Alabama has made a home in the headlines after Governor Kay Ivey signed the Alabama Human Life Protection Act – the countries most restrictive abortion law to date. In response women everywhere have used whatever platform they have to share their opinions and experiences, the most popular one being social media. Several hashtags have popped up to encourage and destigmatize the dialogue surrounding abortions such as #ShoutYourAbortion and #YouKnowMe, and while many agree that sharing these stories are important, others – like this OB/GYN – also think that a woman shouldn’t have to share or have a traumatic story for her right to choose to be respected.

This OB/GYN responded to the new abortion law in Alabama in a powerful post that has since gone viral

An obstetrician-gynecologist with almost 17-years of experience shared a post on the website Scary Mommy as a response to Alabama’s law, that only allows abortions to prevent a serious health risk. OB/GYNs found breaking this law could face up to 99-years in prison or even a life sentence. She began by inviting people to come into her exam room “just for a moment, to listen to the stories I have heard from women. Listen carefully to what is said to me behind closed doors.”

She mentioned the multiple reasons women had given for their procedures that ranged from economic to medical to mistakes to rape. There has been much controversy surrounding Alabama’s law even among religious conservatives over the fact that it does not allow exceptions for rape or incest.

In 2004 the Guttmacher Institute conducted a survey completed by 1,209 abortion patients at 11 large providers and in-depth interviews with 38 women at four sites. They found the most frequently cited reasons were: that having a child would interfere with a woman’s education, work or ability to care for dependents (74%); that she could not afford a baby now (73%); and that she did not want to be a single mother or was having relationship problems (48%). Nearly four in 10 women said they had completed their childbearing, and almost one-third were not ready to have a child.

At the end of the post, the OB/GYN finished by saying that the reasons why a woman was seeking an abortion didn’t matter, “You don’t need a reason other than, this is your choice.” She added that if people were sent to prison for treating their patients then “we have gone too far.”

Women in the comments thanked the doctor for her support

My one and only pregnancy was described as a "train wreck". I was a newly diagnosed and uncontrolled diabetic. I had just found out that I had a bicornuate uterus, and I was pregnant with twins. This pregnancy could have killed me. I am forever grateful that I had a choice, no matter how difficult it was.

What is meant by abortion being used as birth control? Are there people that think that women go around having lots of unprotected sex and just go f**k it I'll just abort whatever's going on in there in a month or two or are people saying that abortion should only be under extreme circumstance rape etc; Genuine question?.

Abortions have been happening for 1,000s of years. Women used to use abortifacient herbs to have abortions. Making abortions illegal will not get rid of abortions, it will only make them less safe as more women pursue back alley abortions. Pro lifers try to shift the importance of the baby's life as more important than the woman carrying the baby, but history has shown that will never be true. The pregnant woman will not allow others to dehumanize her and always be the one to choose in the end, and just by this act, she makes it fact that the woman's life is more important than that of an unborn baby.

Prior to legalization, 90 percent of illegal abortions were done by physicians. Most of the remainder were done by nurses, midwives or others with at least some medical training. The term “back alley” referred not to where abortions were performed, but to how women were instructed to enter the doctor’s office after hours, through the back alley, to avoid arousing neighbors’ suspicions. Most women having abortions are pressured or coerced to do so by someone else — and that most abortions are likely unwanted. Before 1973, women could refuse an unwanted abortion on the grounds that it was illegal, unsafe and immoral. Legalization has made it easier for those around her to insist that because abortion is legal, it must be “safe,” and because it is “socially approved,” it must be moral. It makes it easier for them to refuse to support her desire to continue the pregnancy and insist that she abort anyway.

Women should own their own bodies. Just as important is the fact that government should not. Government is not equipped to make personal medical decisions for people. It is not qualified to do so. It does not have the right motivation. And let's remember that giving government the power to control a woman's reproduction by forbidding abortions implies the power to enforce abortions.

When we consider that women are treated as property, it is degrading to women that we should treat our children as property to be disposed of as we see fit. , The popular pro abortion chant "Without our basic rights, women can't be free: abortion on demand and without apology!" This line betrays the faulty underlying philosophy that is perpetuated in our modern society: that women must have the legal right to kill their children through abortion in order to be "free" and equal. This idea has been central in the legal argumentation for Roe v. Wade, PP v. Casey, and even Whole Women's Health v. Hellerstedt. However, implying that a woman cannot be successful if she carries her baby to term is fundamentally misogynistic. It doesn't address the true needs of women, but acts as an insufficient band-aid on societal ills surrounding reproduction, pregnancy, and parenthood.

I love how every "pro-life" men suppose that a raped woman should accept the children as a gift. Well and what if she's your wife ? Like, you know, not all raped woman are single drunk teenage girl who love party! A raped woman can be also your christian wife ... would you accept your wife's and her rapist's child as a gift of God ?! Would you love him? Really ?

My husband and I were thrilled when I got pregnant after 3 years of trying. Then we found out the baby had Down's Syndrome which was so severe that he was not expected to live. After a weekend of holding each other and crying, we both realized that we had independently come to the conclusion that it would be cruel to force him to live, even if he managed to, with all the associated birth defects he would have in such a severe case.

There are so many reasons to keep abortion legal but we should aslo be more responsible, like considering one night stands, affairs and sexual education for kids. In eastern Europe, especially in my country, sexual education is missing badly. Even parents are against for kids teaching it at school. But they don't realise how many little girls ( 12-14 years) are giving birth to unwanted babies and abandon them, kiling them or filing the orphanages with then which are a terrible place to live in. In my country abortion is still legal but it is blamed by the church and also sexual education is blamed. At the moment I am pregnant and I love already this baby so much. I realy don't know what should I do if I will ever be in a situation described in this article. It is terrible to even think about it. 😔

As a monogamous woman in a hetero relationship, most women I know who have shared private stories of abortion had them because the father did not want the pregnancy and they didn't feel able to raise a child alone, thought it would jeopardize their relationship with their husband or partner, and didn't want to bring another fatherless child into the world. Even when women want children and are impregnated by men they love they still find themselves faced with this decision. What do you do when birth control fails and the man you love says I'm not ready for a child and asks you to abort it? It is an untenable situation with only regrettable outcomes even within a marriage.

You have the baby and place it for adoption. Your poor choice in sex partners is not a reason to end a human life. I'd question a woman who would kill their child to stay with a man who had so little regard for what she wanted or felt.

The ONLY opinion that matters is the woman's, although in a perfect world the guy can have input, but as much as it might affect the guy, he does not have to live with the consequences of the decision.. When us guys can become pregnant then, and only then, should we have any final say... (and even then only about our own pregnancy)

Even if abortion was more than just getting rid of a fertilized egg, and you were actually killing a living being, it would still be moral to do so. No person has the right to live off of the organs of another living person. That’s why the government can’t force you to give a kidney to anyone. This law would set precedent to allow the government to force transplants. Of course that won’t happen but it’s the same concept. Also if you support a woman’s right to choose then stop saying abortion isn’t birth control. Anything stopping a baby from being born is birth control. If it’s okay to do it because a woman was raped then it’s okay to do it because a woman was just forgetful about taking the pill. There’s no difference because either way it’s just the removal of an egg. Half of you saying these dumb things have had miscarriages you weren’t even aware of.

Abortion intentionally terminates the life of a human being residing within his or her mother. This is a fact that can be concealed only with word games. It is not an article of faith imposed on believers by religious groups. It is not a fiction invented by misogynists who want to control women’s bodies. It is a medical reality, available to anyone willing to use their rational faculties to comprehend the mechanics of human reproduction and abortion.

The only thing more maddening to me than having to revisit the whole Roe V Wade decision is the seemingly intelligent pro-choice people who keep making the same mistake over and over in these arguments. They ramble on about women's rights and reasons for abortions that, in their minds, are all valid reasons for abortion being legal - like doing so is suddenly going to change the mind of the pro-life group. It won't. For the pro-life group, this isn't about women's rights. Most of them are religious and believe that women are to be subservient to men. So forget about all of your women's rights arguments. They aren't going to get you anywhere here. There is only ONE valid argument that the pro-life people care about, and the pro-choice side isn't talking about it - the lives of fetuses. The one thing that no pro-choice discussion that I have heard yet is saying is that limiting abortions to 6 weeks (like in the Georgia "heartbeat bill") will actually INCREASE the number of abortions.

When a woman has an unplanned pregnancy, she will likely not know it until at least 4 to 5 weeks in. This gives her ONE WEEK to figure out how to financially afford to care for this child, to figure out how to rearrange her school, work, other children, care for elderly parents and possibly find a new job - not even mentioning the discussions she needs to have with the father and the abortion appointment she needs to make IMMEDIATELY just in case she cannot work ALL of that s**t out in seven days. And when she can't figure all of that out in just seven days, she will feel rushed into an abortion that she may not have wanted to have. THIS is why the "heartbeat bill" (and others like it) will INCREASE the number of abortions, and THIS is the truth that the pro-life side needs to hear. They are killing the very babies that they claim to want to save.

I did nor hear a single argument in this to justify murdering the baby. I echo that these are horrible situations and that I have led a life that has not brought this heartache into my life. My wife had issues with her pregnancies that led us to close ourselves off from future children. I regret that every time I see a baby or think about it. Rape, illness, poverty, etc. Are all sad, but the baby does not deserve to die because of it.

What about the women who were raped? The women whose fetuses will not have access to what they need once they become actual babies? The women who just don't want children? The women who are too young to raise a child? Women who know that they won't be able to give up a child once they're born, but can't properly provide for them? Women whose children have serious disabilities that will make their lives miserable? It's none of your goddamned business whether or not a woman gets an abortion, unless that woman is you. Women shouldn't have to "save their virginity for their husbands" like many religions and unqualified men say. It's our bodies, our choice.

Her right to a decision is certainly respected because she is allowed to make the choice. But a right to do something is NOT a right to go uncriticized. No one in the world has that right. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's ok or right or good, or not evil. It just means you're allowed to do it. That is all the right that women have. No one, NO ONE, is obligated to respect you for your decisions. No one is obligated to overlook killing a baby or potential baby. Being connected to your body doesn't figure into it being right or wrong, good or bad. Do what you feel you need to do and suck it up. Waving banners about doing something wrong and even hideous doesn't make it less wrong or hideous.

The fact that you felt the need to point out something so obvious says a lot about how dumb you are. Everyone knew that already, because it applies to everything in existence. Here’s the thing you forgot: Just because someone criticizes something doesn’t make their criticisms accurate or valid. Just because some people think healthcare is “evil” doesn’t make their thoughts logical or grounded in reality. The dumbest people alive are usually the biggest critics of the simplest things. Their respect isn’t desirable. And their opinions hold no value. Thinking healthcare is wrong and hideous is wrong and hideous. People are free to be wrong and hideous, but it doesn’t mean anyone cares.

Really? The people against abortion get their comments hidden and the people that are for abortion can say whatever they like? If you don't think abortion is violent, you clearly don't know what is involed. If you believe a child is a 'clump of cells' you clearly don't know anything about science.

Some of those stories were nothing to do with health, they were convenience. I can never agree with abortion, you're killing an innocent child that has human rights of their own. I have empathy for children that are abused and become pregnant but other than that I see no excuse for it. The other exception would be if the baby is a danger to the mother's health or the baby wouldn't survive outside the womb.

That fetus is a parasite that cannot live on its own, like any other parasite. I think medicine has advanced far enough that it might be transplanted into you, taking *your* nourishment, deforming *your* body, and putting *your* like at risk. You will get no help supporting it or protecting you, of course, because it will be *your* parasite. If it's disabled, well, carry it anyway.

Bring on all the "you don't get a vote because you are a man" and "they don't want to subject the child to a bad life" (bad life is better than no life, no?) and the "what about the incest and rape cases!"(in all of the .01% of abortions, statistically nonexistant). They fail. All of them. I had a IUD, it worked like a charm, for years. Until it didn't. I had done everything necessary to not have a child. So I went and did NOT HAVE A CHILD ! The reason why I did not want a child at that time is nobody's business and should not matter the slightest as it does not affect anyone but me ! And don't come at me with "murdering a child" ! I did not murder my child : I sent it back to where it came from, I begged it pardon and explained to it why I was making this choice and that I was hoping it would come back to me later when I would be ready to welcome it into this life WORTH LIVING. This is the big difference between so-called pro-lifers and pro-choicers : pro-lifers think any life is worth living, even a life of suffering and pain; pro-choicers want more and better for their children, and if they cannot offer it, they prefer their children to not be born at all rather than having a life that will purely SUCK !!

Why is it when a teenage boy rapes a girl, people say "well we don't want to ruin his entire life by giving him a criminal record." But when that girl is raped the same people demand that she have the entire rest of her life affected by being forced to have and care for the baby she didn't want?

Sorry, I think the excuse of my body my choice is wrong and that's why I don't agree with abortion. It may be living and growing in your body, but it's still someone else's human life that you're taking when you intentionally abort the baby. You don't like others telling you what you can and can't do with your body, but youre also fine with making the choice to end another persons life. So in essence, you're doing the very thing you're using to argue your point. If you don't want the baby, then give it up for adoption. It's not ideal but it's better then killing the child. And yes, that child is alive very early on, even when they are the size of a bean, they are moving and are alive. I've seen it with my own eyes.

I do wish someone could explain why this is a political issue, everything shared between a doctor and a patient is strictly confidential and it protected by laws enacted by these same politicians?

Unless it's a matter of life and death there is no excuse for killing unborn babies. MAYBE THESE WOMEN SHOULD HAVE KEPT THEIR DAMNED LEGS CLOSED! Had they done this they wouldn't have gotten pregnant. It's not rocket science.

If you believe a child is a 'clump of cells' you clearly don't know anything about science.

if you don't want to get pregnant then stop having unprotected sex! Use a condom, IUD the pill...There are several ways to prevent getting pregnant. If it happens carry the child to term and give it up for adoption. Be responsible don't kill it, its a human being, does that not matter any more?

What are you, stupid? No manner is 100% effective. S**t happens. IT'S NOT A HUMAN BEING TILL IT'S BORN!! Before that it's a parasite that lives off a woman's body. It may be wanted and loved, or it may be anything from an inconvenience that will ruin her life to a hated monster from a rape. Who are you to decide for her. God?

I love how any anti-abortion comment is hidden. Also love how open, free and loving the bored panda readership is...until it comes to the killing (dont pretend it is anything but that) of a baby. Bring on all the "you don't get a vote because you are a man" and "they don't want to subject the child to a bad life" (bad life is better than no life, no?) and the "what about the incest and rape cases!"(in all of the .01% of abortions, statistically nonexistant). Please, rage on me and downvote, it only exposes you for what you are.

A human life. Growing inside you. Arising out of whatever circumstances. With whatever challenges you and he or she may face. Yes, it is a he or she. The next potential J.R.R Tolkien or Mahatma Gandhi or Marie Curie. And you kill it. Abortion is horror, selfishness, and cowardice. Nuff said.
