Bored Panda reached out to Esther to learn more about the evolution of her comics, the comic’s name, and more.

It's been a while since we had miss.pad_thai comics featured on our page, so we asked Esther to tell us what has changed. “I think that my style has gotten more detailed and colorful over the years. I have also changed my work tool to an iPad (I started inking by hand with rotrings and paper, scanning and finishing it on the computer, while today I draw almost everything digitally). The topics have also evolved a little bit (just like my life). Before, I used to make more comics about couples because I lived with a partner, now I live on my own, and I focus more on other day-to-day things, friends, plants, hobbies... My comics are still humor-based, exploring day-to-day situations, that’s for sure,” shared Esther.

I'd rather regret not having children than regret having them. Having children you don't want now, to avoid possible future regret, seems like a really bad trade.

100% agreed, for both you and the child having them based off "maybe" and "possibly" is a risky and potentially harmful move.

I have one child, now an adult, I was mostly a single parent. I am happy with that. He turned out to be the best son a mother could ask for. I’m too old now to have more children, but if I was in a better financial situation, I would have adopted a few.

It's messed up that adoption is even expensive, legalized slavery in a sense.

Yeah... not saying regret over children is unavoidable, but you may have noticed your perspective on life has changed since you were 8 years old. Every decade, if asked the same set of life priority questions, we can expect some of the answers to change.

It's still better to regret never having had kids than it is to regret having them.

They say you'll die alone if you ajve no children... as an introvert I don't see it as that big of a problem as they do.

Kids make me nervous and uncomfortable. I gag at snot noses, baby spit up and loaded diapers. I'm a bit OCD and germophobe.

Ah, truth! You're not alone with those feelings 😉 One of my pet peeves-- mothers who think because you're female, that it's ok to suddenly shove their baby or child at you.

I love my kids but if I knew how hard it would be... I most likely would have never had kids.

I am so happy that we are entering a time when women can make the choice to not have children without the stigma? Or, being a male, am I totally wrong about this?

Without the stigma? Read the comments. And this is BP, so they're pretty mild.

My husband and I carry too many genetic issues to have kids, while living in the US. Our problems already cost way too much money, heaven help us if we had kids that'll inherit any of what we have. Not having kids so they could come into this world broke for life.

Life becomes pretty lonely after 45 if you don't have a family. Especially if you are a woman. Just saying. It's not me saying it, it's history. Money and cats? What a waste of life.

What kind of stupid nonsense is this? You never heard of friends? Spouses? What a much of misogynistic garbage. Also you accidently showed how sad your own life is with this.

So many anti-humanists in the comments section, I regret not having MORE children. Good luck finding someone to take care of you when your old!

No one is an Anti-humanist. Don't be so dramatic. It just so happens that some people aren't comfortable with having kids. Do better and stop being so rude to them

Look at how she has no one except a cat to celebrate her life. She has beautifully illustrated the tragedy of our culture! Give me a life of joy with people I love. You can keep your $32!!

A life of joy with people you love doesn't have to include children you know.

I understand that not everyone should have kids or want to have them, but please let's not so freely say negative things about kids and people who have families. That's just sad. Celebrating childfree is just weird. Celebrate your cat instead. Idk I just think it's too weird. 😐.

Will the cat and the money be at your death bed 10 to 20 years after that? Seems really lonely and sad to me.

What are with all you people who apparently the only people in your life who care about your are your children. THAT is a sad life.

People who do not want kids absolutely should not have kids. They should receive no pressure from anyone to have children. All kids deserve to be wanted by both parents. I imagine this comic is a reaction to societal pressure to have children. But like... making out being child free as this smart choice to save money and do whatever you want really makes a person seem self-absorbed. Use that time and money on charity projects that enrich our community. Everyone can and should give back. Someone made the sacrifice to raise you, someone chose to not be childless so you now exist. We all need to pay forward that selfless generosity in some way.

You can't regret what you've never experienced. Which is sad, but you guys won't realize that, you'll just snort and downvote and move on but those of us who have experienced life both ways are trying to tell you, there's growth and fulfillment there that you can't get any other way.

You have a lot of growing up to do. This comment is ignorant. Why can you not respect that some of us DO NOT WANT CHILDREN?! Love them but don't want any of my own. I am definitely not missing out on some special kind of growth or fulfillment because that is not how I am fulfilled or choose to grow.

New Funny And Relatable Comics About Everyday Interactions By Spanish Artist Esther González

miss.pad_thai Report

The name 'miss.pad_thai' is quite distinctive and intriguing. We were curious to learn the story behind the name and if it holds any special significance to Esther. She wrote: 'Miss Pad Thai' is a nickname that a hotelier gave me in Thailand while I lived there for a few months, just before moving to Barcelona. I used to eat pad thai almost every day (it's a Thai food dish) and he was very amused that I liked it so much that he named me that. Every time he saw me appear at the door of the hostel he smiled at me and called out: 'Miss Pad Thai!! Miss Pad Thai!!'. In the end, I took affection for the nickname. I chose it for the Instagram account because I didn't know what else to pick. I didn't think that it would end up becoming the name of my character, but the truth is that I'm happy that it is, and I think it fits.”

Esther also shared how she finds the balance between keeping the comics light-hearted while still depicting the ups and downs of life in a relatable manner: “I think that the way I see the world helps and also all the influences from art that I had throughout my life. I enjoy seeing the humor in everyday situations that many of us share, so I try to make comics that bring a little joy and make us laugh more at ourselves or at the face of those little day-to-day dramas.”

We were also curious to know how Esther approaches the creative process of crafting a new comic. She replied: “Firstly, I dedicate time to thinking a lot and getting ideas from experiences or from what I see or think. When something occurs to me that I think is funny, I write it down on my mobile or in a notebook. Then I draw mini sketches that help me visualize those ideas as comics, and I don't stop until I have a 'visually powerful' schematic drawing with annotations. At that point, I draw the idea in pencil in much more detail on paper, and from there, I transfer it to the iPad to ink digitally.”

Webcomics provide a unique platform for artists to reach a global audience. Therefore we asked Esther to tell us how the online community and feedback from her readers influenced her work and her growth as an illustrator.“The truth is that they influence the work a lot. For example, with their comments online they can inform the merchandise I decide to create, as even the stories I cover with my comics.

Over the years, you get to know your community (those who really value your work, especially those who have followed you from the beginning). Well, just by their reactions and interactions you end up knowing what they like, their favorite topics, what they don't like so much... In addition, they comment on each Instagram comic, and they give me their opinions and share their experiences with me, you get to know their background and be more connected to the audience directly. So in the end, almost unintentionally, they influence what you do a lot, because you want to make them happy and still have their support. Also, they have helped me improve many things over the years and to be aware of some bad ideas/comics, they have given me wise lessons, and that helps me grow as a person.

The different platforms influence how I present my comics visually. I began uploading to TikTok recently, and it’s very different. I think that creators like me need to adapt to the different social media platforms because similar to real-life experiences, the presentation influences everything too,” shared Esther.

And lastly, she added: Follow and support my work if you like it on Instagram or TikTok. Thank you.”
