We used to be people of repair and resourcefulness, taking pride in our ability to tinker with the longevity of our things. But nowadays? Not so much. We may try to recycle, but as soon as something breaks we're looking for a replacement. Luckily, our ingenuity can match our laziness.

The subreddit r/BuyItForLife has 973k members and it's dedicated to practical quality products that were made to last. Like a phone from 2006. Or a sewing machine from the early 20th century!

The person who founded this online community, u/Petrarch1603, got the inspiration for it from r/ShutUpandTakeMyMoney. "I noticed that sometimes [it featured] useful products that I was interested in buying. Unfortunately, I also noticed a lot of gimmicks and cheaply made products too," they explained.

Now, r/BuyItForLife is twice the size of its predecessor. I guess people really appreciate pristine craftsmanship!

I have an expensive bike, too. I figure it's paid for itself in health, fun, and gas saved when I use it to run errands.

Absolutely. Not sure I'd agree with a bike being 'ephemeral' as they describe it - like most things they last if you look after them.

I don’t get why anyone would object to purchasing a bicycle…ever. They are very environmentally friendly, great form of exercise (not too hard on the body)and can be used in so many terrains! Good on you

I think maybe it was more about the cost of the bike. There is a wide range of prices from a few hundred up to thousands. A basic bike will get you around town, but a bike with a better, lighter frame and high quality parts will last longer, give you less hassle, and be more pleasant to ride.

I'm still riding the Schwinn bike I got at age 12. I have my "old fogey card," meaning my bike is about 55 years old and still adding up the miles.

A "century" is 100 miles. A double century is a grueling 200-mile endurance cycling event. People cycle for 12 to 15 hours a day to complete the route. South Africa is hosting their Old Mutual Wealth DC at the end of November. You've got plenty of time to prepare... jk

Mine's a bit newer, the initial slant needle design from the early 50s. It has an electric motor, but it's largely mechanical. The case is metal, all the drive parts and gearing are metal. It's a beast, but it's quite easy to do maintenance on. I don't have any of the attachments Grandma used to have. No idea where they ended up. They're quite fascinating, though. They all ran off the motion of the needle going up and down. They have some pretty intense mechanical ingenuity to accomplish things like decorative stitching, ruffling, rolled hems, etc. I've spent more time than I would've thought possible looking at YouTube videos of their workings.

I needed to replace some of the gears on my other half's 1970's singer - it took me quite some time to work out that there are such things as imperial Allen keys and this was why my metric ones wouldn't fit! It was only when she told me just how old it was, I realised.

Our loyal readers might remember our first piece on r/BuyItForLife. However, people have made plenty of cool posts on the subreddit since then so we felt like a follow-up was necessary too.

Plus, this time we reached out to the people running the sub and one of the moderators was kind enough to have a little chat with us. We also asked the moderator what they think allows some of these items to persevere for as long as they do. "I'm not an expert by any means but I think there are a few factors," they said.

"Most products are built to be as cheap as possible .... and poorly assembled (maybe partly due to planned obsolescence but mostly just due to the fact that people in general like spending less). The products that you see lasting longer are often made of higher quality material and care when built. But they're also priced accordingly."

Try mint, it's actually an infestant herb. If you don't keep it in a vase it will cover all the soil available, i've seen it even grown in a crack on a wall. On the upside it smels good and keeps pests away.

I feel that oregano is a blessing somehow. Dunno why but I like the possible 'eternity' of it 🌱 I grew a chili plant once that someone had tossed away into the trash. It was one of those £5/$5 novelty seeds-in-a-box gifts you find in bookstores. Felt sorry for it and perhaps because I was unemployed at the time, thought that if I rescued it, someone in turn would rescue me. Anyway it grew from a seed in a damp pad of cotton wool on my bedroom window into a plant that bore flowers and chilli peppers. It got so large I eventually gave it to a garden centre as it became home to aphids and was too large for my small flat/apartment. Giving it away I felt sad but proud like (I'm gonna say it) a parent. I loved that plant. I'd like to think cuttings from that tiny seed that someone threw away is taking root and growing. It's been the only plant I've ever been able to grow and I don't think I'll ever forget it.

But choosing longer-lasting products can be tricky. The price doesn't always tell the full story. A few years ago, The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) published an interesting study, carried out by the University of Southern Brittany, the Sircome agency, and the University of Southern Bohemia.

Its main goal was to see whether displaying a product's lifespan would influence a consumer's decision to purchase. In other words, would we choose the same products if we had this information?

Quality writing implements fall into the hands of people who value and appreciate them and accordingly care for them accordingly. I have "venerable" Parker pens and a Cross pen and pencil that look brand-new and act like it as well.

It sadly depends. I have the one on the picture (I think - maybe a few years younger) and it's fantastic. Holds hot drinks without a problem for 24 hrs and over (it's still HOT after 24, warm for longer). My friend has a Stanley in black - doesn't even keep warm for 24 hrs :-( We tested it - my tea was still so hot you could burn your skin, hers was lukewarm at best.

Allen Edmonds is the bomb. In the 90s, I bought a pair, wore them for years, then sent them in for their reconditioning service. A couple of weeks later, I get a package delivered. Inside is a brand new pair of Allen Edmonds shoes with a note. The note says that, upon inspection, they noted a flaw and determined the pair that I had worn for years should never have been sold. They said they hoped the brand new pair would suffice for the "inconvenience"! :-)

It doesn´t matter if the colour is uneven - leather is a living/natural material. Lots of leather products, like suitcases, have areas in darker/lighter shades - it´s only natural.

The experiment involved 2,917 participants from 5 European countries (Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Spain and the Netherlands).

"We designed a fake shopping website, which consumers could use just as if it were Amazon or ASOS," the researchers wrote. The participants, however, did not know the site was fake. "Once they had checked out their shopping basket, participants were directed to a questionnaire which gauged various socio-economic and psycho-social indicators."

Chef here - I took over a place in about 1994 where the 6 burner oven was enamelled cast iron and heat resistant Cotton (possibly Asbestos mix) seals, it could be dismantled right down to where the gas pipe was without using any tools. Never leaked, came up to heat really quickly, cooked evenly regardless of where you placed food in the oven and was a thing of beauty being made in fetching shades of blue and white. It was made in 1924 - 70+ years. I left it there when I sold the business and as far as I know it's still there !!

After WWII, they surveyed infantry soldiers... When asked what was the most useful survival skill, sewing was the number one answer. Each infantryman was issued a sewing kit, along with the other necessities. In war, a hole in your sock can be deadly.

Yeah valenki are great, but they don't do well right around freezing because they do suck up slush. The Germans sure wished they had valenki in WWII. Their stupid alternative looked like giant Herman Munster boots. There are some great pics of the Soviet soldiers trying them on and laughing at how horrible they were ERpmmBrWoA...c5f84e.jpg ERpmmBrWoAcsysA-613b186c5f84e.jpg

I still use the mixer I got 40 years ago but my cell phone broke after a week and my car broke down at 16,000 miles. If we made stuff that was sturdy and repairable, all the people making the crap could retrain to be repairpersons. I don't need my phone to be an eighth of a second faster downloading videos; I want it to actually make a phone call when I need to.

The results showed that if shoppers had information on product lifespan, they would choose to buy longer-lasting items: on average, a product's sales increased by 56% if its lifetime was longer than that of its competitors.

Of the products tested, purchases of suitcases (+128%) and printers (+70%) were influenced the most by this change.

I still use mine every day, and it has my entire music collection, audiobooks, and podcasts all in one place and available at all times. In my opinion, the finest piece of hardware Apple ever produced - so naturally they pulled the plug on it. To this day, no-one has produced its equal, because everyone has been suckered into believing streaming that you pay for but never own is somehow better.

I don't find Spotify so very convenient. It is 120€/ year that I don't really need to spend and I need broadband reception. And if you are into classical music: good luck finding the specific Bach recording from an Eastern European orchestra that doesn't rush through the piece like the house is on fire.

I just use the free Spotify. I'm definitely not paying for it. Also Pandora is great for free (if you don't mind short adds, same with Spot.). Not to mention whatever free music/podcast service your phone has, along with all of the other things together: phone, addresses, notes, streaming TV services, internet, calculator etc etc. So, the convenience is having everything in one place, your phone.

I LOVE my 2006 iPod — amazing battery life, great for sport/exercise because the volume and controls can be used without looking at it or swiping in on the touch models, my 60 GB model is only just under half full — even with 3300 songs on it. It sometimes glitches when charging and I’ve had to do a hard shut-down, reformat a number of times, but otherwise has been problem-free. Someone would have to pry it out of my cold, dead hand before I gave it up.

Docs are fine for fashion but they’re rubbish for work boots. I wore out a pair in an industrial kitchen in 4 months. After that I bought a pair of German Para boots from the Army Surplus shop. That was 30 years ago and after various dirty jobs and some very messy festivals they’re still waterproof 😎

Dreamt of owning a pair of these for DECADES and finally bought some, mid 90s . . . . . . unfortunately my experience was not a happy one, very uncomfortable. Don't know why but someone suggested that the build quality had declined since the 80s.

If it is used rarely, the consumer has every reason to hope it will last a long time," the researchers explained.

"As for printers, they have one of the shortest lifetimes of all household electronic goods, and people buy them because they need them, not for pleasure – two more good reasons why we would want them to last."

My daughter found my old jean jacket from the 80's with the huge Motorhead back patch. It took years before she finally brought that back 🤣 A few years later, my middle son found my old leather metalhead jacket and wore it to school. Apparently his classmates thought it was awesome. Maybe I'll let him use my old Doc Martins or checkered vans next?

Man, all these posts are making me think of my dad. My husband walked in with a jacket like this on and it has the sheep skin on the inside. He was like, "I have no idea who's jacket this is but it is mine now." I told him it was my dad's and I grabbed it from his apartment after he died. Jacket went right back into the closet. Shame, in perfect condition and the husband looked nice in it.

80% of participants felt that the manufacturers were very to extremely responsible with regard to providing information about a product's lifetime.

"All these findings argue for legislation on product lifetime," the research team said. "There is no doubt that the reliability of the products purchased is important to consumers. The study showed that regulatory information would steer customers when purchasing products."

4 years and they are silicone... That’s not really that remarkable. I have silicone spatulas that are 3 or 4 times that old. But nice “Green brag”.

I have had these Cross pens for decades, but can’t use them anymore. The pens lasted and lasted, but my aging writing hand can’t grip these comfortably anymore because they are so slender. I will pass them on to the next generation, who will likely have the same long-term experience.

I think some don't understand that many modern seeds can be planted, but the seeds harvested from the vegetables won't germinate because they want you to keep buying seeds every year. With heirloom varieties, the seeds you harvest will germinate.

Do you take the bottom 1/3rd leaves off and deep plant so the soil line is bone the removed leaf areas? I ask because it’s a trick I learned, that removed leaf area will produce roots, allowing for a more deeply plant plant, which means less frequent watering and more drought tolerance…just curious

I had a Peugot 18 speed racer that I loved . . . until a driver sitting in a parked car decided to open the car door without checking the side mirror. I had just lost 100 lbs. riding it getting ready to enlist in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Even though I was catapulted into oncoming traffic, I was lucky to only receive a concussion.

I'm a woman and use a safety razor (Edwin Jagger pearl ladies) and they're fab! Very few nicks and cuts - I genuinely had more cuts from disposable razors. I also use a wooden shaving bowl, soap and brush. Feels fancy and means I'm not buying shaving foam and it lasts a lot longer.

I also live in an old house, built in 1957. They reused old materials (post war era was rough..) so beams in my house are at least 200 years old.

Any Toyota truck or Land Cruiser will never die. Look up "top gear destroying hilux" on Youtube and you'll see why. Had 20-odd years of life as a farm truck, smashed into various walls, left in the British Channel for 12 hours, set on fire, caravan dropped on it, ran through a shed, and it STILL LIVED with only a bit of tape and a wrench.

What amazes me about these vehicles is that they aren't stationary unlike most of the things on this list, and gets subject to an enormous amount of vibrations as well. Testament to Toyota reliability.

At what point did manufacturers say to themselves 'You know what? If we start making things out of shitty materials and cheap parts, those schmucks will have to keep replacing them. Profits! Bonuses for all executives! Happy shareholders! Whee!' (To be fair, I think kitchenaid doesn't fall into this category: my ex wife had one she'd had for 30 years)

aw man....my first car was a '93 BMW 325is....i got it with 35k on it. When it finally gave up and needed a new engine, the odometer was at 466k. I miss that car even though I've had several brand new since then, I still remember the awesome solo cross-country road trips I took in it.

Reminds me of my dad´s VEF radio from end of 1980s in Estonia - he even drowned them into bathtub a couple of times - new batteries in and some scrubbing of the contacts of the odd roller inside which showed the channels and it was good to go. Only the UKW? frequencies were stopped and we couldn´t use it with AM/FM radio channels anymore. No idea what happened to it. Dad used to listen to Radio Luxembourg with it despite soviet scramblers/distorters (1600km/1000 miles away from) :D

It is a little scary looking at this. I do love how the old one look and work, but watching curious children and animals around fans, this really makes me cringe....

I have an ashtray and two huge beach towels from that campaign too. Save the upcs an mailed in for stuff. I got more items too from them back in the 90s. Best one was I won the 100 cds drawing and got music catalogues from all the publishers. CDs were like $16 a pc then. And a 100 free?? I was giving collections to people. Bowie? Beatles? Weird al? Still have tons. Oh the towels are super huge. Not faded and still use on beach trips.

That depends on what you want. Rolled steel preforms as well, but doesn't retain heat as well. But the up to ten times lower price tag evens that out.

You would think so, but no. A popping cycle is too quick to melt butter in there. It serves as a measuring cup to ensure you don't exceed the maximum amount of corn.

It's pack meant to live on your back for months at a time with everything you could possibly need while you're in the woods...quite worth the typical $400usd+ they usually run, if you're a serious backpacker! Yes, expensive for just a backpack. But just a backpack it is not! And osprey will repair your items literally for life.
