These 22 Pics Are Composed Of As Many Pixels As There Are Animals Still Alive In These Species
A brilliant 2008 campaign by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has been resurfacing thanks to a recent reddit post going viral. The campaign, called WWF Japan – Population by pixel, was created by the agency Hakuhodo C&D / Tokyo. The brains behind it were creative directors Nami Hoshino, Yoshiyuki Mikami, and designer Kazuhiro Mochizuki. Inspired by their work, Imgurian JJSmooth44 made a follow-up to their project and it’s just as powerful as the original. “I did it as a programming challenge,” JJSmooth44 wrote.

“I did it … in python … but the code is very gross. I only worried about the final product and not the readability/niceness of the code.” They paid homage to Hakuhodo C&D / Tokyo by scraping the Animal Planet endangered animals list.

Here’s what people said about the project
Agreed: the pictures send a strong message. But when it states that the number of pixels in the picture show the number of animals left alive but they clearly show fewer pixels than animals, that's not right. Easy ones to check, both Amur leopard and Javan rhino say 60 animals but pictures have 42 pixels. It would have been just as effective to do it correctly. Unless the pictures have been cropped for some reason.
Load More Replies...The Images which are Suppose to show 60 pixels have 42 ... without being picky or off topic, because I really love the ideal of expression, wouldn't be a Grid of 7x8 px more correct? And how about this "big" ones if the small ones are 50% off the number?
This is a very interesting and thought-provoking concept but the fin whale picture here is actually a humpback whale and the Hector's dolphin looks like a dusky dolphin. Species are not correct.
You should had one of humans also to compare it with this , it will c9me in HD 4k .. lol
This is really scary, and heart breaking. I wish I could help, but I don't know how to.
Just put a black picture at the end with nothing in it, and caption it "human intelligence and awareness" and you'd have a winner.
Artist: Here's how few animals there are of this species. Person: Wow, that sucks. So what can we do? Artist: ... Person: ... Artist: ... Person: ... Artist: Here's how few animals there are of this species. Making art is one thing. Doing something proactive to raise their numbers is another. However, I don't see anything above as to how the common man can help. Without that, it's just artistic bitching.
Full Name: And have the Ted Talks and polite conversations and hopeful messages in the past thirty years done anything? People are starting to take action NOW, when the problem is on the verge of becoming unsolvable. In ELEVEN years, climate change will be irreversible. So sorry if the generation below decides that they've had enough and need to SHOUT to get your attention. Because not enough people paid attention when we said it nicely. So why don't you keep digging your heels in and critisizing people rather than understanding the fact that there is no time left! Gosh, even a sixteen year old sounds smarter and more mature then you....
Load More Replies...Agreed. This is why I vote no more having kids, or at lest spreading the Virus that is us to the stars
Load More Replies...Did not know this, turns out you are correct. Now they are only 'vulnerable' as opposed to endangered. All the conservation work with them is starting to pay off!
Load More Replies...More than 99 percent of all species, amounting to over five billion species, that ever lived on Earth are estimated to have died out. No humans involved. In 2016, scientists reported that 1 trillion species are estimated to be on Earth currently with only one thousandth of one percent described
Humans are completely involved as we are the cause of most of extincions. Only the animals that we use to eat, and after those we use to see or enjoy, are save nowadays.
Load More Replies...Interesting thank you spreading awareness. If your reading this I hope you have a great day and know. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV
Ummm... not only are the pixels incorrect but Green sea turtles...one of my favorite animals...The two largest green turtle nesting populations in the world are found at: Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica—22,500 females nest per season (on average). Raine Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia—18,000 females nest per season (on average). The message is still valid and important... but why not take the time to do it right?
As depressing as this is, I think it's a great way to show how important it is to save these species.
In this context I like XKCD's "land mammals by weight" graph, https://xkcd.com/1338/ --- it's surprising how many sheep, etc, and how few free/wild animals.
Simple solution just kill everyone within a 40 mile radius of their habitats
if only there was a super duper HD image of a human in the end- cos we're jusssst increasing!
Brilliant! This should be on billboards and outdoor screens everywhere!
Please let me recommend watching what Sir David Attenborough has to say: A message to world leaders (Sep 24, 2019) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyYpExl8AJU and also: Sir David Attenborough on life, death, climate change and the future of the planet (Sep 24, 2019) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaSXN2K05Ls
I think this is a great initiative. In the age of the image, we demand technical perfection. With these images we finally become uncomfortable with our own natural shortcomings.
this was an amazing article! it really showed the authors message and determination, but the only thing that depresses me is that i want to help but i cant. I don't know how :(
Seriously breaks my heart. Whose fault is this? Hmmm....let me guess.
earth's fault if you actually look at the numbers
Load More Replies...Humans don't deserve this planet; fortunately, we're on track to become extinct in less than 9 years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqIt93dDG1M
It's so sad, depressing and disgusting what humans have done to earth and it's beautiful animals.
New York alone has more than 4K resolution worth of people.
Load More Replies...Let the panda die. Those money could be used for other animals that aren't lazy, fat, picky eaters and bamboo killers
Maybe we should just let rude humans die too, why waste food and other valueable resources on those plant and animal killers? Also, learn proper grammar.
Load More Replies...How could they be that exact in their estimation of the Panda population, are they all in captivity?
They do DNA tests on panda poop to see how many individuals there are in an area
