The brain is a truly fantastic thing. The same organ that’s capable of controlling a myriad of passive as well as active bodily functions, comprehending elaborately complex concepts, and providing a unique kind of sentience is also the organ that often slips us a dumb idea. Or two. OK, much more.

But, hey, not all ideas are dumb, despite you thinking so. A curious Twitter user by the name of Bijan asked the internet what’s the dumbest idea people ever had, but are nevertheless convinced it’d still make the world a better place for all.

Well in Australia it is illegal to ask a breastfeeding mother to leave or move elsewhere etc. Doesn't matter if she is feeding in the middle of a shopping centre, a restaurant etc. From my observations, it seems that other women are the ones that complain about breastfeeding in public, a lot more than men do.

All the money that is spent on marketing and advertising saved would make products cheaper, and if the product changes are good, it will sell itself X

Yeah but there are literally thousands of products released every single day, even though majority would be useless for you there might still be something which may certainly improve your life. So advertisement is the only way for you to know it exists.

There goes TV, internet, magazines, newspapers, a big chunk of the printing industry, and many, many jobs. Plus, how do you learn about new products without advertising. I hate the excessive proliferation but it has some good aspects.

I can't believe how unbelievably stupid so many of these are. A 10yr old should intuitively understand why this idea is really dumb. Also, she's saying this on social media. Social media makes its money off advertising. No advertising = no social media so maybe she doesn't get to spread her idiocy. Maybe her idea isn't so bad after all....

I resent the mindfuck to manipulate you into buying something you don’t need, can’t afford, and either will never use or will use but the damn thing falls apart almost immediately. I also don’t like being bombarded with ads I never asked to see. I wouldn’t mind it if informative advertising was on demand—-you only see it when YOU CHOOSE to ask about a specific product, or what new products have been introduced. That way, once I decide I need a new “whatever”, I can learn about what’s out there, and make an informed decision on which to purchase. Advertisers can still make commercials, but they will only be seen when requested, and will need to be as honest and informative as they can.

Also websites. How else do you think your BP, Facebook, Instagram, local news site, etc etc etc is free to use? Unless you want to pay for every little service out of pocket, removing advertisements is just not feasible. Remember when texts were something like 10cents per message? Imagine that but you're paying for everything you post. More than once if it's beyond the character limit. TBH I'm glad that advertising dollars cover that.

That's an awkward one. Websites need advertising revenue to pay for their operations. Though they would use MUCH less bandwidth if their sites weren't so bulky with scripts and HTML5 formatting. I would be perfectly satisfied to read plain text news stories.

I think a better thing would be if a product or company is above a certain value or age, they aren't allowed to advertise. Eliminates ads for things everyone is well aware of, and gives an opportunity to smaller and lesser known ones.

Companies would only spend this money to prevent certain stores fro, carrying competitors good or make them sell only their product.it would create more monopolies and stifle the free market.

The worst are ads letting you know how good the company is or that buying their product makes the world better. If you have to convince others you are good, you aren't. How about those great ads from BP, Exxon, Ford, and Mercedes Benz all promising to be off fossil fuels in 30 years. $100 million ad campaign from Coke letting me know they donated $200K water to hurricane victims . If they really cared, they'd use the $100 million to build the needed emergency water purification plants they mastered before the hurricane hit. Hurricane Katrina wasn't the first one to hit that place.

How sad that people like this think so little of others. This attitude shows that they think other people are stupid, and they are contemptuous of them because of that. What point is being made by stating that they "didn't know something existed until 10 seconds ago". So? What does that have to do with anything? Nothing. Advertising doesn't "make" people want anything. Heard the old saying, "Build a better mousetrap and the world with beat a path to your door"? It's wrong. That won't happen because humans aren't telepathic. People have to know about the better mousetrap before they will come to the door. Advertising is nothing more than informing people about the better mousetrap.

It might be sad but it is true. Other people are very stupid and it works in advertising to operate on that principle. I had to make a website for my business. It looked so fuçking awesome and elegant and smart. But I hired a developer to tie up loose ends and he changed the entire thing for me, dumbed it WAYYYYYY down, and the response is so much better now. Advertising plays on our most simple instincts. Stupid people buy the most too. Stupid people are what drive markets; and advertising.

How would you know it existed to make your life easier if it wasn't advertised? Shopping channels however, should definitely be banned, and *some* other product advertising could be banned. This would also put all the "ideas people" who get paid obscene amounts to think of stupid adverts that make NO SENSE, fragrance guys I'm looking at you

Leodavinci

How? Are you saying they should get free advertising? That would make things even worse unless it came with a unappealable, legally enforceable stipulation that politicians must tell the truth during election campaigns, and that being untruthful will get you removed from the election or removal from office if elected... for life. Politicians selling their influence (for whatever motivation) corrupts the democratic process... and that's been going on way before advertising existed. Rules we need for politicians (before dealing with "corrupting" advertising); Total financial transparency by candidates (and every appointed/hired government position) going back 2 decades. No elected (appointed or hired government person) can be employed by nor receive ANY form of compensation from any business entity, group, or individual affected by legislation they are involved with (this would also apply to hired and appointed government positions)... for life.

All the nay-sayers must think we only get info from advertising. How about talking to people, reading, listening to experts? We use SO MUCH MORE stuff we do NOT need than the amount of stuff we would miss if we didn't know about it. Most of it plastic.

I have the same theory with the fashion industry and all clothing. Hear me out. Get over the fact everyone will be naked 100% of the time, who cares. Think of all the money and water everyone would save. No more washer and dryer. No more dry cleaning. No more chemicals going into our water. I'm just saying it's worth thinking about.

This is very progressive. I like it. Bodyshaming would be over, because everybody looks kinda wonky and there’d be no fashion magazines to tell us that we look wrong. We’d all just look weird and be ok with it.
