I’ve Built This DIY Chicken Coop Out Of Up-Cycled Items During Quarantine (16 Pics)
At the beginning of the Quarantine, I caught the homesteader bug and decided to raise chickens.
After researching the cost of coops, I immediately grew discouraged. Store-bought coops were prohibitively expensive, not terribly functional, and often esthetically boring. So, armed with some basic tool knowledge & a ton of bravado, I set out to build a chicken coop straight out of a fairytale!
Wish me luck!
It was inspired by Romani caravans, and I mainly used free & scavenged items
I had always admired the beauty and function of Romani caravans and decided to make one in miniature. Because my budget was tight, I challenged myself to use only free & scavenged items to keep the cost low.
Premade coops were too expensive for my tastes, so I tried an inventive solution
Only a few but essential details were bought
The only things I purchased were the utility wagon (used), an electric coop door (a necessity if you don’t want to be “up with the chickens”), the carved medallions for the wheel hubs, the round stained glass window (previously found at a flea market for $5!) and some miscellaneous hardware. The rest was MacGyvered using a couple of free, oak headboards, an antique doll crib, an old farm gate, and some cast-off cedar shingles and scrap wood.
My goal was to build a chicken coop that looked like it came from a fairytale
The chickens were also free
Even my chickens, Hester and Prynne, were free! I love how it turned out, and more importantly, the girls do too! Next on my to-do list is a large chicken run.
The building process
Next on my list: a chicken run
Both of us are happy with results!

Share on FacebookIt's nice but when you put something nice with chickens it won't stay nice for to long because chickens just poop everywhere.......... trust me I know
I think K. Dye knows that, but if you keep such a home clean well enough I think they can live there for several years. With the big enough amount of straw that could absorb the chickens´ poop .

I love this post and everything about it. I think bored panda used to have way more of this stuff (beautiful, fun, inspiring artistic or hand crafted personal projects). Somewhere down the road it became a cross section of things happening on social media and things got more angry and judgy and a little less wholesome in the comments section. I realize that I am part of the problem since I too check out almost all the outrage inducing posts. :-/
Agree entirely. I would like more like this and the woodworking stuff and so on. Less of the stuff collated from social media.
Load More Replies...The chickens already loved their new home when K. Dye was still working on it, I love that it´s so colourful, chickens see colurs very well as far as I´m informed (or why else are some c***s so colourful), a very talented woman for sure, I follow her on Bored Panda now. Eventually she´ll adopt some previous egg-laying hens to her chicken family if she hasn´t done yet??? I could imagine that.
It's never going to stop being hilarious to me that people actually stayed home and never even so much as drove across the street let alone across town to visit friends. It was like we're 14 and just got grounded for the summer only there was absolutely NO ONE and NOTHING to stop us. Self imposed, needless exile is funny and sad.
