The fact that it's almost always a guy responsible - well, that turns our childlike state to something more akin to "Lord of the Flies". Don't blame women for that outcome. Blame bad men. For those who are not in the loop, a “nice guy” isn’t just a fantastically underrated Ryan Gosling movie or a man who is nice, it refers to a very specific subset of romantically unsuccessful men. These men, similar to the ones in these screenshots, have a misguided and frankly entitled belief that if they are just nice to women, they will receive love and attention in return.

Given the fact that humans are not vending machines, this has no bearing on reality, but when this fact rears its head, these men tend to get very angry. It’s also worth noting that “nice guys” are not particularly nice in general, equating some conversation and favors to being a “perfect partner.”

When told that, actually, being nice via text or internet comment doesn’t make someone instantly fall for you, “nice guys” tend to react with anger. First and foremost, this very quickly shreds any last illusion that they are nice at all. This anger at their delusions being dismissed is almost as ridiculous as some of the demands they have of women who wouldn’t look at them twice.

This is all to say that self-proclaimed “nice guys” tend to be neither nice nor good romantic matches. There have been enough cases where these men, met with rejection, turn to stalking and other forms of harassment that tend to be considerably worse than anything the stereotypical “jerk” might do.

The worst thing about this is a growing number of incel 'communities' mainly online chat groups, who encourage each other to share stories about how they're constantly being rejected by the 'bitches' in favour of 'chads' and how the deserve so much better. They manage to convince themselves that all women are superficial and will only ever date what they (the incels) think is the perfect specimen of manhood.

I can't speak for everyone, but in my 30s (and now 40s), this was pretty much it on all apps. Not all dudes on all apps, but you'd run into FAR too many of these dudes pretty much on every app. It's truly depressing.

I hope like heck I never have to use a dating app. But one piece of advice I've heard is to find people who share the same hobbies, activities, whatever and get to know them first. (Join whatever group you can find that explores your favorite activities. Maybe this is extremely dated advice?)

I want to know why these men are self-identifying as a 'nice guy'. Are they really so deluded that they think their behaviour and words come under any definition of 'nice'? I'd love to see a list compiled by women of the things they would classify as 'nice'. Then a list compiled by men who would never use the words 'nice guy' to describe themselves, and then lastly a list from the 'nice guys' themselves. It would be interesting to see where the communalities arose.

That's my question too. "Nice guy" = gives you compliments, pays for dinner, opens doors for you? That's a red flag. But it's the "I was a nice guy for an hour & you wouldn't have sex with me" part that really frightens me.

I really like "The Speech Prof" on YouTube. He's a college professor, in his 40s, married with a few kids, etc. He's very much about decency and equality for marginalized people. Probably half of his vids are his spontaneous observations or light hearted anecdotes about family life. The other half are him playing clips from "Tate-esque" types, and giving logical rebuttals to the garbage they spew.

Nothing makes me so very glad to have met my (now husband) when I was 17. He's my very best friend and we've been together 20 years.
