Quitting a toxic workplace and shutting the doors with bad management behind them can feel overwhelming. Especially if you really tried to put up with all the nonsense and stay positive even when the facts showed the opposite.

No wonder the last day and even the last minute in that job can feel not just special, but as memorable as if it happened yesterday. So when someone posed a question “What was your final 'eff you' to a boss you didn’t like?” on Ask Reddit, the thread went viral, amassing 21.1k upvotes.

Below we wrapped up some of the most interesting stories people shared.

If the law is well written, you could turn up with your dog defending you and win if you're right. And that's how it should be. If the law doesn't protect the innocent, it's bad laws

A lot of law students work Pro Bono with organizations to help people who cannot afford lawyers and so work under licensed lawyers who also volunteer. They learn how to be lawyers and get class credit from their professors at the same time in the USA.

How do you hire a law student? They’re not allowed to give legal advice without a license, right? Or is that just in my country?

Agreed. When in law school I clerked for a firm but that meant a lot of admin work! Was absolutely never allowed to file anything with the court or put my name on anything.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job I was a program director developing and piloting a new program, and after a year of being overloaded and telling our exec director I either needed a second person or a smaller caseload, he pulls me into his office and goes “We don’t really think you’re a good fit for this position, but you’re a bright young lady and we’d hate to lose you. I’m giving you the option to stay and be my secretary. You have until 7am tomorrow to decide.” I took an early lunch, walked to my other job, asked if I could take on more hours, walked back, and told him I had found other employment and would have my stuff cleared out by noon. He asked if I could stay 2 more weeks to train a new person, and I told him no. What if we paid you a consultation fee? No. But you’re the only person in the county certified! Should have thought of that earlier. Bonus: This was in the middle of an audit, where it was discovered that he owed me about $3000 from unpaid hours. I like to call it my leaving bonus.

I actually gave my two weeks notice at H&R Block. I was the receptionist at the height of tax season. I was also taking night classes for accounting. This meant I had to leave at 5pm in order to make my class by 6pm driving into Seattle. The night receptionist quit and the manager kept trying to extend my hours. After some time, I found a job doing data entry for another branch of a sister company that was 10 minutes from my classes. I gave two weeks notice, she flipped saying I couldn't leave until they found a replacement. I knew it would be dragged out. When two weeks were up, I get a call early on Monday. "You need to come in. I already called your other boss and told her you can't start with them until you finish your obligation to us." I said "Then I guess I'm not working for either place." And I hung up on her. Had I known then what I know now, I would have turned her into the Department of Labor because what she did was illegal in our state.

So they don't think she's good in her position, even though she's the only one certified for her job. They'd like her to change to a different job. Does that mean she would now be doing twice the work? Seems like they're screwing themselves even if she did stay.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job As far as my life goes it was the sh**tiest job I ever took. Long hours, a lot of crunch, no company vehicle and a lot of travel. Every time I'd go to a different site I would get like 20 different phone numbers for the various people I was communicating with. Anyway so all of the contacts for these people was on my company phone that was synched up to my personal GMail (which stored all the phone numbers). At some point management decided my job was redundant and decided to lay me off without notice and without severance. First thing I did was wipe my company phone clean before handing it over. A few days later they called me asking where all the contact information was stored. "Sorry I don't work for you anymore."

If the company was asking for data that the employee had in their personal account or personal phone, I can understand not wanting to help. But wiping company data from company equipment when you're fired is sabotage, not a clever retort.

5 minutes with most tech support and 100% of the data would be recovered unless a secure erase program was used to wipe the phone. hell plenty of free programs out there to do it now. when deleting stuff it is not actually deleted, the operating system just removes the file header and designates those sectors as being free to be written to. data remains and can be recovered until those sectors are written to again. hence needing secure erase programs which after deletion they write gibberish to the sectors to fully wipe the original data.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job On my last day at the bowling alley, I sent an email to head office detailing all the s**t he’d been up to but everyone was too afraid to report (inc. trying to fire someone when he found out she was pregnant - a big no no in my country). I heard later that the next day regional manager and a couple of executives turned up for a surprise inspection. He’s found in the office, having backed a 16 year old female colleague in the corner, screaming at the top of his lungs, with his big red vein-throbbing face touching hers. She was distraught and obviously crying her eyes out. Manager was escorted off premises there and then and never heard from again.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job Working retail I quit at the register on Black Friday. I had recently gotten another full-time job and was keeping this retail gig because I liked the employee discount and due to my other job this check was pure fun money, all that is to say I didn't *need* the retail job. My store manager comes over at hour 7 of my shift, with chaos and a line 100 people long, and has the nerve to tell me my up-sales(fishing for promo signups, i.e. rewards, credit cards etc) weren't cutting it for how much traffic I was seeing. In front of the customers! I already couldn't stand this B so I said, "You know what you do it, I'm done" and then I apologized to my coworkers on the way out.

Then you report him to the FAA and the corporate company lawyers if you live in the US. Just make sure the lawyers know you are willing to go to the press with the information. Nothing gets a fire lit under the butt of a company lawyer like the thought of having to defend against a class action lawsuit.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job I was thinking about quitting but has holding back. I scheduled a vacation with 3 extra days. It was a once in a lifetime type of trip. He rejected my vacation request. I thought about it for a couple of hours. Went to his office and told him 'I'm taking the trip no matter what.' The next morning the boss met me at hr and gave me a formal written warning. I responded by giving him my 2 week notice. They apologized and tried to convince me not to leave but it was too late.

I know someone who did this. Contractually, the administration is not allowed to question our use of vacation days or personal days. We given them notice, but they're not allowed to deny it. During COVID, they told her she was too valuable to take the break she desperately needed. She handed in notice and is now making double elsewhere while we continue to fall apart without her guidance.

Decades ago, my boss quit with no notice, I got promoted into her spot AND, in 2 weeks, I was supposed to leave on a week long trip to NYC that had been planned for 4 months. My boss said I had to be back 2 days early, there was no way I could change my ticket (without spending an extra $3-400 (in the late 80's, almost full paycheck for me) so I lied through my teeth that I missed my flight. My ultimate boss wasn't happy but accepted it (I was a REALLY good employee). I did feel guilty about it though.

A teacher in the school I was working in had a family reunion in New Zealand coming up during term time. (We're in Canada) The superintendent wouldn't give her the time off even though she offered to pay for her substitute teacher. She didn't go to the reunion. I really felt for her. The superintendent was a real jerk anyway. He, like me, was from England and he was always condescending and superior to staff. I happily left when my husband was transferred. Loved my job and got on with most of the other staff but nasty stuff trickles down from the top.

In one of my previous organisations, exit interviews were a joke. More like a tick box activity. There was this one particular manager who everyone hated. Every person from her team, named her as the reason of leaving. No action was ever taken. Last time I checked she was still working there.

Remaining boss requested all my files so they could continue my work. I said the day I leave you will get all my files. Last day of work I accessed the main frame and down load not just the relevant files… 20 years of files… tons and tons of folders and files all in random folders… I sent him the link. He signed off . I left. He contacted me a few days later and said that’s not what I meant by all the files. I said I don’t work there anymore I have no computer… I gave you exactly what you asked for.

I left an incredibly underpaid, toxic, hostile, high stress and abusive workplace a few months back after my manager of two days fabricated an entire story about how I was being insubordinate. After I found my current job which has been absolutely wonderful, one of my former colleagues told me she put in her two weeks because she was getting physically ill from the b.s at the other place. By the end of the day when she put it in, I had her an interview with my company. She out her two weeks in on a Thursday and started working with me the following Monday. Trying to snag a couple others too 🤣

My mom did this. After 15 years with the same company (the city), her boss shifted to an awful person and when she went to the director, who was her boss for many years and knew my mom was a great employee, they said “maybe you’re the problem, and gave her the option to quit with the same severance as if she was laid off, so she did. She then applied for a job with the county, that was through a temp agency, and while they had filled that job, the recruiter needed someone to cover her for a vacation (my mom was in HR), so she offered it to my mom for a week. In that time, she moved around 15 people from city jobs to county jobs, and on the last day, the person they hired for that original job resigned and she placed herself in that one - and ultimately met my stepdad.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job My boss had been completely ignoring me because he perceived my actions of talking about an upcoming project with the COO (his boss) as me “going over his head”. It had been almost a month and he hadn’t agreed to meet or talk with me, he would only send me tasks via email. I was tired of the childishness so I found another job. With my resignation letter in hand I walked to his office to resign and he predictably refused to meet with me claiming to be too busy, so I continued to walk to the COO’s office to let him know I was resigning. The COO asked if my boss knew which was the perfect time to let him know about the silent treatment I had been receiving. My old boss no longer works there :)

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job Had a boss that was terrible to me. Him and his wife owned a restaurant together, and one day when he was yelling at me while I was getting the bar ready I saw him put in his password on his phone. It was '(space, period, space). We all know something was going on with him with another employee. Months later he wouldn't give me 3 days off because my niece died of SIDS. So I walked out, bought a $30 burner phone and texted his wife his password. They got divorced, she kept the steakhouse, and he's had 2 failed attempts at opening any establishment. I make more than him now and he lives in the c**ppy apartments down the road from me.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job Was inline for a promotion after my old supervisor was fired for ethics issues. Boss decided to open the requisition, interview and hire a person all in the 2 days I had off. Since the person hired had no experience in my department/field, I was expected to train my new supervisor, and the other new people they also hired. I did none of that, quit (gave my 2 weeks), and didn't explain a single thing to anyone in those 10 days. Supposedly it took almost half a year to get close to where they were before this all went down.

That business of waiting for an absence to undercut: While I was In the US Navy at a training command, we had an Australian Warrant Officer come over to California for a three week course. A week later, the WO is in my office. Back home, a young sailor with whom he'd been working, to help him grow up & do his job properly, had written to him to tell him than a Lieutenant in their department had instituted discharge proceedings the day after the WO left. The guy was in a panic. The WO wrote up a request for a delay until his return, as he was the divisional officer for the young man, I took it to the Aussie consulate in San Francisco, they faxed it to the Commanding Officer, who granted the delay. I got follow-up: the WO let me know later that not only did he get to keep the young man in training, he filed on the Lieutenant for going around him, and got him a formal reprimand (which goes in the record, likely slowing down or stopping promotion chances).

usually it's blatant sexism...I would bet that OP is a woman and the new superior is a man. It happened twice to my sister. She was the most experienced but when an upper position opened they either installed a less experienced man or even hired a new one and expected her to train him

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job When I left, he promised to take half what I was making and spread it among the team as raises to cover the extra work. He was trying to stop the exodus as I was the 3rd person to leave in a short time. So when I left I handed my pay stub (minus social security info) to the team and said >Just in case he tried to lie. This is what I make. He tried to lie. They also realized they were being underpaid by a good chunk. He told me that was a breach of confidential information and they could sue me. I told him to sue me then. Never heard from that company again except for tax docs. For those unfamiliar, in the US you are legally allowed to disclose your own pay. And its illegal for your employer to tell you that you cant. Im assuming if he did try that HR or the lawyers quickly corrected him before they had to hand me a settlement.

After finding a much better job I handed her a list of my job responsibilities, which she asked for because she didn't understand what I did there. That's why retention is so important. Good employees master their tasks after a while. They can do them without thinking much because they accumulated procedural knowledge. That's something you can't learn or train from books, it's like the so called muscle memory, you jost know without thinking what goes where and who's responsible for what. And then you can take on more responsibility and work faster. You're becoming more efficient with every passing year and losing you at that stage will cost the company good money. That's why a smart company gives annual raises. They know their workers get quicker and more efficient each passing year, adding more value to the company. That doesn't mean that each and every worker is like that, that's what evaluation is for. Carnegie once said, you can't make money from savings. You make money from smart investments. And he indeed was one of the very few rich people who understood that training, educating and retaining your workers was investment.

Too many employers prefer to take the cheap route. Instead of annual raises for job retention and loyalty, they toss out the experienced and knowledgeable workers and bring in entry level staff at entry level wages. I was laid off along with two dozen other high functioning IT personnel so the company could dumb down the level of support, while cycling temps in and out. Clients suffered while the level of service plummeted, and the execs raked in the "saved" money.

My wife used to have a job where each person in her department was expected to do the work of 2-3 people. Occasionally, they'd announce they'd just hired 2-3 new people to work in the office. Originally, my wife hoped that meant that the workload would be more evenly distributed. Nope. Her employer always decided, "Now that we have 2-3 new people in the office, that means we can take on 2-3x as much work!" So nothing ever changed.

In my country you'll receive unemployment money right away if you're fired, but have a grace period if you quit by your own will. So it would have been more financially lucrative to just get fired.

Perfectly legal (for either party) in the U.S. if you work in an at will state. However, firing someone when they've given notice is not a flex. Workers who are fired can collect unemployment, those who quit cannot.

Well, if he'd fired you anyway, this was stupid. I'd first given proper notice just in case, so he would fire me, to keep up appearances, if he didn't fire me, I'd still be able to quit on the spot. As far as I understand it, if the other job surprisingly fell through, OP would then be eligible for unemployment when the boss has fired them

I worked as a receptionist in a sales office. Our warehouse guys were always playing tricks on me. I was always getting even. Once they installed a spring in my desk drawer, so when I went to open it… it snapped back and I ended up breaking two fingers because they got caught when it closed. They felt awful. I got even by leaving an open can of tuna behind a bottom file cabinet drawer in the warehouse. They could NOT find the source of the smell for MONTHS. Our manager knew. He thought it was hilarious. One day, I came in and immediately smelled that rotten tuna. Sure enough… it was placed in my trash can. I snuck it back behind another drawer in the warehouse. The guys called me and said, “Heads up. Ya might want to get rid of that fish before a customer walks in.” I replied, “I already did. You can’t smell it back there?” And by the end of the day, they were begging me to tell them where I’d hidden it. Broken fingers aside… it was all fun and games. I miss those guys!

A few friend's and I buttered our hs bully's car one night. You just apply a nice, thick layer over the entire exterior including windows and door handles, it's incredibly hard to wash off without VERY hot water and a lot of scrubbing. It took a few weeks for him to finally stop pulling up to school with a semi-greasy car coated in insects. I don't advocate for vandalism (we were stupid teenagers at the time) but I'll be damned if it doesn't leave me laughing every time I think about it to this day.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job Salary was delayed by 2 weeks and was about told to be lenient because the company is growing and needs our help and cooperation. I waited for another week but I was ignored. I left the job without notice and upon them calling me to sue me, I replied “You have money to sue people but no money to pay employees.” I switched job and I am at a better place right now.

If the company wants something from you: oh please be more of a team player! The company needs you! You are too important to go to vacation right now! How can you leave us in a lurch this way? If you need the company or want a raise: can you prove to me that you added any value to the company that deserves our consideration? If you don't like the job I can find someone else any time! And the American workforce has a huge chunk of people who believe that c**p in full and doesn't see the contradiction at all.

In my country, if a company cannot pay the workers, you can file for bankruptcy in court. It will almost automatically go thru if the workers have not being paid. And then the state goes in to pay outstanding sallaries, miney that is taken out of whatever the bankruptcy proceedings manage to shake loose. And yes. I have helped people do that. It's amazing how fast the gears of the authorities work in a case like that.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job She was a psychopathic narcissist. I knew she was plotting to leave her husband. Because I found it on a numbered to-do list on top of her desk. I was floored that she would leave it where her husband could see- it was a home office in one large room. I took a photo. She proceeded to harass and gaslight her husband, who took off one night and slept in a parking lot. When he returned the next day she said “you left me, so it’s over.” After she royally screwed me over for the umpteenth time I quit. A few weeks later I sent the photo to her husband, copied her, and wrote, “For your records” in the subject line. Then I reported her to the IRS.

The VA where I worked had administrators like this. We had husband & wife doctors. Wonderful people. They almost seemed like a prince & princess. The woman doctor gets a patient's records dropped on her desk. This Congressman needs a compensation & pension exam & we expect you to give him a 100% rating. This doctor was very eloquent & polite until you ticked her off. She is doing her exam first & not just signing off on a disability. She told her husband how she was being pressured. Whatever decision you make, honey, I am with you. The next day she sits down at her computer & she sees an alert that she had signed off on this guy's exam. She did not write it & she did not put her electronic signature on it. She went upstairs & unloaded with a full tirade of epic insults & swear words. She then collected herself, went to where her husband worked, & said "let's go." They both walked out. The place lost two of their best doctors.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job I worked at a dry cleaner for a summer. Front desk, cash under table type of job. I worked 50 hours one week and he told me he'd pay me time and a half for the OT. I go into work on payday and my cash envelope is not in the drawer. I called him and asked about it and he told me he couldn't pay me for my work yet. I kindly informed him that I was taking the money I was owed, and locking up the shop, and left.

He was employing more trainee than the legislation allows for a company this size and was making them work them like full paid workers, with basically no formation at all. He got controlled and fined a big amount of money, had to give money to previous trainee that had worked for him, etc… His company closed for bankruptcy after that. Sweet justice.

I worked for a house cleaning company. The owners sold the business to an idiot. We were 1099 employees, her accountant advised her to change us to W-2. She did. But she started extorting money from a Spanish employee. She said she needed to pay back taxes and was taking the money out of her check. She wasn’t taking it from me. Im American. I told her to tell her hell no! You are not responsible to pay those taxes back. That’s her mistake. The boss then tells me not to be speaking to them about that kind of stuff. She stopped taking the money. She also put me on leave. Told me I needed a break. Few days go by, I said if you don’t let me work I need a separation notice. I took it to unemployment. She appealed and we had a hearing. There were no policies, so she couldn’t say I broke them. I won and got the money. I was a 1099 employee so I didn’t put that much tax money in so she had to pay my unemployment. She didn’t like that I stood up to her. The company went under shortly after

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job Applied for a full time job at a daycare. Interview was on Friday and the director said she would text me over the weekend to tell me my hours for next week. Yay! I got the job! Monday rolls around and no text or email from her so I am sitting in my pjs at home thinking I’m out of work. At 10am a random number calls me and she asks me to come in for 11. I let it slide thinking she lost track of time or whatever. By the end of the day I asked for my schedule and she said she’ll contact me tomorrow morning at 9am. The next day is the same thing, except this time she calls at 11am asking to come in for 11:15!!!!! I waited TWO hours for her call. Now I have no car and live 15 minutes away. On top of this the shifts were only 4ish hours long, so the job isn’t even full time. I tell her I need a schedule by the end of the day. Didn’t get one. The next day she calls at a random time but too late, I’m busy at an interview with a different job! I tell her I’ll stop in to get my cheque by the end of the week because she can’t respect my time and lied on the ad about being full time. Also I am not getting paid to be on call.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job My boss's boss hated me. He drove out my previous boss that was one of the best managers I ever worked for. He demoted me, and then when the company laid-off EVERYONE else who knew my product, I insisted he restore me to my previous status or I'd quit. He did, and he wasn't happy about it. Eventually he demoted me again and I found another job. During my exit interview with HR, I spoke at length about how he'd f****d up the department and fired many excellent people who were now working for the competition. A few months later he was escorted to the door and told never to return. Apparently the company took a good, long look at him and found he'd been holding his meetings with his subordinate managers in a local bar and would sometimes never return to the office. I don't know whether my discussions with HR had anything to do with their review of his performance, but I'd like to think so.

This reminds me of an AskAManager story where a boss got audited after loosing too many employees and then they tasked an employee to help him clean house and get more efficient because his department didn't generate revenue. He took her tasks away from her and gave it to his favourite employees and did everything to sabotage her and then whined to AAM that his department got dissolved after she gave up and quit. This could easily be the story from the competent employees point of view.

30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job Worked at a stupid fake French cafe & the manager was an idiot who made a point of giving me the sh**tiest jobs just to show he was in charge. One day he pulled me off the floor (where I earned tips as a server) and made me polish silver for hours. He kept returning & throwing every second piece back at me, telling me to do it over. Kept saying “missed a spot”. So I walked out . . . and kept the apron. I kept the beautiful black apron with the embroidered logo and still wear it when I cook today. 30 Savage Ways People Got Revenge On Their Bosses Before Leaving The Job I was working as an English teacher thru student contract. Boss decided to fire me just because other teacher found me annoying and was gossiping s**t about me constantly and boss just ate it all up. She ends up telling me that I suck at the job and I'm fired, but I will have to work for another week AND cover extra classes for a sick teacher as a substitute. I said okay, then the next day sent the boss a text half an hour before my classes that I don't think it's okay for me to work for another week, I don't want to ruin children's education with my s****y teaching skills, it's just morally wrong for me, and I don't have to work for an extra week anyway since student contract tells me I can leave when I want. She was fuming. After that, I sent an e-mail to the school's director explaining mobbing I've experienced with that awful colleague, saying how she doesn't deserve the position and sent her screenshots of abusive messages she was sending me. I had a boss who was just plain horrible - she took pride in making people cry in every meeting she held where she had to discuss something with someone & I was one of the few people who she couldn’t make cry so she was kind of borderline fascinated with me. It’s a relatively small industry where you hear about people moving around at certain levels & I heard she had managed to get a job at a company that is famous for a really great atmosphere, where people will stay for decades because it’s a genuinely nice place to work. I used my resources/contacts to get contact information for her future bosses & made an anonymous email account just to email them & warn them about what a horrible person she was, telling them if (when) there was an issue they could use my email as the first piece of evidence rather than waiting for multiple reports. I also told people who worked for the company to be very, very wary & that management had been warned. I don’t know if it helped but I hope so.

Oh I have a great one for this. 2.5 years ago, my company decided to dock my bonus by 50% because of the “pandemic”. I was the only one in a sales team of 40 that achieved his target. Didn’t say a word to anyone. Just filled out an exit form on the HRM software and mentioned the reason as “Company stole my money while the CEO bought a brand new car”. My manager calls me being the a*****e that he thought he was and I told him, very calmly, “Shri you’re just their guard dog. I don’t talk to dogs”. The CEO calls me (small firm. Just 50 odd people) and starts to tell me how his personal life has nothing to do with my docked bonus. Told him he can “go ride that car into a canyon for all I care” An hour later he calls me from another number since I wasn’t picking up his calls. On the other end was a coworker in conference telling me how great the CEO was. How he gave him an advance on his payment when he needed it. This was followed by 2 minutes of me and my gf laughing loudly on the call and talking about how this was so pathetic. As if I’m a girl who has broken up with him and he calls with his friend to tell me how he’s the best guy ever. It finally ended with the CEO speaking up and revealing that he was also on the call and could hear us and my last words were, “Oh that’s great. I was worried you wouldn’t realise what a b***h you were being.” Never dealt with them again. Started my own business. Making my monthly salary in about a week.

It depends on where they live if that's legal or not. But even there is a two weeks nice, if you decide not to work that time, it's usually okay. Only thing the company can basically do at that point is not to pay you for the two weeks.
