Estonian Students Build Giant Wooden Megaphones To Listen To The Forest
A group of interior architecture students have built king-size wooden megaphones deep in the woods in Estonia. It is a large scale acoustic installation that amplifies the sounds of the forest.
The installation blends contemporary architectural space and wilderness and is accessible for hikers and nature lovers for free. The objects were placed at such a distance and angle that the sound feed from all the three directions creates a delicate unique sound at the very centre.
The installation can also be used as a sitting and resting area or even as a stage. The author of the idea is an interior architecture student Birgit Õigus. The group was instructed by designers Tõnis Kalve, Ahti Grünberg and architecture office b210.

Load More Replies...Come to Estonia, if possible? ;) We'd love to hear what you'd think of the installation in real life. The thing with recording the sound on spot is that it takes away quite a lot of the emotion, the solitude, the scents, the feel, unfortunately...though for a skilled nature documentary maker, not impossible, probably.
Load More Replies...Thanks! I agree that the look of it is quite important as well - the shift in scale, and also the way that they look a bit out of place...or out of space. Glad you like the project!
Load More Replies...the more I look at that amp..the more it resembles death in the forest. like coffins, while the truly living trees look on at the people who STILL have not learned to cherish her...let alone see HER. this isn't hatred to those architects...but they are mislead along an unnatural path of action.
Irony Missed as students support deforestation to get closer to nature
Thanks! Not sure how well it transmits to video - I think at least that it would be a bit like filming a meditation site, I'm not sure it works without the scent of the forest, the feel of the moss under your boots, and without experiencing the walk to the site through the forests. But there's a few tv crews planning a story, I've heard, so let's keep fingers crossed they manage to capture some of the essence... Happy you like the project!
Load More Replies...Altogether? I asked the architects who tutored the project through several months of preparation, they guessed the wooden material would end up to about 10 trees? The thing is, 50% of Estonia is covered in forest, so building anything really from wood just makes sense here, especially as our forests grow enough new trees to build a tiny house for a single family in...one minute, according to a quiz by the Forest Centre that I just took. Hope you liked the idea just a tiny bit even :)
Load More Replies...Hopefully they were made from recycled wood, and not trees from the actual forest where they were placed.
I'm aftaid not. If the manager of this project didn't lie aprox. 10 trees were cut down for that action.
Load More Replies...no. to destroy nature to"listen" to HER silence is unnatural. the Creator gave us ears mind and heart to meditate and learn silence. Cutting up a tree for lumber to make amps? Let the trees live and you may learn true silence. Not that manufactured crack aka "amp".
You are right. And that is really sad that Estonia, one of the last countries in Europe that still have old forests cut they all down. :'(
Load More Replies...I'm so happy you think so! I think that it's a marvellous project, and to think the students were just first year's when they started! I would have liked to be part of that course, for sure!
Load More Replies...Very Cool!!! PLEASE make a recording of the forest sounds and post on youtube in the "relaxation" genre! I would LOVE to listen!!
That's a very good idea, I'll pass it on to the group for sure :) Thanks!
Load More Replies...Glad you like it, it charmed me too from the first time I heard about it!
Load More Replies...Isn't it! Come to Estonia, Norwegian Travelers, and check it out yourself ;) I'm sure the team would love to hear your feedback!
Load More Replies...So glad to hear you think so! The students and the architects who guided them would be happy to hear that! This is the best kind of design study project really, where ideas are carried out all the way to actual construction..
Load More Replies...This is really cool. Aside from it's function, the design is just ... I don't know ... Awesome is just doesn't cut it. Now if someone ask, "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" We can always reply, "Negative. We can always hear it through the megaphone." xP
I wish you could make it possible for us to listen.... And the megaphones are good objects to photograph in the natural environment.
