7 Dogs Before And After Japanese Grooming (New Pics)
I’m an animal photographer, and these images are from my photo series titled HAIRY. I originally posted 8 dogs here on Bored Panda in 2016. I’ve since expanded the series, spending three months photographing 30+ more dogs before and after their grooming sessions. Here are seven new dogs.
All the dogs have been groomed in a Japanese style. Japanese dog grooming does not follow the rules of traditional, breed-standard grooming. In fact, the dog groomers have one mission ― to bring out the dogs’ individual personalities and make them look as adorable as possible! With extreme attention to detail and careful consideration of a pup’s best attributes, Japanese pet groomers and salons achieve the perfect transformations by forgetting the uniform looks and getting creative.
The dogs in the series were groomed by the incredibly talented groomers from Healthy Spot in Los Angeles, CA. Many of the groomers there specialize in this Japanese fashion style of cut and have been trained by Japanese masters.
The series is now available in a book called Puppy Styled, available on Amazon and in bookstores everywhere. I hope you enjoy!

Share on FacebookI actually think the dogs look so much better with their natural hair instead of the groomed..
That's cool but they need to be brushed out daily or groomed every 6-8 weeks or they'll get horrific mats that can cause bruising or immobility. For some people the grooming is more practical...
Load More Replies...On the one hand, the groomers work is impressive and the dogs do not look unhappy. On the other hands, they look artificial. Animals are no toys.
I'm not a fan of this kind of grooming actually. I mean, ok if they have excessive hair or very messy and tangled hair to give them a good groom but I am not in love with these geometric ones
Nice job grooming them, but honestly they look much cuter and better with their natural hair.
I hope you love this wild dog- https://www.techgape.com/2015/01/dhole-the-indian-wild-dog.html
Load More Replies...What is sad is that this is the modern version of a dog..something to style and parade around for attention. Dogs are so much more than this c**p
It is just grooming why is everyone getting so mad they are not being treated differently it is simply a hair cut and some washing and grooming
Load More Replies...I like the photo and haircut on the last one, Calvin, the best. He looks really happy and clean. I like the style of haircut on the other pups too...its unique, original and fancy. Most of them look great, and dogs will not mind them :)
Why does on bored panda with posts like these the comment section have to be so negative. No dogs are sad, hurt in pain annoyed or unhealthy quite the opposite. Yes maybe they look a little like toys, and perhaps you prefer one or the other but just because they look different doesn't mean they are in any way shape or form hurt. I've been to many of these competitions, and the dogs lead great lives with great diets, walks and the occasional groom. We go on about looks not being important but then what would you do if you saw one of these dogs in public.
Yeah everyone's being so annoyed about it like the dogs probably don't really care one way or another, as long as their owners are treating them well who cares what they want their dog to look like
Load More Replies...Almost every before picture looks better! Except maybe Calvin as he got cleaned in the process ;)
They look gorgeous both before and after. The second one (forgotten its name already) looks like a teddy bear after.
Buddy looks like a little bear.....D´awwwww! ☆*:. o(≧▽≦)o .:*☆
omg some of the after pictures look like stuffed animals. this post is adorable
OK I'm a 40 year regular cis dude but these dogs look fabulous and fierce. Go head, girl
I prefer my animals to look like animals and not a fancy toy. They can be groomed without looking like that afterwards.
I can't stop laughing at the facial expressions on each photo!! =)
These dogs have better haircuts than me. ....these dogs have haircuts that probably cost more than mine.
I really like Calvin's rocker look / hairdo lol... Aeorosmith haha.... The legs, not so much... But to each his own I say,!
Dogs don't care, as long as they are happy thats fine! If they make their owners extra happy by having the cute haircut, thats fine too, why everyone has to be so unhappy about that :/
The first dog looks like he has a massive sugar cube stuck to her head. The third one looks like she wants to speak to the manager. And the last one looks no different from her before picture.
They're all adorable, both before and after. They do look more "toy-like" after grooming.
We need a photo if you want our thoughts on that one! Though if you want square hair...???

I don't like japanese grooming, think they look horrible! Grooming yes, japanese no.
Some look good, some look better without grooming. I like all of them
The most adorably groomed dogs I've ever seen, good work. Do you do cats?
Thank God pups can´t recognize themselves in the mirror, just imagine they could & saw how hilarious they looked after having been groomed hahahaha!!! 😂😂😂🐶🐶🐶💖💖💖
Is it just me, or does Nala look a little too sexy, and doesn't Bella look like Rachel in Friends?
Dogs do not care what they look like. I believe that. After grooming, though, my dogs seem to prance more and are more animated. I do notice that people give them smiles and compliments and the dogs notice that. That may be why they seem up after grooming. In any case, grooming is necessary for some breeds and better for most. Especially since they sleep in my bed.
The dogs who had hair in their eyes, look so much happier with that trimmed back.
I don't like it when people make their dogs look like toys. Now I do understand some dogs need to be groomed and that's fine obviously but there's a world of difference between keeping your dog's hair neat and out of its way and making your dog look like a teddy bear. What bugs me about this is that 'oh what a cute toy' is also the attitude people commonly(I won't say it's always, but I will say it's often) have to small fluffy dogs like this(think the last one is larger? All others seem to be of small breeds) and this is awful. Like AWFUL awful, it's harmful and cruel for the dog because even if their breed is a decorative one that has been bred for certain looks(and fluff) it does not make them a toy. They are a living being with their own mind, character and needs, and these needs include healthy food and long walks over cutely trimmed head and a fancy bag to sit in as their owner carries them around to show off.
I have Portuguese Water Dogs, which require grooming like this. If I go too long without grooming, their hair coils, creates knots which turn into mats which cannot be groomed out. Have to cut them out. My dogs love it after they've been groomed. Their coat is so much lighter and comfortable they just prance around showing off their new cut.
Honestly, I prefer the more natural "before" look. And yes, I know grooming can be better for their health. But I'm pretty sure just giving them a good brush every few weeks would work just fine. BE FREE MY GOOD PUPPERS
fur babies are beautiful in any way and shape, groomed, not groomed, with one eye, with three legs..they are a blessing. I particularly prefer natural look because is less stressing for the doggie but I love them all, no matter what. In fact, I have a tendency to love the ones that are less "perfect", the old ones, the disabled, the sad...I would like to take them all in my arms, kiss them and let them know everything will be ok. My dream: a farm with rescued dogs that nobody wants.
That's really racist... "Asian love for doll-type-everything?" plenty of non-Asians like doll-type-stuff and plenty of Asians don't like doll-type-stuff.
