Actually Americans, way back in the Revolutionary days, started doing everything the opposite of what the English did in order to separate themselves from England - new country/government, new ways, thus we drive in the right lane vs. driving on the left. There are many odd little things that were changed - their 'biscuits' are 'cookies' to Americans, their 'jumpers' are our 'sweaters', their 'tights' are our 'pantyhose'...in England, saying "he's pissed" means he's drunk, here it means "he's mildly angry"...the list goes on! That makes perfect sense; I just took it for granted in all these years of dueling. Driving in England and Ireland was an adventure in avoiding hedgerows; my husband veered so far from the mid-line, I was forced to keep my window rolled up, even during some very warm days in October. Roundabouts were a whole other learning curve; sometimes we drove around and around. Once a traffic bobby followed us and made us pull over; he thought we were drunk. After he spoke to us, he stood back and said "Yanks" and waved us on. The little ladies behind the counter addressed everyone as "Luv"; little boys referred to their friends as "mates". We fell in love with an old man who drove us around Killarney in his donkey cart; we met him in a pub full of German horse breeders, jodphurs and all. When we asked him how he liked so many Germans everywhere, he responded that it was the fault of the Americans. My father understood that; he was a perverse Irishman, too.
