“So Much Ignorance”: Hunter Schafer’s Passport Labels Her As Male After Latest Policy Changes

Transgender actress Hunter Schafer has made it clear she won’t let a letter change any form of her self-expression.

Recently, the Euphoria star posted a video on social media where she showed a picture of her passport along with the label ‘male’, detailed as just the letter M, in the category of sex.

She then later called out the newest presidential  administration for the recent controversial executive order that targets trans audiences.

Highlights
  • Hunter Schafer posted a video showing that her passport lists her as male.
  • Schafer criticizes the executive orders targeting trans people.
  • Many users supported Schafer, emphasizing that trans people are here to stay.

“I want to acknowledge my privilege, not only as a celebrity transwoman who is white and thin and can adhere to contemporary beauty standards and I can participate in all of that, and I pass, and it still happened,” Schafer, 26, said.

“I never had my birth certificate changed, so this has led me to believe that I think the agencies who were interested in passports are now required to cross reference birth certificates.

“I don’t know exactly what, or what changed in far of the processing goes.”

She shared that it’s been about a decade since she changed her “gender marker” and this was the first time an official administration didn’t acknowledge that.

At the end of the day, however, Schafer shared her pride in being a transgender woman and emphasized that a symbol on her passport will not change that.

“I also want to say, I don’t give a f–ck that they put a M on my passport,” she reiterated. “It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness, however it does make life a little harder.

“Personally, I mean I haven’t tested it out yet, I’ll found out next week when I have to travel abroad with my passport, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to come along with having to out myself to like border patrol agents and that whole gig much more often that I would like to or is really necessary.”

Schafer has never been shy in sharing how proud she is to be a trans woman

Schafer said she was thinking of other trans women who may be experiencing the same thing, claiming that these sorts of “intricacies” brought along an unnecessary “difficulty” that tends to bleed into “real life sh–t.”

The actress still stands firm on her belief: “Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing, I am never going to stop being trans, a letter on a passport can’t change that.”

The 26-year-old then threw out a verbal middle finger to those responsible.

“I don’t really have an answer on what to do about this, but I feel it was important to share. This is real. So, um yeah, f–ck.”

People of both sides chimed in, either to rally in support or slam Schafer for her claim.

“Your passport is supposed to list your sex, not what you pretend to be,” read the top comment.

“It doesn’t matter when you change your gender, because it’s ‘at birth.’ So even if you change it a decade ago or three you still were a male at birth so that’s why you have M in your passport,” a second stated. “And that’s not because of the new administration but because of history, biology, evolution, and common sense.”

Another wrote, “That’s weird. Maybe it’s because you’re a man? You don’t get to force your delusion on everybody. This culture is disappointing.”

Many comments, however, were not supportive of her video

A few others, however, rushed to the actress’s defense.

“Why are y’all so bothered by how someone chooses to identify… ignorant AF… acting like it causes you physical pain or something,” one person pointed out.

Someone else echoed, “So much hate and ignorance about how others choose to live. It literally has ZERO affect [sic] on your life. Sounds like you guys are the real snowflakes here.”

“My heart goes out to all trans people… this change is pointless… trans people will always be visible in this world no matter what,” a third emphasized.

One user wrote, “I don’t understand why people care so much about another person gender, how does that affect your daily life? Hunter, we love and support you.”

President Trump’s administrative order specifically targets trans people

A post shared by Hunter (@hunterschafer)

President Donald Trump has signed four executive orders that pertain to transgender people since he went into office in January.

He said the government will only recognize two sexes from now on, male and female, and that “sexes are not changeable.”

Additionally, he restricted “gender-affirming care” for those under 19 years old, which can include hormone treatment and surgeries.

“This is uncalled for and heartbreaking,” read one comment

A trans person's ability to live freely in their new gender and have it officially recognized has absolutely zero effect on any else's life but a massive difference on their own life.

i'm on the trans spectrum (nonbinary) and I get constantly reminded of what I was born as. even if it's a letter on a small piece of paper to travel, it still hurts. I doubt that nonbino folks will ever be fully validated and respected in any community. I didn't want to be born this way. I can't choose a bathroom to walk into or a locker room to change. be empathetic.

Men don't need to pretend to be trans to assault women. Men don't need to go through all the hassle, abuse, and mistreatment trans people receive, just so they can assault women. Men already have the power and ability to assault women. Blaming trans people, and specifically trans women, for the actions of predatory men is the very definition of prejudice.

"Maybe they shouldn't be allowed to walk around with their d!ck hard and naked in the locker room?" Link one reputable news article to prove your claim. Additionally, you seem rather obsessed with people's genitalia, perhaps you feel insecure in your own identity/body and wish to downgrade other's experience of life.

To Lola July- I read your multiple comments in this thread. You are a very bitter, resentful, judgmental, narrow minded and ignorant person. You are so concerned about your rights, but have no concern at all for the rights of others. The arguments you make are as weak as wet toilet paper. I’ll bet you hide behind cherry picked parts of the Bible, as you seem so very self righteous. I feel very sorry for you, but even more sorry for those that have to be around you.

Is SNP the Scottish National Party? Regardless, if what you're saying is true, then that's completely bonkers, of course. What Lola July is referring to is this whole conspiracy that trumpers came up with, blaming teachers all over the country about "grooming" children with regard to gender identity. Which is complete bull$hit.

Honestly this whole debacle is proving without a doubt how petty the "sex is gender" narrative really is. All these executive orders do is hurt marginalized people and do absolutely nothing beneficial or detrimental to the majority. It's just another form of targeting minorities, based off of a marker on a birth certificate and/or genitals at birth. It's just as vile as laws passed based on the color of one's skin. Just as uncontrollable, just as irrelevant to who or what a person is. And funnily enough, the exact same arguments are used with each group to justify it, you just have to swap the key terms, Mad Libs-style, to see it in action.

These particular executive orders are simply meant to pander to his intellectually limited base. They can celebrate him "putting the gays in their place" so they won't pay close attention to the fact that he's caused tens of thousands of people to lose their jobs, or that he's courting a dictator, or any number of other idiotic things. But you're right...it causes harm to an already marginalized group, while adding nothing of real value to anyone else. It's a net negative, much like the man himself.

Just been reading about this on a more reputable news site. US Passports allowed 3 sexes on passports - F, M and X. Trump has now removed the X by Executive Order, NOT by a change in law going through the House.

Well, since that is a combination of both male and female reproductive organs, I would imagine a hermaphrodite should be free to choose which sex they want to be listed as since they qualify as either.

same thing they did before April 2022, the first time a third option was ever offered (though technically an intersex person got it back in 2021 after a lawsuit, that was overturned but allowed to keep it). I mean I feel bad for them, but the same thing they did before 2022.

And this, Lola July, is exactly the sort of comment I'd expect from a stupid trumper. Poor you, being bullied by people who want to live as genuinely as they can, without prejudice. Here's a fact for you: about 1 in 1,000-2,000 people are born intersex, with aspects of both male and female genitalia and/or have combinations of both male and female chromosomes. That's science, b***h.

The proportion varies, depending on the definition. I just read: "Applying this more precise definition, the true prevalence of intersex is seen to be about 0.018%, almost 100 times lower than Fausto-Sterling s estimate of 1.7%." 1.7% would be higher than current estimates for trans people.

It's to identify you and confirm that you are who you say you are in the passport. If we're going to have passports at all, then they need to contain all distinguishing information.

Gender affirming procedures have come a long way. Trans men look like cis men. Trans women look like cis women. It renders the gender marker useless. Also there are women that look manly and vice versa. And if a person born a man has surgery and receives female genitalia, what is the purpose of the M on her passport? This is just a really dumb hill to die on.

Exactly. If the bearer of the ID doesn’t resemble the “sex” indicator on the ID, then what good is it? Should the person seeing the ID raise alarm bells because a passport says “M” but the person proffering it looks very much like a “F”? How does having a marker that appears to be incorrect help anyone who’s trying to deter criminals? Seems to me that for the purposes of identifying criminals, it’d be *much* more useful to have an indicator that matches reality! I’m imagining a trans woman going through passport control with a passport indicating she’s a “M,” her name matches that of a terrorist they’re watching for, she runs, and passport control alerts security to look for a male. She runs past ‘em all and gets away because they’re looking for a male! I’m beginning to think that the ONLY reason for this dumb rule is to humiliate, inconvenience, and ultimately hurt trans people, as I can’t see what’s gained by mislabeling them. 😞

I get what you're saying, but this woman looks completely feminine, so having an M on her passport makes everything just confusing and makes her appear to NOT be who she says, and having an F would be more likely to confirm that it is in fact her passport and she is who she says. So I don't know, I think a birth sex marker just makes it harder to tell whether someone is who they say they are, not easier. Also, there's lots of other stuff that isn't on your passport, like the size of your feet or nose, you could use those to distinguish whether you are who you say you are, but we choose not to include those.

Except US Passports have no such thing as Gender on them, it says "sex" which refers to the biological status (https://medicine.yale.edu/news-article/what-do-we-mean-by-sex-and-gender/). So this is legally correct. Some state use gender but not sex for ID, but all federal documents use Sex, the biological status. To know the difference, see the article from Yale I posted about the difference between sex and gender

Good luck for the cops to find this "male" person if they need to arrest her. As far as I know, only doctors ever actually checked your genitals. Beside being blind to real medical issues, putting a gender that doesn't reflect the person on an ID just confuses the agents that actually check your ID. The only people who should know what's your genetic / birth gender are doctors.

Which changing room would you suggest that someone like Hunter uses? She has clearly undergone hormone treatment and some sex reassignment procedures and she looks like millions of other women. Do you not think she would be in more danger herself if she were to go into a men's changing room than she would pose to women if were to use a women's changing room?

Why does a passport need to show someone's gender? Seems pretty pointless to me. But if there IS a use for it, it would be to see if the person looks like the gender that is written there. And a transwoman is gonna present as a woman, so it makes more sense to have an F in there than an M. Because the only way for someone like a TSA agent to check if she was born with a male body is by either checking her genitalia if she hasn't had bottom surgery (and thankfully they don't just get to check everyone's genitalia), or by checking her chromosomes if she has had bottom surgery (which is not a practical possibility). So it's completely useless to have your birth sex in your passport if you've transitioned.

They aren't trying to erase them completely. If trans people were completely erased, they wouldn't be available as a distraction anymore. They're going to keep the existence of trans people in the public's minds for as long as they can to use them to scare people into voting against their own interests.

It may be because your comment made no sense. Of course airport security aren't going to check your gender if your physical appearance matches the gender on your ID. But if there is a mismatch between the gender on your ID and your physical appearance then it is much more likely that ignorant and unsympathetic airport security (which is the majority of them, that job just seems to attract ar*eholes) will insist on checking what their biological sex is.

Why does Randy Treibel have the "right" to know Hunter's sex? Is he trolling for prostitutes and he'd be embarrassed to solicit a trans person?

Why do you actually need the entry? Is it to prevent misuse of the ID card - then it should rather contain what I can compare with as an inspector. So “rather” the appearance. With today's disguise options, it doesn't make sense either. So maybe - in the event of a *cough* search, not rather the “existing” gender for comparison with the ID? Off the top of my head, I would say that the entry has become irrelevant, right?

Does anyone else notice all the attacks in the United States are against MTF Trans folks? It's just a political scare tactic. If it wasn't, then they would be banning all Trans folks from sports, not just the Trans-Women. And folks who support attacks on Trans folks are just small-minded bigots who love to hate.

All I can say is thank goodness that people are no longer banned from BP due to 10 downvotes. This is still a very divisive issue, and I suspect it will be decades, if not longer, before it settles down. After all, homosexual acts in the UK were illegal for 430 years, so I suspect this will rumble on. Please try to communicate calmly, I'd rather not read a lot of personal or political insults.

it is a man, the license is correct. He has male DNA, he has a male skeleton, He probably still has a pair of nuts, producing testosterone. When he dies, in 100 years if they dug his skeleton up and did a DNA test, what would it say? Male. Should a trans "women" who still has a penis and a pair of nuts be allowed into a female toilet? NO, i am not so why should they? If i put a dress on and identify as a women, is it ok for me to go into a female toilet with young girls in there? NO. the world has turned into a freaky sick and f****d up place.

I think the best way to make the people doing this angry is to not just care, and continue doing what you do. Don't let hater get into your head. Show them you don't care and they can't change you. That's what LGBTQ always did, they didn't let other tell them who they were, and go on with their live. Conservative always wanted to "own the libs" and make other angry. Don't give them what they want and just ignore them. Who cares what they think, other people will see you for who you are.

From what I understand, her former passports did show her gender correctly, and now for her newest passport they have changed it back to her birth sex. And that's in line with what Trump was saying he's going to do, so it's very unlikely to be a mistake.

She isn't simply "ranting" without "bothering" to get it changed. Your data from 2024 is from before the current administration, but the passport policy changed in January. This is not just a state thing, but a change that impacts all Americans. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/passport-help/sex-marker.html

Look at the pictures on the article, do you really think that this person is a man just because she still has a penis? She's been transitioning since she was a teenager and went through puberty with female sex hormones, her body is practically cis at this point. Not saying that trans women who don't pass aren't valid, but even that statement might be too radical for some of you.

From what I understand she didn't use to need to change her birth certificate, because she already changed her gender marker and her earlier passports based their information on that and DID show an F. And the new passport undid that, and changed it back to M. That's how I understand it at least.

They oversimplify it for 3rd graders so that their little heads can understand it, but it's not true that all men have XY and all women XX. Some people don't even have XY or XX, some have X, XXY, XXXY or they have different sets throughout their body (for instance when part of the body has XY and part has XXY). Then there's men who are born with XX chromosomes but a male looking body with male body parts. They're not trans, they're just naturally born like that. And women with XY chromosomes who naturally have a female looking body with female body parts. Whether someone is female or male is not based on genotype but on phenotype, THAT is a biological fact. So maybe don't stop at 3rd grade but level but keep learning until you understand the complexities of it. Because assuming that human biology is as simple as we were taught in 3rd grade, is like saying that people are never born blind, because in 3rd grade our teachers said that "humans can see with their eyes but moles can't".

Yes, that's 3rd grade biology because it's oversimplified. XX = female, XY = male is the basic version of things, but a lot of mutations can happen and make someone with XX match a male phenotype and XY a female one. They will never look or feel like their presumed genetic gender.

@Charbadar: If you travel to a different country, how are they gonna check whether someone is biologically male? Are they going to look at every woman naked to see whether she has a vagina? And whether she has any surgery scars in that area? Or are they gonna base it on whether a woman looks like a woman, like they do everywhere? Because the reality is that this Hunter looks like a woman.

    Tamra

These particular executive orders are simply meant to pander to his intellectually limited base. They can celebrate him "putting the gays in their place" so they won't pay close attention to the fact that he's caused tens of thousands of people to lose their jobs, or that he's courting a dictator, or any number of other idiotic things. But you're right...it causes harm to an already marginalized group, while adding nothing of real value to anyone else. It's a net negative, much like the man himself.

same thing they did before April 2022, the first time a third option was ever offered (though technically an intersex person got it back in 2021 after a lawsuit, that was overturned but allowed to keep it). I mean I feel bad for them, but the same thing they did before 2022.

Here's a fact for you: about 1 in 1,000-2,000 people are born intersex, with aspects of both male and female genitalia and/or have combinations of both male and female chromosomes. The proportion varies, depending on the definition. I just read: "Applying this more precise definition, the true prevalence of intersex is seen to be about 0.018%, almost 100 times lower than Fausto-Sterling s estimate of 1.7%." 1.7% would be higher than current estimates for trans people.

The downvoted hidden comments on this one are quite unhinged. Not sure I've ever seen this Lola July before but THEY seem exceptionally triggered. Oh dear Lola, is that not your prefered pronoun? Tough luck. You sow hate, you reap the same.

I think it's time to ditch the M/F on passports. The photo is the identifying part of the passport, not the M/F. Really, the M/F does nothing other than provide a way to harrass people.

Because US Passports never have ever had someone's gender on them. It has their sex, which is their biological status.

That's awful, and if they keep doing this, soon trans people won't be able to leave the country anymore...

honestly I think that's what they're trying to do. But I think they're also trying to erase them completely. It's so sad and disheartening.

They aren't trying to erase them completely. If trans people were completely erased, they wouldn't be available as a distraction anymore. They're going to keep the existence of trans people in the public's minds for as long as they can to use them to scare people into voting against their own interests.

In what way does your genitalia concern your ability to travel? Why don't we just remove the designation for everyone?

What form of ID has your height and ethnicity? Neither my passport or driving licence contain that information. Why would either of those be needed on any form of ID?

The dirty fingernails actually made me a bit sick 🙈 Anyway, if it’s not changed on the birth certificate, maybe it’s just a genuine mistake? (Not American, idk how those processes go)

Some states in the US will not allow this without proof of gender reassignment surgery; something that not all trans people do.

Because even straight "biological" it is not that binary and never was! Since we know about chromosomes it went... difficult.
