According to Freud, infants have an innate tendency to be self-centered. The main basic, evolutionary instinct of humans is to protect themselves and survive. In order to do so, the brain has to be 'selfish’ and largely concerned about itself. But as we grow up, we start to realize that not everything revolves around us, and our self-centeredness starts to decline.

Unfortunately, not all people grow out of it, and the I’m the Main Character online community is proof of that. It’s dedicated to shaming individuals who can’t help but just want to be the center of attention by shining even more spotlight on them. If you ask me, there’s no better way to help the entitled Karens come back down to earth.

Shocked

Shocked

I was on a trip to the United Kingdom. I am a Canadian and was more than glad to see the recognition for our contribution in the world wars and especially since 10% of our population served in the second. I was absolutely stunned by what I saw at the Canadian war memorial. I didn’t say a word but should I have? It’s a memorial paying respect to thousands of Canadians (usually in their early 20s) who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and liberation of a occupied Europe.

WITH the sign I agree. But it's also a poor design if they don't want anyone on it. Without the sign it looks like the kind of art that is intended to be interactive. A local college has several art pieces that people routinely sit / climb on because they were made to be interactive.

Okay, might get downvoted here, but I disagree, the people in the picture are not at fault. It's again crappy monument design. If you build any kind of memorial side, make it clear it is a memorial side, make it clear it is not meant to be played or walked on. Make clear what it is. This thing invites people, especially children, to walk all over it.

They need to move the sign next to the memorial. Often parents with little kids don't have time to read signs. But if it's in their face, they'd be too ashamed to let their kids climb on it after having seen it. They'd get dirty looks.

We've got a lot of war memorials in the UK. That's the only one I've ever seen that looks like it was intended for skateboarding. The question for me is: why construct a war memorial that's basically ramps on a footpath? First World War memorials often feature this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_of_Remembrance. One glance at that, and you get the idea it's meant to be taken seriously.

LakotaWolf (she/her)

So anything that isn't an angular slab of stone isn't meant to be taken seriously? I get what you're saying, but the fact that this is a WAR MEMORIAL should far outweigh its "fun! Let's play on it/skateboard on it!" shape. Why construct a war memorial that's basically ramps on a footpath? Because the artist/sculptor felt that evoked something within them. They shouldn't be forced into "angular stone memorials only" or "serious-looking memorials only" simply because some people are d-bags who can't understand it's disrespectful to step/walk/skateboard on a war memorial of ANY shape.

That memorial is asking to be climbed on. Many memorials stir up the emotions like the Maya Lin Vietnam War memorial in DC. You can walk on the grass above or as you walk along side the wall, the names engraved on black stone seem to rise up. Like a tidal wave. Amazing and sad.

Obviously this is not a universal opinion or is universally appropriate but if I were to die in a war and there was a memorial made commemorate it, I would love for it to be something that children could play on. There is a war memorial near us that always seems to have kids on it (despite the signs), which does bother me, but I do wonder what the diggers, who’s names are on it, would have preferred.

I mean shame on people for climbing it, with the sign right there, but they did make it super tempting by having a wide side walk funnel down to a little side wall and making it like a hill and slide ! Still if the sign so no ! I’m a stickler for the rules but temptation can be hard for people sometimes !

Playing devil's advocate for just a second... This is an absurdly stupid design for a war memorial. If you want to see a really beautiful, moving memorial monument, just Google the Canadian monument at Vimy Ridge in France. I'm American and I have no problem stating that THAT memorial surpasses almost anything we have. This one that people are climbing on? It's more of an insult than a memorial. Are these people jerks? Absolutely. Does the "artist" who "designed" this angular piece of garbage that invites people to climb on it need to stick to their day job? Also absolutely.

I don‘t think saying something would have helped. Most people who do this/ allow their kids to do it, would not care and might even get angry. But everyone can help by saying no to their own kids and telling them (loudly, so others will hear), that it is not allowed to climb/ play on there. And if your kids say „but the others do it!“ explain that the other parents either cannot read or are disrespectfull for allowing their kids to do it. I had great success with that tactic. I think sometimes parents just did not pay attation to signs or did not see them and sometimes there were already kids on there and they thought it‘s ok, because there were already kids on there. But they will get embarrassed, if they hear another parent explaining it to their own kids without attacking them for it.

If I were ever to do something that would warrant a memorial of some kind, I'd be delighted to have little kids playing and laughing on it. How bitter do you have to be to be angry over something so innocent and joyful? If the designers had wanted people to stay off it, they would have made it vertical, not a shape that invites climbing

As the subreddit name suggests, the behavior of these people on the list falls under the term main character syndrome. It’s a fairly new colloquial definition used to describe someone who sees themselves as the main protagonist in a movie called ‘Life’ and always needs the spotlight on them.

Even though the word ‘syndrome’ is part of its name, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s not an actual syndrome or a medical diagnosis. The term originated on social media and is colloquially used to describe people with narcissistic or self-centered tendencies.

Generally, someone with the main character syndrome exhibits dramatic behaviors, overdramatizes life events, feels like they’re better than other people, and has a lot of outward confidence that might hide underlying insecurities. Additional ones include romanticizing experiences or relationships, constantly seeking validation from social media, and needing to outshine others.

Experts say that viewing yourself as a main character can be healthy. However, like most things, it should be taken advantage of in moderation. VanderBosch explained that developing confidence and owning one’s life choices can be the positive effects of this syndrome. But when it causes people to hurt others with their self-absorbed behavior, it becomes unhealthy. If a person centers themselves too much and expects the world to revolve around them, they are stepping into destructive territory.
