30 Times When People Received Hate For The Weirdest Things Ever, As Shared In This Online Community
Michael Corleone once said in The Godfather 3: "Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgment." If you change "enemies" to "people" in this quote, then you get, perhaps, perfect advice for behavior in any society. The problem is that no matter how perfect the advice is, few people really follow it.
In fact, people love to hate and express their hatred - even if this feeling is fleeting, and tomorrow they will forget what or whom they hated. Often behind this hatred is just fear. Fear of what seems too different from the usual things, of opinions that are incomprehensible, of decisions that one does not share. So hatred is incredibly often expressed for reasons that are not really worth a damn.
Recently, a thread appeared in the AskReddit community, where a topic starter asked just one question: "What is the dumbest thing you've ever received hate for?" Right now, the thread has nearly 19K upvotes and about 15.5K comments with tales ranging from funny and absurd to bitter and hurtful.
Bored Panda compiled for you a selection of the most popular comments from this thread, a real quintessence of human stupidity, proof that one can literally hurt a person just for nothing. So read these stories, scroll to the very end, share your opinions in the comments... and please try to just love, and not hate!

Not me, but my husband. He has a fondness for BRIGHT NEON COLORS. Which is so opposite to his quiet, reserved personality that it tickles me to death.
So, he came home from work. We spent an hour of, “No, what do YOU want for dinner?” He ran and threw some non-work clothes on… NEON YELLOW-GREEN shirt and navy shorts and his NEON ORANGE sneakers and ran to get takeout. The lady in front of him in line, turned around, looked my husband up and down, and proceeded to excoriate him for his choice of clothing: How on earth could he go out in public like that? What was he thinking? That doesn’t match at all! Those colors are insulting and his wife should be ashamed of herself for letting him dress like that!
My husband, who is normally so polite, looked HER up and down and told her he could change clothes, but she’d always be an ugly b***h. I was SO proud of him! Though he may have had to convince me to not go driving to find this woman so I could punch her in the nose. 🤣
Having a very old , sick cat put to sleep instead of just letting her slowly die. She had stopped eating and wouldn't move. She just sat in the same spot dying. I took her to thr vet and we wound up euthanizing her.
Apparently I am an evil b***h for not just letting her starve herself to death.
She was 15 years old.
I painted my nursery with an under the sea theme and then was told the blue would make my daughter a lesbian.
"Reading too much" my mom used to get mad at me, an elementary school kid, for going to the library and getting a big stack of books and reading through them all in a day. And I mean she was PISSED, she'd kick me out to go play and I would just sit outside in the grass for a few hours and wait to go back to reading lol
I got in trouble for bringing books into the primary school canteen because the teachers said I should be "engaging with other people, not sitting with my face stuck in a book." Ma'am, I've been engaging with people all day in the classroom? I'd like some time to myself, please? There's also the fact that no one would sit with me so who was I supposed to engage with in the canteen?
Not being able to have children. A guy took it upon himself to “introduce” me to concepts such as IVF and surrogacy. When I told him those wouldn’t work, he basically told me, “well, it’s no wonder you have no children if you won’t even consider the most basic of options.”
My eggs work perfectly fine, as far as I know. But pregnancy would literally kill me, and I’m on life-saving medications that would cause severe birth defects. But f**k me, amirite? Just a choosy beggar, a wannabe victim.
ETA before someone tells me “just adopt/get a cat” because *someone always does,* you’re not nearly as helpful as you think you are.
I don't drink alcohol, not preachy about it, I just don't like the taste or the effect.
I get this all the time. I actually have a very strong skin reaction to alcohol, I can't even have chocolates with alcohol, yet people get really upset by it. I've been called a child. Ironically, by a low-key alcoholic.
For putting pink or pastel rainbow fleeces in with my male guinea pigs. They’re guinea pigs…they literally don’t care. They want lettuce.
For not being gay enough. Apparently having sex with guys doesn't make you gay. You also have to mirror whatever the gay club's current fashions are, down to acting like a diva with an attitude problem to be accepted.
Gay sex with gay guys is not gay enough. Did you even go to see Gay! The Gay Musical?
Yup I've been accused of this too, because instead of dancing, knowing how to do fashion, going out to clubs etc.. im a gamer, whose idea of a fun time is to sit at home, read a book, and kill some people in fire emblem, so apparently im not "gay enough" even though your going out to the clubs to look for guys, and I'm married so I have a perm one at home with no effort 🤣🤣
there's a weird attitude about being bisexual. kind of you're not really gay or you are confused. it's like you have to pick a team. it's called loving people for who they are and not what they are. it's not a team sport.
I've actually had to file complaints about lesbians who are bi-phobic to queer women in relationships with men. The women will claim that the bi women are "performing heteronormativity" and are "taking away queer spaces." I can't believe I have to actually f*****g protest for bi people to have equal rights *to actual gay people* but here we are. Guess what, queer people? Even if someone else isn't queer like how you are queer, they're still queer, too! F**k gatekeeping.
Load More Replies...As I bi person in a straight relationship (I'm a trans guy dating a cis girl) my friends tease me for being the "token straight"
Been married to a cis guy for nearly 20 years - according to the LGBTQ society at work I can’t claim to be bisexual because of that. It’s just daft how they think.
Load More Replies...Pansexual woman.....told not to fly my pride flag because I married a man LMAO
I feel you. I'm bi but was told not to say that when I was with a woman for 3 years whitch made me a lesbian. And I apparently became hetero now that my partner is a man. Who is allowed to be bi then?
Load More Replies...Ugh... as a bi woman, I have been told I'm not really bi because I married a man. I knew I wanted to go into the ministry... I knew being openly bi would ruin all that. I went out with women. I had HUGE crushes. But I ended up falling for a man. Been in a loving relationship for over 18 yrs (married for 12). Why is that a bad thing? I don't care these days about who knows I'm bi, but things were very different just 20 yrs ago. And I love my husband. We have a great life. And he accepts that I'm bi.
I kind of feel that way about the increasing number of flags meant to mean even more specific groups. I thought the whole basis of the flag being a rainbow was because it was supposed to mean all the colors of the rainbow, or everything under the sky? You know, everyone.
Yup...failed the gay test long ago, never got my gay membership card, never invited to the gay meetings; officially unwelcome in the alphabet mafia :D
And on the other hand, you have the segment of the gay community who fetishize the hyper-masculine "straight-acting" image. It's all nonsense. Date who you want to date; act how you want to act. As long as you're not hurting anyone, who's business is it, anyway?
There are a lot of men out there that are gay and you would never have a clue by looking at them or talking to them.
Hmmm you don't sound very gay to me. Do you know all the words to Rent? Own a bedazzler? I need more weird proof.
***sarcasm dripping*** Your pet Unicorn DIDN'T fart enough sparkly rainbows today? Some people will never get it!
Gay gate keepers, wonderful. These days it's about being yourself, and individual made up of your own wants, needs, and preferences. Gate keepers are insecure about themselves. Be who you are.
They're called "Gatekeepers", and once you discover that *every* marginalized group has a boatload of these self-appointed guardians of the cause, it becomes easier and easier to just shower them with indifference.
I hesr ya bro. I’m obscenely obese, and am constantly taunted every time I walk into a McDonald’s.
Is this what a straight person said to you, or is this toxic idea being pushed by people in the community?
Sadly, there is discrimination and gatekeeping going on within the LGBTQA+ community. Gays not being gay enough. Bisexuals getting hate for passing as straight because they date the opposite sex and not having suffered as much for their rights, asexuals being told they don't belong, lesbians claiming corrective rape only happens to them.
Load More Replies...I hear that a lot from my gay friends...that the get s**t in their community for not being "gay" enough or when my bi friends are ostracized when they happen to be dating the opposite sex.
It seems it doesn't really matter whether your strait, bi, gay, lesbian, or, or, or, or. Your either a decent person, or a Karen. Someone is either happy with their life or judgemental asswholes.
Lots of husband's have sex with other dudes, I could not believe how many offers I had in 30 years in the military and overseas they actually would hook up with other dudes in the showers at night and had Craigslist personal ads for each FOB, we called it tour gay but no thanks my hand did a great job when away from home.
I've heard it can be like this. Sorry. I'd say you're committed enough, don't worry about 'proving' it any further
Dude thats the s**t that gives bad rep to gay men, behaving like f*****g histéric divas, ffs you want to be a woman get a reasigment surgery, you're gay ok, but you're still a f*****g man.
For talking to a guy I met on a dating site not knowing he was in a relationship.
Dude was messaging me on a dating app, we met up and he seemed cool. We hung out once, he wasn’t my type and we parted on good terms and then his fiancé called me.
I said I was sorry, I had no idea. I stopped talking to the guy instantly but I still faced 6-8 months of harassment from this woman and her friends. I got told I wouldn’t live to see my next birthday, I got told I was fat and a s**t, they called me non stop they said that they knew where I lived, where I went to uni.. I even got threats on my blog that I had set up for uni. It was intense. I ended up getting the police involved.
From what I know she stayed with him but somehow I was in the wrong even though I had no idea she existed. He did nothing wrong, it was all me…f*****g ridiculous.
Why are people always taking it out on the other person? They usually don't know they're work someone in a relationship, and even they do, it's not nice but they didn't promise you anything. Your partner did
Being introvert. Got a looooooooooot of hate for that.
A lot of people automatically assume that introverts are snobbish or arrogant just because they are quiet. I think they take it as a personal insult when an introvert is not all that interested in engaging.
Being a boy and liking horse riding. It's a frickin hobby people?
For having lunch with my grandma on my lunch break at work. Not joking. I serve a wide area of my state and when I’m in her part of the state, which was historically underserved by the person in my position before I was, I eat lunch with her during my lunch break. The other administrators I work with in parts of the state that I serve are now complaining that the only reason that part of the state is getting more attention (ie. Equal treatment to them rather than being neglected) is because I like to have lunch with my grandmother.
So you think it's ok to eat on your lunch break? Seriously? My grandma is in heaven now. Enjoy yours.
For making hot chocolate last year's Christmas some lady was criticizing me for being a adult making hot chocolate saying that's for children.i was having a nice romantic Christmas dinner with my fiance so I wanted to make a Dutch hot chocolate with a chocolate liqueur whipped topping. I just looked at her like she was crazy.
Edit this happened at a store I was telling my fiance what we needed to make dinner and dessert and the lady was eavesdropping. I needed the hot cocoa so we could have cookies and cocoa and watch some Christmas movies together.
During my early days of the internet, there was a post on a livejournal page about some woman who still breastfed her kid until he was like, 5. i commented on it saying “i didn’t even know that was possible” and boy did people come at me. calling me a troll just trying to rile people up, saying it was offensive.. like dude, i was just 15 and honestly had no idea it was possible to breastfeed a child for that long.
Getting the side eye for holding my gfs hand in public (we're interracial).
It's just so silly. It wasn't even someone of our races being all "stop stealing our people." It was another minority!
Video games back when I was a teen, so about 10-15 years ago.
My parents did not know jack s**t about it, so they chose to tried to squash it out of me instead of understanding it. Sucks when all you want to do on your free time as a teen was play with the boys.
Today I am still very much a gamer, and they kinda accepted it. Just last week my Mom asked me why I didn't pursue a career in video games because I love it so much.
I simply answered: You never supported my love for it, and since you paid for my college I never thought you would have approved.
The look of guilt and realization on my mother's face was kinda bittersweet.
Few months back, my mum looked disapprovingly at me - mid 40's- settling down some some gaming. She said she couldn't believe I had not grown out of games yet. As she sat there with her Suduko, Wordle, crosswords - and still stopping every few minutes to check out her FB and what's app.
For being 5’9. Someone at work mentioned me being tall for a woman and I said that 5’9 isn’t super tall and they called me a liar and got pissed at me because obviously I was at least six feet tall because he was 5’11 and I’m taller than him. Buddy, I know how tall I am and it ain’t 6’.
For telling someone that I’m allergic to a certain food. (I extremely allergic to it).
How dare you inconvenience someone with your desire to live! What a moron that person was.
Back during the height of the pandemic, I had my kid on the back of my bike. It was a little on the chilly side so he wanted to wear his mask. Some f*****g moron yelled at me that it was child abuse. We were stuck at the lights so he gave me the beans for a red hot minute. Told him I’d consider his parenting advice in the same way I do all the advice I get from crazy people screaming on the street.
Ok, but was he mad at the mask or the bike? The title says bike, but like why was mask mentioned there? Please help I'm confused XD
Scoring good marks in an exam.
In one of my college classes, some fellow students loudly complained (in class with the teacher present) that my high exam scores were "ruining the grading curve for everyone else" My teacher snapped back immediately that they're just mad because it means they need to step up their game and stop phoning it in. She also said to me directly: "Don't ever play dumb just because someone else can't handle it." That is excellent advice!
I don’t like many sweets, I’m more of a carbs and lasagna person.
Try telling people you don’t like cake when it’s offered. Just f*****g try it. It’ll be a 19 minute back and forth where they refuse to believe you, and the 5 variations of “just take a bite”.
I don’t care if this is your nans famous recipe or if this is your personal favorite cake. I’m going to hate it.
Not going to a birthday party.
I know this sounds rude of me, and I did feel bad. But, I had my reasons. Back in high school, my friend was having a birthday party. At the time my dad was really ill, he was in the hospital and I wanted to be by his side.
I told her my reason and that I wouldn’t be able to make it, but once my dad was better, I would celebrate with her in a different way. She didn’t like this, and threw a fit about it.
To this day, I still don’t understand why. But, we’re no longer in contact.
My really good memory. Like, people don't believe it so much that they think I lie and make up things.
Mooooom! He's lying again! Seriously, though, remember not to argue with an idiot. You can't win.
Being a working actor. There’s a whole Reddit thread about how ugly and stupid I am in r/commercialsihate…. Making fun of the way I’m dressed (I didn’t get to pick it out, that’s the wardrobe person), my hair (same, hair person), and how dumb “I” am…someone even said I looked like I was having a stroke. I was literally doing my job.
As a former people pleaser, making my own life choices instead of following others' pushy advice... Life choices that only concern me.
That's called taking responsibility. I rather thought it was a major goal.
Not me but my dad. So my dad used to have trouble remembering names so he would call people Boss. Some dude went up to him one day and got really mad at this nickname. When my dad asks why the dude no joke says: “Boss backwards means Sorry Son Of a B***h.” And that is the most pathetic cry for attention I’ve ever heard. This was in a bar to so maybe the dude was drunk but still that was a hilarious story.
Edit: I edited for the typo but also to say what my dad did after: he just laughed which further pissed the guy off but he really couldn’t help it. Dude wanted to fight my dad and my dad was just laughing, imagine how embarrassing that would be.
I had explained to someone that nurses are mandatory reporters

I once got threats for having a gaming PC. Because I’m a woman and…apparently that was taking a graphics card away from a ‘proper’ gamer (aka male). Definitely the most bizarre.
I too am a woman gamer. Hearing that almost makes me want to collect graphic cards just for fun.

Strangely enough it was on here for Thanking an American pilot for his service, i've never seen so much hate from other people
Made a joke once that referenced America, got jumped on by the 'Murican populace of BP for being part of the supposed Anti American hate group that exists on BP. The joke did not even insult America, it made reference to it. Got some love from the American's that understood the joke and also understand the cross cultural banter and taking the p!ss that exists between countries on BP.
On an online game I was playing, someone shamed me for not answering a question. They started spamming the chat wanting to know my name, age, address, etc., And apparently if I didn't answer, I would be a fat ugly bald black 60 year old man, that spent all of my time playing that game because I didn't have a life. The one thing they didn't know was that I was an admin...
For knowing the names of "unusual" plants and flowers. It was on a Girls scouts jamboree, I was a (quite bratty) leader's kid but took part in most activities with the scouts that were 2-3 years older than me. One of the activities included listing plants and flowers found in the neighbouring fields and woods. Most got somewhere between five and fifteen plants, we (I) got close to fifty. The reason I knew so many flowers was that I used to hang around with my grandmother and I "collected" nice sounding words like latin names
That brought back memories of o level biology. A lot of wild plants pressed and identified etc. in a binder as part of the required practical. 1961. I missed the written exam because i got ill from wandering around the countryside in a heat wave with my friend when there was nothing new in bloom to find. We were reduced to roaming a dehydrated cracked bare field in the end. And that was the best part of biology for me. 😉

With you being a female you should know and understand that you should never ask another woman about kids because you don't know their health. She hasn't spoken to me since 😆.
I was the relief carrier (T-6) for this one guy. He HATED me AND WOULD NOT LET ME KNOW WHY! Turns out, the costumers committed to him how I delivered the mail so much earlier than him and it drove him crazy. He would call me b***h, pig ,etc. When I complained to management they told me he can hate who ever he wants. Makes for a shitty work environment.🙄
I was once called a lier and a "showoff" 🤔 for answering why I was so happy by saying I was on my period. 🤷♀️ I don't know why, but before my period I always get in a good mood and are almost silly happy. Not when I'm in pain obviously, but other days. I have never met anyone that feels like that. BUT instead when I ovulates I want to eat lots of sweets and feel sad and depressed. It's weird.
Lol I used to take antidepressant for the 2 days before getting my period and after that I was just happy again, especially the first two weeks, during and after my period.

Oh forgot this one: for buying a 3 bedroom house despite not wanting children. Apparently that’s ‘unfair’.
So many of these are about "gay" things. Where is this handbook of gayness anyway? i don't think I understand the rules.
I get hate from one friend for not wanting to go to every movie she wants to go to. Sorry, I don't care for comic book movies and really I hate the loudness of any movie. I can barely understand the dialogue and have to wear earplugs. And for wanting to go horse riding on my birthday. Something I wanted to do and she didn't.
For saying California is the third largest state. The response was “All you Californian think you’re so much better than everyone. Idaho is waaaaay bigger than California”. And then she acted confused when I was offended.
She's wrong and dumb on TWO counts, even. CA is bigger in both population and physical size.
Load More Replies...For my vocabulary. I got yelled at for 45 minutes for using a word the other person didn't know. Apparently I'm a pretentious m**********r for knowing the word "anodyne" instead of reading the other person's mind for a synonym they knew.
We really need to figure out scripts for dealing with insecure people who project that insecurity all over the rest of us.
Load More Replies...I used to work at after-school programs, mostly for middle school kids. We were getting complaints from parents that kids weren't doing their homework. So we were told by our boss to make sure kids did their homework. So when a kid said they didn't have any, I made them show me their teachers' lists of homework on their schools' sites. Then I got fussed at for being too tough on the kids. I also got fussed at for helping them too much when they needed it. So uh, what's the purpose of our program? If we weren't doing sports with the kids, we weren't good employees. I should've quit trying.
Oh, and at another program, I got fussed at for not engaging with the kids much when watching them... so I started engaging more, then got fussed at for not being able to watch the whole room if I was engaging with them. I really love kids... I loved the jobs.... I hated my bosses.

And yes, a mod did tell me that I was banned for answering a question instead of flaming the asker.
It's true! Guys really do get sensitive about my being 5'10 and claim I'm lying because Mr Dude who's 5'9 wants people to believe he's 6'. My hubby is 5'8 and has no problem. He says he's married to a model and always thrilled when I wear heels
I get hate all the time off my family for having a chronic illness apparently I’m ‘putting it on’ baring in mind I’ve had major brain surgery for my illness. Also due to said brain surgery I struggle with memory loss so I forget to do simple things sometimes which p**s people off.. like I can help it 🤦🏼♀️ Best one is I’ll be better if I loose weight…. Alrighty then Karen… I’ve dealt with this for 9 years but loosing a couple of pounds will make it go away 🤦🏼♀️
I'm sometimes treated like a liar on the internet when I say I'm on both sides of an argument, I'm a very logical person for that kind of situations so I'll always have some way to validate/reject every point (if I really can, not arguments with an obvious winner). Ppl will be like "oh yeah, sure, everyone believes you" and decide were can they put me on the spectrum of the conversation (?)
I am flight attendant and once one of the passengers was screaming at me that it is my job to put stairs to the aircraft (it was one of a greatly understaffed UK airports, so even we've arrived on time, we were waiting for around 50 minutes for the stairs to be brought by GH). I had an attempt to explain him that this is actually an airport responsibility, but guy was highly sure that was my job. Like, he thought I would jump out of the plane and go bring the stairs just because he was mad at me. 😅 I knew that if I would be listening to this for one more minute I would just burst out laughing, and other passengers were laughing already and it made it harder to keep myself. So I just apologized for his experience and walked back to my jumpseat (in the middle of the cabin btw). I heard he was screaming something at my back, but really I couldn't stand it anymore. It's actually normal for me to be accused of something people do not fully understand. Just funny 😅
No...LOL. You're just explaining the "how" of show business. I grew up on stage, my friend. Singing, dancing, acting, auditioning, rehearsing, competing. I get it. And I understand that it is cutthroat. But WHY must a human being sacrifice any part of themselves for the sake of a career? Or more specifically, what gives anyone else the right to take a part of a person's humanity just to make money?
For expecting coworkers to do their friggin' job. Look, you don't need to do anything beyond your job description, and you don't need to be a gung-ho, get-'er-done dynamo, but also don't leave a mess for other people to clean up.
I get a lot of flack for not wanting to drive. I live in a small city with a lot of sprawl and a so so bus service. I have my bus routes planned and manage well. I know how to take a taxi. I won't refuse a lift from someone but am in no way bothered by a slower travel pace. Hubby does drive btw and we have a car I just find other drivers terrifying.

Load More Replies...Got a good two weeks of pm'ed hatred and banned from a question answering subreddit for...answering the question instead of flaming the asker. Flames are against the sub's rules, and the question did need a calm and rational response (which the asker thanked me for doing) so why I got banned for following the rules instead of breaking them I don't know.
