The current political climate has made the relationship between the US and its European partners very tense and challenging. In an attempt to prevent misunderstandings from festering, Reddit user SprinklesNo164 asked people from the Old Continent to share the news they wish every American would know. Responses quickly poured in, highlighting a range of issues from travel to civil unrest and beyond.

Statue of Liberty with New York City skyline; iconic American landmarks in clear weather. We are currently issuing travel warnings to the US. Secretly, a lot of Europeans hope we can have less dependencies and relationships with you - and hopefully not get nuked in the process.

Canadians are heeding caution, too. Many are cancelling their trips. Some people think as long as they have their paperwork and passports in order they're guaranteed to be okay. But from the USA's repeated refusal of due process and just making those denied entry to go back home, and some of those denials are based on errors or minor thing, there is no guarantee and if you're kidnapped and sent to the concentration camps, you may not get out for weeks or months. It's not worth the risk.

I'm American and I'd absolutely urge people to not visit during the Trump administration. Just don't. People have been detained and removed with NO due process, and without loved ones being able to contact them or find out where they are. People with valid green cards and legal reasons to be here, are being detained and removed. It's egregious, immoral and unacceptable!

My country has not yet issued an official warning, but travel agencies and airlines have seen an increase in cancelled trips to the US. My boyfriend and I have also decided to cancel our September trip to NY. We planned it as a celebration of my birthday, but we don't trust the US.

They are. And adding to that, the English to Russian translators suck. A "-" can be crucial during political or economic discussions. When they were negotiating with the Russians, the US guys did not pay attention to the "-", so the Russians are of the opinion that not all civilian areas are banned from being bombed. On top of that, Russia and US have a different understanding of what an agreement or a deal is. For Russia it is not binding at all.

Neither, apparently, is it for Trump. If he wants some of those tariffs he is enamoured with, a stroke of a pen and instant economic harm with no regard for existing trade agreements, including those he himself set up during his first presidency.

We enjoyed a peaceful relationship with Russia after the Cold War, but then Putin invaded Ukraine and the outpouring of support for Ukraine was overwhelming and massive. But Trump's love of Putin, and his disrespect of President Zelenskyy has seemed to capture the attention of some of his supporters. Constant right wing propaganda is being used to try and convince conservatives that Europe is too reliant on US money and military support. I'd like to stress that a great many of us aren't falling for it, and see it for what it really is.

In the American Great Lakes area (think Chicago on Lake Michigan) we are having False Spring. That happens when the warmer weather shows up for a day or two, tricking you into thinking spring has arrived, only to be followed by snow and ice and single digit temps two days later. The problem in Hungary is imagine New York thrown into Maine and then make it work as a country. In Hungary, there are approximately 2,900 villages, 2,000 small towns, and 23 cities. This gives a rough ratio of about 1.45 villages per small town and about 0.09 small towns per city. Most university educated people live in the Capital. Barely any independent media left and since only about 34% of the population speaks a second language, it's not possible for them to fact check.

The US is a huge succcess largely because it's no longer run on white male supremacy. MAGA is a dishonest political slogan designed to appeal to the very worst in society. It implies all sorts of things - such as the supposed reason America's supposedly no longer great (which is a lie) is that it's no longer being run by and for white men (which is a racist, sexist lie). In Trump's second term, his officials have started saying the implied bit out loud:. "Competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work." https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-darren-beattie-state-department/.

It amazes me that the Tangerine Toddler and his cohorts do not realise how inflicting these huge tariffs will affect the USA residents. After all, it's the importing country that pays the tariffs back to the exporting country. Trying to make imported goods more expensive so more 'home made and home grown' products are purchased only works if that country can meet their own demand.

Protesters with raised fists and a man shouting, emphasizing European news and events. Serbia has been protesting for more than 4 months now after roof of railway station in Novi Sad collapsed on 1st of November, k**ling 16 people. Students barricaded universities around the country and unis haven't been working for all this time. They also have been walking for miles and miles to protests in different cities in order to spread the word and connect to people. They won't stop until their demands for justice and systems changes are met.

Professors and school teachers that support them stopped getting paid. Government used acoustic sound weapon on protesters a week ago, but continues to deny that.

Direct democracy is on the rise among people, but dictatorship is on the rise in the government.

Additionally, our neighbours (North Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, and bit further, Georgia) also had their mass protests against s**t autocratic and corrupt governments. Serbia stands with them, you can frequently see Greek and Macedonian signs on protests these days.

We have a drought? Badgers are undermining the railways and because they are a protected species, updating the railways is becoming an administrative and legal hassle, leading to disruptions in train traffic which leads to a lot of complaints of people using trains leading to people preferring their cars instead, which is not what we want because of the pollution.

Yes, the weather is currently "out of service". When there is very heavy rain the tunnel under the driveway can't cope and water pours across in a way that is quite impressive to look at (but it's only about ankle deep). This has happened eight times since moving here in 2002, *six* of those times in the past *nine* months. The farmers used to complain about the water table and how they couldn't irritate the maize. Now they're planting sunflowers because it's too wet for maize. Oh, and a thunderstorm washed away half a field of what. The very next day a bigger thunderstorm took out the rest (and wrecked roads, bridges, homes...) and we're not even a flood risk. Well, not until last year. The poor people in Messac/Guipry (low lying by a river) got it over and over and over since last summer. What the actual fark?!?

If you are a friend that can be counted on, a lot of s****y actions are forgiven. If you start acting hostile, be prepared for the echo. The reason why other countries sell more to the US than vice versa is simple: The US wants cheap and quality, so they outsourced whatever they could. And for gods sake, almost every country in the world adapted the voting systems, type of government, basic laws and rules, care and education for their citizens during the past 250 years. Not every experiment resulted in an improvement, but some countries e.g. in Europe achieved a pretty fair standard of justice, voice of the citizens in government (multi-party system) and living quality. But the US still get stuck with laws and a voting system from when post delivery by horse was an achievement.

It's ridiculous how disjointed and so not united we are. The country is not even safe for for it's own citizens. Just pick an issue, any issue, and it's somehow it will backfire and cause countless casualties for the American people. Also you smug bastards over in Europe are getting on my nerves continually harping on geography. Pick up a d**n newspaper once in awhile, and you'll find something new everyday to taunt us for. For pete's sake somehow we have made the likes of "The Island Boys" famous, we people on Tik-Tok who don't even know what quarters are, how to get them or even use a coin-op laundromat. We have social media and influencers revealing new depths of stupidity everyday, and just when you didn't think it was possible to get more stupid.... they up the ante. it's truly a Duh-mockracy. And I deplore their behaviour too (the site I mean, not individual Pandas). You may say, then why do I click in posts that trash the US. Because we need to be the antidote to rage bait. Waging war on these pages is not the way. Occasionally winding up our "cousins" is one thing, but it's not in fun anymore, and the attacks need to stop. Knee jerk comments about grammar, guns, food, and yes, geography are not helping, and they're not even funny.

European Union flag waving against a clear blue sky. There is now an €840 Billion plan underway to rearm Europe. Effectively making it a superpower and bringing the era of American dominance to an end.

Edit: Lots of comments on this. Sorry I have no interest in arguing on the Internet, I won't reply. Let me clarify my position: this is a terrible thing that's happening. If you are working class you'll be the one f****d in the upcoming wars. Trump is stupid for squandering American power in Europe but he seems to be doing it in advance of grabbing mineral rich territories for resources big tech companies need. All the bourgeois powers will be doing some version of this soon because capital needs to constantly expand or collapse.

I'd just like to remind everyone that the last time European nations rushed to re-arm (about 90 years back), the outcome wasn't pretty 😬. On the other hand, this time round France, Germany, Poland, and the UK are definitely all the same side. 🤨 (The good news really is that France, Germany, Poland, and the UK are all on the same side - realistically, if those four nations actually got their act together and formed some sort of mutual defence pact outside NATO, that'd most likely ensure Europe's security all by itself. Check out history. Europe's had an awful lot of wars and those four countries are all countries which have a long history of being really quite awkward from the point of view of anyone trying to oppose them militarily)

Europe needs to do whatever is necessary to ensure its own security. America is no longer helping anyone other than itself. Putin is a serious threat and he will not behave. NATO might still reinvent itself, but as long as Trump is in Washington, Europe and the rest of the world must look to themselves for security. As an expat American living in Asia, I can only hope that Trump does not try to invade Greenland, Canada, or anywhere else.... if it does happen, many Americans will refuse to do it, I believe. We know that Trump and Musk are wrong; they are the worst of humanity along with others like them...

But the only time NATO's self-defence article has been called on was by the US, and all its NATO allies heeded that call - in Afghanistan. So we know for sure that the NATO allies of the US will help out the US when it makes that call. Problem: Trump has let it know that the US will not help out its NATO allies if they call for help. Meanwhile: the UK has long maintained the European arm of NATO's nuclear deterrent (France has it own outside NATO control). I don't see any nation threatening that. And finally; Europe would love to control NATO, only the US refuses to give up its prime position.

Person sorting canned goods in a box, highlighting a news story Europeans might share. There is a pre-war atmosphere in Europe. Last October, Sweden distributed a brochure to prepare its citizens for an imminent threat. Now, this summer, the French will receive a survival manual at home to know how to act in case of a national emergency or an “imminent threat”. In addition, news came out today that Brussels is calling for European households to stockpile emergency supplies in case of a climate crisis or war.

“Europe must prepare for a potential war, also for cyber-attacks, pandemics and the terrible effects of the climate crisis, warns the European Commission.... Brussels is calling for all European households to have stocks of water, medicines, batteries and food to subsist for 72 hours without outside help in the event of a crisis. It is one of the guidelines of the Union's Preparedness Strategy, which will be presented by the Community Executive on Wednesday”.

I have a worry. Here in France they're trying hard to push electric as "the best way". Cooking, heating, cars... Reduce the nasty nasty carbon releasing fossil fuels, don't use wood (particulate matter), electricity for the win, etc. Excuse me, isn't that a kind of "all the eggs in one basket" situation? Surely one of the first things any competent invader would do is take down the infrastructure - phones, mobiles, internet, and the stuff that powers it all.

As a Gen X Brit who grew up in NW London, my pre-war attitude remains as it always was: if another big war happens, don't even bother trying, the situation's hopeless. I grew up knowing from quite a young age that if WW3 did break out, my best hope was that the initial attack would vaporise me. There were too many obvious targets near home (no, really, there really were quite a lot) for there to be any realistic chance of surviving and a quick death beats radiation sickness. 😁

Yep, same here. I'm about to arrange for my family to be able to survive for at least 72 hours in case of a power outage, a flood or something worse. If something worse, I hope they will bomb my house so that I will be killed outright: those who survive are, in today's warfare, far worse off. Also, you have better chances of survival in the Army than being a civilian. So, there's a very long list that I need to complete. Does anyone have any recommendations when it comes to dried meals?

    Rick Murray
    Community Member

Get things you already eat (and if you don't then start introducing them into your diet). I have, for example, plenty of tinned spaghetti. Sometimes when I'm lazy I'll eat it cold right out of the can. The reason for this is because you'll be under a lot of stress if you need to haul up and live off your emergency stash. Whether it's Russians or zombies or a flood, it's going to be stressful. The last thing you need is to start screwing with your digestion by eating weird and unknown things. Oh, and you said dried meals. How do you plan to undryify them? Bottled water? Have you accounted for bottled water for bathing, washing, and such as well? Personally I would just maintain a larger than usual selection of tinned stuff (which will come out ready to eat, and often can be tolerated cold if the resources to heat it up are in short supply). And, yes, if I get word that the bomb is going to drop nearby, I'll climb on the roof for a good view. The aftermath will be awful, count me out.

The climate and geography in the US is always trying to k**l us off. Tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, fires, earthquakes, blizzards, and drought. I've always kept weeks of food and water on hand in the event of natural disaster. Best recommendation, buy canned and boxed goods that you always use and rotate through them to make sure your emergency supplies don't expire. Just make sure to keep a large enough reserve in case food deliveries are suspended. Most major cities are three days away from running out of food. Have bottled water but also some big empty jugs you can fill if you are expecting a disruption to the water supply, you can use these for washing. Get some type of weapon for your home, even a cricket bat or a wrecking bar if there are limits on weapon ownership in your country. People will do terrible things when their children are starving.

Oh, it would have been totally necessary to relax that no-debt-thing (or to never impleent it) to invest in education, social systems, infrastructure and measures against climate change. But none of that ever seemed important enough to the richt people's representatives in the government.

Based on 2023 number, the US spent 9.06% of its budget on defense. Poland - 8.12%, UK - 5.15%, Denmark - 4.1%, Norway - 4%, France 3.57%, Netherlands - 3.39%, Germany - 3.08%, Italy - 3.04%, Switzerland - 2.2%. Sorry, folks, but the US simply can't afford what we're spending on a lot of things right now. Haven't for years.

Children in colorful attire and backpacks walk in line, symbolizing European news stories Americans might not know. Norway. The biggest *local* news event is that a kindergarten went on a ski trip and had a great time. Erik says he fell once but it didn't hurt and he had an orange in his backpack that didn't take any damage.

A big national news event is that they found even more proof of sexual a***e of patients at a gross doctor's house.

Trump is a wannbe dictator. His only goal in life is to win all the time. A true,, classic textbook narcissist. Trump sees Russia as winning the war but the USA wasn't endorsing Russia's side, and Trump is pissed that the USA has been supporting the losing side. He doesn't care what each country represents, their history and injustices. He doesn't care who started the war. He also sees that Russia invaded for valuable resources that Trump wants. It's insidious greed.

Also the US (I mean the current power structure and their followers) vastly underestimates Europe (the continent, the Union, and the different countries that compose those). Trump has done a lot that draws parallels to dictators: They can't teach about slavery apparently, similar to a lot of dictator places; he apparently wants to annex Canada, similar to his buddy Putin who is at war with his (geographically) closest country. He also removed a lot of rights and has his own propaganda station (looking at you 🦊📰) similar to most dictators

Somebody like Musk would never get the political power in Europe. It is illegal and prevented by laws which are the result of our experience with several dictators, crowned or self-declared. The multi-party political government helps preventing one person grabbing all power. But the the power of the US president is based on the reigning systems from 250 years ago. The creators had no experience with democracy, so they based the power of the leader on what they knew: Kings. And never changed it, while Europe evolved.

We're about to have an election in the next month where it is literally a Republican vs Democrat election round 2: Electric Boogaloo. Our conservative (called the Liberal) party has started to spit Trumpist lines in his press conferences and our liberal/left (called Labor with no u) party is running a bump in healthcare funding.

The polls are so tight there is a massive chance of a hung parliament because of independents and the greens.

Well, Australians have had a chance to see in real-time what happens when you vote in a f*****t government like Trump's. Hopefully, that will mean a landslide victory for the other party. No one in his/her right mind would vote for the debacle that is happening in the USA!

Person at a desk, using a smartphone and computer, illustrating European news stories not widely known in America. I'm from a small town in England, according to the local Facebook group:

    * Immigrants are ruining the town, or not ruining the town, nobody is really sure at this point. They're definitely up to something.

    * Nigel Farange is either the devil or going to save the UK. Nobody can agree on that.

    * The bypass they have been promising for 80 years hasn't been built yet, people are salty about that

    * Some drama about a Primary school not having an Easter service this year.

    Exciting stuff.

Weird comment. I’m fairly sure all of us would struggle to keep just our rear ends dry in a pool, water being wet and all. I suppose it made sense in your head but you should see the logical fallacy once you wrote it out. Now, if you wrote “he couldn’t find his ārse with both hands and a mirror” …

Grifter Farage is the devil. He has reportedly said that the UK should accept US chlorinated washed chicken and the leave it up to people to decide. Nobody apart from him wants that in the uk. But then he does sniff Trump’s backside.

Well… it’s sort of like this with plants. You research a bit, or look at the plant’s characteristics, place it somewhere, then adjust if the plant reacts badly. Remembering there’s an acclimation period if the plant was in a greenhouse. You water it wherever the soul is dry, and that can vary accordingly to climate, sun exposure size of pot etc.

Dilapidated house in a European landscape, highlighting unique news stories unfamiliar to many Americans. Another Pulse Nightclub tragedy that didn’t reach most American news outlets. On March 16th 2025, a fire at a DNK concert k**led at least 59 people (including the entire band except for one dude). It was caused by pyrotechnics. It is the deadliest nightclub fire in Europe since the 2015 Bucharest nightclub fire, and the deadliest fire in North Macedonia’s history. Super tragic. source

Edit: For the record I’m not European. I saw it on Wikipedia’s home page and was confused because it said Pulse Nightclub.. yet it was super recent and in Macedonia. I ended up listening to some DNK songs. They were super talented and it’s f*****g tragic. RIP.

We have statues of Paddington Bear around the country on benches in city centres and people like to sit next to him and get a photograph. He's only hollow fibreglass or similar. The two nitwits got drunk and decided to steal him from a bench but couldn't remove him so they cut the front off and took it back to their barracks. TBH, it's not particularly bad I think it was just a relief to have some news that was of a 'bad' thing but not unbelievably traumatic.

MPs get a payrise and we, the disabled, get screwed. The PIP points system is so unfair. Not only that but it's hard to grasp some of the questions. Then there's the interviews. I was supposed to have a video phone call interview. I set it all up with my phone provider. They said to accept the call, don't worry about going over your data limit. We'll keep you connected and should you go over it? We'll work something out where you can pay a little extra each month so it's not one big huge bill if needed... And yes, you can still access FB, email etc In the end? It was a Phone Call. ... A. Phone. Call. I could've been anyone! But had it been a video call? I could've shown them my raised/adapted toilet seat with the frame, my shower stool and handrail. My crutches and calipers. My old crutches, my cane for inside if/when I need it. But nope... It was a phone call. Then they have the audacity to say that I "Did Not Provide Enough Proof Of Disability"!!!

I had well over a £150 taken from my disability PIP payments per fortnight. And now? PIP is Disability Allowance and ESA is changing to Universal Credit. I've had to put in for Crisis Loans from the DWP due to my caliper breaking. It snapped just above the slot where it goes into the shoe. It was an emergency appointment at the physiotherapy hospital and I had to get a taxi...... There a WHOLE lot more to that part with my calipers but there's definitely a LOT of anger and people/official disability groups are coming together to oppose these new cuts. We need this money to Live. Eat. Attend necessary appointments at our various hospitals. £15-20 per two days doesn't cut it. If I've to get a taxi because my caliper broke, which it did, then what am I supposed to eat after? Air? Sit in the dark due to my electricity being cut off because it's a choice of pay for food and my mobile phone bill or electricity? Can't fricken phone anywhere for help if I've not got a phone can I?

Soldiers in camo uniforms line up, highlighting European military news unfamiliar to Americans. The Netherlands (a small country (18 mio.) west of Germany) quickly wants to increase its army from 75.000 people to 200.000 people. They accept anyone now, so they claim.

Europeans have a matter of fact approach to war, apparently. I can’t imagine behaving the same way. I can’t conceptualize living through a war. I think I would run away. I hope I could do so. I don’t care about defending my country or anything. I would take my family, and try to keep them safe. Every war I’ve studied in school is too horrific for my mind to handle. I can’t do that.

The problem with the idea of running away from war is that the war will catch up with you. Europeans who know a little history know this. My grandfathers volunteered to fight. Their wives and children back at home weren't safe because the enemy brought the war to them - a small matter of Germany bombing the UK, and nothing remotely as bad as what happened with the ground war. Europeans know that if there's a big war, you can't keep yourself or your family safe by running away.

The leader of the Serb-dominant region of Bosnia is defying arrest, breaking the constitution and threatening to raise an army. He's a separatist. The arrest warrant for him hasn't been filled because local police from his region would likely protect him. He's also been sentenced to jail and banned from politics, but he's still there. It's very complicated and not easy to explain quickly so I think it's been way underreported, even in Europe.

Union Jack flag waving against a clear blue sky, representing European news stories. Similar to the US a whole ton of cuts are being made in the UK right now and it's causing a similar backlash. The people who will be most harmed are those who are most vulnerable, it is seen by many to be justifiable given the current circumstances of the war but I'd prefer we just hit the Americans with retaliatory tarrifs to pay for it instead.

My bf is British. He's told me they are cutting off benefits to disabled people to make them work. He's a carer for his severely disabled, ailing parents, and is very worried what's going to happen. I've heard of how their benefits system gives their own assessments of disabled people, through invasive, upsetting tests to figure out what they are capable of. I've been trying to reassure him that it's highly unlikely he and his parents would be affected. But I'm not fully confident of that.

If they had said they were going to review the system and see where savings could be made, that wouldn't be a bad thing. But they have said they will be making savings, so some people will suffer. They are going after the vulnerable, because it's easier. I'd like to add reassurance to your bf, but I honestly don't know.

Neo-conservatives believe that a government is hobbled by caring for its disabled and poor. They instead still believe the economic theories that emphasize the importance of the wealthy class investing in making more wealth. It is all bullsh*t but they believe the ordinary people are not worth the investment. Just like beliefs of the Trump administration... we are devolving throughout the world....😰

The Situation: ICA, Sweden's largest grocery store chain, is boycotting Coca-Cola products, specifically the 1.5-liter bottles of Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Sprite. The Reason: The disagreement stems from a price disagreement, with ICA wanting Coca-Cola to lower the price of the fizzy drinks. ICA's Perspective: Staffan Ekengren at ICA calls the measure "unusual" but necessary to address the price issue.

In France, the prime minister has lied about his knowledge and cover up of a violence scandal at a private catholic school, so the government is currently distracting the population by banning islamic veils from sports competitions. Manchester has now taken over as the centre of a lot of government departments and for jobs in London, unless you actually work in that building already, you're not eligible to apply. Clear plastic water bottle with a blue cap, representing news in Europe unfamiliar to Americans. There is going to be a new twist-off plastic bottle cap.

It's designed so you pull the cap over to the other side to keep it out of the way. People just aren't using them properly

Undo the lid, pour or drink a little, then yank the lid. It will come away from the collar and can then be treated like a normal lid like we used to have before the nanny state decided we couldn't be trusted with lids.

You can push the cap back far enough to be able to drink, but I personally find it a nightmare trying to then put the lid back on. Not sure who has not been putting the lids in the recycling to make this addition necessary. V annoying!

I've been through all the stages: confusion, being poked in the face, thinking I am too stupid to open a bottle, resignation, acceptance. Been to the US and was actively missing these bottle caps 😅 I've lost an embarrassingly number of caps then

Appreciate this may be a first world problem, but if you don't snap them off the lid spins round the bottle and spills your tonic. Snap them off every time.

I loved it, until the elimination rounds were invented. The main show does not have all the fun, crazy, quirky, idiotic, unique bands anymore.

If all entrants were in the final it would be about 5 hours long - the ones that get eliminated are pretty bad for the most part, but I take your point. There still seem to be a fair number weird and wacky entries in the final though. I'm still pissed that 'Cha CHa Cha' lost to that boring Loreen dirge...

Somewhat disappointing that we (UK) had a decent song for the first time in 25 years and Ukraine won it due to a sympathy vote. Ah well.

Could never understand why Australia was invited to join the European Song Contest. Perhaps it was the perennial confusion of Australia/Austria :o) But what excuse is there for having a Middle Eastern country included - makes no sense

Don't mind me laughing at San Marino going with Gabri Ponte, an italian dj who competes with the song "Tutta l'Italia" aka "All of Italy". For those who don't know, San Marino is a small state geographically located in Italy but independent, so i find the whole thing very amusing.

Norway is selling a lot of teslas again.

To put it in perspective: Owners of Teslas are selling, not Tesla itself. Just like everyone else in Europe. The lease contracts are running out, and the used ones are flooding the second hand market, which in itself caused the prices to drop, but now no one wants neither a new Tesla, nor a second hand. This means that the value of a second hand has dropped in a few months by more than half. And still nobody buys one. While for some reason the price of a new one has already dropped (before Elon lost his cool) by nearly 10%, lease rates have gone UP by 10%

Who in their right mind would buy one now? They are just inviting vandalism. Those cars are pariahs now.

Here in the US people are selling there Teslas also. I don't know about Norway or any place else but there has been vandalism against people who own Teslas also. I belive there has been at least one vandalism act against a Tesla dealership.
