Life is full of tiny details you might never have noticed… and they’re right under your nose. Go to any one of our homes and you’ll find hundreds of items, big and small. Of course, we all know how to use each and every one of them. There’s no question about that. Right? Well, not quite.

As it turns out, you might have been using some of these common items completely wrong or you might not have known about their alternative uses. Meanwhile, even things that you use every single day have some features that might have sparked your curiosity to ask your parents about when you were just a kid, but now you just gloss over and ignore them completely.

Bored Panda invites you to enjoy this list, going from learning how to peel bananas “the right way” and how to get Tic Tacs out of their container to learning all about the hidden functions of the various weird parts of pens, backpacks, pants, and much, much more. Upvote your fave pics and, when you’re done, check out our earlier post about the hidden side of even more common everyday things right here.

Warning: you might accidentally become a Ravenclaw and want to bombard your friends with all of this new knowledge.

Eating An Orange

Eating An Orange

Peeling an orange doesn’t have to be hard and messy. If you cut the top and bottom off and then make a cut on its side, it will unroll in a nice line of orange segments.

I am one of those people who can bite into the peel to get it going. From the reactions I get, this is not a wide spread ability.

    Codes On Your Makeup

    Codes On Your Makeup

On the back of your makeup products, you can often find numbers like: "6M", "12M" or "24M". They represent the life of the product on your shelf after opening. So in the above example, you have about 12 months to use this face cream before you should think about throwing it out and replacing it.

Thing is, stuff like this doesn’t really go bad, it just dries up and/or loses some of its efficacy. Same goes for OTC and prescription medications. If I buy something like this that I might keep long term, I use a marker to write my purchase date on it. I mean, it’s no good having the label say it’s good for 12 months if you can’t remember how long ago you bought it.

I do that with food too - no more wondering when that pack of ham was opened, or how long that jar of chutney has been lurking at the back of the fridge! Some cosmetic products can go bad, however, particularly wet formulas. The preservatives help prevent bacterial growth but after the time shown will not be as effective so are at risk of becoming contaminated. This can lead to skin or eye infections, so it's a good idea to be cautious! Pots that you dip your fingers in are a bigger risk than a pump dispenser, for example, and anything that comes into contact with your mucus membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) should be treated with extra care.

People are gullible. Most things don't go bad anywhere close the the date. Manufacturers and even many food producers put a shorter date that may represent worst case scenario if that. I eat yogurts there are 4 months past expiry and taste the same. Goes for meds too. All they want to do is sell more and have a technicality if sued. Make sure you have a fridge thermometer in warmest place (top shelf on door) and keep within safe zone for very perishable food, usually fruit, veg, animal proteins.

According to Dieter Rams, one of the most influential industrial designers in the world, what sets good design apart from bad design is that the former is innovative, makes the product useful, aesthetic, and understandable. That's why form, not just function is important; while over-design products tend to fail because they might make customers and users confused as to what exactly they're supposed to do.

It’s fascinating how many seemingly simple items have hidden features because they're integrated into the product so seamlessly. The design decisions behind many of these probably took dozens (if not hundreds) of hours to get just right as RnD employees sketched everything out, built prototypes, and then went back to the drawing board.

What you see in front of your eyes is the condensed labor of countless minds polishing, honing, and improving details to their limits.

    Cleaning Blenders

    Cleaning Blenders

After you’ve made your smoothie you have to wash that blender. It can be difficult and, no matter how hard you try, the smell of the ingredients can stay for a long time. But there is a very simple way to get your blender perfectly clean. After making your smoothie, just pour some water in it, add a splash of dishwashing liquid, blend it, and it will wash itself. All you need to do now is just rinse it off.

Little Metal Plate On A Stapler

Little Metal Plate On A Stapler

Nearly every stapler has two functions! The more common setting bends the staple back onto itself, ensuring that your papers will be held together tight. But if you rotate the base plate, the staple will bend outward, which is meant to be used for a looser hold that you can more easily remove later.

Nothing to do with milk sloshing around. You do it this way to allow air in to displace the liquid, resulting in smoother pouring.

Some of these design decisions are quite literally life-saving. Like the holes in pen caps and popsicle sticks being hollow to prevent choking if swallowed. Other design details are a matter of functionality. Like the lash tabs on backpacks used to attach rope and tools.

Meanwhile, parts of products that look like they were made solely for aesthetic reasons sometimes have actual functions. For instance, the raised ‘57’ mark on Heinz condiment bottles is actually the sweet spot that makes ketchup pour out faster if you tap it.

The holes near the bottoms of some trainers aren’t just for show, either: they’re used for ventilation and give you the ability to tie your laces in a different way to better support your ankles. Do you know of any other things with hidden purposes that we might all have been using wrong all this time? Let us know in the comment section, dear Readers!

You're Probably Using Too Much Toothpaste

Toothpaste ads usually show a gorgeous dollop of toothpaste that runs along the entire length of the brush, but the truth is that you only need a pea-sized amount to get your teeth clean. The ads feature larger amounts for the sake of aesthetics and to encourage you to use up more product.

Actually, all you need to get your teeth clean is a toothbrush. Toothpaste was invented before plastic made it easy to make toothbrushes that weren’t too abrasive for your gums. Children who live in places without fluoridated water need toothpaste for fluoride, but once you have your adult teeth, fluoride doesn’t make any difference. Rotting food stuck in your teeth is the main cause of bad breath, so flossing your teeth before you brush is a good plan. If you floss and brush daily and still have bad breath, you may have an underlying health issue that should be looked into.

No no no. Wrong again. The recommended amount of toothpaste by professionals is 1,5 — 2 cm to coat the entire toothbrush. Children under the age of 6 should be using a pea sized amount, but for adults it’s not enough. Your teeth won’t get clean, and you will not get enough fluoride. //Swedish citizen, where modern dentistry was founded.

Toothpaste kills the beneficial bacteria, which stave off cavity-, bad breath-, and infection-causing bacteria, in your mouth, and it's the bad bacteria that grow back first. So unless you're brushing your teeth in the morning and at night and after each meal, you're going to have a higher incidence of cavities and bad breath than if you didn't brush your teeth at all. I know just about everyone is going to call B.S. on this, but then explain to me why dental study skulls have to be imported from countries where toothpaste use is uncommon, and most people die of old age with a full set of intact teeth.

"Unless you're brushing your teeth in the morning and at night" That is what you're supposed to do, toothpaste is made to be used twice per day. Countries with low toothpaste use tend to be poorer as well, meaning their food isn't as sweet.

Only hangers made of cedar would repel moths. This isn't the case with most wooden hangers. Wooden hangers are just more durable than wire and don't crease the clothing as much.

Wooden hangers have not enough of any of the natural wood repellants to really stop moths. Ask a person who moved from the UK with a considerable wool collex to the US and lost a lot of great stuff.

They have to be cedar. It also works to buy cedar wood and just have it in your closet. It’s also possible to buy cedar oil in a spritzing bottle and spray it on plywood and have that in your closet—but don’t forget to reapply regularly.

A Little Arrow Next To The Gas Icon On A Car's Dashboard

The arrow points to the side of the car your gas cap can be found on. If your car is older, or doesn't have an arrow, the direction of the fuel hose sometimes indicates where the gas cap can be found.

    Using A Microwave More Efficiently

    Using A Microwave More Efficiently

The limited space inside a microwave has always been inconvenient when you want to have a meal together with your friend or partner. It would be easier and more convenient if you could prepare both meals at the same time. Most of us don’t realize that the whole space in the microwave is good for heating, even above the spinning plate. To heat 2 plates at once, simply put the first plate on the microwave platter pushed to one side, then place an upside-down coffee mug next to it and place the second plate on top of the mug.

Unfortunately, most microwave warming plates can only accommodate the width of the average dinner plate, with zero extra space to add a mug to elevate a second plate. Because most of us don’t have the room for an industrial sized micro in our kitchens, or the money to buy one.

note: some stoneware & porcelain have glazing which will crack under dry heat, such as microwaving w no food on it. this is usually the result of absorbing heat from the item with food, but has no way of eliminating the excess heat.

    Using Foil

    Using Foil

Isn't it annoying when you need to use foil, often the whole roll comes out. There’s a simple solution right there on the box, it even says: “Press Ends To Lock Roll” and that’s exactly what it does. If you look on the sides of the box, you will see the little grips, you just push them in and they hold the roll in place.

So I had an adulting fail the other day... Picked up a box of tin foil. Box was broken and I didn't notice. Foil slipped out and unspooled all over the floor. There was much unspooling 😟 *curls up with embarrassment*

FYI. There's no difference between shiny side and dull side. When manufactured, to prevent tearing, there are two reels of aluminium. Ergo, one side which goes through the rollers will be shinier than the other.

Dont forget the sharp cutting edge to make portioning the exact amount of foil you need in a straight line...lots of people dont realise this is on the box and usually just pull the whole roll out and tear into uneven pieces !

That's one of those 'only works once' clever little 'well it was a good idea' product enhancements! After the thin, weak, semi-cardboard box bends it stops working. What I did was invest in a real pair of kitchen scissors and just throw the box in the recycle bin.

    Peeling Bananas

    Peeling Bananas

Most people peel their banana from the top part, which is wrong. The best way to peel a banana is from the bottom, so you don’t squeeze the fruit. In fact, monkeys apparently figured this out a long time ago.

This is in no way the right way, as you'll get squished banana on your fingers, while your entire hand stays clean when openeing it at the top. Which therefore at least has one point supporting it being the right way, but anyway - who cares, eat any way you want.

    Loading Your Blender

    Loading Your Blender

You might be loading your blender incorrectly. Start with liquids and go from there. Add the solid components last. The motion created by the swirling liquids will suck the solid items down and keep the blades from simply tunneling through the middle of the solids.

    Rearview Mirror

    Rearview Mirror

Use the rearview mirror tab to stave off those bright lights. Next time some guy has his high beams on and blinds you through your rearview mirror, remember to press down on the tab of your rearview mirror, so it angles down. That way, the light reflects downwards without impacting your field of vision.
On manual tilt versions, a tab is used to adjust the mirror between “day” and “night” positions. In the day view position, the front surface is tilted, and the reflective back side gives a strong reflection.

But if the oil pools on the bottom, you have to shove the spoon or fork through the very resistant dried out peanut butter to get down to it. Basically, there’s really no good way to store natural peanut butter. It still separates, and the jars it comes in are never roomy enough to remix it without either making a mess, with oil shooting out the top and/or not being able to get it blended very well.

Never use a toliet plunger on a sink!!! Not just because it's been in a toliet. A toliet plunger pushes more air. The pipe to a toliet has a bigger diameter than sink. You can burst the pipe under your sink causing a lot more damage.

    Using Kitchen Sponges

    Using Kitchen Sponges

Your sponges might be making your dishes dirtier. If you’re not regularly sanitizing your sponges, you could just be wiping your dishes and counters with bacteria.

Keep your sponges away from raw meat. If you're dealing with leftovers of meat juice, use a paper towel instead. To properly sanitize your sponges, immerse them in boiling water for five minutes. Alternatively, soak a sponge in water and heat it on high in a microwave for one minute, or pop it into the dishwasher with a heated dry cycle.

A Strip Of Black Dots That Runs Along The Outside Edge Of Your Windshield

A Strip Of Black Dots That Runs Along The Outside Edge Of Your Windshield

That black strip is called a "frit" and it essentially has two purposes. It provides an etched surface for the adhesive to adhere to, which bonds the glass to the frame. And on the outside of the glass, it protects the adhesive from ultraviolet light and covers any unsightly adhesive. The dots are there just to make it look nice.

If I’m not mistaken, those dots are made of a ceramic material that helps dispersing the heat in a gradient along the borders of the glass in contact with the metal frame, so that it stops heat-related cracks (on places with high temperatures or thermal variations, it might be a thing). But, surely, this is totally unrelated to the post’s idea of the “wrong use” of something.

    zims
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I think the dots are also for heat-related reasons. Black absorbs heat, and in extreme temperatures can melt the adhesive holding the windshield in place, along with plastic and rubber. The dots help dissipate the heat around the edges of the black bands so it's not all concentrated at the edges.

Suckers Have Hollow Sticks With Holes Near The Top

Suckers Have Hollow Sticks With Holes Near The Top

The stick is hollow so that any child who accidentally swallows the stick won't choke to death. And as for the hole, it's there to hold your sucker in place. Without it, the ball-shaped candy on top would just fall right off the stick. During production, a bit of sugar paste is added into the hole, which helps keep the sucker attached to the stick.

If you do this, won't you always floss with the same bit of floss? If you wind it around your middle finger, you can unwind the unused floss from the finger and wind the used floss around your other middle finger as you go so that you are using fresh floss every couple of teeth.

You would shift to a new part of the floss circle to get fresh floss. It still works. My teeth are close together, and the floss really digs into my fingers, so this looks like a good idea for me.

    Using Dishwasher

    Using Dishwasher

There is an art to loading a dishwasher. The middle of the dishwasher gets the cleanest. The dirtiest items should be in the middle of the bottom rack facing the spray arm. That includes heavily soiled plates, pots, and pans. Keep an eye on what items you’re placing over the detergent dispenser, too – blocking it with a large item could keep the soap from being distributed correctly.

Wish they were more affordable. Here those are a luxury and we always have to do the dishes by hand. It can get messy with tiny sinks!

    Cover Up Properly

    Cover Up Properly

Many people either take the flap that is cut out in the toilet seat cover and either rip it off or position it to be in the back of the seat. Instead, the proper way to use one of these disposable covers is with the flap facing forward. This is supposed to help it more easily flush down the toilet.

That flap placed in front is to protect you from contact with whatever the person before you left in that middle space, especially from kids.

Yes!! With it facing forward it isn't even touching the water so this doesn't make sense.

huh... I always thought the middle part goes into the toilet so the water grabs it and pulls it in when you flush so you don't have to touch it. interesting.

Pretty sure they print instructions about this on every pack of these things. Of course in my experience the dispensers are always empty, so it doesn't really matter... but yes, the flap is meant to go in the water so that it automatically get sucked into the toilet when it's flushed so that you don't have to touch it.

This advice makes absolutely no senseBecause the whole thing gets flushed down the toilet anyway, and it probably comes from a female. If you have boy parts, you understand the advantage of having a barrier in the front of the toilet on the inside as well.

Thinner Bottles Leave For Colder Drinks

If you are a fan of having cold drinks, go to your sporting goods store and buy a thin bottle. You can assure yourself that with that kind bottle, you’ll always have a nice cool drink waiting to grace your lips.

Yeah, it would be nice if there was some explanation or what exactly counts as a thin bottle. The bottle in the picture looks pretty standard to me.

The bottle in the photo is made of aluminum, which conducts heat faster than glass. It will cool down quicker in the refrigerator. It will also warm up faster when removed from the fridge.

This is a weird one, as I visited Japan last year and that bottle, in the picture, is solid metal, not glass.

The drinks in a store will already be in the fridge for quite a while, since they do inventory early in the morning or late at night. Therefore, when people go there to buy a drink, all the bottles are already cold

    Measuring Tape Diamonds

    Measuring Tape Diamonds

There are tiny markings on tape measures that are there to help you find the right position for wall studs. These black diamonds are known as “stud finders,” and they can help mark the center point between two studs.

That is more common for floor trusses. Wall studs are typically 16", 19.2", or 24", so you'll have a 1/3 chance those diamonds will be accurate.

This diamond is at 19.18" or roughly 19.2" so how do we know they aren't also at 16" and 24"? I'm not familiar with the markings just asking.

The diamond marks the measurement when using five studs or rafters across a typical 8 foot sheet of plywood. 96 inches/5=19.2. Since it's an odd measurement, the diamond makes it easier than trying to measure 19.2, 38.4, 57.6, and so on. BTW: They are called "lizard piss" markings.
