People Defend “Bad Mom” And Blast “Entitled Dad” After Woman Refuses To Hug Kids At Marathon Finish

People are absolutely fuming over a man who interrupted his partner’s marathon by shoving their two children right in front of the finish line. Many have since used the questionable gesture as an example of how society often expects women to sacrifice their dreams for motherhood.

A Brazilian reporter took to her TikTok on May 5 to post a video of the moment personal trainer Luciana Grandi Lourenção ran toward the finish line of the Presidente Prudente Half Marathon in Brazil.

Highlights
  • a man disrupted his wife's marathon finish by pushing their kids in front of her, risking her victory.
  • The incident highlighted societal expectations for women to prioritize motherhood over personal achievements.
  • Despite the disruption, Luciana Grandi Lourenção managed to win the Presidente Prudente Half Marathon.

The clip, which has amassed 11.2 million views, showed that Luciana was about to finish first, approaching a large yellow ribbon, when who is assumed to be her husband stopped her mid-run, advancing with their two children from the sidelines.

It is unclear whether the man had any particular intentions of allowing his kids to almost ruin their mom’s half-marathon win, but Luciana was filmed ultimately running wide, avoiding her kids to speed up and claim victory.

Upon winning, one of the little girls was seen chasing after her mom while getting in the way of other runners finishing the race.

Nevertheless, Luciana appeared to be celebrating, hugging a fellow runner, and screaming with pride.

However, the video quickly caught glimpses of the man in the background after Luciana’s win, looking confused and, one might say, even bothered by the whole thing.

In fact, the dad’s lack of cheer and what could be argued as his general attempt to ruin his partner’s triumph have not been lost on viewers, who quickly came to Luciana’s defense.

“This is a reallllly good example of the subtle way that some husbands treat their wives’ serious commitments outside of family life, like a joke or not serious, or just ‘for fun,’” a TikTok user commented.

A person exclaimed: “WE’RE MORE THAN MOTHERS!”

Someone wrote: “She worked so hard why would he slow her down when she was on the way to winning.”

“The fact that he is confused is wild!!” an observer noted.

Someone else penned: “I know he started an argument about that later.”

Nevertheless, Luciana managed to bypass her kids and won the competition

An observer added: “I love that she seemed unbothered by his behavior [and] was still able to finish and celebrate.”

“He’s trying to remind her that him and the kids is all that matters. No matter how much she accomplished. And I’m glad she chose herself!” an additional commenter stated.

A netizen added: “How did that make sense to him? She’s about to finish, someone’s behind her, she’s being timed…wait like 30 more seconds..wasn’t that obvious?”

A separate individual chimed in: “Before the finish line is CRAZY.”

A Baby Center study published in 2023 found that nearly 1 in 4 moms (22%) said they identified as “just mom” and that they had lost touch with their identity outside of parenting.

Moreover, moms struggled to find time for themselves, and a third (34%) said they put caring for themselves at the bottom of their priority list.

“What he did was wrong and also dangerous for the runners,” a reader commented

Idiot. Doesn't he know that what he did is dangerous for his wife and his kids? Also, what are they doing on the track? And why not wait for those few seconds until she crossed the finish line? Flowers, hugs, cheers, high-fives...they come after the finish line.

Men tend to do this s**t. Try to trip her up just as she's poised to win a marathon. Decide to take a job in another state and upheave the whole family just as she's advancing by leaps and bounds in her career. Calling her right before an important work meeting she absolutely needs to be 100% focused at, and starting an argument that distracts her from her work. All to try and sabotage her and make her fail. What the actual f**k, men? Why? For centuries, when women were actively banned from fulfilling their potential, wives were happy for their husbands' successes, and proud that such amazing men actually wanted to be with them. So why can't you just do the same, and be happy for her successes, and proud that such an amazing woman actually wants to be with you? It doesn't make you less of a man at all. In fact, it actually makes you a real man, not a spoiled man child, if you have the emotional maturity to be happy about every accomplishment someone else achieves, especially when that person is supposed to be someone you love, cherish, and want to be with for the rest of your life. Because, let me tell you, continuing the sabotage b******t will leave you all alone in the end. She will move on, and continue to achieve greatness. Both on her own, and eventually with someone way better than your sorry a*s.

And the moment of heart break he put their youngest through by having her watch her mum skirt past her and run away without looking back. She's back there crying and running after her. HE did that to that little child. That's emotional manipulation and abuse against his entire family. He couldn't handle his wife's success. No one is stupid enough to try and hug someone during a race, let alone JUST BEFORE THE FINISH LINE. He knew exactly what he was doing, and she wasn't having it.

Blithely unaware man. Probably a narcissist who honestly thought he didn't do anything wrong. Probably thought he was doing a great thing, because what woman would put anything before their children? It's our entire purpose in life, the race was pretty much over ok time to take the kids back mom. He probably leaves movies and concerts before they end too so he can show how manly he is and "get ahead of the crowd."

Consider what some of us have lived through. Fathers who demand we set aside our homework to cook for him and his buddies who are coming over. Boyfriends who always have a "crisis" when we need to cram for a university exam. Boyfriends who wait at the door of our classrooms to whisk us away after we're finished class and then out for a "night of fun" even though we've told them we were planning on spending the evening with a study group. Brothers who expect us to skip class to take care of their sick kids because they don't want to take a day off work. I know a woman who (in the days before everyone had their own cellphone) had a husband who just didn't pass on messages from people who wanted to arrange interviews with her during her job search. She left him. This isn't about man-hating. It's about those of us who have lived through the dudes in our lives thinking that their wants must always come ahead of our achievements.
