Why do they have access to your accounts if you're both adults?

I think this is acceptable in the US, or at least permissable. Very strange from my UK standpoint. A child can have a savings account in the UK thar anyone can put money into, but I have never had authority to withdraw money. The young people get access at 16 and then full banking rights at 18. At least, that's what happened with their building society accounts.
