Periodontist Scoffs At Tattooed Woman Asking For Sedation, Gets Shut Up

A doctor’s office should be a place of trust but for some, it can fill up with false assumptions and biases instead.

A few days ago, Reddit user Peach_Emoji_ turned to the platform to let out her frustrations after a visit to a periodontist, who acted in a very dismissive manner because of the patient’s tattoos.

This story highlights that people still run into prejudices in the healthcare sector, leading to discomfort and anxiety about their treatment.

According to a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, 32% of American adults have a tattoo themselves, including 22% who have more than one.

Overall, eight-in-ten Americans, including those with and without ink on their skin, believe society has become more accepting of tattoos over the past two decades or so, and 66% of those who don’t have one themselves say seeing a tattoo on someone else leaves them with neither a positive nor negative impression of that person.

However, 29% say it influences their perception badly.

And they aren’t the only ones who feel judged during their doctor appointments. One study found that 17 percent of patients have felt vulnerable to similar prejudice as the author of the post due to their “racial or ethnic identity, gender, socioeconomic status, weight or age.” What’s worse, these people were worse off health-wise than their peers, too — patients who feel judged by healthcare providers are less likely to access readily available preventive care such as flu shots and put off treating problems until they reach higher levels of acuity than others.

How ignorant of that doctor, dental pain and pain from getting a tattoo is not the same at all. There is a reason that they used dental extraction as a torture method in some countries.

Dental anxiety is real, you horrible Dentists who ignore it. You are basically forced to allow them to torture you (pushing needles through your gums - esp bad when near the roof of your mouth); poking aggressively each check-up to see if they can find a weakness - which when they find one throbs for ages after; hygiene visits are the same. They act like we don't have pain receptors in our mouths. I'm in my 60s and STILL dread going to the Dentists.

Downvoted not because of your experience, which sucks, but because Bored Panda titled this experience as “traumatizing.” Traumatizing would be actually having the dental work done without anesthesia. This was “insulting,” both for you, and for anyone BP misrepresented it to.

My father told me he went to a dentist as a young man (so around 1950) and had some work done. I don't remember what it was, but he said it hurt pretty bad. After the dentist was finished he told my father that he must be pretty tough. Dad asked why he said that, and the dentist replied that most people would have asked for pain killer when getting that done. Dad didn't know that was an option. He was a soft spoken, even tempered, gentle man, but he told me that was as close as he ever came to starting a fist fight.

I know that some tattoo parlors have numbing gel they place on the area that dulls the pain, its the same as some hospitals use for IV's is rubbed in and within 5 mins you don't feel the needle as much, or at all, iv been poked by needles all my life {very sick, cancer, brain tumor, blood clot in the lung, so sick} and i have has millions of IV's and blood took, and since about 2016 they have been using that numbing gel if you have problems with needles or if it will be in a rough place {just ask, its more "richer" type hospitals tho}, and my friend ran a tattoo parlor and said they get those in at times to help those that get small ones

But my tattoo didn't hurt at all. Even the tattoo artist was asking me if it was really my first tattoo (of my cat, he's 18 now) and just deducted I've got a high pain tolerance. Funny i think it's due to years of dentists not believing me when i tell them local anesthetic doesn't work on me. And still they won't write it down anywhere like "the patient claims..." Nothing. Even after general anaesthetic dental work i just had, "due to fear..." I don't think it's fear, i think it's the fact that after 20 years and dentists i got fed up being in pain and dismissed as a child "she's just sensitive" and they still won't even put a note down... I was out of it at the time otherwise I'd had demanded for them to make a note... I don't understand why nobody believes me, do people think i decided to get fully sedated and miss two days of live just for the fun of it? (Two days because the appointment was in the afternoon and the next day i was still woozy)

I cannot believe anyone would seriously suggest to perform gum grafting without anesthesia. I had that, it includes cutting a piece of tissue from you palate and sewing it to you (cut) gums. It's really precise operation and no one would risk that the patient would move suddenly because of pain. My periodontologist asked me every 5 minutes, whether I feel no pain and was prepared to give me additional injections in such case.

Even if op wouldn't have a problem with the pain it's a completely different thing to go get a tattoo or piercing and being prepared for it to hurt and be a bit scary because you know what you're getting yourself into. It's a completely different thing when a medical professional pretty much says that it should be fine if they cause you pain because you've done painful things before. What an idiot. He shouldn't work with patients if he can't take their fears and concerns seriously

getting tats is nothing like a dental/medical procedure. in the past several years the entire medical profession as seem to have taken a course in how to make patients feel like they are potential d**g abusers when it comes to pain management. i have a degenerative disease that was diagnosed over 25 yrs ago. i have had ankles fused, both knees replaced as well as one hip. the other hip is going south as well as one shoulder. i had to get a new provider and even with all the documentation i was sent to a pain psychologist to 'confirm' that i needed pain management meds. during the session the shrink was kind of skeptical until he asked about what i have done. once i mentioned all the replacement parts he was kind of surprised and annoyed that i was sent to him as surgeons don't to that unless the joints are gone. we can thank not only the politicians for their interference in medical issues but people who have lost loved ones to addiction for all the restrictions.
