floor. There was much unspooling 😟 *curls up with embarrassment*
This exact thing happened to me. It was like it happened in slow motion and I was powerless to stop it. I could only watch as it streamed out in a silver streak of embarrassment.
Load More Replies...FYI. There's no difference between shiny side and dull side. When manufactured, to prevent tearing, there are two reels of aluminium. Ergo, one side which goes through the rollers will be shinier than the other.
the specific box, not every manufacturer provides this option
Well...I'll be darned...why doesn't someone tell us these things...???It's like they want us to be on CANDID CAMERA and watch what happens like in the comment below that was VERY funny! Whoopsies!
Dont forget the sharp cutting edge to make portioning the exact amount of foil you need in a straight line...lots of people dont realise this is on the box and usually just pull the whole roll out and tear into uneven pieces !
That's one of those 'only works once' clever little 'well it was a good idea' product enhancements! After the thin, weak, semi-cardboard box bends it stops working. What I did was invest in a real pair of kitchen scissors and just throw the box in the recycle bin.
Good to know, just looked at my tin foil box and it has the tabs. All set to go now no more of the roll falling out of the box.
Peeling Bananas
Most people peel their banana from the top part, which is wrong. The best way to peel a banana is from the bottom, so you don’t squeeze the fruit. In fact, monkeys apparently figured this out a long time ago.
But then your left digging that little black nub out of the banana. Fingernails help open from the top with no squishing
If a banana is perfectly ripe the little black nub will come out when you peel it.
Load More Replies...Monkeys also eat the peel as it's the most flavorful part. Just because monkeys do it doesn't mean we should do it too.
It's not for the flavour but because they love getting high on all of that bananadine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoKwWECf5tM
Load More Replies...What is referred to as the bottom part is actually the top. Bananas grow upwards. 735970-5fe...99ed41.jpg
Peeling a banana has NEVER been a problem for me, even when I peel it from the "wrong" end. I don't know why everyone has such trouble peeling one of mother nature's most accessible fruits!
Fun fact: Bananas are technically not a fruit; they’re a starch (but no fruit salad is complete without them, that’s for sure).
Load More Replies...Monkeys don't eat bananas in the wild. Bananas like that are man-made, not existing in the wild.
And monkeys still throw their feces at each other too. No, I'll eat bananas like a normal person.
The bottom of the banana is the part with the stem, bananas grow up, not down.
Slotted Patches On Backpacks
It's called a lash tab, and it's there for you to attach whatever you'd like to your bag. For instance, a hiker could lash a sleeping roll to their bag using the lash tab. Originally, it was added to bags to carry tools like axes.
I like how everything is designed with carrying axes and knives in mind...
there's no problem an axe can't solve, albeit not always in the desired fashion.
Load More Replies...I bought my son one and asked lady at counter in surf shop if they have stuff you can hang off them, she replied that it's just a brand logo!!!.....
Loading Your Blender
You might be loading your blender incorrectly. Start with liquids and go from there. Add the solid components last. The motion created by the swirling liquids will suck the solid items down and keep the blades from simply tunneling through the middle of the solids.
But the liquids will just pour through the berries etc if you put it in last. So it really makes no difference
The best way to do it is to start with liquid and then slowly add the solids as opposed to doing it all at once
Load More Replies...Well it does to mine, liquid also makes the blades less stressed and that way it can cut through everything evenly
Load More Replies...That’s such a neat trick! I aught to try doing that. I always have trouble…
Sounds a bit odd, but I wouldn't stick my head in there to find out!
Actually, this is a great idea. If you load the blender with fruit, it compacts around the blender blades.
Rearview Mirror
Use the rearview mirror tab to stave off those bright lights. Next time some guy has his high beams on and blinds you through your rearview mirror, remember to press down on the tab of your rearview mirror, so it angles down. That way, the light reflects downwards without impacting your field of vision.
On manual tilt versions, a tab is used to adjust the mirror between “day” and “night” positions. In the day view position, the front surface is tilted, and the reflective back side gives a strong reflection.
And use your MIDDLE finger to flip this switch, (for the jerk behind you with his brights on). ;-)
I'm kind of upset that people who have been driving for years, including at night on crowded roads, would not know that.
I miss this thing! Mine as an "intelligent" mirror...always reacts too late
Storing Peanut Butter
Store your peanut butter upside down. That way, rather than pooling on top, the oil is easier to mix back in and you can enjoy your peanut butter with much less hassle.
Until a child doesn't screw it on all the way... there will be much hassle.
If a child is in my kitchen, we have bigger problems than how the peanut butter is stored.
Load More Replies...But if the oil pools on the bottom, you have to shove the spoon or fork through the very resistant dried out peanut butter to get down to it. Basically, there’s really no good way to store natural peanut butter. It still separates, and the jars it comes in are never roomy enough to remix it without either making a mess, with oil shooting out the top and/or not being able to get it blended very well.
Genius! I don't get the kind that has oil separation to try it, though.
That means your peanut butter is full of emulsifiers to keep it from separating. Peanut butter is much better when it’s just peanuts.
Load More Replies...My mom had her nut butter like this and I didn’t know why. But it’s good to know!
This is only for "natural" nut butters, aka non-commercial (like Jiff, skippy).
Use this for long-term paint storage as well, keeps the VOC’s from evaporating
I do this but put the jar in a plastic container without the lid!
Using Plungers
Spending a bit of time understanding your plungers can be useful, though, because different plungers are used for different problems. A flat plunger is fine for a sink, but if you need to use one on your toilet you’ll need one with a tapered end.
I didn't realized you could use plungers for sinks, it just never occurred to me *face palm*
Just remember to cover the sinks overflow cutout with your hand or you'll get a surprise!
Load More Replies...The tapered end can usually be folded into the plunger to make it flat, if necessary. I've used both types in a sink, too.
I would never use a plunger that’s been in my toilet for *anything* else!
Load More Replies...I won't do my meditation today, I'll just spend a bit of time understanding my plungers.
I've used the plunger on the left to stick to my car window, which fell part way into the door, and pull it up into the runner again.
Never use a toliet plunger on a sink!!! Not just because it's been in a toliet. A toliet plunger pushes more air. The pipe to a toliet has a bigger diameter than sink. You can burst the pipe under your sink causing a lot more damage.
Or maybe use a sink plunger that hasn't been in a toilet?
Load More Replies...I once walked into an unlocked shared bathroom and my housemate had the plunger half way up his ass.
Also understanding what you should and shouldn't put down a sink, a toilet, or your colon would mean you don't need a selection of plungers to get you through the day.
A fun plunger fact: you're supposed to create a seal and pull UP rather than forcing it down. The truck is doing it forcefully, yet gently enough to not splash.
Padlock Hole For Smoother Use
If the key isn’t turning because it’s rusty, just pour a few drops of oil in the hole, and it will get everything moving again.
Better to just keep a tube of graphite around and use that as the oil can attract more dust and gunk
All you really need is two items in your DIY kit: WD40 if it's stuck and Duct Tape if it's loose. :D
It's actually to let water out of the lock so it doesn't get rusty in the first place.
I was always told these were to allow any rain/water/liquid to drain out of the lock to help prevent it from rusting up.
Using Kitchen Sponges
Your sponges might be making your dishes dirtier. If you’re not regularly sanitizing your sponges, you could just be wiping your dishes and counters with bacteria.
Keep your sponges away from raw meat. If you're dealing with leftovers of meat juice, use a paper towel instead. To properly sanitize your sponges, immerse them in boiling water for five minutes. Alternatively, soak a sponge in water and heat it on high in a microwave for one minute, or pop it into the dishwasher with a heated dry cycle.
Just how many paper towels do you want someone going through a year? If nobody in your family has gotten sick from using the regular sponge, I don't see a need to stop using them.
U can use kitchen cloths, and sanitise them via washing machine and sunlight drying
Load More Replies...Who on earth wipes up spills, especially raw meat juice and then uses the same sponge to wash dishes?? That's so dumb.
I use sponges and throw them in the washing machine and let them air dry. They last a good while.
No one uses sponges for that in Norway. We use dish washing brush or cloth (depending on the purpose).
I haven't been sick because of this... i'll just continue my way... it's working
This should not be an issue of you rinse the items with/in hot water after you've used a sponge and soap.
I use a soft scrub cleanser with bleach to clean sinks and sanitize my sponge at the same time, then just rinse the sponge
Cutting Soft Cheese
Use dental floss to cut soft cheeses.
Easy! Manufacture a cheese-flavoured floss, go on Shark Tank, get one of them to invest, sell it and enjoy the millions pouring in. I charge only 10% for the idea.
Load More Replies...It doesn't look very well cut, I think a sharp knife would do a better job
Or use an actual cheese slicer, which is basically a wire held taught with a handle...
I use fishing string to cut wet clay for sculptures. Bet it would work on cheeses too.
There are such things as cheese cutting boards, which have an attached cutter with a metal thread for slicing. Much much easier than using a knife or wasting dental floss (and risking only having mint flavored floss in the house).
A Potato Peeler
A potato peeler is a versatile tool. Use it to grate cheese as well. Put your peeler to work shaving long, thin strips of parmesan cheese from the block, creating paper-thin carrots for salads, or even slicing an onion in record time.
Just buy a new one (i don't know how you could sharpen it, really:)), i have the cheap one from ikea for 7 years now and it's still sharp enough for onions :).
Load More Replies...My husband peels toward himself, just like the picture shows, and says it’s safer that way. I peel away from me, so the peels fall into the garbage can, and which I think is safer. We have had this debate Every. Single. Time. we need to peel something—-and our 20th anniversary is coming up in May 2021.
I presume there may also be some toilet roll issues ...
Load More Replies...Also good for peeling kiwis... just make sure they're not overly ripe.
In Finland we also have a special tool as a cheese peeler, you can also use it as peeling potatoes etc. but they sold as a specific for peeling cheese :D
They’re also great for shaving chocolate bars to get nice chocolate flaws for the top of cakes and desserts 😋
The Bottom Drawer
That drawer at the bottom of your oven will keep your food warm.
I have only ever bought double ovens and they don't have them.
Load More Replies...Unless you live in rural or country areas where mice are jerks and use the drawer as a way into your stove insulation and make a nest I dont recommend using it.
Gasp! How can you bring yourself to type such a word!!! 😮 Seriously though, k n o b is such an ordinary word Bored Panda!
Load More Replies...All my stoves have had a warming drawer, my present one even has a temperature control k**b next to the oven temperature k**b so you can set how warm you want the drawer to be.
One Side Of A Bobby Pin Is Bumpier
Many hairpins have a grooved and a smooth side. The grooved side is meant to face in towards to scalp to provide a little extra grip.
So you're supposed to put the end with the sharp metal pointy side against your scalp? I'm calling shenanigans.
The ends of Bobby pins are dipped in a plastic drip thing, so they aren't sharp (the one is the picture is different than what I've seen in that it seems to have sharp ends?)
Load More Replies...Nope, it's the opposite. Flat side to the scalp, that's the reason the end of the flat side is longer.
And now a lot of them are curved, so if you do this, it'll stick out from your head!
Load More Replies...Legitimately the best ear cleaner next to the lid of a Bic crystal pen!
Load More Replies...No, because then the sticky-outy part scrapes your head and also then the bobby pin can't lie flat. Duh. Also, is that a cold-war vintage Russian home-made bobby-pin? Gnarly looking.
A Strip Of Black Dots That Runs Along The Outside Edge Of Your Windshield
That black strip is called a "frit" and it essentially has two purposes. It provides an etched surface for the adhesive to adhere to, which bonds the glass to the frame. And on the outside of the glass, it protects the adhesive from ultraviolet light and covers any unsightly adhesive. The dots are there just to make it look nice.
I am a mechanic who installs windshields on a regular basis and not even I think that info is "useful"
Load More Replies...If I’m not mistaken, those dots are made of a ceramic material that helps dispersing the heat in a gradient along the borders of the glass in contact with the metal frame, so that it stops heat-related cracks (on places with high temperatures or thermal variations, it might be a thing). But, surely, this is totally unrelated to the post’s idea of the “wrong use” of something.
I think the dots are also for heat-related reasons. Black absorbs heat, and in extreme temperatures can melt the adhesive holding the windshield in place, along with plastic and rubber. The dots help dissipate the heat around the edges of the black bands so it's not all concentrated at the edges.
For years I thought the dot patterns were a built--in radio antenna.
You're thinking of the lines for the heater on your rear windshieldWhich sometimes also act as a radio antenna.
Load More Replies...That’s cool! I wish people would stop making such negative comments, though. Covering one up now! Hope I’m helping spread some positivity today. 😊
Suckers Have Hollow Sticks With Holes Near The Top
The stick is hollow so that any child who accidentally swallows the stick won't choke to death. And as for the hole, it's there to hold your sucker in place. Without it, the ball-shaped candy on top would just fall right off the stick. During production, a bit of sugar paste is added into the hole, which helps keep the sucker attached to the stick.
When I was a kid I tried to get the last bit of candy from the hole with sharp scissors. Still have a tiny scar on my finger. But I got it out!
There is no way in hell a hole that size will provide sufficient air exchange to keep a kid alive.
I've seen this before and it turns out that itty bitty hole doesn't allow for enough air to do any good. Plus you'd have to swallow it exactly right.
Literally have never seen this. Looking at dum dums and blow pops right now and these holes do not seem to exist. Must be brand specific.
That is a lollipop, not a sucker. Or chupa-chup, if you want to sound exotic. Suckers are born every minute.
Well, I’ve heard that such holes are meant to help locking the candy horizontally, as it hardens through it. Otherwise, it could fall from the plastic tube. Aaand... is it just me or those two apples on top of the stripes are looking like a creepy grin!?
Had to go back to the pic but yes, I see the grin!
Load More Replies...Except on Dum-dums. if you swallow the stick from a dum-dum, you're just screwed.
Both Ends Of A Utility Blade Can Be Useful
Utility knife blades often have perforated blades that can be snapped off when the cutting edge gets too dull. They also have a little slot on the very back of the handle that you can slip the blade into to snap it off cleanly and easily.
yeah, don't use these to directly cut cardboard. learned that the hard way
Duh, that's why this feature is plainly illustrated on just about every disposable utility knife package.
Completely useless because you're just drawing attention to it. It's like screaming "DON'T LOOK OVER HERE!" — people are gonna look.
Load More Replies...U can remove the back part, use it to snap the blade section off, then pop the back part back in (the blade remover grips the old blade piece as it's broken off, so it won't fly up or hurt anyone)
Load More Replies...Dental Floss
Here’s a trick: tie your floss in a knot. It increases the tension of the floss and makes it easier to maneuver. It also makes it less likely that you’ll lose your grip. You’ll never have to disappoint a dentist again.
If you do this, won't you always floss with the same bit of floss? If you wind it around your middle finger, you can unwind the unused floss from the finger and wind the used floss around your other middle finger as you go so that you are using fresh floss every couple of teeth.
You would shift to a new part of the floss circle to get fresh floss. It still works. My teeth are close together, and the floss really digs into my fingers, so this looks like a good idea for me.
Load More Replies...Using Dishwasher
There is an art to loading a dishwasher. The middle of the dishwasher gets the cleanest. The dirtiest items should be in the middle of the bottom rack facing the spray arm. That includes heavily soiled plates, pots, and pans. Keep an eye on what items you’re placing over the detergent dispenser, too – blocking it with a large item could keep the soap from being distributed correctly.
If you make every job a game, then you can play 24/7.
Load More Replies...Or just wash them by hand for the ultimate in cleanliness and a bit of exercise.
While also using a ton more water that way. Dishwashers use less water than a sink.
Load More Replies...Does anyone besides me wash the dishes by hand before putting them in the dishwasher?
I just wash them by hand and avoid the dishwasher
Load More Replies...Wish they were more affordable. Here those are a luxury and we always have to do the dishes by hand. It can get messy with tiny sinks!
Just follow the graphic illustration that comes with your washers instructions booklet.
Cover Up Properly
Many people either take the flap that is cut out in the toilet seat cover and either rip it off or position it to be in the back of the seat. Instead, the proper way to use one of these disposable covers is with the flap facing forward. This is supposed to help it more easily flush down the toilet.
That flap placed in front is to protect you from contact with whatever the person before you left in that middle space, especially from kids.
Yes!! With it facing forward it isn't even touching the water so this doesn't make sense.
Load More Replies...huh... I always thought the middle part goes into the toilet so the water grabs it and pulls it in when you flush so you don't have to touch it. interesting.
It does goes into the toilet, just read the instructions (or use logic like you did). This post is bs.
Load More Replies...Pretty sure they print instructions about this on every pack of these things. Of course in my experience the dispensers are always empty, so it doesn't really matter... but yes, the flap is meant to go in the water so that it automatically get sucked into the toilet when it's flushed so that you don't have to touch it.
Do people actually use these? It's just that (in the UK) I've never seen them.
I was way more confused about that bit of the cover than I care to admit LOL!
I question how BP could possibly know how "many people" use the toilet seat covers. Hidden cameras? lol
Thinner Bottles Leave For Colder Drinks
If you are a fan of having cold drinks, go to your sporting goods store and buy a thin bottle. You can assure yourself that with that kind bottle, you’ll always have a nice cool drink waiting to grace your lips.
Yeah, it would be nice if there was some explanation or what exactly counts as a thin bottle. The bottle in the picture looks pretty standard to me.
Load More Replies...The bottle in the photo is made of aluminum, which conducts heat faster than glass. It will cool down quicker in the refrigerator. It will also warm up faster when removed from the fridge.
This is a weird one, as I visited Japan last year and that bottle, in the picture, is solid metal, not glass.
The drinks in a store will already be in the fridge for quite a while, since they do inventory early in the morning or late at night. Therefore, when people go there to buy a drink, all the bottles are already cold
Cutting Cakes
You can use dental floss to cut soft cakes.
but do you have a knife that will lend a nice, fresh minty taste to the cake? or leave behind tiny bits of wax? prolly not. use floss! you may not regret it. (but you might.)
Load More Replies...I tried cutting with floss. I did get a nice, even piece however It wasn't a clean cut. It was very crummy.
Measuring Tape Diamonds
There are tiny markings on tape measures that are there to help you find the right position for wall studs. These black diamonds are known as “stud finders,” and they can help mark the center point between two studs.
That is more common for floor trusses. Wall studs are typically 16", 19.2", or 24", so you'll have a 1/3 chance those diamonds will be accurate.
This diamond is at 19.18" or roughly 19.2" so how do we know they aren't also at 16" and 24"? I'm not familiar with the markings just asking.
Load More Replies...The diamond marks the measurement when using five studs or rafters across a typical 8 foot sheet of plywood. 96 inches/5=19.2. Since it's an odd measurement, the diamond makes it easier than trying to measure 19.2, 38.4, 57.6, and so on. BTW: They are called "lizard piss" markings.
Actually solid concrete walls? Where do you hide the plumbing and electrics?
Load More Replies...Surely those who need to know this, e.g. in building trade, are taught it? I don't need it.
Opening A Can
You can simply use a bottle opener to open a can instead of breaking your nails.
The problem is that the people with delicate nails don't carry bottle openers
We do however carry a manicure or a nail file that can be used for those pesky tabs. Or just use a knife.
Load More Replies...Or hand it to someone who isn't concerned about their nails and have them open it.
Or just press down on the bottom end of the lid with your finger and it will raise the back end up enough to get your other fingertip underneath it to easily open.
I learned his years ago on airline travel ... stewards routinely use this or something similar.
i did that and i bent the tab and cut my finger on the first day of 2021! Ugh, what a great way to start 2021!
The Pointy Bit On A Cap Of Tubed Medicine Actually Has A Purpose
Unscrew lid, turn it around, and use the point to pierce the foil covering on most tubes of medicine.
Some people try to peel it even if it doesn't have a peel tab.
Load More Replies...Now I wonder what OTHER purpose those things can be used for, as there's apparently a "wrong use" for these. Do people ... idk, poke them in their eyes or clean their nails with them?
Plastic Disks In Bottle Caps
These inconspicuous little disks act as seals. Without them, most bottles wouldn't just leak, they'd lose all their carbonation.
It's hard to be optimistic with a misty optic! Your outlook should improve now :)
Load More Replies...Best life hack ever! I shall immediately begin to insert these into the caps of all my leaky bottles. Now where do I buy them?
I knew they were there for a reason, but again, it isn't a life hack, is it?
I remove all the plastic lids from medicine bottles, milk bottles etc for a guy who makes the into a plastic brick so he can 3D cut them into kids Prosthesis for legs arms etc. and remove any of the plastic seals, so nor I need to find another use for them.
Half of these are just fun facts or uses and have nothing to do with using the product wrong.
If the threads attaching the cloth of your umbrella to the spines is worn out, use flat waxed dental floss. Flat floss threads through the eye of a needle more easily than round floss, and waxed floss can be warmed with your fingers so it binds together. The spines have holes to attach the thread/floss to them, including on the ends, so all you need to be sure to do is carefully line the seams up so the umbrella opens properly and smoothly. Thing is, though, floss only comes in a limited number of colors, mostly bright white, though I have seen some light mint green for the flavored flosses, so you have to be OK with it not matching your umbrella color (I care less about that as I do with getting soaked when the original cotton thread breaks and the cloth detaches from the spines).
Only 2 or 3 were feature no one knows, the rest were just life hacks, and old ones at that.
A few of these reminded me of five minute crafts hacks.
