I Recreated Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ Using Only Needle And Thread
I started making embroideries in 2013 when I didn’t have much money and needed a birthday present for my housemate. So I picked up a needle, thread, some fabric and I started making something. Since then, I’ve had an overwhelming response to my embroideries, and I’ve begun making them regularly for my friends and family. I love how natural and relaxing embroidery feels to me, and I’m really excited to keep expanding my practice.
In 2014, my Mum, having seen the things I’d made, requested that I recreate the Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh for her. It was intimidating at first, as that is one of my favourite artists and one of my favourite paintings. But I started slowly, gathering my materials, mapping out what I was going to include, and carefully drawing the painting onto the fabric. Over the next month, I spent roughly 60 hours lovingly recreating the painting bit by bit, and trying to include as much detail as possible.
I am currently working on an embroidery for my sister, and then I will be creating things of my own design to sell in the future.

Share on FacebookVery, very cool! You did one helluva job. I have embroidered and cross stitched for many moons and the the thought to do something like this never occurred to me until recently. Thank you so very much for sharing as it has helped motivate me to pick it back up. I am impressed with your work. Do you have other projects to share? I would love to see them

I would like to learn to embroidery am semi disabled and get pretty bored with reading, TV and Computer. I have a problem walking so I sit most of the time. would love to do embroidery work , Hands too stiff with arthritis for knitting and crochet, but embroider work might just be the thing, does one get patterns to work by ? I live in Jeffreys Bay, East Cape , S A . Can you please advise me where to start looking for patterns or instructions, I can do cross stitch. The stitching that you used on Starry Night intrigued me and I like it very much, my late mother once did a very nice piece of work in long and short stitch.
Hi Anna, Thanks for your message. Something that might help if you're looking to start embroidering would be an embroidery stand, because it can be quite hard on your fingers to hold the hoop while you're working on it. And as for patterns, I'd say check your local craft store, or maybe have a look around on the internet for one that you like? I just had a quick look on ebay.com and there are some nice ones. Also, congratulations on living in what looks like a beautiful part of the world! Thanks, Lauren
