“I am an old fart who is rather on the wrong side of 40 so I’m not overly well-versed in the art of efficient internetting,” wrote an anonymous dad 9 months ago in what became probably one of the most beautiful posts submitted on the subreddit “Relationship advice.”

After his only son came home with a friend to spend quarantine together, dad was seeking advice: “How do I let them know it’s okay?” The heartwarming post has since gone viral and you can read it in full in Bored Panda’s article right here.

Fast forward to Christmas holidays and Doritos Mexico released the 2-minute commercial “El mejor regalo,” which translates to “the best gift.” The beautiful clip is based on the same heartwarming story written by the same dad wondering how to show his support to his gay son.

It has amassed almost 14.5 million views on Doritos’ YouTube channel and touched way too many hearts to count, making everyone tear up on the way. Tune in for the beautiful story below, which shows that the best gift, after all, is accepting everyone just the way they are.

The heartwarming clip almost makes you forget you’re watching a chips commercial. It’s only at the end of it that the Doritos Rainbow logo is seen on the screen.

The Doritos Rainbow project first aired back in 2015, when the leading chips brand unveiled the internet-famous Doritos in rainbow colors. This new limited-edition flavor was only available if you made a donation to the It Gets Better Project, a campaign that supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth.

The company now aims to continue its diversity campaign over 2021 as part of the #PrideAllYear campaign that collects stories shared by consumers.

Here’s the original Reddit post that Doritos’ commercial is based on

The marketing director at Doritos Mexico, Eduardo Córdoba, commented: “We’re really proud of the accomplishments that have been achieved with Doritos Rainbow. We believe the moment is right to show that our commitment extends beyond a proud celebration every June.”

In Mexico, where macho culture is still very much prominent, “The Best Gift” commercial offers a breath of fresh air for LGBT+ youth, setting a beautiful example of unconditional love and family support.

This coming out story has hit too many hearts to count on social media

"Meme Mee" was hateful but being hateful back isn't the right thing to do even though it feels good. Their hatefulness comes from their heart and it's sad that they feel like they need to search out a fight and be cruel to people. They clearly have some problems with self esteem and possibly didn't get a lot of attention growing up. They might never change but being rude and angry towards them won't help. They need kindness because they obviously haven't experienced a lot of it. Nobody is born like that, they definitely went through some things to push them in that direction. They have to deal with their hateful heart every day, we can survive a homophobic comment. Just hope and pray they move on and heal from whatever made them act the way they did.
