Buy It For Life: 40 Durable Products That Deliver No Matter How Old They Are (New Pics)
We used to be people of repair and resourcefulness, taking pride in our ability to tinker with the longevity of our things. But nowadays? Not so much. We may try to recycle, but as soon as something breaks we're looking for a replacement. Luckily, our ingenuity can match our laziness.
The subreddit r/BuyItForLife has 973k members and it's dedicated to practical quality products that were made to last. Like a phone from 2006. Or a sewing machine from the early 20th century!
The person who founded this online community, u/Petrarch1603, got the inspiration for it from r/ShutUpandTakeMyMoney. "I noticed that sometimes [it featured] useful products that I was interested in buying. Unfortunately, I also noticed a lot of gimmicks and cheaply made products too," they explained.
Now, r/BuyItForLife is twice the size of its predecessor. I guess people really appreciate pristine craftsmanship!

Bought It In '88 With Money My Grandmother Left Me. My Mother Was Upset That I Spent My Inheritance On Something As Ephemeral As A Bicycle. I've Ridden Thousands Of Miles On It, Including A Double Century In 2000. Now It's My Townie Bike, For Shopping, Commuting, And Errands
I have an expensive bike, too. I figure it's paid for itself in health, fun, and gas saved when I use it to run errands.
Absolutely. Not sure I'd agree with a bike being 'ephemeral' as they describe it - like most things they last if you look after them.
Load More Replies...I don’t get why anyone would object to purchasing a bicycle…ever. They are very environmentally friendly, great form of exercise (not too hard on the body)and can be used in so many terrains! Good on you
I think maybe it was more about the cost of the bike. There is a wide range of prices from a few hundred up to thousands. A basic bike will get you around town, but a bike with a better, lighter frame and high quality parts will last longer, give you less hassle, and be more pleasant to ride.
Load More Replies...I'm still riding the Schwinn bike I got at age 12. I have my "old fogey card," meaning my bike is about 55 years old and still adding up the miles.
A "century" is 100 miles. A double century is a grueling 200-mile endurance cycling event. People cycle for 12 to 15 hours a day to complete the route. South Africa is hosting their Old Mutual Wealth DC at the end of November. You've got plenty of time to prepare... jk

Buy It For Multiple Lives! 1916 Singer 66, My Main Sewing Machine
A great brand! they never die!! And their designs are very beautiful
I restore vintage sewing machines as a hobby. I've never failed to get one back to sewing better than any modern machine can!
I really need to get the one I inherited from my grandmother back to its former glory. It's one of the ones built into a table - I can't decide the best way to, as the veneer is coming off a little.

Mine's a bit newer, the initial slant needle design from the early 50s. It has an electric motor, but it's largely mechanical. The case is metal, all the drive parts and gearing are metal. It's a beast, but it's quite easy to do maintenance on. I don't have any of the attachments Grandma used to have. No idea where they ended up. They're quite fascinating, though. They all ran off the motion of the needle going up and down. They have some pretty intense mechanical ingenuity to accomplish things like decorative stitching, ruffling, rolled hems, etc. I've spent more time than I would've thought possible looking at YouTube videos of their workings.
My granny had one, the treadle was a nightmare for getting body parts stuck underneath
I have my grandmother's machine. It's a White machine. Which is funny, because that was my maiden name!
Our loyal readers might remember our first piece on r/BuyItForLife. However, people have made plenty of cool posts on the subreddit since then so we felt like a follow-up was necessary too.
Plus, this time we reached out to the people running the sub and one of the moderators was kind enough to have a little chat with us. "The most popular items I see based on what's posted are: Stanley Thermos, Darn Tough Socks, Kitchen Aid mixers, Red Wing boots, and pots and pans, particularly cast iron," they told Bored Panda.

Our cooler crossed the ocean came with my parents when they returned to Greece and has made thousands of extra kilometres since. It's still going strong. It's so surreal to see this thing here now :D
I had one of these beauties (Red and white!) and my EX got rid or it because it was "too old" now my ice melts WAY TOO FAST!!!
We also asked the moderator what they think allows some of these items to persevere for as long as they do. "I'm not an expert by any means but I think there are a few factors," they said.
"Most products are built to be as cheap as possible .... and poorly assembled (maybe partly due to planned obsolescence but mostly just due to the fact that people in general like spending less). The products that you see lasting longer are often made of higher quality material and care when built. But they're also priced accordingly."

She Transplanted Some To One House, Then Another And Another, Then To My Place, And Again When I Moved. We Have Never Purchased Oregano In My Entire Life. It Even Pops Up In The Lawn, Makes Grass Cutting Smell Nice
Actually it's very practical to have some basic herbs available all the time! Unfortunately I'm useless in trying to keep any plant alive!
Try mint, it's actually an infestant herb. If you don't keep it in a vase it will cover all the soil available, i've seen it even grown in a crack on a wall. On the upside it smels good and keeps pests away.
Load More Replies...I feel that oregano is a blessing somehow. Dunno why but I like the possible 'eternity' of it 🌱 I grew a chili plant once that someone had tossed away into the trash. It was one of those £5/$5 novelty seeds-in-a-box gifts you find in bookstores. Felt sorry for it and perhaps because I was unemployed at the time, thought that if I rescued it, someone in turn would rescue me. Anyway it grew from a seed in a damp pad of cotton wool on my bedroom window into a plant that bore flowers and chilli peppers. It got so large I eventually gave it to a garden centre as it became home to aphids and was too large for my small flat/apartment. Giving it away I felt sad but proud like (I'm gonna say it) a parent. I loved that plant. I'd like to think cuttings from that tiny seed that someone threw away is taking root and growing. It's been the only plant I've ever been able to grow and I don't think I'll ever forget it.
I loved your story. And your recycling approach to the plant and Life.
Load More Replies...Our oregano has become ground cover in areas where nothing else will grow. The plants that crept out into the lawn smell like a pizzeria when I mow. Yum. Our first home had chives seed into the lawn. I would get a craving for burgers cutting that. LOL.

But choosing longer-lasting products can be tricky. The price doesn't always tell the full story. A few years ago, The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) published an interesting study, carried out by the University of Southern Brittany, the Sircome agency, and the University of Southern Bohemia.
Its main goal was to see whether displaying a product's lifespan would influence a consumer's decision to purchase. In other words, would we choose the same products if we had this information?
Graphgear 500 Mechanical Pencil. The One On Top I’ve Used For 20 Years, The Other Is Brand New

Lunch Box From ‘89. Thermos From ‘97. New Old Stock. I’m So Excited
Used to be same in the US for a certain brand. You weren't legit if your thermos wasn't!f
Load More Replies...My husband carried this exact lunchbox and thermos everyday to work for 28 years. They never give out.
I have one of those thermos jars, bought it about 37 years ago. Took it to work every day. Bulldozer ran over it and all it did was break the handle loose. Two hose clamps fixed it fine.
It sadly depends. I have the one on the picture (I think - maybe a few years younger) and it's fantastic. Holds hot drinks without a problem for 24 hrs and over (it's still HOT after 24, warm for longer). My friend has a Stanley in black - doesn't even keep warm for 24 hrs :-( We tested it - my tea was still so hot you could burn your skin, hers was lukewarm at best.

Here’s The Before And After Finished Product On My $5 Allen Edmond’s. These Bifl Shoes Were Destined For The Dumpster But I Was Able To Bring Them Back To Life. The Dye Color Is Uneven Between The Left And Right, But I’m Just Gonna Let It Bug Me For A While Until I Get Around To Fixing It
Allen Edmonds is the bomb. In the 90s, I bought a pair, wore them for years, then sent them in for their reconditioning service. A couple of weeks later, I get a package delivered. Inside is a brand new pair of Allen Edmonds shoes with a note. The note says that, upon inspection, they noted a flaw and determined the pair that I had worn for years should never have been sold. They said they hoped the brand new pair would suffice for the "inconvenience"! :-)
That would actually bother me. If I send a beloved pair in to get made pretty, I would want THAT one back, not some substitute. Glad it worked out for you, but I'd be seriously upset
Load More Replies...A friend was just about to toss his knee-high biker boots because he deemed them beyond repair. I brought them to my local cobbler who performed a miracle for a fraction of what a new pair would cost.
A. The original shoes color is off so you have to expect the color blemish. B. It’ provides character through the whole perfect imperfection.
Don't colour correct. It's part of their character, and is probably natural variation :)
It doesn´t matter if the colour is uneven - leather is a living/natural material. Lots of leather products, like suitcases, have areas in darker/lighter shades - it´s only natural.
I get paid over $90 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I'be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Here's what I've been doing.......☛ http://www.jobget6.com
The experiment involved 2,917 participants from 5 European countries (Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Spain and the Netherlands).
"We designed a fake shopping website, which consumers could use just as if it were Amazon or ASOS," the researchers wrote. The participants, however, did not know the site was fake. "Once they had checked out their shopping basket, participants were directed to a questionnaire which gauged various socio-economic and psycho-social indicators."
My Grandmothers Wedgewood Oven. At Least 70 Yrs Old
Chef here - I took over a place in about 1994 where the 6 burner oven was enamelled cast iron and heat resistant Cotton (possibly Asbestos mix) seals, it could be dismantled right down to where the gas pipe was without using any tools. Never leaked, came up to heat really quickly, cooked evenly regardless of where you placed food in the oven and was a thing of beauty being made in fetching shades of blue and white. It was made in 1924 - 70+ years. I left it there when I sold the business and as far as I know it's still there !!
I've never had an oven window that was clear enough to see how cooked the food is anyways, I always need to crack the top and peek in.
I don't like that there is no glass in the oven though! Not good for baking when you cannot open all the time to check
I agree - I love being able to check my cakes. Opening a door at the wrong stage can be very bad for baking.

It's great to teach your kids useful staff no matter the gender! Not many fathers would do that with their sons! Great job
You're right. Kids do need to know useful stuff. My son can sew, cook, and even can what he grows in his garden. He also does electrical, plumbing, and automotive work around the house.
Load More Replies...My grandmother was a professional seamstress. She taught my dad how to sew. He made all his spending money in the Navy by sewing patches and mending uniforms for his fellow sailors.
After WWII, they surveyed infantry soldiers... When asked what was the most useful survival skill, sewing was the number one answer. Each infantryman was issued a sewing kit, along with the other necessities. In war, a hole in your sock can be deadly.
My mother still has the Husqvarna she bought before leaving Sweden in the 60s. That era's machines were purely mechanical, as were earlier ones, so they go forever.

These Russian Valenki Felted Wool Boots, Made Entirely Out Of Hardened Wool That Served Me So Well Here In Texas In Ver The Past Couple Days. No Soles, No Form, Basically Like Wearing Snow Proof 2 Inch Thick Hard Wool Socks. Had Them For 5 Years, No Sign Of Wear
Yeah valenki are great, but they don't do well right around freezing because they do suck up slush. The Germans sure wished they had valenki in WWII. Their stupid alternative looked like giant Herman Munster boots. There are some great pics of the Soviet soldiers trying them on and laughing at how horrible they were ERpmmBrWoA...c5f84e.jpg
"they do suck up slush" that‘s why we also have such thing as kaloshi. they are simple rubber boots wearing over valenky to prevent them from soaking 2c724ac0b4...badfdc.jpg
Oh I have these and had them 3 years until moved away from Finland, then my mom has used them pass 5 years. Apperently as a kid I had once that my cousin and my brother used before me and they got then second hand. After me they went to next happy owner. You can get sole to then and change it aswell, when they last forever basically. Just not suitable to vet weather.
It’s a bummer that the ones Sorrel makes as liners for their duck boots suck, mine did not last two seasons!!
Boot liners and Valenki are not the same. Valenki don't require any outer cover if its below freezing
Load More Replies...These are "huopatossut" in Finnish. We used to have several pairs, as my grandfather used to work in the factory that made them. Awesome for Finnish winters! I also had a pair with rubber soles so a bit of a slushy snow was not a problem.

Load More Replies...I have this exact same mixer - same color and everything. Gran got it new in 1958 I think. I inherited it and still use it 2-3x per week. It's a trooper!
My grandmother bought hers over 50 years ago - its still going strong and the new adaptors still fit!
I still use the mixer I got 40 years ago but my cell phone broke after a week and my car broke down at 16,000 miles. If we made stuff that was sturdy and repairable, all the people making the crap could retrain to be repairpersons. I don't need my phone to be an eighth of a second faster downloading videos; I want it to actually make a phone call when I need to.
The results showed that if shoppers had information on product lifespan, they would choose to buy longer-lasting items: on average, a product's sales increased by 56% if its lifetime was longer than that of its competitors.
Of the products tested, purchases of suitcases (+128%) and printers (+70%) were influenced the most by this change.

I still use mine every day, and it has my entire music collection, audiobooks, and podcasts all in one place and available at all times. In my opinion, the finest piece of hardware Apple ever produced - so naturally they pulled the plug on it. To this day, no-one has produced its equal, because everyone has been suckered into believing streaming that you pay for but never own is somehow better.
I must OWN my music, that's why I have some cubic meters of vinyls, CD's and even cassettes! I also own my 5 TB of FLAC albums and 1080 .mkv movies...
Load More Replies...I don't find Spotify so very convenient. It is 120€/ year that I don't really need to spend and I need broadband reception. And if you are into classical music: good luck finding the specific Bach recording from an Eastern European orchestra that doesn't rush through the piece like the house is on fire.
I just use the free Spotify. I'm definitely not paying for it. Also Pandora is great for free (if you don't mind short adds, same with Spot.). Not to mention whatever free music/podcast service your phone has, along with all of the other things together: phone, addresses, notes, streaming TV services, internet, calculator etc etc. So, the convenience is having everything in one place, your phone.

It sometimes glitches when charging and I’ve had to do a hard shut-down, reformat a number of times, but otherwise has been problem-free. Yup I still use mine every day.... It stays plugged into my car and I have it for my commute
I am positive yours was defective. I have all of the first iPods, all of them still hold charge for weeks. Once I forgot to stop the music when I got home. 2 weeks later I pick it up and hear music. The battery was at 60%. The iPod was the one with touch screen.

"Suitcases are the quintessential roaming product, giving them two characteristics which makes the consumer rank lifetime as a priority: the trials of transport make resilience a key factor, and any item used solely for travel will be brought out only occasionally. If it is used rarely, the consumer has every reason to hope it will last a long time," the researchers explained.
"As for printers, they have one of the shortest lifetimes of all household electronic goods, and people buy them because they need them, not for pleasure – two more good reasons why we would want them to last."
Sales of smartphones were among the least affected by displaying their lifetime (+41%).

Man, all these posts are making me think of my dad. My husband walked in with a jacket like this on and it has the sheep skin on the inside. I think some don't understand that many modern seeds can be planted, but the seeds harvested from the vegetables won't germinate because they want you to keep buying seeds every year. With heirloom varieties, the seeds you harvest will germinate.
Load More Replies...Pearl, no one has commented, because no one understands what this post means!
Do you take the bottom 1/3rd leaves off and deep plant so the soil line is bone the removed leaf areas? I ask because it’s a trick I learned, that removed leaf area will produce roots, allowing for a more deeply plant plant, which means less frequent watering and more drought tolerance…just curious
No GMOs in them either. No one’s monkeyed with their DNA. Real tomatoes.
Well, people did lots of GMO [then named cross pollination and crossing varieties] from Aztec times on those. You clearly have no idea how GMO works
Load More Replies...Same here just Cherokee Purple tomatoes. Also have over 15 varieties of heirloom beans that have been in the family for multiple generations. Some of them are very rare or hard to find now but produce the best flavors I've found!

Just Got Done Detailing My Grandpa's 1971 Schwinn Racer! These Bikes Were Built For Life That's For Sure!
I had a Peugot 18 speed racer that I loved . . . until a driver sitting in a parked car decided to open the car door without checking the side mirror. I had just lost 100 lbs. riding it getting ready to enlist in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Even though I was catapulted into oncoming traffic, I was lucky to only receive a concussion.
I'm still riding the Schwinn bike I got at age 12. I have my "old fogey card" now, so my bike is about 55 years old and still adding up the miles.
Such policy changes might reflect in r/BuyItForLife's number of posts. I'm half-joking, of course, but the members of the subreddit can definitely give you valuable insight when choosing your next purchase.

I have a pair of Frye Harness 12R that are more than 20 years old. Resoled once. Wore them for welding, fashion, daily, etc. Still look great. Never regret buying quality!
I'm assuming the holidays are to cold places if they wear these! plus If I paid $350 for a pair of boots I'd want them to last forever!
Just taught my teen this lesson. Waited for sales and used birthday AND Christmas money to buy a beautiful pair that can be used for the rest of her life.
40 Years Of Laundry. My Parents Bought This In 1980 When They First Got Married. It's Also Live A Life As A Pretend Boat And Turtle Shell When I Was Little. It's In Great Condition And I'm So Happy To Be Giving It More Life
Sure, was a turtle shell when you were little, you totally don't still use it for that now and again as an adult.
I have a similar basket but it's heavy wicker. My son (42 now) learned how to sit up in it, holding onto the sides and grinning like a champion. Still used regularly for laundry.
A plastic laundry basket made it through 40 years of use? That's got to be a first.
When my husband and I moved into our apartment, he brought his baby blue Rubbermaid laundry hamper. His parents bought it before he was even born. It's beginning to show its age but it can still take laundry related beatings very well.
My 1965 Gillette Slim Adjustable - Built Like A Tank!
I love a safety razor, takes some practice but less blades works better for me. You can also get about a bajillion replacement blades for the cost of 3 replacement cartridges
Agreed. I buy a hundred blades for less than $20. That's almost two years of shaving.
Load More Replies...As an older owner of facial hair I see the trend going back to these classic "tanks" . On E-bay the prices are getting Super high
They sell them at CVS and Walgreens. You can get one for around $30. Mine was $30 and I have owned it for 7 years. Super cheap when the alternative is spending $15 - $20 every other week on disposables.
Load More Replies...I have one that belonged to my father, it probably dates back to the late 1940's.
I'm a woman and use a safety razor (Edwin Jagger pearl ladies) and they're fab! Very few nicks and cuts - I genuinely had more cuts from disposable razors. I also use a wooden shaving bowl, soap and brush. Feels fancy and means I'm not buying shaving foam and it lasts a lot longer.
Things made today are disposible garbage. Thing made back in the day were built to last.
If you know how to use those it shave so close. Seriously love those, broke one, one got stolen by my ex, got one confiscated (my bad did not knew that a safe razor is not ok in psychiatry).
Looks a lot like mine that I stole from my dad in the 80s and he had for a long time.
Yikes! My sisters and I were given one of those as teens, and I once sliced my leg when the handle wasn't screwed on tight enough!

The Legendary 90’s Toyota Land Cruiser. 24 Years Old And Only Needs Routine Maintenance
I am soooooo jealous. I would own one but can not justify its earth destroying crappy gas mileage
Do you think the price of gas used in a car like this has more or less impact on the environment than from the materials used in building a new car that most people replace within 5-7 years?
Load More Replies...I had a Toyota truck that lasted me 17 years, but in finally rusted out. Motor ran fine, drive train was fine, only the body went. Maybe that's kind of like me?
I had one from 94. Indestructible. Mediocre mileage but unstoppable. Neither rain, nor snow, nor ice.....nor sand nor mud... after 285,000 miles, sold it for $6k and it is still going.
This at least looks like it's been doing what it was built for. Dig the snorkel.
Any Toyota truck or Land Cruiser will never die. Look up "top gear destroying hilux" on Youtube and you'll see why. Had 20-odd years of life as a farm truck, smashed into various walls, left in the British Channel for 12 hours, set on fire, caravan dropped on it, ran through a shed, and it STILL LIVED with only a bit of tape and a wrench.
What amazes me about these vehicles is that they aren't stationary unlike most of the things on this list, and gets subject to an enormous amount of vibrations as well. Testament to Toyota reliability.
