I Take My Wolfdog On Epic Adventures Because I Hate To See Dogs Locked Away

I’m often surprised by how much joy animals can bring into our lives. Even more, the joy that comes from healthy relationships with them is really amazing. It seems hard to describe so I typically don’t try.

Loki’s Instagram is really the product of that hard-to-describe emotion. Additionally, I believe dogs aren’t meant to live out their lives in a backyard or inside a house. I hate to see that. I hope we are inspiring people to get out, explore our world, and make memories with their pups.

I wish you would change the title of this. That's not a wolfdog and nobody should ever be encouraged to own a wolfdog. It's bad for the actual wolf population and they are typically extremely hard to raise because part of them is wild. That is a beautiful dog though

The sad part of this article would be all the negative comments. He's nt encouraging people to get wolf dogs, he's encouraging people to take their dogs out. Don't keep them locked up.. It just so happens that he has a wolf dog.. There's always going to be people who have bs to say. Loki seems happy, keep up the great work!

This is an Alaskan Malamute. Also, real wolf hybrids are NOT domestic dogs and will not act like such. They shouldn't be owned as a pet and I seriously hope more people understand this.

Absolutely wonderful, but also important to remember the needs of breeds - not all dogs would love these sorts of activities! I've got two whippets who enjoy a mad half hour in a field chasing bunnies, but after that they want to go home and sleep on the sofa.

Agreed. My dog hates extreme temperatures. He dislikes snow. He dislikes heat. After a half hour at the dog park he's asking to go home. He'd rather go to his friend Lucy's house where they can be crazy together in the basement. He loves couches and pillows and blankets and will steal them. If I took him out to do stuff like this he would cry and refuse. (There have literally been times where I've wanted to take him out to play in the snow and he laid down and cried until I took him in.) He's a (standard) schnauzer mutt.

Loki is not a wolfdog, and I think it's important for people to understand that. Calling a dog like him a "wolfdog" gives people the wrong impression about how REAL wolfdogs look and act. Folks look at an article such as this and think "Oh, well if that's what a wolfdog is, then I want one, too!" and so they do one of two things: They either get another misrepresented husky/malamute mix and continue the cycle of misinformation - or, they end up with a real wolfdog, and, expecting that animal to act just like a domestic dog, find themselves sorely unprepared to provide said animal with the proper care, containment, and +R training that it actually requires. Wolfdogs, even low-content ones, are a far cry from any domestic dog. They are not given the same legal protections, are much harder to socialize, and often exhibit escape artist tendencies and separation anxiety. For more information on this topic, please look up "wolfdog misrepresentation" and "wolfdog phenotyping".

I mostly agree, but if you really know any hybrids and phenotyping, then you have to admit that you can't tell a wolf hybrid by pics alone

Not a wolf-dog. Just a malamute. Still gorgeous. Misrepresenting an animal as having wolf in it is dangerous to actual wolves/wolf-dogs and the humans who think they make good pets. I work with them. They do not.

Who cares if it's a chihuahua or a wolf... Really the title of the video has absolutely nothing on how amazing this video is. Devo you really captured the bond that you share with this sweet pup. Anyone who sees this video knows that you and your pup have a bond that is magic.

That's a malamute, just went to the wolf sanctuary in Colorado and calling dogs wolf dogs encourages people to actually go out and get them then they call the sanctuary desperate to get rid of this crazy wild animal who is tearing up their s**t. The sanctuary is FULL!!!!!! Stop encouraging "wolf dogs" as pets. That's just a dog, a malamute, they are usually very large. He's adorable, go to your local shelter and adopt a big fun dog of your own.

You cannot "definitely" tell whether a dog is a wolf hybrid by looks alone. I had a malamute/Siberian/Timberwolf and he was AMAZING.

Does this guy have a job? And what does he mean he doesn't think dogs should live out their lives in backyards and houses? Where else should they live? Dogs are pack animals, they WANT to be with their family (US) a walk around the block every evening, a romp in the backyard every afternoon and a car ride to the Tim Hortons drive through where the nice cashier gives him a timbit in the morning is a Lovely life for a dog! My dog would tell you so herself if she could talk. Wait...a 5 pound Pomerian that wears a pretty dress everyday is still considered a Dog right?????

He's saying you should bring your dog places and go exploring. Hiking, outdoors, events, etc. To give your pet stimulation. I have two Pomeranian and they go many places - Florida, Pittsburgh, Camping, Hiking, Pet Events etc. Many people when they have a yard don't even bother to walk their dog, so encouraging some more stimulation within your dog's comfort level is a positive thing that he is promoting.

Listen! All you people who think you've owned or known "low percentage" wolfdogs are GUARANTEED misinformed. GENES DON'T WORK THAT WAY. Real professionals determine wolf content through phenotyping! Phenotyping means looking at the physical traits the animal has and determining from there the contents of their genes. I have heard from a variety of professionals, and I can see for myself, that Loki here has NO WOLF TRAITS WHATSOEVER. He's got husky face markings, heterochromia (NEVER seen in wolves or wolfdogs with any significant content), compact kitty paws, pointy ears, a deep chest, and round doggy eyes and lips. There's no mistaking that he's a beautiful animal, but facts are facts. Saying that wolfdogs are inappropriate pets is not "demonizing" or "hating" them, it's just plain common sense. MISREPRESENTATION KILLS!!!

Beautiful pics and beautiful animal, but where's the "wolfdog" to which you refer? There is certainly no wolfdog in any of these photos. Calling dogs wolfdogs leads people to purchase wolfdogs believing they will behave like Loki does. They don't. Calling your dog a wolfdog is also risking your dog's life, as there are no approved rabies vaccinations for wolfdogs. Wanna get your beautiful, loving, husky, Malamute or otherwise "wolfy-looking" dog taken away form you and very possibly killed? Tell people it's a wolfdog. I am NOT being "negative," I'm trying to save animal lives.

Ninety percent of these comments gave me, and every remaining wolf dog, cancer. The Internet is a sad place filled with people missing the point entirely, desperately trying to correct perceived wrongs that have nothing to do with anything and grammar Nazis. I am going to remove myself from this cesspool of vapid commentary and go play with my dog, who may or may not, also be a wolf. Good day.

Kelli, I love you to bits because of how much you love your Loki! The love bond with a dog is the strongest bond imaginable - hard to understand until you have a dog in your heart, and you are in his/her heart. Our two athletic dogs are older now (12 & 11) so we have changed our Colorado "lifestyle" to accommodate shorter adventures. We'll be by their side to the end though, no mater how far (or not) they can still walk.

1st of all, you can clearly see that that is not a wolf dog. 2nd of all, misrepresentation is bad... People get wolfdogs that they can not handle because a misrepresented dog made them interested... 3rd of all the comments are not all hateful just because they are saying that the dog is not a wolf dog.

I owned a wolf hybrid his name was Wubbie they take a lot of work and its a lifelong commitment not recommended for everyone. Loki is unusual name I once supported a Wolf Refuge called Loki Clan Wolf Refuge in Conway NH but they disbanded and its called something else now. I had a huskey/wolf mix and she was a phenominal dog. I wish I could have another, but I live in Florida. It is just too hot here. Mielle was over 100 lbs. ad she never barked. She would howl at sirens and could awaken the dead with it, but she was a perfect pet in everyway. Loki looks so much like Mielle, I am amazed. Have many happy trails!

Beautiful photography and adorable wolfdog! Loved the video, too ;) (And for all those arguing about wolfdogs, they are as diverse as any other dogs within their breed. I had a German Shepherd/Wolf/Husky mix and she was shy as a pup, brave & adventurous as a teen and friendly & outgoing as an adult into her senior years. Throughout all her years she was loving & gentle towards people she liked and ignored those she mistrusted. She also was very gentle & curious when it came to other species, such as cats & even chickens! Wouldn't have trusted her around rabbits or squirrels, tho! Nor would I with many breeds, such as terriers or beagles! Until you actually own & live with a wolfdog, please keep your opinions to yourself & just enjoy the pics. Thanks!)

I think he's beautiful and very trusting. I think I would be afraid that out in the open some crazy person/hunter would mistake him for a wolf and shoot him. I would never, ever want to see that happen. I'm not sure where you live, but it's beautiful and pristine and I just don't trust hunters. Protect your gorgeous friend at all costs.

yeah i wish more dog owners would take their pet on an excursion to the fcking grand tetons, i mean everybody has the resources to do that at the drop of a hat right? its not like there are different levels of socioeconomic stability or systemic issues that could possibly force pet owners to keep their dogs inside or, god forbid, in a backyard, they're just mean hearted curmudgeons who totally deserve for a privileged chode with no concept of a realistic worldview to pass judgement on them

I don't get why people are getting angry about this. Yes, he is going into the mountains (I live about an hour from Denver and you don't have to go to the Grand Tetons for that scenery, it's only 30 minutes to an hour away, which is why many people live in the area) with his dog, but you don't have to do that, going for long walks close to you are great too. The thing is, unfortunately, lots of people don't--I see people all the time on their smartphones, dragging their dog down the street when he/she wants to stop to sniff something, just trying to get their 20 minute quota in and go on to other things. Lots of people DON'T take their dogs out to do fun things on their days off b/c they are busy, let alone on work days. Lots of people leave their dogs home alone all day with nothing to do, or don't take them for walks because they have a yard they can just let them out in instead. If you do keep your dog active, then that's great, but he's trying to inspire people who don't.

A beautiful dog that has such a great human to love honor and protect him. And take him to wonderful places. ... Always took our dogs (have had 12 almost all rescues over the years) everywhere. They especially loved the beach where they could run free and chase the wind and the gulls ! Also my great belief is to be able to train them so they can be off leash. Worked for all except for one crazy JRT that someone didn't want.

As others have stated, that's not your typical domestic dog. Household pups, while wonderful, do not belong in the backcountry. It only puts them and their owner in danger.

Amazing to me that even the most beautiful photography, accompanying am amazing and inspiring story, at the heart of which describes the best in man/ man's best friend symbiosis, could possibly be met with negativity, pomposity and criticism. Let it go, people. Your energies are far-better served, and negativity spewed, with stories of real issue...the story of a certain majestic beast being killed by a certain cowardly, masculine-challenged dentist, comes to mind. Leave this story as it is intended. A wish to get people more involved in enjoying the outdoors with their companion-animals.

May I say, you all look to be truly enjoying your wilderness hiking and taking along the most beautiful dog I have ever seen, Loki is simply marvelous, very handsome. He is the one who appears to be having the time of his life and I totally agree a dog isn't something that ought to be shut away or kept on a chain outside. Dogs enjoy the outdoors and all the cool stuff you give your beloved Loki, but, in reality most folks don't have the means to take their dogs for adventures like this. Lovely of you to share your beautiful pictures, I really did enjoy every moment!!!

The photos are magnificent. The family relationships are to be envied, and who cares if this is a 100% wolf or any other combination: it's obvious there is a deep and loving bond here, which I know first hand CAN be developed with a "real" wolf. Extremely lucky canine, and it would be wonderful if all the dogs in the world could have the loving kind of life they prefer regardless of indoor or outdoor living.

They where not created to stand in a grassland doing nothing but eating or sitting at home waiting for their boss to kom home. Especially your kind off dog (wolf-dog) is made for running in the snow and a lot of activity. It is so lovely to see that soms people get that and actually do this with their dog! I wish you would change the title of this. That's not a wolfdog and nobody should ever be encouraged to own a wolfdog. It's bad for the actual wolf population and they are typically extremely hard to raise because part of them is wild. That is a beautiful dog though

Not a wolf-dog. Just a malamute. Still gorgeous. Misrepresenting an animal as having wolf in it is dangerous to actual wolves/wolf-dogs and the humans who think they make good pets. I work with them. They do not.

This is such an encouragement to teach our wolfdog (still in the puppy years) to not run when off leash...so we can go places with him, too...Thanks for sharing these photos...AND my absolute favorite? The 1st photo in the line-up showing Loki in a hammock...he looks so pleased with himself and with life, and that's as it should be.

Um, guys. If any of you took the time to just click to his instagram or Facebook, you would see he writes that Loki does have wolf ancestry. And having worked at a shelter in CO where we have had them come in, you CAN'T tell for sure just looking at them either. End of argument please.

I had a Siberian Husky...wolf gray, whom looked an awful lot Nike Loki, not nearly as large, mind you, but I always affectionately referred to her as my, 'wolfie'....Could it be that it's the case with Loki? Cripes, people. Beautiful creature....amazing bond!

Incredible. Such beuatiful pictures and that video. The joy of Loki makes me smile. Bu the way. Is he that big or does it just looks .ike he is so big. Or is it because he is a wolf dog. Does that mean hybrid?

Wonderful pictures! Even more so in Loki's instagram! Just forget about these so-called internet "experts" that claim whatever breed he may be just by looking at pictures. Sad really, some people just have to keep hateful comments to themselves. Amazing photos and scenery! Loki looks like he is having loads of fun with his pack!

Thank you for sharing your story perhaps you should write a book?

This is so awesome and made me so happy! This is what u life for, and so do animals. They where not created to stand in a grassland doing nothing but eating or sitting at home waiting for their boss to kom home. Especially your kind off dog (wolf-dog) is made for running in the snow and a lot of activity. It is so lovely to see that soms people get that and actually do this with their dog! U really made my day! Your dog must be lucky to be yours ❤️

Beautiful, beautiful baby!!! Makes me miss my wolf dog, Tipperary. He lived to be 22 years old and was the most loyal friend I've ever had.

I'm surprised you're dog is so cool with hammocks. I put my Golden Retriever in a hammock once with me and she did not like it at all. Now she just lays underneath the hammock as I scratch her.

These photos are so lovely; they give me some hope which I too much need these days.. But you definitely shouldn't come to Turkey! Some parts of my public like to shoot kids (including ages 2,3..) these days, they might want to test their ability on Loki as well. Well, honestly, you might even face to choose betwen being shooted or being raped. Just wanted to share about what kinds of things are happening here around..

He's beautiful, he reminds me of my "wolf" dog. She was 1/4 wolf, shepard, Husky and lab. But big and really furry like that. I'd say you have about 1/4 wold and the rest husky in this one.

I hate when people say they have a wolfdog. People love to brag about things and saying you own a wolfdog is "trendy" and conveys the wrong idea.
