Sorry, cats – dogs are still more popular than you, at least among Americans. As of 2024, 65.1 million households own a dog and 46.5 million prefer cats. So, apologies to all the contrarians, but we have to go with the trends of the real world here and get in some doggo content.
Today, we're featuring the dog memes from the project I'd Rather Be With My Dog. It's an Instagram page with over 500k followers. But that's not all: it's also a brand that's all about rescuing pups and giving them a loving forever home. So sit back and enjoy some memes for dog lovers from other true dog lovers!
To know more about dogs and what their silly behavior captured in memes can be, Bored Panda reached out to Clinical Animal Behaviorist Karen Wild. She’s a registered dog trainer and author of five books on dog and cat behavior, including Being A Dog. Read on to find her thoughts on whether there is any behavioral basis on why dogs act as silly as they do in these memes or is it just us imagining things.

I donāt know much about dogs, so am very open to being educated - this is beautiful, but is this wise with a new, assumedly unknown dog fresh from the shelter? Happy to be corrected
It isn't, you are right about that, as the background of the dog is unknown. With a well trained socialized dog something like that would be unproblematic, but since it's a new dog, you can't know if this is the case, or if the dog might have some hidden triggers
Load More Replies...The I'd Rather Be With Your Dog Instagram is not just a meme page for dog lovers. It's also a lifestyle brand created by CEO Doug Ratner. He credits its creation to his pooch, Oggy. "I was sitting at the computer with my guitar in my lap," Ratner writes on the I'd Rather Be With My Dog website.
"I was fixated on a particular riff that I couldn't put any words to and needless to say I was frustrated. But lo and behold, sitting right next to me was my faithful Oggy, just staring at me with his big loving eyes, and instantly I came up with 'I'd rather be with my dogs, than be with you.'"

This is why I could never work for organisations like the RSPCA. I would be fired on the first day for beating the sh*t out of an animal abuser. I know I am not emotionally strong enough to stay calm and detached when dealing with someone who could do that to any animal.
Absolutely. I'd be arrested before the week was out.

Today, I'd Rather Be With My Dog sells merchandise for pet owners, as well as for their four-legged best friends. They've got apparel for all pet lovers to express their devotion and love.
What's more, they're all about helping dogs in need. "We donate to different causes weekly, everything from rescues, to canine cancer awareness, or military dogs overseas who need our help," they claim on their website. I think the memes just got way more wholesome!
Someone gave that dog that toy. It has great meaning to her. Breaks my heart she is lost or abandoned.

She can come home with me. They can all come home with me. My husband will initially say we canāt keep themā-until they win him over and he vows to never let them go. Heās actually a big softie and pushover who doesnāt want to admit it, so initially acts like NO! when I know damned well itās actually YES!

Dogs in memes often act crazy and humanlike – and that's one reason people love them so much. We decided to ask an animal behaviorist, Karen Wild, whether our interpretations of dogs being "just like us" are true or just figments of our imagination. She says it's most likely both. "It can be a mixture of accurate behavior observation and inaccurate interpretation," the animal behaviorist says.
Nice! So sweet! š We have the bestest best friends in them! ā¤ļø
At our wedding, we also took pictures with our dog. She looks so annoyed on every pic, and when we both kiss her, her face just says "eww!" I love these pics so much :-)

The absolutely BEST bodyguard your little bundle of joy can have!
Agreed - looks like a Great Dane. My family had one when I was born and I am told that she protected/guarded me pretty much 24/7 and slept touching my crib. When I got a little older and could walk, I am told I would toddle over to her and she would lay down, whereupon I would clamber onto her back and she would stand up slowly, allowing me to ride her like a pony. XD I fell into the pool one day when I was 2 and she leaped in and pulled me out before my parents could even react (they were nearby, but Chashu *teleported* into the pool to grab me.) I only have unclear memories of her as she died when I was 3, but she was an amazing friend and the best bodyguard ever. The ONLY downside to Danes is their short lifespans when compared to smaller breeds :(
Load More Replies...When my son was little (just learning to walk) and his half sisters were 3 & 7, we let them walk around unsupervised. When there's a German Shepherd, a Newfie, a Pitbull and 3 watch Geese - you really don't have to worry. PS: the animals were trained to not let them go further than the mailbox, which was about 1/8 of a country mile.
Sleep well, young child. No monster that can fit under your crib stands a chance against your guard dog!
Oh my goodness big boy, you are a wonderful bodyguard and friend for your tiny human.ā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤
"In other words, memes usually represent a snapshot moment we might recognize, such as an emotion in a dog's face, but they say the reason for that emotion could be something only humans would do or think," Karen Wild explains. "It is very common for people to get it wrong, which is sometimes why dogs end up biting defensively."
This is going to sound ridiculous, but...I have the same problem, I barely know the names of mine, their doggies, on the other hand
We dog owners have come to accept that for the most part - yeah, this is how we know the other dog/pet owners. My neighbour's are "Happy's humans" or "The Doberman lady". "Melissa who?" "You know, Melissa of the watch-Pom" "right right right..."

Load More Replies...No. I hate to be that person, but PLEASE do not buy silver labs or support their breeders. This coat colour is the result of a genetic defect, which is enforced through specific breeding. This almost always includes inbreeding and can lead to severe health problems, including a lot of skin defects (bald spots, infections, sores etc), lowered life expectancy, a weakened immune system and kidney failure.
Load More Replies...Why is this the first time I have ever seen a dog kissing booth and I'm 50! I feel cheated!

Load More Replies...My daughter & her boyfriend had 2 Pit Bulls. And my 2 granddaughters. Those dogs were the absolute sweetest creatures. As soon as I met them we became fast friends. The older dog was the female & her son was the male. I would sit on the couch and they would fight for who got my lap. (We did try to share). People who say Pit Bulls are bad, just never met a good one.
As much as we'd like to read the behaviors of our dog positively, our interpretations when they're being particularly meme-able can actually be the opposite. "Body signals in dogs can be due to negative emotions as well as positive ones, and often a mixture of these," Wild goes on. "If a dog is racing around, often called 'zoomies,' for example, this can sometimes be a sign of overwhelm rather than happy excitement."

Only reason my daughter wants to buy a house is so her dog can have a yard to play in.
Indeed. My boys love their garden. Lawn now looks like an archaeological site. The shrubs are coping well. Sadly they also ate most of the raspberries and strawberries but the mulberries are out of reach.
I feel this! XD One time I found my GSD mix puppy (who is 2 now) lying still on his side in the backyard, red stains all over the concrete underneath him, red stains all over his chest and mouth. He had recently been diagnosed with distemper, so I freaked out and screamed. He startled, lifted his head, and I realized he had simply raided my thornless blackberry tangle and had eaten so many berries that he had gone into a food coma XD To this day he is a fruit/berry fiend - we tried fencing off the (very thorny!) boysenberry vines but nope, he is able to hop right over and raid those too and doesn't seem to give a fig about the thorns XD

This was reason #1 I bought my house. I told my best friend of 12 years I'd get him a yard, I miss him so stinking much, but I'm glad I was able to deliver on that promise
Actually we are looking for a new apartment with a garden for our dog to enjoy the sun and the green grass.
Yep, I bought my house as it was next to a large open space for my dog.
and we don't have to worry about anyone telling us if we can have a pet or not - beware of HOAs on that one though.
We couldn't have a dog for a long time 'cause our apt was small. When we moved into a bigger, nice flat, we got our first Cocker Spaniel , Bingo. Bingo was the joy of our family for 13 years.
We have a horse farm. All the pastures are fenced with fencing that works for horses and dogs (mainly so animals, other than our own, can't get into the pastures and at the horses). We have one non-horse pasture that is exclusively for my husband and I and our two Jack Russells and their adventures, however, we constantly get requests from friends who call it the "summer camp for dogs" - to let their pups come over and spend the day, or sometimes several days! Luckily, we have never had a guest dog that didn't get along with our two boys but I'm thinking we should start charging for 'days at camp" ;)
Sure. If they are leaving their dogs in your care, then you become the responsible party so you should charge. A friend watches my dogs when I'm away and I PAY HER TO DO SO.
Load More Replies...When my son goes to work, our dog will put all of his "babies" (stuffed animals) at the door for my son to find when he gets home.
And that's why it should be illegal to only get one puppy or kitten. They need a sibling to play with.
Did you ever watch Dharma and Greg? Their dog had a pet dog (as in the second dog belonged to the first dog)
Load More Replies...One of Karen's missions is to educate owners to differentiate between playful behaviors and signs of potential behavioral issues. In fact, a dog acting quirky isn't always as cute as we might think. "People need to learn the differences to prevent our lovely dogs [from] becoming stressed, unhappy, and defensive."
This reminds me of this hilarious post I saw. "my mum just bought our cat a christmas stocking even tho we are muslims and dont even celebrate christmas?? she was like āwe dont know what religion he is we cant force him to be muslimā hes a cat?"
That made me laugh out loud, and I needed to laugh. Thank you.

What a cutie! You would get a pass for beingblate. But, you have to share the photos!
Unless the dog is already disabled and can't walk on their own..
Load More Replies...Karen recommends looking at multiple body parts on a dog to spot signs of distress. And consider context as well. "For example, a 'wagging' tail can be from a highly agitated and upset dog if the tail is held tense, high, and thrashing about. So, you'd look at the situation and the dog's head, body, eye, mouth, and ear movements, too. Dogs are excellent communicators -- we just have to learn their language!"
I have always been wary of people that don't connect with animals, that instinct has almost always been right.
Never trust a person that hates dogs and never trust a person that dogs hate.
Load More Replies...My house helper is afraid of cats. When his mom was very small, a cat attacked her. I expect the child didn't get the cat's "NO!" signals, and the cat finally made sure she did. The woman is absolutely terrified of cats, and passed it down to her sons. I was worried at first, because a large part of the job is to take care of Bouche and Audi. It took a few explanations, as he's never taken care of animals before, but he does fine. He was very jumpy the first few times he came, but has gradually relaxed. Bouche has started rubbing against his legs now and then, and he lets her.
One of my neighbors is similarly afraid of cats, because this house's previous tenants had a cat who apparently "lunged out of nowhere" and "attacked her" when she came to visit the previous tenants one day. I know all cats have their own personalities, but it seems strange that said kitty would have lunged to attack her apropos of nothing unless it was VERY aggressively territorial. Neighbor has seen Kohl and Preacher chilling in the window perches a lot, though, and has watched me walk Kohl on her harness. Now she feels comfortable petting Kohl. I hope your house helper progresses to realizing how wonderful a well-raised kitty friend (like your two) can be!

Load More Replies...I get this. I remember feeling a deeeep dislike for a team member (sports team, back in 'the day') due to her reaction to the presences of 'dog'. We were at a competition - open air.. many people brought their pets/dogs, including myself. All was good... until I saw her curl her lip in disgust and kick aside the dog blanket that had been laid down (folded, to make a small mat) on one side of the team tent while muttering "Why don't people GET that not everyone likes DOGS..." and she made this wretching noise. No... It wasn't quiet either.... and no... she was not even close to being alone in the tent (I was RIGHT THERE... not eavesdropping and hiding). I hope all her food orders are made wrong for the rest of her miserable life.
I always smile at the pups, not the people.š¤£š¤£š¤£ā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤ā¤
But do dogs have a sense of humor, too? They seem to delight in stealing our socks, shoes, and other belongings, but do they do it on purpose and with the intent to make us laugh? The animal behaviorist says it's possible dogs might steal your socks for different reasons each time they do it.
Some years ago, mine had a veterinarian that would give little massages as he was examining. One day I had to speak up.. Can you be my doctor š

How? I understand my cat's main meows. "Food." "Pet me now" "open the window" "Brush me" "I have to poop" Yes, he announces that.
When I had to move back home, my parents were terrified that my 110# rescue would hurt their mini daschund. Imaging their surprise when he taught Beau how to perfectly bark along with the "Happy Birthday" song including howling at the end!!
It is actually true. Dogs are the only known species who understand language of another species. They really do understand the words we say, and can remember quite a lot of them
I suspect you do without realising, like "Bark!" (let's play) or "Bark!" (welcome home) or "Bark!" (someone's at the door), all quite distinct.
"However, they do enjoy their own idea of fun, so maybe they just like socks, or maybe they like the idea of us joining in a game," she admits. "Humans generally don't react when a dog takes their own toy, but when it's something [of theirs], suddenly, it looks to the dog as if 'everyone wants to play.'"

If there's one thing Karen would like owners to know, it's that not one dog deserves physical punishment. She says we, as owners, must learn the language of the dog. "I'd like people to stop saying dogs are 'dominant' or 'spiteful' and then punishing them, shouting, and smacking them when it's us humans that have got their language wrong. Dogs are really intelligent creatures. If we really care about dogs, we learn how to communicate gently and safely."
I found out when I was 7 that I was adopted (I found out because I was a snoop; family was going to wait until I was older.) I brought the photo I'd found of a lady holding a baby (labeled "Rose and Crystal, 1982") to my mom and said (paraphrasing a bit, I'm sure I was less coherent) "Well, I'm Crystal, and I was born in 1982, but who is Rose?" My mom started crying and so did my older sister (parents' bio child.) I was quite baffled as my mom tried to explain what "being adopted" meant. I suddenly brightened, smiled, and said, "So, just like Split?" Split was our dog. My mom blinked a few times and said "Yes. Just like Split." So, I 100% thought of our pets as family members, since they were adopted, just like I was XD

The best part is that my cats are dark-furred (one black cat, one tuxedo cat) and my dogs are light-furred (cream/tan-colored GSD/Kuchi Dog mix and tan/brown Belgian Malinois) so no matter WHAT color shirt/pants I wear, there WILL be fur visible on it XD
Load More Replies...Every single dog and cat breed sheds. There is no such thing as a dog or cat that doesn't shed. What do you think happens to their individual hairs? They just poof away into the ether? Additionally, Maltipoos are mixed-breed/mutt dogs, so they have no breed standard. Poodles shed very little, but one might get an individual Maltipoo who expresses more Maltese genes than Poodle genes. (There's no such thing as a "hypoallergenic" dog or cat either, as an aside.)

We have to get allergen friendly haired dogs. Allergic to cats. Still have had a bunch. Worth it. Some cat breeds are better for asthma.
My boyfriend is allergic to cats and dogs. We have two of each. Over time he has built up a tolerance to our individual pets' dander/fur, but we do still have to vacuum, brush the animals, and use air filters a lot XD For some reason, he has a worse allergic reaction to our shorthaired cat than to our longhaired cat - I think it is probably because the longhair's fur "traps" a majority of the dander he sheds XD

I can understand, I suppose, but each time I've lost a pet, personally it made me happy to see pics of my friends' pets while I was grieving. It always gave me a pang, and sometimes started me crying, but I loved seeing happy, healthy puppers and kitties. But we all grieve differently, and you are a wonderful relative who clearly has your niece's wellbeing at heart :)
Load More Replies...How many horses ... 2, because it needs a friend; 3, because if you go riding with one the other will feel lonely; 4, because if you want to go riding with a friend ....
Horses aren't exactly affordable pets, though... XD
Load More Replies...it's not "chou" like cabbage, it's "chou" like "chou Ć la crĆØme" cream puff. and there is also ma puce or pupuce (my flea :/) mon canard (my duck ?), mon lapin (my bunny) mon poussin (my chick)
Load More Replies...I called my dog Fenring by the nickname "Dingus" so often that I eventually just made it part of his AKC registered name. He is named after a character from my favorite book (Dune) so he was supposed to have a nice, elegant registered name like "Count Hasimir Fenring" or "Governor of Arrakis". Nope. Didn't happen. He is now registered as "Fenringus von Dingus, The Failed Kwisatz Haderach". Sigh XD
But I want you at a healthy weight!! So we can be happy together for longer!
erm lots of dogs do mine do my old staffie usedto say i love you you hello an a few others my two nowjust answer me back ššwhen i say quite down or no i get a no back lol
I read a study recently that says dogs understand our emotions and the "feel" of what we're saying FAR more than we ever gave them credit for. So the study encouraged us to talk to our dogs as if they understand us, because... they pretty much do XD Both my dogs will "answer" back, especially my VERY talkative/groany GSD mix. Both my cats will "answer" back as well if you ask them a question XD
Load More Replies...Nah. Coz sometimes we come home with FOOD. So maybe they think we're out hunting. Just successful on only one day per week.
No my dog knew my uniform, plus I took her to work sometimes, so she knew street clothes meant fun, a trip, or I'm home for the day. Uniform meant I was working and be home after awhile. Smart girl...lab border Collie mix.
That is exactly my way of thinking. Although I've read that they smell everything where we've been and you don't have to show them what's in your shopping bag, they already know right away.
Hubby and I upgraded to a king size bed, the dogs love all the extra room š¤£
I have a California King bed and a chihuahua who thinks he is a large dog. My dog will take up the entire bed and then have the nerve to bark at me when I try to move him so I can roll over lol
This is how my darling spouse sleeps with the dog. He squeezes AAAALL the way over 'til he's almost falling off the edge. Me? I nudge her until she scooches over to the sort-of-middle-ish. The only consequence is that I end up cuddling closer to the dog - which is what I think she actually wants. Silly spouse.
Dogs like apple slices -my lab gets a slice of two when I cut a honeycrisp up for my ewe, Clarice.
Load More Replies...When I got my dog, I had a metal sign made that I put on the outside of his exercise pen that basically said "DO NOT FEED ME: chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, gum, xylitol" - basically all the common "human" foods that are toxic to dogs. My mother cannot be trusted - she used to feed my cat c**p like teriyaki chicken, rice, pretzels, and candy. Sigh. I don't leave any of my pets unattended around her because she will just blithely feed them whatever she's cooking even though I've told her many times the stuff that is toxic to dogs and cats.
Before I got married, my gauge for whether to be in a relationship with someone was how my pets responded to them, and how they treated my fuzzy babies. If either was a negative, boy, buh-BYE! My husband passed both tests with flying colors, so my animals and I took a vote, and it was a unanimous YES for him to stay. I have to say, they really called it too, because weāll be having our 24th anniversary in May.
Thatās quite a unique way of finding someone, and Iām very glad it worked out! Have fun!

Yes. The reason is although they don't understand any sentences or routines or mood changes, they are simply there. They listen, they try to make us laughing, they lay with us and rest their heads or butts against us. Are you in the mood for talking? They will listen, head tilting. Wanna go out, enjoying nature? You have a team partner. Just a little bit of chilling on the sofa or on the lawn? They will be at your side. Party? Everytime! And never ever any questions asked.
No, this is the dog trying to send the message that theyāre NOT coming in! Listen to your animals, they tune into our vibes, and know the good people from the bad. Let them be your litmus test for other people.
My Belgian Malinois and my GSD mix are both the biggest sweethearts to 99% of the people AND dogs they meet. When the GSD meets someone, he usually whines, groans, and falls over on his side and exposes his belly in the most "PET ME I LOVE YOU" way possible. The very few people that he has growled/barked at, I steer clear of - same with my Mal (who is still a puppy.) If they growl or bark at a person, I nope out of the situation. They're the same with other dogs - they love nearly every dog they meet, but have RARELY started barking at other dogs. One time my GSD went on a barking frenzy when someone brought their dog into the dog park. I collected him, leashed him, and started walking away, and one of the other regulars mentioned that the dog who had just come in was known to be aggressive and had bitten many other people and dogs at the dog park before, and was supposed to be banned, but their owner still brought them anyway :/
Load More Replies...Doesnāt matter if itās a 110 lb dog or a 10 lb cat. They ALL expand during the night, and no matter what size bed you have, you always end up sleeping on the last 6 inches from the edge, while the four-legged fuzzy gets to spread out over the rest of the bed top real estate.
This with my cats, aka anxiety fluffballs. At least one of them uses pets and scritches to cope, which I usually oblige.
Nope, that the right color. I've taken in a Husky, we're in the middle of a heat wave. Husky fur is EVERYWHERE!!!
What type of evil monsters say "not really" or "no" in the poll question when asked if dog memes improve your mood???? 🤨
I didnt read the "interview with the expert" (not that I ever do), but it would have been funny if it was a dog and in between the memes there was just "bark bark bark WOOF!"
I can't have dogs because someone I live with is allergic so instead I look at dog memes.
Would you be able to walk someone's dog for them? Or would that mean you came home too 'doggy'?
